While it is known that strongly correlated transition metal oxides described by multi-band Hubbard model show microscopic multiscale phase separation little is known on the possibility to manipulate them with vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) 27 eV lighting. We have investigated the photo-induced effects of VUV illumination of a super-oxygenated La2NiO4+y single crystal by means of scanning photoelectron microscopy. VUV light exposure induces the increase of the density of states (DOS) in the binding energy range around Eb =1.4 eV below EF. The photo-induced states in this energy region have been predicted as due to clustering of oxygen interstitials by band structure calculations for large supercell of La2CuO4.125. We finally show that it possible to generate and manipulate oxygen rich domains by VUV illumination as it was reported for X-ray illumination of La2CuO4+y. This phenomenology is assigned to oxygen-interstitials ordering and clustering by photo-illumination forming segregated domains in the La2NiO4+y surface

A strong $x$ dependent and sign reversed OIE on $T^{\ast}$ is observed. The OIE exponent $α_{T^{\ast}}$ systematically decreases from $α_{T^{\ast}} = - 0.6(1.3)$ for $x = 0.15$ to $α_{T^{\ast}} = - 4.4(1.1)$ for $x = 0.06$, corresponding to increasing $T^{\ast}$ and decreasing superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$. Both $T^{\ast}(^{16}{\rm O})$ and $T^{\ast}(^{18}{\rm O})$ exhibit a linear do** dependence with different slopes and critical end points (where $T^{\ast}(^{16}{\rm O})$ and $T^{\ast}(^{18}{\rm O})$ fall to zero) at $x_{c}(^{16}{\rm O}) = 0.201(4)$ and $x_{c}(^{18}{\rm O}) = 0.182(3)$, indicating a large positive OIE of $x_{c}$ with an exponent of $α_{x_{c}} = 0.84(22)$. The remarkably large and strongly do** dependent OIE on $T^{\ast}$ signals a substantial involvement of the lattice in the formation of the pseudogap, consistent with a polaronic approach to cuprate superconductivity and the vibronic character of its ground state.

Structural phase separation in A$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ system has been studied by different experimental techniques, however, it should be important to know how the electronic uniformity is influenced, on which length scale the electronic phases coexist, and what is their spatial distribution. Here, we have used novel scanning photoelectron microscopy (SPEM) to study the electronic phase separation in K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$, providing a direct measurement of the topological spatial distribution of the different electronic phases. The SPEM results reveal a peculiar interconnected conducting filamentary phase that is embedded in the insulating texture. The filamentary structure with a particular topological geometry could be important for the high T$_c$ superconductivity in the presence of a phase with a large magnetic moment in A$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ materials.

Our measurements reveal the absence of magnetic ordering below TDW = 58 K in the parent compound. Therefore the phase transition at this temperature observed by magnetometry is most likely due to the formation of a charge density wave (CDW). Upon substitution of barium by sodium in Ba1-xNaxTi2Sb2O we find for x = 0.25 superconductivity with a maximum T_{c} = 5.1 K in the magnetization and a bulk T_{c,bulk} = 4.5 K in the muSR measurements. The temperature dependency of the London penetration depth lambda^-2(T) of the optimally doped compound can be well explained within a conventional weak-coupling scenario in the clean limit.

The local structure and electronic properties of Rb$_{1-x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ are investigated by means of site selective polarized x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the iron and selenium K-edges as a function of pressure. A combination of dispersive geometry and novel nanodiamond anvil pressure-cell has permitted to reveal a step-like decrease in the Fe-Se bond distance at $p\simeq11$ GPa. The position of the Fe K-edge pre-peak, which is directly related to the position of the chemical potential, remains nearly constant until $\sim6$ GPa, followed by an increase until $p\simeq 11$ GPa. Here, as in the local structure, a step-like decrease of the chemical potential is seen. Thus, the present results provide compelling evidence that the origin of the reemerging superconductivity in $A_{1-x}$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ in vicinity of a quantum critical transition is caused mainly by the changes in the electronic structure.

An extended study of the superconducting and normal-state properties of various as-grown and post-annealed RbxFe2-ySe2 single crystals is presented. Magnetization experiments evidence that annealing of RbxFe2-ySe2 at 413 K, well below the onset of phase separation Tp=489 K, neither changes the magnetic nor the superconducting properties of the crystals. In addition, annealing at 563 K, well above Tp, suppresses the superconducting transition temperature Tc and leads to an increase of the antiferromagnetic susceptibility accompanied by the creation of ferromagnetic impurity phases, which are develo** with annealing time. However, annealing at T=488K=Tp increases Tc up to 33.3 K, sharpens the superconducting transition, increases the lower critical field, and strengthens the screening efficiency of the applied magnetic field. Resistivity measurements of the as-grown and optimally annealed samples reveal an increase of the upper critical field along both crystallographic directions as well as its anisotropy. Muon spin rotation and scanning transmission electron microscopy experiments suggest the coexistence of two phases below Tp: a magnetic majority phase of Rb2Fe4Se5 and a non-magnetic minority phase of Rb0.5Fe2Se2. Both microscopic techniques indicate that annealing the specimens just at Tp does not affect the volume fraction of the two phases, although the magnetic field distribution in the samples changes substantially. This suggests that the microstructure of the sample, caused by mesoscopic phase separation, is modified by annealing just at Tp, leading to an improvement of the superconducting properties of RbxFe2-ySe2 and an enhancement of Tc.

