Exclusive production of a $χ_{c1}$ axial vector quarkonia in photon-proton scattering at high energies requires a $C$-odd $t$-channel exchange. In the limit of vanishing momentum transfer this occurs either via the exchange of a photon, the Primakoff process, where the spin of the proton does not change. For axial-vector meson production, as a consequence of the Landau-Yang theorem, the Primakoff cross section is finite as $t \to 0$. Alternatively, a $C$-odd spin dependent Odderon can be exchanged, which involves a spin flip of the proton. The resulting cross section is related to the square of the gluon Sivers function or its $\boldsymbol{k}_\perp^2$-moment. Using two models for the gluon Sivers function from the literature we compute the ratio of Sivers to Primakoff cross sections and the angular coefficient $λ_θ$ governing the angular distribution of the $χ_{c1} \to J/ψ+ γ$ decay as functions of $x$. We point out that these observables constrain the magnitude of the gluon Sivers function at small $x$ which could be accessed in electron-proton scattering and ultraperipheral proton-proton and nucleus-proton collisions.

Exclusive $C=+1$ scalar, axial-vector, and tensor quarkonium production in high-energy electron-proton scattering requires a $C$-odd $t$-channel exchange of a photon or a three gluon ladder. We derive the expressions for the corresponding amplitudes. The relative phase of the photon vs. three gluon exchange amplitudes is determined by the sign of the light-front matrix element of the eikonal color current operator $d^{abc}J^{+a}J^{+b}J^{+c}$ at moderate $x$, and is not affected by small-$x$ QCD evolution. Model calculations predict constructive interference, which is particularly strong for momentum transfer $|t|\sim 1$~GeV$^2$ where the cross section for $χ_{cJ}$ production exceeds that for pure photon exchange by up to a factor of 4. We find that exclusive $χ_{cJ}$ electroproduction at the Electron-Ion Collider should occur with well measurable rates and measurements of these processes should allow to find an evidence of the perturbative Odderon exchange. We also compute the total electroproduction cross section as a function of energy and provide first estimates of the number of $χ_{cJ}$ events per month at the Electron-Ion Collider design luminosity.

In this paper, we first present a more efficient derivation of the asymmetries which is applicable to both transverse and longitudinal SSAs, and correct some inconsistencies in our previous calculation. We then adapt the method to compute transverse SSAs in Drell-Yan proportional to $g_T(x)$ and its gluonic counterpart, and discuss the crossing symmetry between the results for SIDIS and Drell-Yan. Finally, we present numerical results for various asymmetries measurable at the EIC, RHIC, COMPASS and Fermilab (SpinQuest), including also part of the genuine twist-three corrections to $g_T(x)$ from a recent global analysis. We find that the asymmetries can reach percent-level magnitude, if the kinematics predominantly probes the large-$x$ (valence) region of the polarized proton, but remain at sub-percent levels otherwise.

We compute exclusive $η_c$ production in high energy electron-nucleon and electron-nucleus collisions that is sensitive to the Odderon. In perturbative QCD the Odderon is a $C$-odd color singlet consisting of at least three $t$-channel gluons exchanged with the target. By using the Color Glass Condensate effective theory our result describes the Odderon exchange at the high collision energies that would be reached at a future electron-ion collider. The Odderon distribution is evolved to small-$x$ using the Balitsky-Kovchegov evolution equation with running coupling corrections. We find that while at low momentum transfers $t$ the cross section off a proton is dominated by the Primakoff process, the Odderon becomes relevant at larger momentum transfers of $|t|\geq1.5$ GeV$^2$. We point that the Odderon could also be extracted at low-$t$ using neutron targets since the Primakoff component is strongly suppressed. In the case of nuclear targets, the Odderon cross section becomes enhanced thanks to the mass number of the nuclear target. The gluon saturation effect induces a shift in the diffractive pattern with respect to the Primakoff process that could be used as a signal for the Odderon.

We compute the transverse single spin asymmetry in forward $p^\uparrow p \to hX$ and $p^\uparrow A \to hX$ collisions from the odderon mechanism originally suggested by Kovchegov and Sievert [1]. Working in the hybrid approach of the Color Glass Condensate effective theory we firstly identify the relevant collinear parton distribution function (PDF) of the transversely polarized proton $p^\uparrow$ as the intrinsic twist-3 $g_T(x)$ distribution. We further argue that the complete polarized cross section also contains contributions from the kinematical and the dynamical twist-3 PDFs, in addition to the intrinsic twist-3 PDF. By restricting to the Wandzura-Wilczek approximation, where the dynamical twist-3 PDFs are dropped, we find that the odderon contribution to the polarized cross section for inclusive hadron production is exactly zero at the next-to-leading order in the strong coupling.

