We present a weak lensing analysis of the X-ray luminous cluster CL 0152-1357 at z~0.84 using HST/ACS observations. The unparalleled resolution and sensitivity of ACS enable us to measure weakly distorted, faint background galaxies to the extent that the number density reaches ~175 arcmin^-2. The PSF of ACS has a complicated shape that also varies across the field. We construct a PSF model for ACS from an extensive investigation of 47 Tuc stars in a modestly crowded region. We show that this model PSF excellently describes the PSF variation pattern in the cluster observation when a slight adjustment of ellipticity is applied. The high number density of source galaxies and the accurate removal of the PSF effect through moment-based deconvolution allow us to restore the dark matter distribution of the cluster in great detail. The direct comparison of the mass map with the X-ray morphology from Chandra observations shows that the two peaks of intracluster medium traced by X-ray emission are lagging behind the corresponding dark matter clumps, indicative of an on-going merger. The overall mass profile of the cluster can be well described by an NFW profile with a scale radius of r_s =309+-45 kpc and a concentration parameter of c=3.7+-0.5. The mass estimates from the lensing analysis are consistent with those from X-ray and Sunyaev-Zeldovich analyses. The predicted velocity dispersion is also in good agreement with the spectroscopic measurement from VLT observations. In the adopted WMAP cosmology, the total projected mass and the mass-to-light ratio within 1 Mpc are estimated to be 4.92+-0.44 10^14 solar mass and 95+-8 solar mass/solar luminosity, respectively.

We analyse deep multi-colour Advanced Camera images of the largest known gravitational lens, A1689. Radial and tangential arcs delineate the critical curves in unprecedented detail and many small counter-images are found near the center of mass. We construct a flexible light deflection field to predict the appearance and positions of counter-images. The model is refined as new counter-images are identified and incorporated to improve the model, yielding a total of 106 images of 30 multiply lensed background galaxies, spanning a wide redshift range, 1.0$<$z$<$5.5. The resulting mass map is more circular in projection than the clumpy distribution of cluster galaxies and the light is more concentrated than the mass within $r<50kpc/h$. The projected mass profile flattens steadily towards the center with a shallow mean slope of $d\logΣ/d\log r \simeq -0.55\pm0.1$, over the observed range, r$<250kpc/h$, matching well an NFW profile, but with a relatively high concentration, $C_{vir}=8.2^{+2.1}_{-1.8}$. A softened isothermal profile ($r_{core}=20\pm2$\arcs) is not conclusively excluded, illustrating that lensing constrains only projected quantities. Regarding cosmology, we clearly detect the purely geometric increase of bend-angles with redshift. The dependence on the cosmological parameters is weak due to the proximity of A1689, $z=0.18$, constraining the locus, $Ω_M+Ω_Λ \leq 1.2$. This consistency with standard cosmology provides independent support for our model, because the redshift information is not required to derive an accurate mass map. Similarly, the relative fluxes of the multiple images are reproduced well by our best fitting lens model.

We measure the luminosity function of morphologically selected E/S0 galaxies from $z=0.5$ to $z=1.0$ using deep high resolution Advanced Camera for Surveys imaging data. Our analysis covers an area of $48\Box\arcmin$ (8$\times$ the area of the HDF-N) and extends 2 magnitudes deeper ($I\sim24$ mag) than was possible in the Deep Groth Strip Survey (DGSS). At $0.5<z<0.75$, we find $M_B^*-5\log h_{0.7}=-21.1\pm0.3$ and $α=-0.53\pm0.2$, and at $0.75<z<1.0$, we find $M_B^*-5\log h_{0.7}=-21.4\pm0.2$. These luminosity functions are similar in both shape and number density to the luminosity function using morphological selection (e.g., DGSS), but are much steeper than the luminosity functions of samples selected using morphological proxies like the color or spectral energy distribution (e.g., CFRS, CADIS, or COMBO-17). The difference is due to the `blue', $(U-V)_0<1.7$, E/S0 galaxies, which make up to $\sim30%$ of the sample at all magnitudes and an increasing proportion of faint galaxies. We thereby demonstrate the need for {\it both morphological and structural information} to constrain the evolution of galaxies.
We find that the `blue' E/S0 galaxies have the same average sizes and Sersic parameters as the `red', $(U-V)_0>1.7$, E/S0 galaxies at brighter luminosities ($M_B<-20.1$), but are increasingly different at fainter magnitudes where `blue' galaxies are both smaller and have lower Sersic parameters. Fits of the colors to stellar population models suggest that most E/S0 galaxies have short star-formation time scales ($τ<1$ Gyr), and that galaxies have formed at an increasing rate from $z\sim8$ until $z\sim2$ after which there has been a gradual decline.