We investigate the effect of external pressure on magnetic order in undoped LnFeAsO (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, La) by using muon-spin relaxation measurements and ab-initio calculations. Both magnetic transition temperature $T_m$ and Fe magnetic moment decrease with external pressure. The effect is observed to be lanthanide dependent with the strongest response for Ln = La and the weakest for Ln = Sm. The trend is qualitatively in agreement with our DFT calculations. The same calculations allow us to assign a value of 0.68(2) $μ_B$ to the Fe moment, obtained from an accurate determination of the muon sites. Our data further show that the magnetic lanthanide order transitions do not follow the simple trend of Fe, possibly as a consequence of the different $f$-electron overlap.

An extended investigation of the electronic phase diagram of FeSe$_{1-x}$ up to pressures of $p\simeq2.4$\,GPa by means of ac and dc magnetization, zero field muon spin rotation (ZF $μ$SR), and neutron diffraction is presented. ZF $μ$SR indicates that at pressures $p\geq0.8$\,GPa static magnetic order occurs in FeSe$_{1-x}$ and occupies the full sample volume for $p\gtrsim 1.2$\,GPa. ac magnetization measurements reveal that the superconducting volume fraction stays close to 100% up to the highest pressure investigated. In addition, above $p\geq1.2$\,GPa both the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ and the magnetic ordering temperature $T_{\rm N}$ increase simultaneously, and both superconductivity and magnetism are stabilized with increasing pressure. Calculations indicate only one possible muon stop** site in FeSe$_{1-x}$, located on the line connecting the Se atoms along the $c$-direction. Different magnetic structures are proposed and checked by combining the muon stop** calculations with a symmetry analysis, leading to a similar structure as in the LaFeAsO family of Fe-based superconductors. Furthermore, it is shown that the magnetic moment is pressure dependent and with a rather small value of $μ\approx 0.2\,μ_B$ at $p\simeq2.4$\,GPa.

This unusual anisotropic behavior, together with a large zero-temperature effective magnetic penetration depth is possibly related to a superconducting state heavily biased by the coexisting antiferromagnetic phase.

Polycrystalline samples and single crystals of SmFeAs1-xPxO1-y were synthesized and grown employing different synthesis methods and annealing conditions. Depending on the phosphorus and oxygen content, the samples are either magnetic or superconducting. In the fully oxygenated compounds the main impact of phosphorus substitution is to suppress the Néel temperature TN of the spin density wave (SDW) state, and to strongly reduce the local magnetic field in the SDW state, as deduced from muon spin rotation measurements. On the other hand the superconducting state is observed in the oxygen deficient samples only after heat treatment under high pressure. Oxygen deficiency as a result of synthesis at high pressure brings the Sm-O layer closer to the superconducting As/P-Fe-As/P block and provides additional electron transfer. Interestingly, the structural modifications in response to this variation of the electron count are significantly different when phosphorus is partly substituting arsenic. Point contact spectra are well described with two superconducting gaps. Magnetic and resistance measurements on single crystals indicate an in-plane magnetic penetration depth of 200 nm and an anisotropy of the upper critical field slope of 4-5. The application of pressure leads to a substantial decrease of the magnetic ordering temperature T_N and a reduction of the magnetic phase volume and, at the same time, to a strong increase of the superconducting transition temperature T_c and the diamagnetic susceptibility. From the volume sensitive \muSR measurements it can be concluded that the superconducting and the magnetic areas which coexist in the same sample are inclined towards spatial separation and compete for phase volume as a function of pressure.

The anisotropy parameter gamma_H= H_c2_ab/H_c2_c increases monotonically with decreasing temperature. A single isotropic s-wave description of superconductivity cannot account for this behaviour. From magnetic field dependent muSR experiments the absolute value of the in-plane magnetic penetretion depth lambda_ab=78(3) nm was determined. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density rho_s(T) is slightly better described by a two-gap than a single-gap model.

The new compound Cs0.8(FeSe0.98)2 shows a slightly lower superconducting transition temperature (Tc=27.4 K) in comparison to 29.5 in K0.8(FeSe0.98)2). The volume of the crystal unit cell increases by replacing K by Cs - the c-parameter grows from 14.1353(13) Å to 15.2846(11) Å. For the so far known alkali metal intercalated layered compounds (K0.8Fe2Se2 and Cs0.8(FeSe0.98)2) the Tc dependence on the anion height (distance between Fe-layers and Se-layers) was found to be analogous to those reported for As-containing Fe-superconductors and Fe(Se1-xChx), where Ch=Te, S.