We compute the isolated photon production in association with a charged hadron at mid rapidity in $pp$ and $pA$ based on the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) framework of high energy QCD where, for the first time, we incorporate the Sudakov effect of soft gluon emissions. Our results are based on the leading order $q g \to q γ$ channel in the CGC framework and confronted with the recent data from RHIC and LHC concerning the angular distributions and out-of-plane transverse momentum distributions. We find that, while the CGC computation alone results in too narrow distributions, with the help of the Sudakov effect, we can get a satisfactory description of the data. With this as a benchmark, we provide predictions for the magnitude of the nuclear effect brought by the phenomena of gluon saturation in the CGC.

Motivated by a novel origin of transverse single spin asymmetry (SSA) in semi-inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) uncovered by some of us, we quantitatively investigate its impact on the theoretical understanding of the mechanism responsible for SSA. This new contribution from the quark-initiated channel first appears in two-loop perturbation theory and involves the $g_T(x)$ distribution. We point out another entirely analogous piece from the gluon-initiated channel proportional to the gluon helicity distribution $ΔG(x)$. Both contributions are solely expressed in terms of twist-two polarized parton distribution functions and twist-two fragmentation functions in the Wandzura-Wilczek approximation, such that they can be unambiguously evaluated without introducing free parameters. We make predictions for measurements of the asymmetries $A_{UT}$ at the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), and find that $A_{UT}$ associated with the $\sin (φ_h-φ_S)$, $\sin φ_S$ and $\sin (2φ_h-φ_S)$ harmonics can reach up to 1-2\% even at the top EIC energy.

It is demonstrated that a phase needed for SSA can be produced purely within a parton-level cross section starting at two loops. We identify the complete set of two-loop diagrams for SSA, and discuss their gauge invariance and collinear factorization which features the $g_T$ distribution function. In the $k_T$ factorization framework, many more sources for SSA exist, and contributions from all possible two-parton transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions are presented up to two loops and twist three.

We compute the leading order (LO) $qg\to q γ$ and next-to-leading order (NLO) $gg\to q{\bar q} γ$ contributions to inclusive photon production in proton-proton (p+p) collisions at the LHC. These channels provide the dominant contribution at LO and NLO for photon transverse momenta $k_{γ\perp}$ corresponding to momentum fractions of $x\leq 0.01$ in the colliding protons. Our computations, performed in the dilute-dense framework of the Color Glass Condensate effective field theory (CGC EFT), show that the NLO contribution dominates at small-$x$ because it is sensitive to $k_\perp$-dependent unintegrated gluon distributions in both of the protons. We predict a maximal $10\%$ modification of the cross section at low $k_{γ\perp}$ as a direct consequence of the violation of $k_\perp$-factorization. The coherence effects responsible for this modification are enhanced in nuclei and can be identified from inclusive photon measurements in proton-nucleus collisions. We provide numerical results for the isolated inclusive photon cross section for $k_{γ\perp}\leq 20$ GeV in p+p collisions that can be tested in the future at the LHC.

Photon-jet azimuthal correlations in proton-nucleus collisions are a promising tool for gaining information on the gluon distribution of the nucleus in the regime of non-linear color fields. We compute such correlations from the process $g+A\to q \bar{q} γ$ in the rapidity regime where both the projectile and target light-cone momentum fractions are small. By integrating over the phase space of the quark which emits the photon, subject to the restriction that the photon picks up most of the transverse momentum (to pass an isolation cut), we effectively obtain a $g+A\to q γ$ process. For nearly back-to-back photon-jet configurations we find that it dominates over the leading order process $q+A\to q γ$ by two less powers of $Q_\perp / Q_S$, where $\boldsymbol{Q}_\perp$ and $Q_S$ denote the net photon-jet pair momentum and the saturation scale of the nucleus, respectively. We determine the transverse momentum dependent gluon distributions involved in $g+A\to q γ$ and the scale where they are evaluated. Finally, we provide analytic expressions for $\langle\cos nφ\rangle$ moments, where $φ$ is the angle between $\boldsymbol{Q}_\perp$ and the average photon-jet transverse momentum $\tilde{\boldsymbol{P}}_\perp$, and first qualitative estimates of their transverse momentum dependence.