The properties of Ultra Compact Dwarf (UCD) galaxy candidates in Abell 1689 (z=0.183) are investigated, based on deep high resolution ACS images. A UCD candidate has to be unresolved, have i<28 (M_V<-11.5) mag and satisfy color limits derived from Bayesian photometric redshifts. We find 160 UCD candidates with 22<i<28 mag. It is estimated that about 100 of these are cluster members, based on their spatial distribution and photometric redshifts. For i>26.8 mag, the radial and luminosity distribution of the UCD candidates can be explained well by Abell 1689's globular cluster (GC) system. For i<26.8 mag, there is an overpopulation of 15 +/- 5 UCD candidates with respect to the GC luminosity function. For i<26 mag, the radial distribution of UCD candidates is more consistent with the dwarf galaxy population than with the GC system of Abell 1689. The UCD candidates follow a color-magnitude trend with a slope similar to that of Abell 1689's genuine dwarf galaxy population, but shifted fainter by about 2-3 mag. Two of the three brightest UCD candidates (M_V ~ -17 mag) are slightly resolved. At the distance of Abell 1689, these two objects would have King-profile core radii of ~35 pc and r_eff ~300 pc, implying luminosities and sizes 2-3 times those of M32's bulge. Additional photometric redshifts obtained with late type stellar and elliptical galaxy templates support the assignment of these two resolved sources to Abell 1689. Our findings imply that in Abell 1689 there are at least 10 UCDs with M_V<-12.7 mag. Compared to the UCDs in the Fornax cluster they are brighter, larger and have colors closer to normal dwarf galaxies. This suggests that they may be in an intermediate stage of the strip** process. Spectroscopy is needed to definitely confirm the existence of UCDs in Abell 1689.

(Abridged) We study the internal color properties of a morphologically selected sample of spheroidal galaxies taken from HST/ACS ERO program of UGC 10214 (``The Tadpole''). By taking advantage of the unprecedented high resolution of the ACS in this very deep dataset we are able to characterize spheroids at sub-arcseconds scales. Using the V_606W and I_814W bands, we construct V-I color maps and extract color gradients for a sample of spheroids at I_814W < 24 mag. We investigate the existence of a population of morphologically classified spheroids which show extreme variation in their internal color properties similar to the ones reported in the HDFs. These are displayed as blue cores and inverse color gradients with respect to those accounted from metallicity variations. Following the same analysis we find a similar fraction of early-type systems (~30%-40%) that show non-homologous internal colors, suggestive of recent star formation activity. We present two statistics to quantify the internal color variation in galaxies and for tracing blue cores, from which we estimate the fraction of non-homogeneous to homogeneous internal colors as a function of redshift up to z<1.2. We find that it can be described as about constant as a function of redshift, with a small increase with redshift for the fraction of spheroids that present strong color dispersions. The implications of a constant fraction at all redshifts suggests the existence of a relatively permanent population of evolving spheroids up to z~1. We discuss the implications of this in the context of spheroidal formation.

We have discovered 16 Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and have used them to provide the first conclusive evidence for cosmic deceleration that preceded the current epoch of cosmic acceleration. These objects, discovered during the course of the GOODS ACS Treasury program, include 6 of the 7 highest-redshift SNe Ia known, all at z>1.25, and populate the Hubble diagram in unexplored territory. The luminosity distances to these and 170 previous SNe Ia are provided. A purely kinematic interpretation of the SN Ia sample provides evidence at the > 99% confidence level for a transition from deceleration to acceleration or similarly, strong evidence for a cosmic jerk. Using a simple model of the expansion history, the transition between the two epochs is constrained to be at z=0.46 +/- 0.13. The data are consistent with the cosmic concordance model of Omega_M ~ 0.3, Omega_Lambda~0.7 (chi^2_dof=1.06), and are inconsistent with a simple model of evolution or dust as an alternative to dark energy. For a flat Universe with a cosmological constant. When combined with external flat-Universe constraints we find w=-1.02 + 0.13 - 0.19 (and $<-0.76 at the 95% confidence level) for an assumed static equation of state of dark energy, P = wρc^2. Joint constraints on both the recent equation of state of dark energy, $w_0$, and its time evolution, dw/dz, are a factor of ~8 more precise than its first estimate and twice as precise as those without the SNe Ia discovered with HST. Our constraints are consistent with the static nature of and value of w expected for a cosmological constant (i.e., w_0 = -1.0, dw/dz = 0), and are inconsistent with very rapid evolution of dark energy. We address consequences of evolving dark energy for the fate of the Universe.

