Abstract:
We have monitored the angularly resolved near infrared and 3.1 micron ice-band flux of the components of the young binary Haro 6-10 on 23 occasions during the years 1988 to 2000. Our observations reveal that both the visible star Haro 6-10 (Haro 6-10S) and its infrared companion (Haro 6-10N) show significant variation in flux on time scales as short as a month. The substantial flux decrease of Haro 6-10S over the last four years carries the reddening signature of increased extinction. However, a comparable K-band flux increase observed in the IRC is associated with a dimming in the H-band and cannot be explained by lower extinction. Absorption in the 3.1 micron water-ice feature was always greater towards the IRC during our observations, indicating a larger amount of obscuring material along its line of sight. We detect variability in the ice-band absorption towards Haro 6-10S and Haro 6-10N, significant at the 3.5 sigma and 2.0 sigma levels, respectively.

Abstract:
We present angularly resolved spectra of T Tau North and South in the 3 micron water ice feature and K-band. Most of the water ice absorption lies along the line of sight toward T Tau South, confirming that it is viewed through stronger extinction. We present angularly resolved spectra of T Tau North and South in the 3 micron water ice feature and K-band. Most of the water ice absorption lies along the line of sight toward T Tau South, confirming that it is viewed through stronger extinction. A decrease in ice-band absorption toward T Tau S between December 1998 and January 2000, significant at the 2 sigma level, was associated with an increase in its near infrared flux. Br gamma emission is detected in T Tau North and South and H_{2} (2.12 micron) emission only toward T Tau South, consistent with previous studies of infrared companions to T Tauri stars. Our results suggest that the near IR variability of T Tau S is probably caused by both variations in accretion rate and variable extinction along the line of sight.

This review discusses progress in efficient solvers which have as their foundation a representation in real space, either through finite-difference or finite-element formulations. The relationship of real-space approaches to linear-scaling electrostatics and electronic structure methods is first discussed. Then the basic aspects of real-space representations are presented. Multigrid techniques for solving the discretized problems are covered; these numerical schemes allow for highly efficient solution of the grid-based equations. Applications to problems in electrostatics are discussed, in particular numerical solutions of Poisson and Poisson-Boltzmann equations. Next, methods for solving self-consistent eigenvalue problems in real space are presented; these techniques have been extensively applied to solutions of the Hartree-Fock and Kohn-Sham equations of electronic structure, and to eigenvalue problems arising in semiconductor and polymer physics. Finally, real-space methods have found recent application in computations of optical response and excited states in time-dependent density functional theory, and these computational developments are summarized. Multiscale solvers are competitive with the most efficient available plane-wave techniques in terms of the number of self-consistency steps required to reach the ground state, and they require less work in each self-consistency update on a uniform grid. Besides excellent efficiencies, the decided advantages of the real-space multiscale approach are 1) the near-locality of each function update, 2) the ability to handle global eigenfunction constraints and potential updates on coarse levels, and 3) the ability to incorporate adaptive local mesh refinements without loss of optimal multigrid efficiencies.

We present a multigrid algorithm for self consistent solution of the Kohn-Sham equations in real space. The entire problem is discretized on a real space mesh with a high order finite difference representation. The resulting self consistent equations are solved on a heirarchy of grids of increasing resolution with a nonlinear Full Approximation Scheme, Full Multigrid algorithm. The self consistency is effected by updates of the Poisson equation and the exchange correlation potential at the end of each eigenfunction correction cycle. The algorithm leads to highly efficient solution of the equations, whereby the ground state electron distribution is obtained in only two or three self consistency iterations on the finest scale.

A method for performing high order mesh refinement multigrid computations is presented. The Full Approximation Scheme (FAS) multigrid technique is utilized for a sequence of nested patches of increasing resolution. Conservation forms are generated on coarse scales by additional defect correction terms which counter the local excess fluxes at the boundaries. Formulas are given for arbitrary order, extending the existing technique of Bai and Brandt. Test calculations are presented for a singular source in three dimensions which illustrate the multigrid convergence properties, numerical accuracy, and correct order of the approach. Applications for all electron quantum chemical computations are discussed.

An echelle spectrogram (R = 30,000) of the 2300-3100 A region in the ultraviolet spectrum of the F8V star 9 Comae is presented. The observation is used to calibrate features in the mid-ultraviolet spectra of similar stars according to age and metal content. In particular, the spectral break at 2640 A is interpreted using the spectral synthesis code SYNSPEC. We use this feature to estimate the time since the last major star formation episode in the z=1.55 early-type galaxy LBDS 53W091, whose rest frame mid-ultraviolet spectrum, observed with the Keck Telescope, is dominated by the flux from similar stars that are at or near the main-sequence turnoff in that system (Spinrad et al. 1997). Our result, 1 Gyr if the flux-dominating stellar population has a metallicity twice solar, or 2 Gyr for a more plausible solar metallicity, is significantly lower than the previous estimate and thereby relaxes constraints on cosmological parameters that were implied by the earlier work.

We have identified 7 narrow components of C I and have measured their relative populations in excited fine-structure levels. Broader features at heliocentric velocities ranging from -70 to +130 km/s are seen in C II, N I, O I, Si II, S II and Ni II. In the high-velocity components, the unusually low abundances of N I and O I, relative to S II and Si II, suggest that these elements may be preferentially ionized to higher stages by radiation from hot gas immediately behind the shock fronts.
