We investigate a field-theoretical model that describes the interaction between kinks and antikinks and between kinks and other heterogeneous fields and impurities. We show that the long-range kink can tunnel through a barrier created by heterogeneous fields and impurities even when the energy of the center of mass of the kink is less than the height of the energy barrier. We also study the conditions under which the kink can pass freely through a disordered medium. We introduce the concept of "effective translational symmetry". We compare our results with those from recent papers published in this journal, where the Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield property is discussed.

In a previous paper [JCAP06, 033 (2018)] we have proved that it is possible to have a stable false vacuum in a potential that is unbounded from below. In this paper we discuss the Physics related to our theoretical and numerical results. We show that the results of recent CERN experiments lead to the fact that our vacuum is safe. We present a new mechanism, where the space-time dimension plays an important role, that explains why our Universe is stable. We provide new evidence that supports a process for the origin of matter-antimatter asymmetry recently introduced by other scientists. We examine confinement in the context of escape problems. We discuss multiverse, string theory landscape, and extra-dimensions using our framework. Finally, we use our solutions to introduce some hypotheses about Dark Matter and Dark Energy.

We investigate a new dynamical system that describes tumor-host interaction. The equation that describes the untreated tumor growth is based on non-extensive statistical mechanics. Recently, this model has been shown to fit successfully exponential, Gompertz, logistic, and power-law tumor growths. We have been able to include as many hallmarks of cancer as possible. We study also the dynamic response of cancer under therapy. Using our model, we can make predictions about the different outcomes when we change the parameters, and/or the initial conditions. We can determine the importance of different factors to influence tumor growth. We discover synergistic therapeutic effects of different treatments and drugs. Cancer is generally untreatable using conventional monotherapy. We consider conventional therapies, oncogene-targeted therapies, tumor-suppressors gene-targeted therapies, immunotherapies, anti-angiogenesis therapies, virotherapy, among others. We need therapies with the potential to target both tumor cells and the tumors' microenvironment. Drugs that target oncogenes and tumor-suppressor genes can be effective in the treatment of some cancers. However, most tumors do reoccur. We have found that the success of the new therapeutic agents can be seen when used in combination with other cancer-cell-killing therapies. Our results have allowed us to design a combinational therapy that can lead to the complete eradication of cancer.

This implementation increases efficiency in stellar modelling where element stratification due to diffusion processes is depth dependent, and thus requires repeated fast opacity reestimates. Three user modes are provided to fit different computing environments, namely a web browser, a local workstation and a distributed grid.

We investigate the dynamics of solitons in generalized Klein-Gordon equations in the presence of nonlinear dam** and spatiotemporal perturbations. We will present different mechanisms for soliton explosions. We show (both analytically and numerically) that some space-dependent perturbations or nonlinear dam** can make the soliton internal mode unstable leading to soliton explosion. We will show that, in some cases, while some conditions are satisfied, the soliton explodes becoming a permanent, extremely complex, spatiotemporal dynamics. We believe these mechanisms can explain some of the phenomena that recently have been reported to occur in excitable media. We present a method for controlling soliton explosions.

On the other hand, this method can be used to suppress spatiotemporal chaos and turbulence in systems where these phenomena are already present. This method can be generalized to even more general spatiotemporal systems.

We prove the existence of internal (shape) modes of sine-Gordon solitons when they are in the presence of inhomogeneous space-dependent external forces, provided some conditions (for these forces) hold. Additional periodic time-dependent forces can sustain oscillations of the soliton width. We show that, in some cases, the internal mode even can become unstable, causing the soliton to decay in an antisoliton and two solitons. In general, in the presence of spatiotemporal forces the soliton behaves as a deformable (non-rigid) object. A soliton moving in an array of inhomogeneities can also present sustained oscillations of its width. There are very important phenomena (like the soliton-antisoliton collisions) where the existence of internal modes plays a crucial role. We show that, under some conditions, the dynamics of the soliton shape modes can be chaotic. A short report of some of our results has been published in [J. A. Gonzalez et al., Phys. Rev. E, 65 (2002) 065601(R)].

We present a Karhunen-Loeve analysis of the soliton structure dynamics as a time-dependent force pumps energy into the traslational mode of the kink. We show the importance of the internal modes of the soliton as they can generate shape chaos for the soliton as well as cases in which the first shape mode leads the dynamics.

We present an analytical and numerical study of the Klein-Gordon kink-soliton dynamics in inhomogeneous media. In particular, we study an external field that is almost constant for the whole system but that changes its sign at the center of coordinates and a localized impurity with finite-width. The soliton solution of the Klein-Gordon-like equations is usually treated as a structureless point-like particle. A richer dynamics is unveiled when the extended character of the soliton is taken into account. We show that interesting spatiotemporal phenomena appear when the structure of the soliton interacts with finite-width inhomogeneities. We solve an inverse problem in order to have external perturbations which are generic and topologically equivalent to well-known bifurcation models and such that the stability problem can be solved exactly. We also show the different quasiperiodic and chaotic motions the soliton undergoes as a time-dependent force pumps energy into the traslational mode of the kink and relate these dynamics with the excitation of the shape modes of the soliton.