We report the discovery of a strongly lensed arc system around a field elliptical galaxy in Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) images of a parallel field observed during NICMOS observations of the HST Ultra-Deep Field. The ACS parallel data comprise deep imaging in the F435W, F606W, F775W, and F850LP bandpasses. The main arc is at a radius of 1.6 arcsec from the galaxy center and subtends about 120 deg. Spectroscopic follow-up at Magellan Observatory yields a redshift z=0.6174 for the lensing galaxy, and we photometrically estimate z_phot = 2.4\pm0.3 for the arc. We also identify a likely counter-arc at a radius of 0.6 arcsec, which shows structure similar to that seen in the main arc. We model this system and find a good fit to an elliptical isothermal potential of velocity dispersion $σ\approx 300$ \kms, the value expected from the fundamental plane, and some external shear. Several other galaxies in the field have colors similar to the lensing galaxy and likely make up a small group.

We have discovered three globular clusters beyond the Holmberg radius in Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys images of the gas-rich dark matter dominated blue compact dwarf galaxy NGC2915. The clusters, all of which start to resolve into stars, have M_{V606} = -8.9 to -9.8 mag, significantly brighter than the peak of the luminosity function of Milky Way globular clusters. Their colors suggest a metallicity [Fe/H] ~ -1.9 dex, typical of metal-poor Galactic globular clusters. The specific frequency of clusters is at a minimum normal, compared to spiral galaxies. However, since only a small portion of the system has been surveyed it is more likely that the luminosity and mass normalized cluster content is higher, like that seen in elliptical galaxies and galaxy clusters. This suggests that NGC2915 resembles a key phase in the early hierarchical assembly of galaxies - the epoch when much of the old stellar population has formed, but little of the stellar disk. Depending on the subsequent interaction history, such systems could go on to build-up larger elliptical galaxies, evolve into normal spirals, or in rare circumstances remain suspended in their development to become systems like NGC2915.

We present the analysis of the faint galaxy population in the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) Early Release Observation fields VV 29 (UGC 10214) and NGC 4676. Here we attempt to thoroughly consider all aspects relevant for faint galaxy counting and photometry, develo** methods which are based on public software and that are easily reproducible by other astronomers. Using simulations we determine the best SExtractor parameters for the detection of faint galaxies in deep HST observations, paying special attention to the issue of deblending, which significantly affects the normalization and shape of the number count distribution. We confirm, as claimed by Bernstein, Freedman and Madore (2002), that Kron-like magnitudes, such as the ones generated by SExtractor, can miss more than half of the light of faint galaxies, what dramatically affects the slope of the number counts. We present catalogs for the VV 29 and NGC 4676 fields with photometry in the g,V and I bands. We also show that combining the bayesian software BPZ with superb ACS data and new spectral templates enables us to estimate reliable photometric redshifts for a significant fraction of galaxies with as few as three filters. After correcting for selection effects, we measure slopes of 0.32+- 0.01 for 22 < g < 28, 0.34+-0.01 for 22< V <27.5 and 0.33+-0.01 for 22 < I < 27. The counts do not flatten (except perhaps in the g-band), up to the depth of our observations. We find that the faint counts m_{AB}> 25.5 can be well approximated in all our filters by a passive luminosity evolution model based on the COMBO-17 luminosity function (α=-1.5), with a strong merging rate following the prescription of Glazebrook et al. (1994), φ^*\propto (1+Qz), with Q=4.

We use extensive multi-wavelength photometric data from the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) to estimate photometric redshifts for a sample of 434 galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts in the Chandra Deep Field South. Using the Bayesian method, which incorporates redshift/magnitude priors, we estimate photometric redshifts for galaxies in the range 18 < R (AB) < 25.5, giving an rms scatter of 0.11. The outlier fraction is < 10%, with the outlier-clipped rms being 0.047. We examine the accuracy of photometric redshifts for several, special sub--classes of objects. The results for extremely red objects are more accurate than those for the sample as a whole, with rms of 0.051 and very few outliers (3%). Photometric redshifts for active galaxies, identified from their X-ray emission, have a dispersion of 0.104, with 10% outlier fraction, similar to that for normal galaxies. Employing a redshift/magnitude prior in this process seems to be crucial in improving the agreement between photometric and spectroscopic redshifts.

