A detailed study is presented of the expected performance of the ATLAS detector. The reconstruction of tracks, leptons, photons, missing energy and jets is investigated, together with the performance of b-tagging and the trigger. The physics potential for a variety of interesting physics processes, within the Standard Model and beyond, is examined. The study comprises a series of notes based on simulations of the detector and physics processes, with particular emphasis given to the data expected from the first years of operation of the LHC at CERN.

On the Behrens--Fisher problem: A globally convergent algorithm and a finite-sample study of the Wald, LR and LM Tests

In this paper we provide a provably convergent algorithm for the multivariate Gaussian Maximum Likelihood version of the Behrens--Fisher Problem. Our work builds upon a formulation of the log-likelihood function proposed by Buot and Richards \citeBR. Instead of focusing on the first order optimality conditions, the algorithm aims directly for the maximization of the log-likelihood function itself to achieve a global solution. Convergence proof and complexity estimates are provided for the algorithm. Computational experiments illustrate the applicability of such methods to high-dimensional data. We also discuss how to extend the proposed methodology to a broader class of problems. We establish a systematic algebraic relation between the Wald, Likelihood Ratio and Lagrangian Multiplier Test ($W\geq \mathit{LR}\geq \mathit{LM}$) in the context of the Behrens--Fisher Problem. Moreover, we use our algorithm to computationally investigate the finite-sample size and power of the Wald, Likelihood Ratio and Lagrange Multiplier Tests, which previously were only available through asymptotic results. The methods developed here are applicable to much higher dimensional settings than the ones available in the literature. This allows us to better capture the role of high dimensionality on the actual size and power of the tests for finite samples.

The ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN is currently waiting to record the first collision data in spring 2009. Its muon spectrometer is designed to achieve a momentum resolution of 10% pT(mu) = 1 TeV/c. The spectrometer consists of a system of three superconducting air-core toroid magnets and is instrumented with three layers of Monitored Drift Tube chambers (Cathode Strip Chambers in the extreme forward region) as precision detectors. Resistive Plate Chambers in the barrel and Thin Gap Chambers in the endcap regions provide a fast trigger system.
The spectrometer passed important milestones in the last year. The most notable milestone was the installation of the inner layer of endcap muon chambers, which constituted the last big piece of the ATLAS detector to be lowered in the ATLAS cavern. In addition, during the last two years most of the muon detectors were commissioned with cosmic rays while being assembled in the underground experimental cavern. We will report on our experience with the precision and trigger chambers, the optical spectrometer alignment system, the level-1 trigger, and the ATLAS data acquisition system. Results of the global performance of the muon system from data with magnetic field will also be presented.

On the Computational Complexity of MCMC-based Estimators in Large Samples

In this paper we examine the implications of the statistical large sample theory for the computational complexity of Bayesian and quasi-Bayesian estimation carried out using Metropolis random walks. Our analysis is motivated by the Laplace-Bernstein-Von Mises central limit theorem, which states that in large samples the posterior or quasi-posterior approaches a normal density. Using the conditions required for the central limit theorem to hold, we establish polynomial bounds on the computational complexity of general Metropolis random walks methods in large samples. Our analysis covers cases where the underlying log-likelihood or extremum criterion function is possibly non-concave, discontinuous, and with increasing parameter dimension. However, the central limit theorem restricts the deviations from continuity and log-concavity of the log-likelihood or extremum criterion function in a very specific manner.
Under minimal assumptions required for the central limit theorem to hold under the increasing parameter dimension, we show that the Metropolis algorithm is theoretically efficient even for the canonical Gaussian walk which is studied in detail. Specifically, we show that the running time of the algorithm in large samples is bounded in probability by a polynomial in the parameter dimension $d$, and, in particular, is of stochastic order $d^2$ in the leading cases after the burn-in period. We then give applications to exponential families, curved exponential families, and Z-estimation of increasing dimension.

We report on a search for pair production of first-generation scalar leptoquarks ($LQ$) in $p \bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=1.96 TeV using an integrated luminosity of 203 $pb^{-1}$ collected at the Fermilab Tevatron collider by the CDF experiment. We observe no evidence for $LQ$ production in the topologies arising from $LQ \bar{LQ} \to eqeq$ and $LQ \bar{LQ} \to eq νq$, and derive 95% C.L. upper limits on the $LQ$ production cross section. %as a function of $β$, where $β$ is the branching fraction for $LQ \to eq$. The results are combined with those obtained from a separately reported CDF search in the topology arising from $LQ\bar{LQ} \to νq νq$ and 95% C.L. lower limits on the LQ mass as a function of $β= BR(LQ \to eq) $ are derived. The limits are 236, 205 and 145 GeV/c$^2$ for $β$ = 1, $β$ = 0.5 and $β$ = 0.1, respectively.

The Online Silicon Vertex Tracker is the new CDF-II level 2 trigger processor designed to reconstruct 2-D tracks within the Silicon Vertex Detector with high speed and accuracy. By performing a precise measurement of impact parameters the SVT allows tagging online B events which typically show displaced secondary vertices. Physics simulations show that this will greatly enhance the CDF-II B-physics capability. The SVT has been fully assembled and operational since the beginning of Tevatron RunII in April 2001. In this paper we briefly review the SVT design and physics motivation and then describe its performance during the early phase (April-October 2001) of run II.