We compute the cross section for photons emitted from sea quarks in proton-nucleus collisions at collider energies. The computation is performed within the dilute-dense kinematics of the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) effective field theory. Albeit the result obtained is formally at next-to-leading order in the CGC power counting, it provides the dominant contribution for central rapidities. We observe that the inclusive photon cross section is proportional to all-twist Wilson line correlators in the nucleus. These correlators also appear in quark-pair production; unlike the latter, photon production is insensitive to hadronization uncertainties and therefore more sensitive to multi-parton correlations in the gluon saturation regime of QCD. We demonstrate that $k_\perp$ and collinear factorized expressions for inclusive photon production are obtained as leading twist approximations to our result. In particular, the collinearly factorized expression is directly sensitive to the nuclear gluon distribution at small $x$. Other results of interest include the realization of the Low-Burnett-Kroll soft photon theorem in the CGC framework and a comparative study of how the photon amplitude is obtained in Lorenz and light-cone gauges.

We point out that the very existence of a "horizontal branch" in the mass-radius characteristics for neutron stars indicates a strong first-order phase transition and thus supports the existence of a critical endpoint (CEP) of first order phase transitions in the QCD phase diagram. This branch would sample a sequence of hybrid stars with quark matter core, leading to the endpoint of stable compact star configurations with the highest possible baryon densities. Since we know of the existence of compact stars with $2M_\odot$, this hypothetical branch has to lie in the vicinity of this mass value, if it exists. We report here a correlation between the maximal radius of the horizontal branch and the pressure at the onset of hadron-to-quark matter phase transition which is likely to be a universal quantity of utmost relevance to the upcoming experiments with heavy-ion collisions at NICA and FAIR.

We explore systematically a new class of two-phase equations of state (EoS) for hybrid stars that is characterized by three main features : (1) stiffening of the nuclear EoS at supersaturation densities due to quark exchange effects (Pauli blocking) between hadrons, modelled by an excluded volume correction, (2) stiffening of the quark matter EoS at high densities due to multiquark interactions and (3) possibility for a strong first order phase transition with an early onset and large density jump. The third feature results from a Maxwell construction for the possible transition from the nuclear to a quark matter phase and its properties depend on the two parameters used for (1) and (2), respectively. Varying these two parameters one obtains a class of hybrid EoS that yields solutions of the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equations for sequences of hadronic and hybrid stars in the mass-radius diagram which cover the full range of patterns according to the Alford-Han-Prakash classification following which a hybrid star branch can be either absent, connected or disconnected with the hadronic one. The latter case often includes a tiny connected branch. The disconnected hybrid star branch, also called "third family", corresponds to high-mass twin stars characterized by the same gravitational mass but different radii. We perform a Bayesian analysis and demonstrate that the observation of such a pair of high-mass twin stars would have a sufficient discriminating power to favor hybrid EoS with a strong first order phase transition over alternative EoS.

We discuss the photon production in the $pA$ collision in a framework of the color glass condensate (CGC) with expansion in terms of the proton color source $ρ_p$. We work in a regime where the color density $ρ_A$ of the nucleus is large enough to justify the CGC treatment, while soft gluons in the proton could be dominant over quark components but do not yet belong to the CGC regime, so that we can still expand the amplitude in powers of $ρ_p$. The zeroth-order contribution to the photon production is known to appear from the Bremsstrahlung process and the first-order corrections consist of the Bremsstrahlung diagrams with pair produced quarks and the annihilation diagrams of quarks involving a gluon sourced by $ρ_p$. Because the final states are different there is no interference between these two processes. In this work we elucidate calculation procedures in details focusing on the annihilation diagrams only. Using the McLerran-Venugopalan model for the color average we numerically calculate the photon production rate and discuss functional forms that fit the numerical results.

We especially focus on the 4-quark vector couplings and the 8-quark vector NJL couplings and allocate a region in this parameter subspace where hybrid stars with masses larger than $2M_\odot$ exist.

We study the quark-hadron phase transition with the finite-size effects in neutron stars. The finite-size effects should be, generally, taken into account in the phase transition of multi-component system. The behavior of the phase transition, however, strongly depends on the models for quark and hadron matter, surface tension, neutrino fraction, and temperature. We find that, if the surface tension is strong, the EOS becomes similar to the case of a Maxwell construction for any hadron and/or quark model, though we adopt the Gibbs conditions. We also find that the mass-radius relations for that EOS are consistent with the observations, and our model is then applicable to realistic astrophysical phenomena such as the thermal evolution of compact stars.

