SIC-POVMs from Stark Units: Dimensions n^2+3=4p, p prime
Abstract: The existence problem for maximal sets of equiangular lines (or SICs) in complex Hilbert space of dimension $d$ remains largely open. In a previous publication (arXiv:2112.05552) we gave a conjectural algorithm for how to construct a SIC if $d = n^2+3 = p$, a prime number. Perhaps the most surprising number-theoretical aspect of that algorithm is the appearance of Stark units in a key role: a sing… ▽ More

Impact of limited temporal resolution on 4D Monte Carlo dose calculation for intensity modulated proton therapy
Abstract: The interplay between the beam delivery time structure and the patient motion makes 4D dose calculation (4DDC) important when treating moving tumors with intensity modulated proton therapy. 4DDC based on phase sorting of a 4DCT suffers from approximation errors in the assignment of spots to phases, since the temporal image resolution of the 4DCT is much lower than that of the delivery time structu… ▽ More

Lars Brink and SIC_POVMs
Abstract: The notion of SIC-POVMs comes from quantum information theory, and they were not on the horizon when I was Lars Brink's student in the early 80s. In the summer of 2022 I told Lars that I know how to use number theoretical insights to construct SIC-POVMs in any Hilbert space of dimension $n^2+3$, and that the construction provides a geometric setting for some deep number theoretical conjectures. Dimension towers of SICs. II. Some constructions
Abstract: A SIC is a maximal equiangular tight frame in a finite dimensional Hilbert space. Given a SIC in dimension $d$, there is good evidence that there always exists an aligned SIC in dimension $d(d-2)$, having predictable symmetries and smaller equiangular tight frames embedded in them. We provide a recipe for how to calculate sets of vectors in dimension $d(d-2)$ that share these properties. They cons… ▽ More

Abstract: In Newtonian gravity it is a moot question whether energy should be localized in the field or inside matter. Abstract: We propose a recipe for constructing a SIC fiducial vector in complex Hilbert space of dimension of the form $d=n^2+3$, focussing on prime dimensions $d=p$. The monomial representations of the Clifford group
Abstract: We show that the Clifford group - the normaliser of the Weyl-Heisenberg group - can be represented by monomial phase-permutation matrices if and only if the dimension is a square number. This simplifies expressions for SIC vectors, and has other applications to SICs and to Mutually Unbiased Bases. Exact solutions for SICs in dimension 16 are presented for the first time.

The region with trapped surfaces in spherical symmetry, its core, and their boundaries
Abstract: We consider the region $\mathscr{T}$ in spacetime containing future-trapped closed surfaces and its boundary $\B$, and derive some of their general properties. We then concentrate on the case of spherical symmetry, but the methods we use are general and applicable to other situations. We argue that closed trapped surfaces have a non-local property, "clairvoyance", which is inherited by $\B$. We pr… ▽ More

On mutually unbiased bases
Abstract: Mutually unbiased bases for quantum degrees of freedom are central to all theoretical investigations and practical exploitations of complementary properties. Much is known about mutually unbiased bases, but there are also a fair number of important questions that have not been answered in full as yet. In particular, one can find maximal sets of ${N+1}$ mutually unbiased bases in Hilbert spaces of… ▽ More

Where are the trapped surfaces?
Abstract: We discuss the boundary of the spacetime region through each point of which a trapped surface passes, first in some simple soluble examples, and then in the self-similar Vaidya solution. For the latter the boundary must lie strictly inside the event horizon. We present a class of closed trapped surfaces extending strictly outside the apparent horizon.

Pentagrams and paradoxes
Abstract: Klyachko and coworkers consider an orthogonality graph in the form of a pentagram, and in this way derive a Kochen-Specker inequality for spin 1 systems. In some low-dimensional situations Hilbert spaces are naturally organised, by a magical choice of basis, into SO(N) orbits. Combining these ideas some very elegant results emerge. We give a careful discussion of the pentagram operator, and then… ▽ More
