Design of free-space couplers for suspended triangular nano-beam waveguides
Abstract: Photonic waveguides with triangular cross section are being investigated for material systems such as diamond, glasses and gallium nitride, which lack easy options to create conventional rectangular nanophotonic waveguides. The design rules for optical elements in these triangular waveguides, such as couplers and gratings, are not well established. Here we present simulations of elements designed… ▽ More

99% beta factor and directional coupling of quantum dots to fast light in photonic crystal waveguides determined by hyperspectral imaging
Abstract: Spontaneous emission from excitonic transitions in InAs/GaAs quantum dots embedded in photonic crystal waveguides at 5K into non-guided and guided modes is determined by direct hyperspectral imaging. This enables measurement of the absolute coupling efficiency into the guided modes, the beta-factor, directly, without assumptions on decay rates used previously. Notably, we found beta-factors above… ▽ More

Optimised photonic crystal waveguide for chiral light-matter interactions
Abstract: We present slow-light photonic crystal waveguide designs that provide a $\times$8.6 improvement of the local density of optical states at a fully chiral point over previous designs.

Time reversal constraint limits unidirectional photon emission in slow-light photonic crystals
Abstract: Photonic crystal waveguides are known to support C-points - point-like polarisation singularities with local chirality. Such points can couple with dipole-like emitters to produce highly directional emission, from which spin-photon entanglers can be built. Much is made of the promise of using slow-light modes to enhance this light-matter coupling. Here we explore the transition from travelling to… ▽ More

The stability of polarisation singularities in disordered photonic crystal waveguides
Abstract: The effects of short range disorder on the polarisation characteristics of light in photonic crystal waveguides were investigated using finite difference time domain simulations with a view to investigating the stability of polarisation singularities. It was found that points of local circular polarisation (C-points) and contours of linear polarisation (L-lines) continued to appear even in the pre… ▽ More

Polarization engineering in photonic crystal waveguides for spin-photon entanglers
Abstract: By performing a full analysis of the projected local density of states (LDOS) in a photonic crystal waveguide, we show that phase plays a crucial role in the symmetry of the light-matter interaction. By considering a quantum dot (QD) spin coupled to a photonic crystal waveguide (PCW) mode, we demonstrate that the light-matter interaction can be asymmetric, leading to unidirectional emission and a… ▽ More

Ultrafast tuneable optical delay line based on indirect photonic transitions
Abstract: We introduce the concept of an indirect photonic transition and demonstrate its use in a dynamic delay line to alter the group velocity of an optical pulse. Operating on an ultrafast time scale, we show continuously tuneable delays of up to 20 ps, using a slow light photonic crystal waveguide only 300 $μ$m in length. Our approach is flexible, in that individual pulses in a pulse stream can be cont… ▽ More

Ultrafast tilting of the dispersion of a photonic crystal and adiabatic spectral compression of light pulses
Abstract: We demonstrate, by theory and experiment, the ultrafast tilting of the dispersion curve of a photonic-crystal waveguide following the absorption of a femtosecond pump pulse. By sha** the pump-beam cross section with a nanometric shadow mask, different waveguide eigenmodes acquire different spatial overlap with the perturbing pump, leading to a local flattening of the dispersion by up to 11 %. We… ▽ More

Measuring the spatial extent of individual localized photonic states
Abstract: We measure the spatial extent of individual localized photonic states in a slow-light photonic crystal waveguide. The size of the states is measured by perturbing each state individually through a local electromagnetic interaction with a near-field probe. We find localized states which are not observed in transmission and show that these states are shorter than the waveguide. We also directly obta… ▽ More
