The Alderney Race has been identified as a future site for the development of tidal energy, due to its bidirectional strong current reaching 5 m/s during spring tides. This hydrodynamics is very difficult to measure by in situ or remote sensing means. High-frequency coastal radars can provide a synoptic and near-real-time view of such a complex circulation, but the classical processing algorithms are not adapted to the extreme situation of strongly sheared currents. We propose an improved high-resolution direction-finding technique for the azimuthal processing of such radar data. It uses phased-array systems and combines the advantages of the usual beam-forming technique to eliminate many problems related to the distortion of Doppler spectra by extreme currents. The method is evaluated with a unique data set of radar measurements at two radar frequencies (13 and 24.5 MHz) and three spatial resolutions (200, 750, and 1500 m). The radar-based surface currents are analyzed in the light of a high-resolution numerical model and also compared with in situ measurements. While high azimuthal resolution can be achieved in this way, it is shown that the typical range resolutions of 750 and 1500 m are insufficient to account for the strong spatial variations of the surface current at some specific times and locations.

Chenopodium album seedling emergence studies were conducted at nine European and two North American locations comparing local populations with a common population from Denmark. It is hypothesized that C. album seedling recruitment timing and magnitude have adapted to environmental and crop** system practices of a locality. Limitations in the habitat (filter 1) were reflected in local C. album population recruitment season length. Generally, the duration of seedling recruitment of both populations (local; DEN-COM) increased with decreasing latitude, north-to-south. In general, compared to the local population, DEN-COM recruitment at locations north of Denmark was longer and south of Denmark was shorter, and ended sooner. Generally, the local crop** system disturbances (CSD) period increased with decreasing latitude. The total duration of the CSD period was over twice as long in the south as that in the north. Recruitment at each locality possessed seasonal structure (time, number) consisting of 2-4 discrete seasonal cohorts. This may be an adaptive means by which C. album searches for, and exploits, recruitment opportunity just prior to, and after, predictable disturbances. The control of C. album seedling emergence is contained in the heteroblastic traits of its locally adapted seeds, and is stimulated by a complex interaction of light, heat, water, nitrate and oxygen signals inherent in the local environment. Our observations of complex recruitment patterns occurring at critical crop** times is strong evidence that C. album possesses a flexible and sensitive germination regulation system adaptable to opportunity in many different Eurasian and North American agricultural habitats.

Sparse coding, which is the decomposition of a vector using only a few basis elements, is widely used in machine learning and image processing. The basis set, also called dictionary, is learned to adapt to specific data. This approach has proven to be very effective in many image processing tasks. Traditionally, the dictionary is an unstructured "flat" set of atoms. In this paper, we study structured dictionaries which are obtained from an epitome, or a set of epitomes. The epitome is itself a small image, and the atoms are all the patches of a chosen size inside this image. This considerably reduces the number of parameters to learn and provides sparse image decompositions with shiftinvariance properties. We propose a new formulation and an algorithm for learning the structured dictionaries associated with epitomes, and illustrate their use in image denoising tasks.

Abstract:
Bauer, Di Francesco, Itzykson and Zuber proposed recently an algorithm to construct all singular vectors of the Virasoro algebra. It is based on the decoupling of (already known) singular fields in the fusion process. We show how to extend their algorithm to the Neveu-Schwarz superalgebra.
