In this paper we derive a new two-dimensional brittle fracture model for thin shells via dimension reduction, where the admissible displacements are only normal to the shell surface. The main steps include to endow the shell with a small thickness, to express the three-dimensional energy in terms of the variational model of brittle fracture in linear elasticity, and to study the $Γ$-limit of the functional as the thickness tends to zero. The numerical discretization is tackled by first approximating the fracture through a phase field, following an Ambrosio-Tortorelli like approach, and then resorting to an alternating minimization procedure, where the irreversibility of the crack propagation is rigorously imposed via an inequality constraint. The minimization is enriched with an anisotropic mesh adaptation driven by an a posteriori error estimator, which allows us to sharply track the whole crack path by optimizing the shape, the size, and the orientation of the mesh elements. Finally, the overall algorithm is successfully assessed on two Riemannian settings and proves not to bias the crack propagation.

Approximation of the Mumford-Shah Functional by Phase Fields of Bounded Variation

Abstract:
In this paper we introduce a new phase field approximation of the Mumford-Shah functional similar to the well-known one from Ambrosio and Tortorelli. However, in our setting the phase field is allowed to be a function of bounded variation, instead of an $H^1$-function. In the context of image segmentation, we also show how this new approximation can be used for numerical computations, which contai…

In this paper we introduce a new phase field approximation of the Mumford-Shah functional similar to the well-known one from Ambrosio and Tortorelli. However, in our setting the phase field is allowed to be a function of bounded variation, instead of an $H^1$-function. In the context of image segmentation, we also show how this new approximation can be used for numerical computations, which contains a total variation minimization of the phase field variable, as it appears in many problems of image processing. A comparison to the classical Ambrosio-Tortorelli approximation, where the phase field is an $H^1$-function, shows that the new model leads to sharper phase fields.

Abstract:
In this paper we focus on the finite-dimensional approximation of quasi-static evolutions of critical points of the phase-field model of brittle fracture. In a space discretized setting, we first discuss an alternating minimization scheme which, together with the usual time-discretization procedure, allows us to construct such finite-dimensional evolutions. Then, passing to the limit as the space…

Then, passing to the limit as the space discretization becomes finer and finer, we prove that any limit of a sequence of finite-dimensional evolutions is itself a quasi-static evolution of the phase-field model of fracture. In particular, our proof shows for the first time the consistency of numerical schemes related to the study of fracture mechanics and image processing.

Starting from Cs2CuCl4 and Cs2CuBr4 our project focuses on the growth of the Cs2CuCl4-xBrx mixed crystals from aqueous solution and the investigation of the occurring structural variations. The well known orthorhombic structure (space group Pnma) of the end members of this system is interrupted within the intermediate composition range Cs2CuCl3Br1 - Cs2CuCl2Br2, if the growth takes place at room temperature. Within this range a new tetragonal phase is found (space group I4/mmm). However, in case the growth temperature will be increased to 50 °C, the existence of the orthorhombic structure can be extended over the whole Cs2CuCl4-xBrx mixed system. A detailed analysis of the composition dependence of the lattice parameters is used to draw conclusions on the incorporation of Cl- and Br-ions at different sites which is important for the magnetic interactions between the Cu-ions.
