The giant graviton expansion of the line defect Schur index in four dimensional $\mathcal N=4$ $U(N)$ SYM was recently proposed in arXiv:2403.11543 to be captured in the dual string theory by counting fluctuations states of two half-infinite fundamental strings in $AdS_{5}\times S^{5}$ ending on the line defect and D3 brane giant. However, agreement with the gauge theory data for the defect line index at finite $N$ required the inclusion of ad hoc extra contributions with unclear origin. We discuss the large $N$ leading order contribution of the giant graviton expansion of the defect line index by a direct analysis of semiclassical string partition function in a twisted background. We discuss supersymmetric boundary conditions in the presence of the D3 brane and evaluate the quadratic fluctuations effective action by introducing a suitable projection of fluctuation modes. We show that the extra contributions to the single giant graviton correction found in arXiv:2403.11543 correspond to a supersymmetric Casimir energy contribution.

We consider 4d $\mathcal N=4$ $U(N)$ SYM and the leading giant graviton correction to the Schur defect 2-point functions of $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS Wilson lines in rank-$k$ symmetric and antisymmetric representations. We study in particular the large $k$ limit for the symmetric case and the regime $1\ll k \ll N$ in the antisymmetric one. We present exact results for the correction in agreement with matrix model evaluation at finite $N,k$. The Wilson lines in symmetric/antisymmetric representations admit a description in terms of D3$_{k}$ and D5$_{k}$ brane probes representing a collection of $k$ fundamental strings. In this picture, giant graviton corrections come from fluctuations of brane probes in presence of a wrapped D3 brane giant graviton. In particular, for the antisymmetric case, our leading correction matches the half-index of the 3d $\mathcal N=4$ Maxwell theory living on the 3d disk which is a part of the giant graviton divided out by the D5$_{k}$ probe, as recently proposed in arXiv:2404.08302. For the symmetric case at large $k$, we derive an explicit exact residue formula for the leading correction.

We consider Schur line defect correlators in four dimensional $\mathcal N=4$ $U(N)$ SYM and their giant graviton expansion encoding finite $N$ corrections to the large $N$ limit. We compute in closed form the single giant graviton contribution to correlators with general insertions of $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS charged Wilson lines. For the 2-point function with fundamental and anti-fundamental Wilson lines, we match the result from fluctuations of two half-infinite strings ending on the giant graviton, recently proposed in arXiv:2403.11543. In particular, we prove exact factorization of the defect contribution with respect to wrapped D3 brane fluctuations representing the single giant graviton correction to the undecorated Schur index. This follows from a finite-difference representation of the Schur line defect index in terms of the index without defects, and similar factorization holds quite generally for more complicated defect configurations. In particular, the single giant graviton contribution to the 4-point function with two fundamental and two anti-fundamental lines is computed and discussed in this perspective.

The flavored superconformal Schur index of $\mathcal N=4$ $U(N)$ SYM has finite $N$ corrections encoded in its giant graviton expansion in terms of D3 branes wrapped in $AdS_{5}\times S^{5}$. The key element of this decomposition is the non-trivial index of the theory living on the wrapped brane system. A remarkable feature of the Schur limit is that the brane index is an analytic continuation of the flavored index of $\mathcal N=4$ $U(n)$ SYM, where $n$ is the total brane wrap** number. We exploit recent exact results about the Schur index of $\mathcal N=4$ $U(N)$ SYM to evaluate the closed form of the the brane indices appearing in the giant graviton expansion. Away from the unflavored limit, they are characterized by quasimodular forms providing exact information at all orders in the index universal fugacity. As an application of these results, we present novel exact expressions for the giant graviton expansion of the unflavored Schur index in a class of four dimensional $\mathcal N=2$ theories with equal central charges $a=c$, i.e. the non-Lagrangian theories $\widehatΓ(SU(N))$ with $Γ= E_{6}, E_{7}, E_{8}$.

We consider the refined Schur superconformal index of 4d $\mathcal N=4$ $U(N)$ SYM and the first term of its giant-graviton expansion, first predicted in arXiv:2001.11667 using indirect superconformal algebra considerations and analytic continuation of fugacities. Our calculation does not exploit directly supersymmetry. It is based on the determination of the partition function of the various bosonic and fermionic fluctuations on the wrapped brane whose action is conformal with specific constant holonomies along thermal cycle. We show how those partition functions may be obtained by adapting the operator counting method of Cardy to the twisted background.

