The Dry Ten Martini Problem for Sturmian Hamiltonians is affirmatively solved. Concretely, we prove that all spectral gaps are open for Schrödinger operators with Sturmian potentials and non-vanishing coupling constant. A key approach towards the solution is a representation of the spectrum as the boundary of an infinite tree. This tree is constructed via particular periodic approximations and it encodes substantial spectral characteristics.

For dynamically-defined operator families, the Hausdorff distance of the spectra is estimated by the distance of the underlying dynamical systems while the group is amenable. We prove that if the group has strict polynomial growth and both the group action and the coefficients are Lipschitz continuous, then the spectral estimate has a square root behavior or, equivalently, the spectrum map is $ \frac{1}{2} $-Hölder continuous. We prove the behavior can be improved resulting in the spectrum map being Lipschitz continuous if the coefficients are locally-constant. In 1990, the square root behavior was established for the Almost Mathieu Operator or, more generally, the quasiperiodic operators with Lipschitz continuous potentials. Our results extend the square root behavior to a bigger class of operators such as (magnetic) discrete Schrödinger operators with finite range and with Lipschitz continuous coefficients.

Symbolic substitution systems are an important source of aperiodic Delone sets in abelian locally compact groups. In this article, we consider a large class of non-abelian nilpotent Lie groups with dilation structures, which we refer to as rationally homogeneous Lie groups with rational spectrum (RAHOGRASPs). We show, by explicit construction, that every RAHOGRASP admits a lattice with a primitive symbolic substitution system and hence contains a weakly aperiodic linearly repetitive Delone set. These are the first examples of weakly aperiodic linearly repetitive Delone sets in non-abelian Lie groups. Building on our previous work, we establish unique ergodicity of the corresponding Delone dynamical systems. Our construction applies in particular to all two-step nilpotent Lie groups defined over $\mathbb Q$ such as the Heisenberg group. In this case, the Delone sets in question are in fact strongly aperiodic, i.e. the underlying action of the corresponding Delone dynamical system is free.

This concept, which was introduced previously for operators on $\mathbb{N}$ and $\mathbb{Z}^d$ as "right-limits", captures the behaviour of the operator at infinity. For graphs with sub-exponential growth rate we show that each point in $σ_{\text ess}(H)$ corresponds to a bounded generalized eigenfunction of a corresponding $\mathcal{R}$-limit of $H$. If, additionally, the graph is of uniform sub-exponential growth, also the converse inclusion holds.

Roughly speaking, two configurations are "close to each other" if, up to a translation, they "almost coincide" on a large fixed ball. The larger this ball is, the more similar they are, and this induces a metric on the space of the corresponding dynamical systems. Our main result states that the map which sends a given configuration into the spectrum of its associated Hamiltonian, is Hölder (even Lipschitz) continuous in the usual Hausdorff metric. Specifically, the spectral distance of two Hamiltonians is estimated by the distance of the corresponding dynamical systems.

The existence and construction of periodic approximations with convergent spectra is crucial in solid state physics for the spectral study of corresponding Schrödinger operators. In a forthcoming work [9] (arXiv:1709.00975) this task was boiled down to the existence and construction of periodic approximations of the underlying dynamical systems in the Hausdorff topology. As a result the one-dimensional systems admitting such approximations are completely classified in the present work. In addition explicit constructions are provided for dynamical systems defined by primitive substitutions covering all studied examples such as the Fibonacci sequence or the Golay-Rudin-Shapiro sequence. One main tool is the description of the Hausdorff topology by the local pattern topology on the dictionaries as well as the GAP-graphs describing the local structure. The connection of branching vertices in the GAP-graphs and defects is discussed.

A special focus is both on the autocorrelation, as well as on the density of states for random bounded operators. It is shown that for uniquely ergodic limit systems, the latter measures behave continuously with respect to the Chabauty-Fell convergence of hulls. In the special situation of Euclidean spaces, our results complement recent developments in describing spectra as topological limits: we show that the measured quantities under consideration can be approximated via periodic analogs.

How does the spectrum of a Schrödinger operator vary if the corresponding geometry and dynamics change? Is it possible to define approximations of the spectrum of such operators by defining approximations of the underlying structures? In this work a positive answer is provided using the rather general setting of groupoid $C^\ast$-algebras. A characterization of the convergence of the spectra by the convergence of the underlying structures is proved. In order to do so, the concept of continuous field of groupoids is slightly extended by adding continuous fields of cocycles. With this at hand, magnetic Schrödinger operators on dynamical systems or Delone systems fall into this unified setting. Various approximations used in computational physics, like the periodic or the finite cluster approximations, are expressed through the tautological groupoid, which provides a universal model for fields of groupoids. The use of the Hausdorff topology turns out to be fundamental in understanding why and how these approximations work.
Corrigendum: A correct statement of Theorem 4 is provided. The change does not affect the main results.

Suppose that the operator $H+W$ is critical in $Ω$, and let $\varphi$ be the corresponding Agmon ground state. We prove that if $u$ is a generalized eigenfunction of $H$ satisfying $|u|\leq \varphi$ in $Ω$, then the corresponding eigenvalue is in the spectrum of $H$. The conclusion also holds true if for some $K\Subset Ω$ the operator $H$ admits a positive solution in $\tildeΩ=Ω\setminus K$, and $|u|\leq ψ$ in $\tildeΩ$, where $ψ$ is a positive solution of minimal growth in a neighborhood of infinity in $Ω$.
Under natural assumptions, this result holds true also in the context of infinite graphs, and Dirichlet forms.

We study the (Hölder-)continuous behavior of the spectra belonging to a family of linear bounded operators $(A_t)_{t\in T}$ indexed by a topological space $T$. For the cases of self-adjoint, unitary and normal operators, a characterization of the continuity of $Σ:T\to \mathcal{K}(\mathbb{R}), t\mapsto σ(A_t),$ is proven while the distance of the spectra is measured by the Hausorff metric. If $T$ is a metric space, the Hölder-continuous behavior of $Σ$ is characterized for self-adjoint and unitary operators. Here we observe interesting effects, namely the rate of convergence is bisect whenever spectral gaps closes.
Based on this, we provide a tool to prove the continuity of the spectra for large classes of operators. In particular, we apply this theory to generalized Schrödinger operators and show that the continuity of the spectra is characterized by the continuous variation of the underlying dynamical systems.
Finally, we analyze the existence of periodic dynamical systems approximating a given dynamical system. This leads to periodic approximations of the corresponding Schrödinger operators by the previously developed theory. We prove that local symmetries of the patterns and the presence of a substitution is a sufficient criteria for periodic approximations of subshifts in $\mathbb{Z}^d$. For $d=1$, a characterization is proven for the existence of periodic approximations. For these approaches, the notion of a dictionary is further developed and defined independently of a given configuration. We prove that the set of dictionaries equipped with the local pattern topology is homeomorphic to the space of subshifts. This yields a useful tool to analyze these systems. Furthermore, it delivers the connection of the existence of periodic orbits in a subshift of finite type and the existence of periodic approximations for subshifts.