We introduce an effective quark-meson-nucleon model for the QCD phase transitions at finite baryon density. The nucleon and the quark degrees of freedom are described within a unified framework of a chiral linear sigma model. The deconfinement transition is modeled through a simple modification of the distribution functions of nucleons and quarks, where an additional auxiliary field, the bag field, is introduced. The bag field plays a key role in converting between the nucleon and the quark degrees of freedom. The model predicts that the chiral and the deconfinement phase transitions are always separated. Depending on the model parameters, the chiral transition occurs in the baryon density range of $(1.5-15.5)n_0$, while the deconfinement transition occurs above $5 n_0$, where $n_0$ is the saturation density.

Aims: We present a new microscopic hadron-quark hybrid equation of state model for astrophysical applications, from which compact hybrid star configurations are constructed. These are composed of a quark core and a hadronic shell with a first-order phase transition at their interface. The resulting mass-radius relations are in accordance with the latest astrophysical constraints. Methods: The quark matter description is based on a quantum chromodynamics (QCD) motivated chiral approach with higher-order quark interactions in the Dirac scalar and vector coupling channels. For hadronic matter we select a relativistic mean-field equation of state with density-dependent couplings. Since the nucleons are treated in the quasi-particle framework, an excluded volume correction has been included for the nuclear equation of state at suprasaturation density which takes into account the finite size of the nucleons. Results: These novel aspects, excluded volume in the hadronic phase and the higher-order repulsive interactions in the quark phase, lead to a strong first-order phase transition with large latent heat, i.e. the energy-density jump at the phase transition, which fulfils a criterion for a disconnected third-family branch of compact stars in the mass-radius relationship. These twin stars appear at high masses ($\sim$ 2 M$_\odot$) that are relevant for current observations of high-mass pulsars. Conclusions: This analysis offers a unique possibility by radius observations of compact stars to probe the QCD phase diagram at zero temperature and large chemical potential and even to support the existence of a critical point in the QCD phase diagram.

We analyze a classically scale invariant extension of the Standard Model with dark gauge $U(1)_X$ broken by doubly charge scalar $Φ$ leaving a remnant $Z_2$ symmetry. Dark fermions are introduced as dark matter candidates and for anomaly reasons we introduce two chiral fermions. Due to classical scale invariance, bare mass term that would mix these two states is absent and they end up as stable Majorana fermions $N_1$ and $N_2$. We calculate cross sections for $N_aN_a \to φφ$, $N_aN_a \to X^μφ$ and $N_2N_2 \to N_1N_1$ annihilation channels. We put constraints to the model from the Higgs searches at the LHC, dark matter relic abundance and dark matter direct detection limits by LUX. The dark gauge boson plays a crucial role in the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism and has to be heavier then 680 GeV. The viable mass region for dark matter is from 470 GeV up to a few TeV. In the case when two Majorana fermions have different masses, two dark matter signals at direct detection experiments could provide a distinctive signature of this model.

The Witten-Veneziano relation, or, alternatively, its generalization proposed by Shore, facilitates understanding and describing the complex of eta and eta' mesons. We present an analytic, closed-form solution to Shore's equations which gives results on the eta-eta' complex in full agreement with results previously obtained numerically. Although the Witten-Veneziano relation and Shore's equations are related, the ways they were previously used in the context of dynamical models to calculate eta and eta' properties, were rather different. However, with the analytic solution, the calculation can be formulated similarly to the approach through the Witten-Veneziano relation, and with some conceptual improvements. In the process, one strengthens the arguments in favor of a possible relation between the U_A(1) and SU_A(3) chiral symmetry breaking and restoration. To test this scenario, the experiments such as those at RHIC, NICA and FAIR, which extend the RHIC (and LHC) high-temperature scans also to the finite-density parts of the QCD phase diagram, should pay particular attention to the signatures from the eta'-eta complex indicating the symmetry restoration.

We construct static hybrid star sequences and find that our model can support stable hybrid stars with an onset of quark matter below $2 M_\odot$ and a maximum mass above $2.17 M_\odot$ in agreement with recent observations. If the finite-size effects are taken into account the core is composed of pure quark matter. Provided that the quark vector channel interaction is small, and the finite size effects are taken into account, quark matter appears at densities 2-3 times the nuclear saturation density. In that case the proton fraction in the hadronic phase remains below the value required by the onset of the direct URCA process, so that the early onset of quark matter shall affect on the rapid cooling of the star.