We use localization to compute nonplanar corrections to the free energy and the circular half-BPS Wilson loop in these theories for an arbitrary number of nodes, and examine their behaviour in the limit of long quivers. Exploiting the relationship between the localization quiver matrix integrals and an integrable Bessel operator, we find a closed-form expression for the leading nonplanar correction to both observables in the limit when the number of nodes and 't Hooft coupling become large. We demonstrate that it has different asymptotic behaviour depending on how the two parameters are compared, and interpret this behaviour in terms of properties of a lattice model defined on the quiver diagram.

Here we demonstrate an analogous relation for the leading non-perturbative contribution to the large $N$ expansion of the superconformal index of the ${n}=8$ supersymmetric level-one $U(N) \times U(N)$ ABJM theory (which describes low-energy dynamics of $N$ coincident M2 branes). The roles of M2 and M5 branes get effectively interchanged. Namely, the large $N$ correction to the ABJM index is found to be given by the semiclassical partition function of quantum M5 brane wrapped on $S^1 \times S^5$ in a twisted version of AdS$_{4}\times S^{7}$ background. This effectively confirms the suggestion for the "M5 brane index" made in arXiv:2007.05213 on the basis of indirect superconformal algebra considerations.

Generalizing the type IIA string theory limit of this relation discussed in arXiv:2111.15493 and arXiv:2304.12340, we consider semiclassically quantized M2 branes in a half-supersymmetric 11d background which is a twisted product of thermal AdS$_7$ and $S^4$. We show that the leading non-perturbative term at large $N$ is reproduced precisely by the 1-loop partition function of an "instanton" M2 brane wrapped on $S^1\times S^2$ with $S^2\subset S^4$. Similarly, the (2,0) theory analog of the BPS Wilson loop expectation value is reproduced by the partition function of a "defect" M2 brane wrapped on thermal AdS$_3\subset$ AdS$_7$. We comment on a curious analogy of these results with similar computations in arXiv:2303.15207 and arXiv:2307.14112 of the partition function of quantum M2 branes in AdS$_4 \times S^7/\mathbb Z_k$ which reproduced the corresponding localization expressions in the ABJM 3d gauge theory.

We show that the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of large supersymmetric black holes in AdS$_5\times S^5$ emerges from remarkable cancellations in the giant graviton expansions recently proposed by Imamura, and Gaiotto and Lee, independently. A similar cancellation mechanism is shown to happen in the exact expansion in terms of free fermions recently put-forward by Murthy. These two representations can be understood as sums over independent systems of giant D3-branes and free fermions, respectively. At large charges, the free energy of each independent system localizes to its asymptotic expansion near the leading singularity. The sum over the independent systems maps their localized free energy to the localized free energy of the superconformal index of $U(N)$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM. This result constitutes a non-perturbative test of the giant graviton expansion valid at any value of $N$. Moreover, in the holographic scaling limit $N\to\infty$ at fixed ratio $\frac{\text{Entropy}}{N^2}\,$, it recovers the 1/16 BPS black hole entropy by a saddle-point approximation of the giant graviton expansion.

We present a quantum M2 brane computation of the instanton prefactor in the leading non-perturbative contribution to the ABJM 3-sphere free energy at large $N$ and fixed level $k$. Using supersymmetric localization, such instanton contribution was found earlier to take the form $F^{\rm inst}(N,k) = - ({\sin^{2} \frac{2π}{k}} )^{-1} \, \exp (-2π\sqrt\frac{2N}{k}) + \cdots$ . The exponent comes from the action of an M2 brane instanton wrapped on $S^3/{\mathbb Z}_k$, which represents the M-theory uplift of the $\mathbb{C}P^1$ instanton in type IIA string theory on AdS$_4 \times \mathbb{C}P^3$. The IIA string computation of the leading large $k$ term in the instanton prefactor was recently performed in arXiv:2304.12340. Here we find that the exact value of the prefactor $({\sin^{2} \frac{2π}{k}})^{-1} $ is reproduced by the 1-loop term in the M2 brane partition function expanded near the $S^3/\mathbb{Z}_k$ instanton configuration. As in the Wilson loop example in arXiv:2303.15207, the quantum M2 brane computation is well defined and produces a finite result in exact agreement with localization.