The magnetic order remains incommensurate for $y\geq 1$, but with increasing Fe content superconductivity is suppressed and the magnetic correlation length increases. The results show that the superconducting and the magnetic properties of the Fe$_{y}$Se$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$ can be tuned not only by varying the Se/Te ratio but also by changing the Fe content.

The currently available results of the isotope effect on the superconducting transition temperature T_c in Fe-based high-temperature superconductors (HTS) are highly controversial. The values of the Fe isotope effect (Fe-IE) exponent α_Fe for various families of Fe-based HTS were found to be as well positive, as negative, or even be exceedingly larger than the BCS value α_BCS=0.5. Here we demonstrate that the Fe isotope substitution causes small structural modifications which, in turn, affect T_c. Upon correcting the isotope effect exponent for these structural effects, an almost unique value of α~0.35-0.4 is observed for at least three different families of Fe-based HTS.

A study of the temperature and field dependence of the penetration depth λof the superconductor RbFe_2As_2 (T_c=2.52 K) was carried out by means of muon-spin rotation measurements. In addition to the zero temperature value of the penetration depth λ(0)=267(5) nm, a determination of the upper critical field B_c2(0)=2.6(2) T was obtained. The temperature dependence of the superconducting carrier concentration is discussed within the framework of a multi-gap scenario. Compared to the other "122" systems which exhibit much higher Fermi level, a strong reduction of the large gap BCS ratio 2Δ/k_B T_c is observed. This is interpreted as a consequence of the absence of interband processes. Indications of possible pair-breaking effect are also discussed.

Iron-chalcogenide single crystals with the nominal composition FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ and a transition temperature of $T_{c}\simeq14.6$ K were synthesized by the Bridgman method. The structural and anisotropic superconducting properties of those crystals were investigated by means of single crystal X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, SQUID and torque magnetometry, and muon-spin rotation. Room temperature neutron powder diffraction reveals that 95% of the crystal volume is of the same tetragonal structure as PbO. The structure refinement yields a stoichiometry of Fe_1.045Se_0.406Te_0.594. Additionally, a minor hexagonal Fe_7Se_8 impurity phase was identified. The magnetic penetration depth λat zero temperature was found to be 491(8) nm in the ab-plane and 1320(14) nm along the c-axis. The zero-temperature value of the superfluid density ρ_s(0) λ^-2(0) obeys the empirical Uemura relation observed for various unconventional superconductors, including cuprates and iron-pnictides. The temperature dependences of both λ_ab and λ_c are well described by a two-gap s+s-wave model with the zero-temperature gap values of Δ_S(0)=0.51(3) meV and Δ_L(0)=2.61(9) meV for the small and the large gap, respectively. The magnetic penetration depth anisotropy parameter γ_λ(T)=λ_c(T)/λ_{ab}(T) increases with decreasing temperature, in agreement with γ_λ(T) observed in the iron-pnictide superconductors.

We confirm the existence of a spin resonance in the superconducting phase of Fe1.01Se0.50Te0.50, at an energy of 7 meV and a wavevector of (1/2,1/2,0). The non-superconducting sample exhibits two incommensurate magnetic excitations at (1/2,1/2,0)\pm(0.18,-0.18,0) which rise steeply in energy, but no resonance is observed at low energies. A strongly dispersive low-energy magnetic excitation is also observed in Fe1.10Se0.25Te0.75 close to the commensurate antiferromagnetic ordering wavevector (1/2-δ,0,1/2) where δ\approx 0.03. The magnetic correlations in both samples are found to be quasi-two dimensional in character and persist well above the magnetic (Fe1.10Se0.25Te0.75) and superconducting (Fe1.01Se0.50Te0.50) transition temperatures.

The zero-temperature value of ρ_s increases with increasing transition temperature T_c (increasing pressure) following the tendency observed for various Fe-based and cuprate superconductors. The analysis of ρ_s(T) within the two-gap scheme reveals that the effect on both, T_c and ρ_s(0), is entirely determined by the band(s) where the large superconducting gap develops, while the band(s) with the small gap become practically unaffected.

At a pressure \simeq0.8GPa the non-magnetic and superconducting FeSe_1-x enters a region where long range static magnetic order is realized above T_c and bulk superconductivity coexists and competes on short length scales with the magnetic order below T_c. For even higher pressures an enhancement of both the magnetic and the superconducting transition temperatures as well as of the corresponding order parameters is observed. These exceptional properties make FeSe1-x to be one of the most interesting superconducting systems investigated extensively at present.

The samples were synthesized by two different methods: a 'low-temperature' one using powders as a starting material at T =700 C and a "high-temperature' method using solid pieces of Fe and Se at T= 1070 C. The effect of a starting (nominal) stoichiometry on the phase purity of the obtained samples, the superconducting transition temperature Tc, as well as the chemical instability of FeSe1-x at ambient conditions were investigated. It was found that in the Fe-Se system a stable phase exhibiting superconductivity at Tc~8K exists in a narrow range of selenium concentration (FeSe0.974(2)).