Scale invariance is broken via Coleman-Weinberg mechanism providing the vacuum expectation value of the scalar $Φ$. Stability of the dark matter candidate $N$ is guaranteed by a remnant $Z_2$ symmetry. The Higgs boson mass and the mass of the Dark Matter particle have a common origin, the vacuum expectation value of $Φ$. Dark matter relic abundance is determined by annihilation $NN \to ΦΦ$. We present two types of models for hybrid compact stars composed of a quark core and a hadronic mantle with an abrupt first order phase transition at the interface which are in accordance with the latest astrophysical measurements of two 2 M_sun pulsars. While the first is a schematic one, the second one is based on a QCD motivated nonlocal PNJL model with density-dependent vector coupling strength. Both models support the possibility of so called twin compact stars which have the same mass but different radius and internal structure at high mass (~2 M_sun), provided they exhibit a large jump Δεin the energy density of the first order phase transition fulfilling Δε/ε_crit > 0.6. We conclude that the measurement of high-mass twin stars would support the existence of a first order phase transition in symmetric matter at zero temperature entailing the existence of a critical end point in the QCD phase diagram.

In this paper we detail the thermodynamics of two flavor nonlocal Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio models for different parametrizations of the quark interaction regulators. The structure of the model is upgraded in order to allow for terms in the quark selfenergy which violate Lorentz invariance due to the presence of the medium. We examine the critical properties, the phase diagram as well as the equation of state. Furthermore, some aspects of the Mott effect for pions and sigma mesons are discussed explicitly within a nonlocal Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. In particular, we continued the meson polarization function in the complex energy plane and under certain approximations, we were able to extract the imaginary part as a function of the meson energy. We were not able to calculate the dynamical meson mass, and therefore resorted to a technical study of the temperature dependence of the meson width by replacing the meson energy with the temperature dependent spatial meson mass. Our results show that while the temperature behavior of the meson widths is qualitatively the same for a wide class of covariant regulators, the special case where the nonlocal interactions are introduced via the instanton liquid model singles out with a drastically different behavior.

Nonlocal PNJL models allow for a detailed description of chiral quark dynamics with running quark masses and wave function renormalization in accordance with lattice QCD (LQCD) in vacuum. Their generalization to finite temperature T and chemical potential μ allows to reproduce the μ-dependence of the pseudocritical temperature from LQCD when a nonvanishing vector meson coupling is adjusted. This restricts the region for the critical endpoint in the QCD phase diagram and stiffens the quark matter equation of state (EoS). It is demonstrated that the construction of a hybrid EoS for compact star applications within a two-phase approach employing the nonlocal PNJL EoS and an advanced hadronic EoS leads to the masquerade problem. A density dependence of the vector meson coupling is suggested as a possible solution which can be adjusted in a suitable way to describe hybrid stars with a maximum mass in excess of 2 M_sun with a possible early onset of quark deconfinement even in the cores of typical (M ~ 1.4 M_sun) neutron stars.

Motivated by the ongoing measurements of the Primakoff process pi- gamma* --> pi- pi0 by COMPASS collaboration at CERN, the transition form factor for the canonical anomalous process gamma* --> pi+ pi0 pi- is calculated in a constituent quark loop model. The simplest contribution to this process is the quark "box" amplitude. In the present paper we also explicitly include the vector meson degrees of freedom, i.e., the rho and the omega, thus giving rise to additional, resonant contributions. We find that in order to satisfy the axial anomaly result, a further subtraction in the resonant part is needed. The results are then compared with the vector meson dominance model as well as the Dyson--Schwinger calculations, the chiral perturbation theory result, and the available data.

We discuss and propose the minimal generalization of the Witten-Veneziano relation to finite temperatures, prompted by STAR and PHENIX experimental results on the multiplicity of eta' mesons. After explaining why these results show that the zero-temperature Witten-Veneziano relation cannot be straightforwardly extended to temperatures T too close to the chiral restoration temperature T_Ch and beyond, we find the quantity which should replace, at T>0, the Yang-Mills topological susceptibility appearing in the T=0 Witten-Veneziano relation, in order to avoid the conflict with experiment at T>0. This is illustrated through concrete T-dependences of pseudoscalar meson masses in a chirally well-behaved, Dyson-Schwinger approach, but our results and conclusions are of a more general nature and, essentially, model-independent.