We show that the general form of the perturbative expansions of $F$ on the two sides of the AdS/CFT duality is indeed the same. Moreover, the transcendentality properties of the coefficients in the large $N$, large $k$ expansion of $F$ match those in the corresponding M-theory or string theory expansions. To shed light on the structure of the 1-loop M-theory partition function on AdS$_{4}\times S^{7}/\mathbb{Z}_{k}$ we use the expression for the 1-loop 4-graviton scattering amplitude in the 11d supergravity. We also use the known information about the transcendental coefficients of the leading curvature invariants in the low-energy effective action of type II string theory. Matching of the remaining rational factors in the coefficients requires a precise information about currently unknown RR field strength terms in the corresponding superinvariants.

We study the role of Quorum Sensing (QS) in the growth of bacterial colonies and in the bioluminescence produced. These two phenomena are both regulated by QS and the experimental data show a non-trivial correlation between them. It is also known that the specific bacterial substrate potentially modifies the behavior of the colony. In the specific case of the bioluminescent gram-negative bacterium, Vibrio harveyi, we propose a three-autoinducer model in which QS is described in terms of long-range interaction between charged objects placed on a regular network and playing the role of bacteria. The charges spread in the network through fictitious non-linear electrostatic interactions. QS is monitored by analyzing the current flowing within the network. The model parameters are determined by comparing the simulations with the data present in the literature and related to liquid cultures. New colony growth measurements are then performed on Vibrio campbelli (a member of the clade Harveyi) grown on hydroxyapatite (HA) substrates relevant for biomedical applications. Growth on the substrate differs from growth in liquid culture, although the observed bioluminescence is similar. We exploit our model to understand the differences between colonies in liquid culture and on substrate in terms of the relative role and cooperation of the three autoinducers.

We focus on two observables in these theories that admit representation in terms of localization matrix model: free energy on 4-sphere and the expectation value of half-BPS circular Wilson loop. We extend the methods developed in arXiv:2207.11475 to derive a systematical expansion of non-planar corrections to these observables at strong 't Hooft coupling constant $λ$. We show that the leading non planar corrections are given by a power series in $λ^{3/2}/N^2$ with rational coefficients. Sending $N$ and the coupling constant $λ$ to infinity with $λ^{3/2}/N^2$ kept fixed corresponds to the familiar double scaling limit in matrix models. We find that in this limit the observables in the two models are related in a remarkably simple way: the free energies differ by the factor of $2$, whereas the Wilson loop expectation values coincide. Surprisingly, these relations hold only at strong coupling, they are not valid in the weak coupling regime. We also discuss a dual string theory interpretation of the leading corrections to the free energy in the double scaling limit suggesting their relation to curvature corrections in type IIB string effective action.

Localization captures several observables in this dCFT, including its free energy, related to the defect expectation value, and single trace $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS composite scalars. These quantities may be computed in a hermitian one-matrix model with non-polynomial single-trace potential. We exploit the integrable Volterra hierarchy underlying the matrix model and systematically study its $1/N$ expansion at any value of the 't Hooft coupling. In particular, the strong coupling regime is determined -- up to non-perturbative exponentially suppressed corrections -- by differential relations that constrain higher order terms in the $1/N$ expansion. The analysis is extended to the model with $SU(N)$ gauge symmetry by resorting to the more general Toda lattice equations.

This theory is unique among similar $\cal N$=2 superconformal models that are planar-equivalent to $\cal N$=4 SYM in that the corresponding localization matrix model has the interaction potential containing single-trace terms only. We exploit this property to show that, to any order in large $N$ expansion and an arbitrary 't Hooft coupling $λ$, the free energy and the Wilson loop satisfy Toda lattice equations. Solving these equations at strong coupling, we find remarkably simple expressions for these observables which include all corrections in $1/N$ and $1/\sqrtλ$. We also compute the leading exponentially suppressed ${\cal O}(e^{-\sqrtλ})$ corrections and consider a generalization to the case when the fundamental hypermultiplets have a non-zero mass. The string theory dual of this $\cal N$=2 gauge theory should be a particular orientifold of AdS$_5 \times S^5$ type IIB string and we discuss the string theory interpretation of the obtained strong-coupling results.