We investigate the color-magnitude (CM) relation of galaxies in the distant X-ray selected cluster RDCS1252.9-2927 at z=1.24 using images obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the Hubble Space Telescope in the F775W and F850LP bandpasses. We select galaxies based on morphological classifications extending about 3.5 mag down the galaxy luminosity function, augmented by spectroscopic membership information. At the core of the cluster is an extensive early-type galaxy population surrounding a central pair of galaxies that show signs of dynamical interaction. The early-type population defines a tight sequence in the CM diagram, with an intrinsic scatter in observed (i-z) of $0.029\pm0.007$ mag based on 52 galaxies, or $0.024\pm0.008$ mag for $\sim30$ ellipticals. Simulations using the latest stellar population models indicate an age scatter for the ellipticals of about 34%, with a mean age $\taul\gta2.6$ Gyr (corresponding to $z_L\gta2.7$), and the last star formation occurring at $z_{end}\gta1.5$. Transforming to rest-frame $(U-B)$, we conclude that the slope and scatter in the CM relation for morphologically selected early-type galaxies show little or no evidence for evolution out to $z\approx1.2$. Thus, elliptical galaxies were already well established in X-ray luminous clusters when the universe was a third of its present age.

Using an i-z dropout criterion, we determine the space density of z~6 galaxies from two deep ACS GTO fields with deep optical-IR imaging. A total of 23 objects are found over 46 arcmin^2, or ~0.5 objects/arcmin^2 down to z~27.3 (6 sigma; all AB mag) (including one probable z~6 AGN). Combining deep ISAAC data for our RDCS1252-2927 field (J~25.7 and Ks~25.0 (5 sigma)) and NICMOS data for the HDF North (JH~27.3 (5 sigma)), we verify that these dropouts have flat spectral slopes. i-dropouts in our sample range in luminosity from ~1.5 L* (z~25.6) to ~0.3 L* (z~27.3) with the exception of one very bright candidate at z~24.2. The half-light radii vary from 0.09" to 0.29", or 0.5 kpc to 1.7 kpc. We derive the z~6 rest-frame UV luminosity density using three different procedures, each utilizing simulations based on a CDF South V dropout sample. First, we compare our findings with a no-evolution projection of this V-dropout sample. We find 23+/-25% more i-dropouts than we predict. Adopting previous results to z~5, this works out to a 20+/-29% drop in the luminosity density from z~3 to z~6. Second, we use these same V-dropout simulations to derive a selection function for our i-dropout sample and compute the UV-luminosity density (7.2+/-2.5 x 10^25 ergs/s/Hz/Mpc^3 down to z~27). We find a 39+/-21% drop over the same redshift range. This is our preferred value and suggests a star formation rate of 0.0090+/-0.0031 M_sol/yr/Mpc^3 to z~27, or ~0.036+/- 0.012 M_sol/yr/Mpc^3 extrapolating the LF to the faint limit. Third, we follow a very similar procedure, but assume no incompleteness, finding a luminosity density which is ~2-3X lower. This final estimate constitutes a lower limit. All three estimates are within the canonical range of luminosity densities necessary for reionization of the universe at this epoch. (abridged)

Multicolor coronagraphic images of the circumstellar disk around HD141569A have been obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys. B, V, and I images show that the disk's previously-described multiple-ring structure is actually a continuous distribution of dust with a tightly-wound spiral structure. Two, more open spiral arms extend from the disk, one of which appears to reach the nearby binary star HD141569BC. Diffuse dust is seen up to 1200AU from HD141569A. Although planets may exist in the inner region of the disk, tidal interaction with HD141569BC seems more likely to be the cause of these phenomena. The disk appears redder than the star (B-V = 0.21 and V-I = 0.25), and its color is spatially uniform. A scattering asymmetry factor of g = 0.25-0.35 is derived. The azimuthal density distribution is asymmetric, varying by a factor of ~3 at some radii.

We present observations of the first two supernovae discovered with the recently installed Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the Hubble Space Telescope. The supernovae were found in Wide Field Camera images of the Hubble Deep Field North taken with the F775W, F850LP, and G800L optical elements as part of the ACS guaranteed time observation program. Spectra extracted from the ACS G800L grism exposures confirm that the objects are Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) at redshifts z=0.47 and z=0.95. Follow-up HST observations have been conducted with ACS in F775W and F850LP and with NICMOS in the near-infrared F110W bandpass, yielding a total of 9 flux measurements in the 3 bandpasses over a period of 50 days in the observed frame. We discuss many of the important issues in doing accurate photometry with the ACS. We analyze the multi-band light curves using two different fitting methods to calibrate the supernovae luminosities and place them on the SNe Ia Hubble diagram. The resulting distances are consistent with the redshift-distance relation of the accelerating universe model, although evolving intergalactic grey dust remains as a less likely possibility. The relative ease with which these SNe Ia were found, confirmed, and monitored demonstrates the potential ACS holds for revolutionizing the field of high-redshift SNe Ia, and therefore of testing the accelerating universe cosmology and constraining the "epoch of deceleration".

