Entanglement asymmetry in conformal field theory and holography
Abstract: Entanglement asymmetry is a measure of symmetry breaking in quantum subsystems, inspired by quantum information theory, particularly suited to study out-of-equilibrium states. We study the entanglement asymmetry of a class of excited "coherent states" in conformal quantum field theories with a U(1) symmetry, employing Euclidean path-integral methods with topological symmetry defects and the replic… ▽ More

On the Symmetry TFT of Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory
Abstract: Three-dimensional Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory has the peculiar property that its one-form symmetry defects have non-trivial braiding, namely they are charged under the same symmetry they generate, which is then anomalous. This poses a few puzzles in describing the corresponding Symmetry TFT in a four-dimensional bulk. First, the braiding between lines at the boundary seems to be ill-defined whe… ▽ More

$\mathcal{N}=2$ SYK models with dynamical bosons and fermions
Abstract: We study a class of SYK models with $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry, described by $N$ fermions in chiral Fermi multiplets, as well as $αN$ first-order bosons in chiral multiplets. The interactions are characterised by two integers $(p,q)$. We focus on the large $N$ and low energy limit of these models. Anomalies and gauging of U(1) symmetries
Abstract: We propose the Symmetry TFT for theories with a $U(1)$ symmetry in arbitrary dimension. The Symmetry TFT describes the structure of the symmetry, its anomalies, and the possible topological manipulations. It is constructed as a BF theory of gauge fields for groups $U(1)$ and $\mathbb{R}$, and contains a continuum of topological operators. Anomalies of non-invertible self-duality symmetries: fractionalization and gauging
Abstract: We study anomalies of non-invertible duality symmetries in both 2d and 4d, employing the tool of the Symmetry TFT. In the 2d case we rephrase the known obstruction theory for the Tambara-Yamagami fusion category in a way easily generalizable to higher dimensions. In both cases we find two obstructions to gauging duality defects. The first obstruction requires the existence of a duality-invariant L… ▽ More

Factorization and global symmetries in holography
Abstract: We consider toy models of holography arising from 3d Chern-Simons theory. In this context a duality to an ensemble average over 2d CFTs has been recently proposed. We put forward an alternative approach in which, rather than summing over bulk geometries, one gauges a one-form global symmetry of the bulk theory. Elliptic genera of 2d N=2 gauge theories
Abstract: We compute the elliptic genera of general two-dimensional N=(2,2) and N=(0,2) gauge theories. We find that the elliptic genus is given by the sum of Jeffrey-Kirwan residues of a meromorphic form, representing the one-loop determinant of fields, on the moduli space of flat connections on T^2. We give several examples illustrating our formula, with both Abelian and non-Abelian gauge groups, and disc… ▽ More

Elliptic genera of two-dimensional N=2 gauge theories with rank-one gauge groups
Abstract: We compute the elliptic genera of two-dimensional N=(2,2) and N=(0,2) gauged linear sigma models via supersymmetric localization, for rank-one gauge groups. The elliptic genus is expressed as a sum over residues of a meromorphic function whose argument is the holonomy of the gauge field along both the spatial and the temporal directions of the torus. We illustrate our formulas by a few examples in… ▽ More

Two-dimensional SCFTs from wrapped branes and c-extremization
Abstract: We apply c-extremization, whose proof we review in full detail, to study two-dimensional N=(0,2) superconformal field theories arising from the low-energy dynamics of D3-branes wrapped on Riemann surfaces and M5-branes wrapped on four-manifolds. We compute the exact central charges of these theories using anomalies and c-extremization. In all cases we also construct AdS_3 supergravity solutions of… ▽ More

Exact two-dimensional superconformal R-symmetry and c-extremization
Abstract: We uncover a general principle, dubbed c-extremization, which determines the exact R-symmetry of a two-dimensional unitary superconformal field theory with N=(0,2) supersymmetry. To illustrate its utility, we study superconformal theories obtained by twisted compactifications of four-dimensional N=4 super-Yang-Mills on Riemann surfaces, and construct their gravity duals.

Partition functions of N=(2,2) gauge theories on S^2 and vortices
Abstract: We apply localization techniques to compute the partition function of a two-dimensional N=(2,2) R-symmetric theory of vector and chiral multiplets on S^2. The path integral reduces to a sum over topological sectors of a matrix integral over the Cartan subalgebra of the gauge group. For gauge theories which would be completely Higgsed in the presence of a Fayet-Iliopoulos term in flat space, the pa… ▽ More

Holography and condensed matter
Abstract: This is a short review of recent developments in the application of AdS/CFT methods to some condensed matter problems. In particular we present the holographic description of a local quantum critical state, related to (non)-Fermi liquids and the strange metal, that appears in large N CFTs with a gravity dual at finite density and zero temperature, and explore its properties by probing it with ferm… ▽ More

4d Index to 3d Index and 2d TQFT
Abstract: We compute the 4d superconformal index for N=1,2 gauge theories on S^1 x L(p,1), where L(p,1) is a lens space. We find that the 4d N=1,2 index on S^1 x L(p,1) reduces to a 3d N=2,4 index on S^1 x S^2 in the large p limit, and to a 3d partition function on a squashed L(p,1) when the size of temporal S^1 shrinks to zero. As an application of our index, we study 4d N=2 superconformal field theories a… ▽ More

Comments on 3d Seiberg-like dualities
Abstract: We study Seiberg-like dualities in three dimensional N=2 supersymmetric theories, emphasizing Chern-Simons terms for the global symmetry group, which affect contact terms in two-point functions of global currents and are essential to the duality map. We introduce new Seiberg-like dualities for Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theories with unitary gauge groups with arbitrary numbers of matter fields in the… ▽ More

Comments on the N=1 SU(M+p)xSU(p) quiver gauge theory with flavor
Abstract: We study supersymmetric vacua of the N=1 cascading SU(M+p)xSU(p) gauge theory with flavor - the theory on p D3-branes and M wrapped D5-branes at the tip of the conifold, and N_f flavor D7-branes wrap** a holomorphic four-cycle inside the conifold. The Coulomb branch of the moduli space is inherited from the pure gauge theory without flavor and was thoroughly studied in the past. Besides, there i… ▽ More

Quantum moduli space of Chern-Simons quivers, wrapped D6-branes and AdS4/CFT3
Abstract: We study the quantum moduli space of N=2 Chern-Simons quivers with generic ranks and CS levels, proving along the way exact formulas for the charges of bare monopole operators. We then derive N=2 Chern-Simons quiver theories dual to AdS_4 x Y^{p,q}(CP2) M-theory backgrounds, for the whole family of Sasaki-Einstein seven-manifolds and for any value of the torsion G_4 flux. The derivation of the gau… ▽ More

Gauge gravity duality for d-wave superconductors: prospects and challenges
Abstract: We write down an action for a charged, massive spin two field in a fixed Einstein background. Despite some technical problems, we argue that in an effective field theory framework and in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, this action can be used to study the properties of a superfluid phase transition with a d-wave order parameter in a dual strongly interacting field theory. We investigate… ▽ More

Mirrors of 3d Sicilian theories
Abstract: We consider the compactification of the 6d N=(2,0) theories, or equivalently of M-theory 5-branes, on a punctured Riemann surface times a circle. This gives rise to what we call 3d N=4 Sicilian theories, and we find that their mirror theories are star-shaped quiver gauge theories. We also discuss an alternative construction of these 3d theories through 4d N=4 SYM on a graph, which allows us to obt… ▽ More