We consider strong 't Hooft coupling expansion in special four-dimensional $\mathcal N=2$ superconformal models that are planar-equivalent to $\mathcal N=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. Various observables in these models that admit localization matrix model representation can be expressed at large $N$ in terms of a Fredholm determinant of a Bessel operator. The latter previously appeared in the study of level spacing distributions in matrix models and, more recently, in four-point correlation functions of infinitely heavy half-BPS operators in planar $\mathcal N=4$ SYM. We use this relation and a suitably generalized Szego-Akhiezer-Kac formula to derive the strong 't Hooft coupling expansion of the leading corrections to free energy, half-BPS circular Wilson loop, and certain correlators of chiral primaries operators in the $\mathcal N=2$ models. This substantially generalizes partial results in the literature and represents a challenge for dual string theory calculations in AdS/CFT context. We also demonstrate that the resulting strong-coupling expansions suffer from Borel singularities and require adding non-perturbative, exponentially suppressed corrections. As a byproduct of our analysis, we determine the non-perturbative correction to the above mentioned four-point correlator in planar $\mathcal N=4$ SYM.

The generalized Wilson loop operator interpolating between the supersymmetric and the ordinary Wilson loop in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM theory provides an interesting example of renormalization group flow on a line defect: the scalar coupling parameter $ζ$ has a non-trivial beta function and may be viewed as a running coupling constant in a 1d defect QFT. In this paper we continue the study of this operator, generalizing previous results for the beta function and Wilson loop expectation value to the case of an arbitrary representation of the gauge group and beyond the planar limit. Focusing on the scalar ladder limit where the generalized Wilson loop reduces to a purely scalar line operator in a free adjoint theory, and specializing to the case of the rank $k$ symmetric representation of $SU(N)$, we also consider a certain semiclassical limit where $k$ is taken to infinity with the product $k\, ζ^2$ fixed. This limit can be conveniently studied using a 1d defect QFT representation in terms of $N$ commuting bosons. Using this representation, we compute the beta function and the circular loop expectation value in the large $k$ limit, and use it to derive constraints on the structure of the beta function for general representation. We discuss the corresponding 1d RG flow and comment on the consistency of the results with the 1d defect version of the F-theorem.

Extending earlier work, we find the two-loop term in the beta-function for the scalar coupling $ζ$ in a generalized Wilson loop operator of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory, working in the planar weak-coupling expansion. The beta-function for $ζ$ has fixed points at $ζ=\pm 1$ and $ζ=0$, corresponding respectively to the supersymmetric Wilson-Maldacena loop and to the standard Wilson loop without scalar coupling. As a consequence of our result for the beta-function, we obtain a prediction for the two-loop term in the anomalous dimension of the scalar field inserted on the standard Wilson loop. We also find a subset of higher-loop contributions (with highest powers of $ζ$ at each order in `t Hooft coupling) coming from the scalar ladder graphs determining the corresponding terms in the five-loop beta-function. We discuss the related structure of the circular Wilson loop expectation value commenting, in particular, on consistency with a 1d defect version of the F-theorem. We also compute (to two loops in the planar ladder approximation) the two-point correlators of scalars inserted on the Wilson line.

This conformal theory admits a large-$N$ 't Hooft expansion and is dual to a particular orientifold of $AdS_{5}\times S^{5}$. We analyze this gauge theory relying on the matrix model provided by localization a la Pestun. Even though this matrix model has very non-trivial interactions, by exploiting the full Lie algebra approach to the matrix integration, we show that a large class of observables can be expressed in a closed form in terms of an infinite matrix depending on the 't Hooft coupling $λ$. These exact expressions can be used to generate the perturbative expansions at high orders in a very efficient way, and also to study analytically the leading behavior at strong coupling. We successfully compare these predictions to a direct Monte Carlo numerical evaluation of the matrix integral and to the Padé resummations derived from very long perturbative series, that turn out to be extremely stable beyond the convergence disk $|λ|<π^2$ of the latter.