The processing steps include empirical determination of image offsets and rotation, cosmic ray rejection, image combination using the drizzle routine called via the STScI Pyraf package, object detection and photometry using SExtractor, and photometric redshift estimation in the event of multiple bandpasses. The products are encapsulated in XML markup for automated ingestion into the ACS Team archive.

We present the first Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) observations of young star clusters in the colliding/merging galaxy UGC 10214. The observations were made as part of the Early Release Observation (ERO) program for the newly installed ACS during service mission SM3B for the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Many young star clusters can be identified in the tails of UGC 10214, with ages ranging from ~3 Myr to 10 Myr. The extreme blue V-I (F606W-F814W) colors of the star clusters found in the tail of UGC 10214 can only be explained if strong emission lines are included with a young stellar population. This has been confirmed by our Keck spectroscopy of some of these bright blue stellar knots. The most luminous and largest of these blue knots has an absolute magnitude of M_V = -14.45, with a half-light radius of 161 pc, and if it is a single star cluster, would qualify as a super star cluster (SSC). Alternatively, it could be a superposition of multiple scaled OB associations or clusters. With an estimated age of ~ 4-5 Myr, its derived mass is < 1.3 x 10^6 solar masses. Thus the young stellar knot is unbound and will not evolve into a normal globular cluster. The bright blue clusters and associations are much younger than the dynamical age of the tail, providing strong evidence that star formation occurs in the tail long after it was ejected. UGC 10214 provides a nearby example of processes that contributed to the formation of halos and intra-cluster media in the distant and younger Universe.

The Early Data Release from the Sloan Digital Sky survey provides one of the largest multicolor photometric catalogs currently available to the astronomical community. In this paper we present the first application of photometric redshifts to the $\sim 6$ million extended sources within these data (with 1.8 million sources having $r' < 21$). Utilizing a range of photometric redshift techniques, from empirical to template and hybrid techniques, we investigate the statistical and systematic uncertainties present within the redshift estimates for the EDR data. For $r'<21$ we find that the redshift estimates provide realistic redshift histograms with an rms uncertainty in the photometric redshift relation of 0.035 at $r'<18$ and rising to 0.1 at $r'<21$. We conclude by describing how these photometric redshifts and derived quantities, such as spectral type, restframe colors and absolute magnitudes, are stored within the SDSS database. We provide sample queries for searching on photometric redshifts and list the current caveats and issues that should be understood before using these photometric redshifts in statistical analyses of the SDSS galaxies.

With a redshift of z~1.7, SN 1997ff is the most distant type Ia supernova discovered so far. This SN is close to several bright, z=0.6-0.9 galaxies, and we consider the effects of lensing by those objects on the magnitude of SN 1997ff. We estimate their velocity dispersions using the Tully-Fisher and Faber-Jackson relations corrected for evolution effects,and calculate, applying the multiple-plane lensing formalism, that SN 1997ff is magnified by 0.34+-0.12 mag. Due to the spatial configuration of the foreground galaxies, the shear from individual lenses partially cancels out,and the total distortion induced on the host galaxy is considerable smaller than that produced by a single lens having the same magnification. After correction for lensing, the revised distance to SN 1997ff is m-M=45.5 mag, which improves the agreement with the Omega_M=0.35, Omega_Lambda = 0.65 cosmology expected from lower-redshift SNe Ia, and is inconsistent at the ~3 sigma confidence level with a uniform gray dust model or a simple evolution model.

This hughe catalogue of clusters will allow detailed studies of the evolution of the cluster population with redshift which will constrain the cosmological model. The identification of the high redshift clusters should be done with a large telescope (like GTC) since Planck data alone will not provide any clue about the redshift of the clusters. In this work we show that an optical follow up of only 300 clusters (randomly selected from the Planck catalogue) is needed in order to distinguish models with or without a cosmological constant.

Scientists have speculated for decades about the possible consequences for life on Earth of a nearby supernova, but plausible candidates for such an event were lacking. Here we show that the Scorpius-Centaurus OB association, a group of young stars currently located at~130 parsecs from the Sun, has generated 20 SN explosions during the last 11 Myr, some of them probably as close as 40 pc to our planet. We find that the deposition on Earth of 60Fe atoms produced by these explosions can explain the recent measurements of an excess of this isotope in deep ocean crust samples. We propose that ~2 Myr ago, one of the SNe exploded close enough to Earth to seriously damage the ozone layer, provoking or contributing to the Pliocene-Pleistocene boundary marine extinction.

