Methods of computational quantum chemistry provide accurate approximations of molecular properties crucial for computer-aided drug discovery and other areas of chemical science. However, high computational complexity limits the scalability of their applications. Neural network potentials (NNPs) are a promising alternative to quantum chemistry methods, but they require large and diverse datasets for training. This work presents a new dataset and benchmark called $\nabla^2$DFT that is based on the nablaDFT. It contains twice as much molecular structures, three times more conformations, new data types and tasks, and state-of-the-art models. The dataset includes energies, forces, 17 molecular properties, Hamiltonian and overlap matrices, and a wavefunction object. All calculations were performed at the DFT level ($ω$B97X-D/def2-SVP) for each conformation. Moreover, $\nabla^2$DFT is the first dataset that contains relaxation trajectories for a substantial number of drug-like molecules. We also introduce a novel benchmark for evaluating NNPs in molecular property prediction, Hamiltonian prediction, and conformational optimization tasks. Finally, we propose an extendable framework for training NNPs and implement 10 models within it.

Multiple scattering of waves presents challenges for imaging complex media but offers potential for their characterization. Its onset is actually governed by the scattering mean free path $\ell_s$ that provides crucial information on the medium micro-architecture. Here, we introduce a reflection matrix method designed to estimate this parameter from the time decay of the single scattering rate. Our method is first validated by means of an ultrasound experiment on a tissue-mimicking phantom. An in-vivo measurement of $\ell_s$ is then performed in the human liver. This study thus opens important perspectives for quantitative imaging whether it be for non-destructive testing or biomedical applications.

In geophysics, volcanoes are particularly difficult to image because of the multi-scale heterogeneities of fluids and rocks that compose them and their complex non-linear dynamics. By exploiting seismic noise recorded by a sparse array of geophones, we are able to reveal the magmatic and hydrothermal plumbing system of La Soufrière volcano in Guadeloupe. Spatio-temporal cross-correlation of seismic noise actually provides the impulse responses between virtual geophones located inside the volcano. The resulting reflection matrix can be exploited to numerically perform an auto-focus of seismic waves on any reflector of the underground. An unprecedented view on the volcano's inner structure is obtained at a half-wavelength resolution. This innovative observable provides fundamental information for the conceptual modeling and high-resolution monitoring of volcanoes.

For a normal measurable operator $a$ affiliated with a von Neumann factor $\mathcal{M}$ we show:
If $\mathcal{M}$ is infinite, then there is $λ_0\in \mathbb{C}$ so that for $\varepsilon>0$ there are $u_{\varepsilon}=u_{\varepsilon}^*$, $v_{\varepsilon}\in \mathcal{U}(\mathcal{M})$ with $$v_\varepsilon|[a,u_\varepsilon]|v_\varepsilon^*\geq(1-\varepsilon)(|a-λ_0\textbf{1}|+u_\varepsilon|a-λ_0\textbf{1}|u_\varepsilon).$$ If $\mathcal{M}$ is finite, then there is $λ_0\in\mathbb{C}$ and $u,v\in\mathcal{U}(\mathcal{M})$ so that $$v|[a,u]|v^*\geq \frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}(|a-λ_0\textbf{1}|+u|a-λ_0\textbf{1}|u^*).$$ These bounds are optimal for infinite factors, II$_1$-factors and some I$_n$-factors. Furthermore, for finite factors applying $\|\cdot\|_{1}$-norms to the inequality provides estimates on the norm of the inner derivation $δ_{a}:\mathcal{M}\to L_1(\mathcal{M},τ)$ associated to $a$. While by [3,Theorem 1.1] it is known for finite factors and self-adjoint $a\in L_1(\mathcal{M},τ)$ that $\|δ_{a}\|_{\mathcal{M}\to L_1(\mathcal{M},τ)} = 2\min_{z\in \mathbb{C}}\|a-z\|_{1}$, we present concrete examples of finite factors $\mathcal{M}$ and normal operators $a\in \mathcal{M}$ for which this fails.