They contain $N$-independent numbers of hypermultiplets in rank 2 antisymmetric and fundamental representations and are planar-equivalent to the corresponding $\mathcal N=4$ SYM theories. These $\mathcal N=2$ theories can be realised on a system of $N$ D3-branes with a finite number of D7-branes and O7-plane; the dual string theories should be particular orientifolds of $AdS_5\times S^5$ superstring. Starting with the localization matrix model representation for the $\mathcal N=2$ partition function on $S^4$ we find exact differential relations between the $1/N$ terms in the corresponding free energy $F$ and the $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS Wilson loop expectation value $\langle\mathcal W\rangle$ and also compute their large 't Hooft coupling ($λ\gg 1$) expansions. The structure of these expansions is different from the previously studied models without fundamental hypermultiplets. In the more tractable $Sp(2N)$ case we find an exact resummed expression for the leading strong coupling terms at each order in the $1/N$ expansion. We also determine the exponentially suppressed at large $λ$ contributions to the non-planar corrections to $F$ and $\langle\mathcal W\rangle$ and comment on their resurgence properties. We discuss dual string theory interpretation of these strong coupling expansions.

We consider $U(N)$ $\mathcal N=4$ super Yang-Mills theory and discuss how to extract the strong coupling limit of non-planar corrections to observables involving the $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS Wilson loop. Our approach is based on a suitable saddle point treatment of the Eynard-Orantin topological recursion in the Gaussian matrix model. Working directly at strong coupling we avoid the usual procedure of first computing observables at finite planar coupling $λ$, order by order in $1/N$, and then taking the $λ\gg 1$ limit. In the proposed approach, matrix model multi-point resolvents take a simplified form and some structures of the genus expansion, hardly visible at low order, may be identified and rigorously proved. As a sample application, we consider the expectation value of multiple coincident circular supersymmetric Wilson loops as well as their correlator with single trace chiral operators. For these quantities we provide novel results about the structure of their genus expansion at large tension, generalising recent results in arXiv:2011.02885.

Localization approach to $\mathcal N=2$ superconformal $SU(N) \times SU(N)$ quiver theory leads to a non-Gaussian two-matrix model representation for the expectation value of BPS circular $SU(N)$ Wilson loop $\langle\mathcal W\rangle$. We study the subleading $1/N^2$ term in the large $N$ expansion of $\langle\mathcal W\rangle$ at weak and strong coupling. We concentrate on the case of the symmetric quiver with equal gauge couplings which is equivalent to the $\mathbb Z_{2}$ orbifold of the $SU(2N)$ $\mathcal N=4$ SYM theory. This orbifold gauge theory should be dual to type IIB superstring in ${\rm AdS}_5\times (S^{5}/\mathbb Z_{2})$. We present a string theory argument suggesting that the $1/N^2$ term in $\langle\mathcal W\rangle$ in the orbifold theory should have the same strong-coupling asymptotics $ λ^{3/2}$ as in the $\mathcal N=4$ SYM case. We support this prediction by a numerical study of the localization matrix model on the gauge theory side. We also find a relation between the $1/N^2$ term in the Wilson loop expectation value and the derivative of the free energy of the orbifold gauge theory on 4-sphere.

Starting with some known localization (matrix model) representations for correlators involving 1/2 BPS circular Wilson loop $\cal W$ in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM theory we work out their $1/N$ expansions in the limit of large 't Hooft coupling $λ$. Motivated by a possibility of eventual matching to higher genus corrections in dual string theory we follow ar** only the leading in $1/T$ term at each order in $g_{\rm s} $ we observe that while the expansion of $\langle {\cal W} \rangle$ is a series in $g^2_{\rm s} /T$, the correlator of the Wilson loop with chiral primary operators ${\cal O}_J $ has expansion in powers of $g^2_{\rm s}/T^2$. Like in the case of $\langle {\cal W} \rangle$ where these leading terms are known to resum into an exponential of a "one-handle" contribution $\sim g^2_{\rm s} /T$, the leading strong coupling terms in $\langle {\cal W}\, {\cal O}_J \rangle$ sum up to a simple square root function of $g^2_{\rm s}/T^2$. Analogous expansions in powers of $g^2_{\rm s}/T$ are found for correlators of several coincident Wilson loops and they again have a simple resummed form. We also find similar expansions for correlators of coincident 1/2 BPS Wilson loops in the ABJM theory.