We present discovery spectra of a sample of eight lensed galaxies at high redshift, 3.7<z<5.2, selected by their red colors in the fields of four massive clusters: A1689, A2219, A2390, and AC114. Metal absorption lines are detected and observed to be blueshifted by 300-800 km/s with respect to the centroid of Ly-alpha emission. A correlation is found between this blueshift and the equivalent width of the metal lines, which we interpret as a broadening of saturated absorption lines caused by a dispersion in the outflow velocity of interstellar gas. Local starburst galaxies show similar behavior, associated with obvious gas outflows. We also find a trend of increasing equivalent width of Ly-alpha emission with redshift, which may be a genuine evolutionary effect towards younger stellar populations at high redshift with less developed stellar continua. No obvious emission is detected below the Lyman limit in any of our spectra, nor in deep U or B-band images. The UV continua are reproduced well by early B-stars, although some dust absorption would allow a fit to hotter stars. After correcting for the lensing, we derive small physical sizes for our objects, ~0.5-5 kpc/h for a flat cosmology with Omega_m=0.3, Omega_Lambda=0.7. The lensed images are only marginally resolved in good seeing despite their close proximity to the critical curve, where large arcs are visible and hence high magnifications of up to ~20x are inferred. Two objects show a clear spatial extension of the Ly-alpha emission relative to the continuum starlight, indicating a ``breakout'' of the gas. The sizes of our galaxies together with their large gas motion suggests that outflows of gas are common at high redshift and associated with galaxy formation.

We show how future measurements of the SZ effect (SZE) can be used to constrain the cosmological parameters. We combine the SZ information expected from the Planck full-sky survey, N(S), where no redshift information is included, with the N(z) obtained from an optically-identified SZ-selected survey covering less than 1% of the sky. We demonstrate how with a small subsample (approx. 300 clusters) of the whole SZ catalogue observed optically it is possible to drastically reduce the degeneracy among the cosmological parameters. We have studied the requirements for performing the optical follow-up and we show the feasibility of such a project. Finally we have compared the cluster expectations for Planck with those expected for Newton-XMM during their lifetimes. It is shown that, due to its larger sky coverage, Planck will detect a factor approx. 5 times more clusters than Newton-XMM and also with a larger redshift coverage.

Gravitational lensing predicts an enhancement of the density of bright, distant QSOs around foreground galaxies. We measure this QSO-galaxy correlation w_qg for two complete samples of radio-loud quasars, the southern 1Jy and Half-Jansky samples. The existence of a positive correlation between z~1 quasars and z~0.15 galaxies is confirmed at a p=99.0% significance level (>99.9%) if previous measurements on the northern hemisphere are included). A comparison with the results obtained for incomplete quasar catalogs (e.g. the Veron-Cetty and Veron compilation) suggests the existence of an `identification bias', which spuriously increases the estimated amplitude of the quasar-galaxy correlation for incomplete samples. This effect may explain many of the surprisingly strong quasar-galaxy associations found in the literature. Nevertheless, the value of w_qg that we measure in our complete catalogs is still considerably higher than the predictions from weak lensing. We consider two effects which could help to explain this discrepancy: galactic dust extinction and strong lensing.

For samples with appropriate redshift distributions, w_{fb} is proportional to Omega<delta g>, where delta and g are respectively the foreground dark matter and galaxy surface density fluctuations. Therefore, Omega/b is proportional to the ratio w_{fb}/w, where w is equivalent to <gg>, the foreground galaxy angular two-point correlation function, b is the biasing factor, and the proportionality factor is independent of the dark matter power spectrum. Simple estimations show that the application of this method to the galaxy and quasar samples generated by the upcoming Sloan Sky Digital Survey will achieve a highly accurate and well resolved measurement of the ratio Omega/b.

We detect a distant cluster of galaxies centered on the QSO lens and luminous X-ray source AXJ2019+112, a.k.a. ``The Dark Cluster'' (Hattori et al 1997). Using deep V,I Keck images and wide-field K_s imaging from the NTT, a tight red sequence of galaxies is identified within a radius of 0.2 h^{-1} Mpc of the known z=1.01 elliptical lensing galaxy. The sequence, which includes the central elliptical galaxy, has a slope in good agreement with the model predictions of Kodama et al (1998) for z~1. We estimate the integrated rest-frame luminosity of the cluster to be L_V > 3.2 x 10^{11}h^{-2}L_{\sun} (after accounting for significant extinction at the low latitude of this field), more than an order of magnitude higher than previous estimates. The central region of the cluster is deconvolved using the technique of Magain, Courbin & Sohy (1998), revealing a thick central arc coincident with an extended radio source. All the observed lensing features are readily explained by differential magnification of a radio loud AGN by a shallow elliptical potential. The QSO must lie just outside the diamond caustic, producing two images, and the arc is a highly magnified image formed from a region close to the center of the host galaxy, projecting inside the caustic. The mass--to--light ratio within an aperture of 0.4 h ^{-1} Mpc is M_x/L_V= 224^{+112}_{-78}h(M/L_V)_{\sun}, using the X-ray temperature. The strong lens model yields a compatible value, M/L_V= 372^{+94}_{-94}h(M/L_V)_{\sun}, whereas an independent weak lensing analysis sets an upper limit of M/L_V <520 h(M/L_V)_{\sun}, typical of massive clusters.

