Geant4: a Game Changer in High Energy Physics and Related Applicative Fields
Abstract: Geant4 is an object-oriented toolkit for the simulation of the passage of particles through matter. Its development was initially motivated by the requirements of physics experiments at high energy hadron colliders under construction in the last decade of the 20th century. Since its release in 1998, it has been exploited in many different applicative fields, including space science, nuclear physic… ▽ More

Geant4 Silver Anniversary: 25 years enabling scientific production
Abstract: This paper summarizes Geant4 contribution to scientific research over the past 25 years through a scientometric analysis of the results with which it has been associated. The scientometric data collected from scholarly literature and databases are evaluated with methods pertaining to econometrics and ecology to quantify relevant traits, diversity and disparity in their scientific and geographic di… ▽ More

Scholarly literature and the press: scientific impact and social perception of physics computing
Abstract: The broad coverage of the search for the Higgs boson in the mainstream media is a relative novelty for high energy physics (HEP) research, whose achievements have traditionally been limited to scholarly literature. This paper illustrates the results of a scientometric analysis of HEP computing in scientific literature, institutional media and the press, and a comparative overview of similar metric… ▽ More

Radioactive Decays in Geant4
Abstract: The simulation of radioactive decays is a common task in Monte-Carlo systems such as Geant4. Usually, a system either uses an approach focusing on the simulations of every individual decay or an approach which simulates a large number of decays with a focus on correct overall statistics. The radioactive decay package presented in this work permits, for the first time, the use of both methods withi… ▽ More

Validation of Geant4-based Radioactive Decay Simulation
Abstract: Radioactive decays are of concern in a wide variety of applications using Monte-Carlo simulations. In order to properly estimate the quality of such simulations, knowledge of the accuracy of the decay simulation is required. We present a validation of the original Geant4 Radioactive Decay Module, which uses a per-decay sampling approach, and of an extended package for Geant4-based simulation of ra… ▽ More

Publication patterns in HEP computing
Abstract: An overview of the evolution of computing-oriented publications in high energy physics following the start of operation of LHC. Quantitative analyses are illustrated, which document the production of scholarly papers on computing-related topics by high energy physics experiments and core tools projects, and the citations they receive. Several scientometric indicators are analyzed to characterize t… ▽ More

The impact of Monte Carlo simulation: a scientometric analysis of scholarly literature
Abstract: A scientometric analysis of Monte Carlo simulation and Monte Carlo codes has been performed over a set of representative scholarly journals related to radiation physics. The results of this study are reported and discussed. They document and quantitatively appraise the role of Monte Carlo methods and codes in scientific research and engineering applications.

The Butterfly Effect: Correlations Between Modeling in Nuclear-Particle Physics and Socioeconomic Factors
Abstract: A scientometric analysis has been performed on selected physics journals to estimate the presence of simulation and modeling in physics literature in the past fifty years. Correlations between the observed trends and several social and economical factors have been evaluated.

Radioactive decay simulation with Geant4: experimental benchmarks and developments for X-ray astronomy applications
Abstract: We present γ spectroscopy validation measurements for the Geant4 radioactive decay simulation for a selected range of isotopes using a simple experimental setup. Using these results we point out problems in the decay simulation and where they may originate from.

Geant4 in Scientific Literature
Abstract: The Geant4 reference paper published in Nuclear Instruments and Methods A in 2003 has become the most cited publication in the whole Nuclear Science and Technology category of Thomson-Reuter's Journal Citation Reports. It is currently the second most cited article among the publications authored by two major research institutes, CERN and INFN. An overview of Geant4 presence (and absence) in scho… ▽ More