We review and improve known techniques for studying the matrix model in the large-N limit, deriving explicit expressions in perturbation theory for these observables. We exploit both recursive methods in the so-called full Lie algebra approach and the more standard Cartan sub-algebra approach based on the eigenvalue distribution. The sub-class of conformal theories for which the number of fundamental hypermultiplets does not scale with N differs in the planar limit from the N=4 SYM theory only in observables involving chiral operators of odd dimension. In this case we are able to derive compact expressions which allow to push the small 't Hooft coupling expansion to very high orders. We argue that the perturbative series have a finite radius of convergence and extrapolate them numerically to intermediate couplings. This is preliminary to an analytic investigation of the strong coupling behavior, which would be very interesting given that for such theories holographic duals have been proposed.

For example, the correlators of the Liouville scalar happen to be the same as the correlators of the chiral component of the stress tensor on a plane restricted to the real line. Here we show that an analogous relation is true also in the WZW model: boundary correlators of the WZW scalars have the same structure as the correlators of chiral Kač-Moody currents. This is checked at the level of the tree and one-loop Witten diagrams in AdS$_2$. We also compute some tree-level correlators in a generic $σ$-model defined on AdS$_2$ and show that they simplify only in the WZW case where an extra Kač-Moody symmetry appears. In particular, the terms in 4-point correlators having logarithmic dependence on 1d cross-ratio cancel only at the WZW point. One motivation behind this work is to learn how to compute AdS$_2$ loop corrections in 2d models with derivative interactions related to the study of correlators of operators on Wilson loops in string theory in AdS.

Conformal theories with a global symmetry may be studied in the double scaling regime where the interaction strength is reduced while the global charge increases. Here, we study generic 4d $\mathcal N=2$ $SU(N)$ gauge theories with conformal matter content at large R-charge $Q_{\rm R}\to \infty$ with fixed 't Hooft-like coupling $κ= Q_{\rm R}\,g_{\rm YM}^{2}$. Our analysis concerns two distinct classes of natural scaling functions. The first is built in terms of chiral/anti-chiral two-point functions. The second involves one-point functions of chiral operators in presence of $\frac{1}{2}$-BPS Wilson-Maldacena loops. In the rank-1 $SU(2)$ case, the two-point sector has been recently shown to be captured by an auxiliary chiral random matrix model. We extend the analysis to $SU(N)$ theories and provide an algorithm that computes arbitrarily long perturbative expansions for all considered models, parametric in the rank. The leading and next-to-leading contributions are cross-checked by a three-loops computation in $\mathcal N=1$ superspace. This perturbative analysis identifies maximally non-planar Feynman diagrams as the relevant ones in the double scaling limit. In the Wilson-Maldacena sector, we obtain closed expressions for the scaling functions, valid for any rank and $κ$. As an application, we analyze quantitatively the large 't Hooft coupling limit $κ\gg 1$ where we identify all perturbative and non-perturbative contributions. The latter are associated with heavy electric BPS states and the precise correspondence with their mass spectrum is clarified.

The examples considered were: (i) the Liouville theory where the operator dual to the Liouville scalar in AdS$_2$ is the stress tensor; (ii) the abelian Toda theory where the operators dual to the Toda scalars are the $\mathcal W$-algebra generators; (iii) the non-abelian Toda theory where the Liouville field is dual to the stress tensor while the extra gauged WZW theory scalars are dual to non-abelian parafermionic operators. By direct Witten diagram computations in AdS$_2$ one can check that the structure of the boundary correlators is indeed consistent with the Virasoro (or higher) symmetry. Here we consider a supersymmetric generalization: the $\mathcal N=1$ superconformal Liouville theory in AdS$_2$. We start with the super Liouville theory coupled to 2d supergravity and show that a consistent restriction to rigid AdS$_2$ background requires a non-zero value of the supergravity auxiliary field and thus a modification of the Liouville potential from its familiar flat-space form. We show that the Liouville scalar and its fermionic partner are dual to the chiral half of the stress tensor and the supercurrent of the super Liouville theory on the plane. We perform tests supporting the duality by explicitly computing AdS$_2$ Witten diagrams with bosonic and fermionic loops.