Four elliptical profile galaxies are identified in the redshift range z=1-2, all with very red SEDs, implying ages of >2 Gyrs for standard passive evolution. We also find later type IR-luminous galaxies at similarly high redshift, (10 objects with z>1, H<25), whose weak UV emission implies single burst ages of >1 Gyr. The number and luminosity-densities of these galaxies are comparable with the local E/SO-Sbc populations for Ω_m>0.2, and in the absence of a significant cosmological constant, we infer that the major fraction of luminous Hubble-sequence galaxies have evolved little since z~2. A highly complete photometric redshift distribution is constructed to H=25 (69 galaxies) showing a broad spread of redshift, peaking at z~1.5, in reasonable agreement with some analyses of the HDF. Five `dropout' galaxies are detected at z~3.8, which are compact in the IR, ~0.5 kpc/h at rest 3500Å. No example of a blue IR luminous elliptical is found, restricting the star-formation epoch of ellipticals to z>10 for a standard IMF and modest extinction.

Photometric redshift estimation is becoming an increasingly important technique, although the currently existing methods present several shortcomings which hinder their application. Here it is shown that most of those drawbacks are efficiently eliminated when Bayesian probability is consistently applied to this problem. The use of prior probabilities and Bayesian marginalization allows the inclusion of valuable information, e.g. the redshift distributions or the galaxy type mix, which is often ignored by other methods. In those cases when the a priori information is insufficient, it is shown how to `calibrate' the prior distributions, using even the data under consideration. There is an excellent agreement between the 108 HDF spectroscopic redshifts and the predictions of the method, with a rms error Delta z/(1+z_spec) = 0.08 up to z<6 and no systematic biases nor outliers. The reliability of the method is further tested by restricting the color information to the UBVI filters. The results thus obtained are shown to be more reliable than those of standard techniques even when the latter include near-IR colors. The Bayesian formalism developed here can be generalized to deal with a wide range of problems which make use of photometric redshifts. Several applications are outlined, e.g. the estimation of individual galaxy characteristics as the metallicity, dust content, etc., or the study of galaxy evolution and the cosmological parameters from large multicolor surveys. Finally, using Bayesian probability it is possible to develop an integrated statistical method for cluster mass reconstruction which simultaneously considers the information provided by gravitational lensing and photometric redshifts.

The morphology obtained by the MDS team using high resolution images from HST/WFPC2 along with our NIR observations allow a Colour-Magnitude and Colour-Colour analysis that agrees in general with spectral evolution models (Bruzual & Charlot 1998) especially if a reasonable range of metallicities for the Simple Stellar Populations used (0.2 < Z/Zsolar < 2.5) is considered. However, a significant population of spheroids was found, which appear bluer than expected, confirming previous observations (Forbes et al. 1996, Koo et al. 1996, Glazebrook et al. 1998). This blueness might possibly signal the existence of non-negligible star formation in ellipticals and bulges at medium redshift. A number counts calculation for different morphological types show disks become the dominant population at faint magnitudes. The median redshift of the sample is z~0.2, from a photometric redshift estimation using V-K and I-K. A search for EROs in the survey field was also performed, with no detection of objects having I-K > 4.5, setting an upper limit to the number density of EROs at dn_{EROs}/dΩ< 0.011 arcmin^{-2} (K < 18.0).

We present the first application of lens magnification to measure the absolute mass of a galaxy cluster; Abell 1689. The absolute mass of a galaxy cluster can be measured by the gravitational lens magnification of a background galaxy population by the cluster potential. The lensing signal is complicated by the variation in number counts due to galaxy clustering and shot-noise, and by additional uncertainties in relating magnification to mass in the strong lensing regime. Clustering and shot-noise can be dealt with using maximum likelihood methods. Local approximations can then be used to estimate the mass from magnification. Alternatively if the lens is axially symmetric we show that the amplification equation can be solved nonlocally for the surface mass density and the tangential shear. In this paper we present the first maps of the total mass distribution in Abell 1689, measured from the deficit of lensed red galaxies behind the cluster. Although noisier, these reproduce the main features of mass maps made using the shear distortion of background galaxies but have the correct normalisation, finally breaking the ``sheet-mass'' degeneracy that has plagued lensing methods based on shear. We derive the cluster mass profile in the inner 4' (0.48 Mpc/h). These show a profile with a near isothermal surface mass density κ= (0.5+/-0.1)(θ/1')^{-1} out to a radius of 2.4' (0.28Mpc/h), followed by a sudden drop into noise. We find that the projected mass interior to 0.24 h^{-1}$Mpc is M(<0.24 Mpc/h)=(0.50+/- 0.09) \times 10^{15} Msol/h. We compare our results with masses estimated from X-ray temperatures and line-of-sight velocity dispersions, as well as weak shear and lensing arclets and find all are in fair agreement for Abell 1698.

