Ensuring non-interpenetration of matter is a fundamental prerequisite when modeling the deformation response of solid materials. In this contribution, we thoroughly examine how this requirement, equivalent to the injectivity of deformations within bulk structures, manifests itself in dimensional-reduction problems. Specifically, we focus on the case of rods embedded in a two-dimensional plane. Our results focus on $Γ$-limits of energy functionals that enforce an admissible deformation to be a homeomorphism. These $Γ$-limits are evaluated along a passage from the bulk configuration to the rod arrangement. The proofs rely on the equivalence between the weak and strong closures of the set of homeomorphisms from $\mathbb{R}$ to $\mathbb{R}^2$, a result that is of independent interest and that we establish in this paper, too.

We analyze a mathematical model that describes the interaction between an insulating rigid body and an incompressible electrically conducting fluid surrounding it. The model as well as the mathematical analysis involve the fields of fluid-structure interaction and of magnetohydrodynamics. Our main result shows the existence of a weak solution to the corresponding system of partial differential equations. The proof relies on a use of a time discretization via the Rothe method to decouple the system. This allows us to deal with test functions, depending on the position of the moving body and therefore on the solution of the system, in the weak formulation of the induction equation. The proof moreover makes use of the Brinkman penalization in order to cope with the mechanical part of the problem.

The work presents a thermomechanical model for polycrystalline NiTi-based shape memory alloys developed within the framework of generalized standard solids, which is able to cover loading-mode dependent localization of the martensitic transformation. The key point is the introduction of a novel austenite-martensite interaction term responsible for strain-softening of the material. Mathematical properties of the model are analyzed and a suitable regularization and a time-discrete approximation for numerical implementation to the finite-element method are proposed. Model performance is illustrated on two numerical simulations: tension of a superelastic NiTi ribbon and bending of a superelastic NiTi tube.

We study the branching of twins appearing in shape memory alloys at the interface between austenite and martensite. In the framework of three-dimensional non-linear elasticity theory, we propose an explicit, low-energy construction of the branched microstructure, generally applicable to any shape memory material without restrictions on the symmetry class of martensite or on the geometric parameters of the interface. We show that the suggested construction follows the expected energy scaling law, i.e., that (for the surface energy of the twins being sufficiently small) the branching leads to energy reduction. Furthermore, the construction can be modified to capture different features of experimentally observed microstructures without violating this scaling law. By using a numerical procedure, we demonstrate that the proposed construction is able to predict realistically the twin width and the number of branching generations in a Cu-Al-Ni single crystal.

We use gradient Young measures generated by Lipschitz maps to define a relaxation of integral functionals which are allowed to attain the value $+\infty$ and can model ideal locking in elasticity as defined by Prager in 1957. Furthermore, we show the existence of minimizers for variational problems for elastic materials with energy densities that can be expressed in terms of a function being continuous in the deformation gradient and convex in the gradient of the cofactor (and possibly also the gradient of the determinant) of the corresponding deformation gradient. We call the related energy functional gradient polyconvex. Thus, instead of considering second derivatives of the deformation gradient as in second-grade materials, only a weaker higher integrability is imposed. Although the second-order gradient of the deformation is not included in our model, gradient polyconvex functionals allow for an implicit uniform positive lower bound on the determinant of the deformation gradient on the closure of the domain representing the elastic body. Consequently, the material does not allow for extreme local compression.

The model is phrased in Eulerian coordinates and consists in particular of (i) a Navier-Stokes equation that involves magnetic and elastic terms in the stress tensor obtained by a variational approach, of (ii) a regularized transport equation for the deformation gradient and of (iii) the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation for the dynamics of the magnetization. The proof is built on a Galerkin method and a fixed-point argument. It is based on ideas from F.-H. Lin and the third author for systems modeling the flow of liquid crystals as well as on methods by G. Carbou and P. Fabrie for solutions of the Landau-Lifshitz equation.

Minimization is a reoccurring theme in many mathematical disciplines ranging from pure to applied ones. Of particular importance is the minimization of integral functionals that is studied within the calculus of variations. Proofs of the existence of minimizers usually rely on a fine property of the involved functional called weak lower semicontinuity. While early studies of lower semicontinuity go back to the beginning of the 20th century the milestones of the modern theory were set by C.B. Morrey Jr. in 1952 and N.G. Meyers in 1965. We recapitulate the development on this topic from then on. Special attention is paid to signed integrands and to applications in continuum mechanics of solids. In particular, we review the concept of polyconvexity and special properties of (sub)determinants with respect to weak lower semicontinuity. Besides, we emphasize some recent progress in lower semicontinuity of functionals along sequences satisfying differential and algebraic constraints which have applications in elasticity to ensure injectivity and orientation-preservation of deformations. Finally, we outline generalization of these results to more general first-order partial differential operators and make some suggestions for further reading.

We characterize lower semicontinuity of integral functionals with respect to weak$^*$ convergence in $\mathrm{BV}$, including integrands whose negative part has linear growth. In addition, we allow for sequences without a fixed trace at the boundary. In this case, both the integrand and the shape of the boundary play a key role. This is made precise in our newly found condition -- quasi-sublinear growth from below at points of the boundary -- which compensates for possible concentration effects generated by the sequence. Our work extends some recent results by J. Kristensen and F. Rindler (Arch. Rat. Mech. Anal. 197 (2010), 539--598 and Calc. Var. 37 (2010), 29--62).

Motivated by variational problems in nonlinear elasticity depending on the deformation gradient and its inverse, we completely and explicitly describe Young measures generated by matrix-valued map**s $\{Y_k\}_{k\in\N} \subset L^p(Ø;\R^{n\times n})$, $Ø\subset\R^n$, such that $\{Y_k^{-1}\}_{k\in\N} \subset L^p(Ø;\R^{n\times n})$ is bounded, too. Moreover, the constraint $\det Y_k>0$ can be easily included and is reflected in a condition on the support of the measure. This condition typically occurs in problems of nonlinear-elasticity theory for hyperelastic materials if $Y:=\nabla y$ for $y\in W^{1,p}(Ø;\R^n)$. Then we fully characterize the set of Young measures generated by gradients of a uniformly bounded sequence in $W^{1,\infty}(Ø;\R^n)$ where the inverted gradients are also bounded in $L^\infty(Ø;\R^{n\times n})$. This extends the original results due to D. Kinderlehrer and P. Pedregal.