Matrix imaging paves the way towards a next revolution in wave physics. Based on the response matrix recorded between a set of sensors, it enables an optimized compensation of aberration phenomena and multiple scattering events that usually drastically hinder the focusing process in heterogeneous media. Although it gave rise to spectacular results in optical microscopy or seismic imaging, the success of matrix imaging has been so far relatively limited with ultrasonic waves because wave control is generally only performed with a linear array of transducers. In this paper, we extend ultrasound matrix imaging to a 3D geometry. Switching from a 1D to a 2D probe enables a much sharper estimation of the transmission matrix that links each transducer and each medium voxel. Here, we first present an experimental proof of concept on a tissue-mimicking phantom through ex-vivo tissues and then, show the potential of 3D matrix imaging for transcranial applications.

Imaging the structure of major fault zones is essential for our understanding of crustal deformations and their implications on seismic hazards. Investigating such complex regions presents several issues, including the variation of seismic velocity due to the diversity of geological units and the cumulative damage caused by earthquakes. Conventional migration techniques are in general strongly sensitive to the available velocity model. Here we apply a passive matrix imaging approach which is robust to the mismatch between this model and the real seismic velocity distribution. This method relies on the cross-correlation of ambient noise recorded by a geophone array. The resulting set of impulse responses form a reflection matrix that contains all the information about the subsurface. In particular, the reflected body waves can be leveraged to: (i) determine the transmission matrix between the Earth's surface and any point in the subsurface; (ii) build a confocal image of the subsurface reflectivity with a transverse resolution only limited by diffraction. As a study case, we consider seismic noise (0.1-0.5 Hz) recorded by the Dense Array for Northern Anatolia (DANA) that consists of 73 stations deployed for 18 months in the region of the 1999 Izmit earthquake. Passive matrix imaging reveals the scattering structure of the crust and upper mantle around the NAFZ over a depth range of 60 km. The results show that most of the scattering is associated with the Northern branch that passes throughout the crust and penetrates into the upper mantle.

In the special case, when $\mathcal{M}$ is the hyperfinite type II$_1-$factor $\mathcal{R}$, we introduce the algebra $AD(\mathcal{R})$, a noncommutative analogue of the algebra of all almost everywhere approximately differentiable functions on $[0,1]$ and show that it is a proper subalgebra of $S(\mathcal{R})$. This algebra is strictly larger than the corresponding ring of continuous geometry introduced by von Neumann. Further, we establish that the classical approximate derivative on (classes of) Lebesgue measurable functions on $[0,1]$ admits an extension to a derivation from $AD(\mathcal{R})$ into $S(\mathcal{R})$, which fails to be spatial. Finally, we show that for a Cartan masa $\mathcal{A}$ in a hyperfinite II$_1-$factor $\mathcal{R}$ there exists a derivation $δ$ from $\mathcal{A}$ into $S(\mathcal{A})$ which does not admit an extension up to a derivation from $\mathcal{R}$ to $S(\mathcal{R}).$

Obviously, ideals $\mathcal{I}$ and $\mathcal{J}$ are quasi-Banach algebras and it is clear that ideal $\mathcal{J}$ is a bimodule for $\mathcal{I}$. We study the set of all derivations from $\mathcal{I}$ into $\mathcal{J}$. We show that any such derivation is automatically continuous and there exists an operator $a\in\mathcal{J:I}$ such that $δ(\cdot)=[a,\cdot]$, moreover $\|a\|_{\mathcal{B}(H)}\leq\|δ\|_\mathcal{I\to J}\leq 2C\|a\|_\mathcal{J:I}$, where $C$ is the modulus of concavity of the quasi-norm $\|\cdot\|_\mathcal{J}$. In the special case, when $\mathcal{I=J=K}(H)$ is a symmetric Banach ideal of compact operators on $H$ our result yields the classical fact that any derivation $δ$ on $\mathcal{K}(H)$ may be written as $δ(\cdot)=[a,\cdot]$, where $a$ is some bounded operator on $H$ and $\|a\|_{\mathcal{B}(H)}\leq\|δ\|_\mathcal{I\to I}\leq 2\|a\|_{\mathcal{B}(H)}$.

It is shown, in particular, that all derivations on $L_{0}^{wo}(ν;\mathcal{L}(X)) $ are inner whenever $X$ is separable and infinite dimensional. This contrasts strongly with the fact that $L_{0}^{wo}(ν;\mathcal{L}(X)) $ admits non-trivial non-inner derivations whenever $X$ is finite dimensional and the measure $ν$ is non-atomic. As an application of our approach, we study derivations in various algebras of measurable operators affiliated with von Neumann algebras.