A thorough study of QSO-galaxy correlations has been done on a region close to the North Galactic Pole using a complete subsample of the optically selected CFHT/MMT QSO survey and the galaxy catalog of Odewahn and Aldering (1995). Although a positive correlation between bright QSOs and galaxies is expected because of the magnification bias effect, none is detected. On the contrary, there is a significant (>99.6%) anticorrelation between z<1.6 QSOs and red galaxies on rather large angular distances. This anticorrelation is much less pronounced for high redshift z>1.6 QSOs, which seems to exclude dust as a cause of the QSO underdensity. This result suggests that the selection process employed in the CFHT/MMT QSO survey is losing up to 50% of low redshift z<1.6 QSOs in regions of high galaxy density. The incompleteness in the whole z<1.6 QSO sample may reach 10% and have important consequences in the estimation of QSO evolution and the QSO autocorrelation function.

Correlations between the magnification or polarization of background sources, induced by gravitational lensing due to the large-scale structure, and the positions of foreground galaxies are investigated. We found that their amplitude is enhanced with respect to correlations for a single population. We analize the dependence of the correlations with the density parameter Ωconsidering a nonlinear evolution of the matter power spectrum. The contribution of the linear evolution is negligible at scales below several arcminutes. Detailed results on the dependence of the correlations on the redshift of the foreground and background populations for different cosmological models are presented. The effect reaches its maximum amplitude for foreground populations with relatively small redshifts due to the fast increase of the nonlinear matter power spectrum at recent times.

We have performed RIJHK_S imaging of the field around the z=2.67 quasar Q0836+113, which presents several metal line and a damped Lyαabsorption systems in its spectrum. The images reveal the existence of a red K_S=18.9 object \approx 11 arcsec from the quasar. On the basis of the empirical relationships between absorption radius and luminosity we conclude that this object may be the CIV absorber at z=1.82. This could be the first detection of a high redshift galaxy causing high-ionisation absorption. After carefully subtracting the QSO, we do not detect, up to a 3σlimiting magnitude for extended objects of K_S=20.8, the damped Lyαabsorber apparently detected as a Lyαemitter at z=2.47. It is also suggested, that object ``SW'' from Wolfe et al. (1992) could be the galaxy responsible for the claimed MgII absorption at z=0.37.

We have studied the distribution of $B_J<20.5$ galaxies from the ROE/NRL COSMOS/UKST catalogue around two samples of $z>0.3$ QSOs with similar redshift distributions. The first sample is formed by 144 radio-loud QSOs from the Parkes Catalogue, and the other contains 167 optically selected QSOs extracted from the Large Bright Quasar Survey. It is found that there is a $\approx 99.0%$ significance level excess of COSMOS/UKST galaxies around the PKS QSOs, whereas there is a marginal defect of galaxies around the LBQS QSOs. When the distribution of galaxies around both samples is compared, we found that there is an overdensity of galaxies around the PKS sample with respect to the LBQS sample anticorrelated with the distance from the QSOs at a $99.7%$ significance level. Although this result apparently agrees with the predictions of the double magnification bias, it is difficult to explain by gravitational lensing effects alone; dust in the foreground galaxies and selection effects in the detection of LBQS QSOs should be taken into account. It has been established that the lines of sight to PKS flat-spectrum QSOs go through significatively higher foreground galaxy densities than the directions to LBQS quasars, what may be partially related with the reported reddening of PKS QSOs.

We have taken deep $R$-band images of fields around five radiogalaxies: 0956+47, 1217+36, 3C256, 3C324 and 3C294 with $1<z<2$ . 0956+47 is found to show a double nucleus. Our data on 1217+36 suggest the revision of its classification as a radiogalaxy. We found a statistically significant excess of bright ($19.5<R<22$) galaxies on scales of 2 arcmin around the radiogalaxies (which have $R \approx 21.4$) in our sample. The excess has been determined empirically to be at $\gtrsim 99.5\%$ level. It is remarkable that this excess is not present for $22<R<23.75$ galaxies within the same area, suggesting that the excess is not physically associated to the galaxies but due to intervening groups and then related to gravitational lensing.