It was recently observed that boundary correlators of the elementary scalar field of the Liouville theory on AdS$_2$ background are the same (up to a non-trivial proportionality coefficient) as the correlators of the chiral stress tensor of the Liouville CFT on the complex plane restricted to the real line. The same relation generalizes to the conformal abelian Toda theory: boundary correlators of Toda scalars on AdS$_2$ are directly related to the correlation functions of the chiral $\mathcal W$-symmetry generators in the Toda CFT and thus are essentially controlled by the underlying infinite-dimensional symmetry. These may be viewed as examples of AdS$_2$/CFT$_1$ duality where the CFT$_1$ is the chiral half of a 2d CFT; we shall refer to this as AdS$_{2}$/CFT$^{1/2}_{2}$. In this paper we demonstrate that this duality applies also to the non-abelian Toda theory containing a Liouville scalar coupled to a 2d $σ$-model originating from the $SL(2, \mathbb R)/U(1)$ gauged WZW model. Here the Liouville scalar is again dual to the chiral stress tensor $T$ while the other two scalars are dual to the parafermionic operators $V^\pm$ of the non-abelian Toda CFT. We explicitly check the duality at the next-to-leading order in the large central charge expansion by matching the chiral CFT correlators of $(T, V^+,V^-)$ (computed using a free field representation) with the boundary correlators of the three Toda scalars given by the tree-level and one-loop Witten diagrams in AdS$_{2}$.

Due to the bulk full Virasoro symmetry, this system provides an instance of a non-gravitational $\text{AdS}_{2}$/$\text{CFT}_{1}$ correspondence where the 1d boundary theory enjoys enhanced "$\frac{1}{2}$-Virasoro" symmetry. General boundary correlators are expected to be captured by the restriction of chiral correlators in a suitable $\mathcal WA_{n}$ Virasoro extension. At next-to-leading order in weak coupling expansion they have been conjectured to match the subleading terms in the large central charge expansion of the dual $\mathcal WA_{n}$ correlators. We explicitly test this conjecture on the boundary four point functions of the Toda scalar fields dual to $\mathcal WA_{n}$ generators with next-to-minimal spin 3 and 4. Our analysis is valid in the generic rank case and extends previous results for specific rank-2 Toda theories. On the AdS side, the extension is straightforward and requires the computation of a finite set of tree Witten diagrams. This is due to simple rank dependence and selection rules of cubic and quartic couplings. On the boundary, the CFT calculation is made feasible by exploiting crossing symmetry and specific meromorphic properties of the $\mathcal W$-algebra correlators at large central charge. We present the required 4-point functions in closed form for any rank and verify the bulk-boundary correspondence in full details.

Correlators of local operators inserted on a straight Wilson loop in a conformal gauge theory have the structure of a one-dimensional "defect" CFT. As was shown in arXiv:1706.00756, in the case of supersymmetric Wilson-Maldacena loop in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM one can compute the strong-coupling contributions to 4-point correlators of operator insertions by starting with the AdS$_5 \times S^5$ string action expanded near the AdS$_2$ minimal surface and evaluating the corresponding AdS$_2$ Witten diagrams. We perform the analogous computations in the non-supersymmetric case of the standard Wilson loop with no coupling to the scalars. The corresponding non-supersymmetric "defect" CFT$_1$ has an unbroken $SO(6)$ global symmetry. The elementary bosonic operators (6 SYM scalars and 3 components of the SYM field strength) are dual respectively to the $S^5$ embedding coordinates and AdS$_5$ coordinates transverse to the minimal surface ending on the line at the boundary. The $SO(6)$ symmetry is preserved provided the 5-sphere coordinates satisfy Neumann boundary conditions (as opposed to Dirichlet in the supersymmetric case); one should then integrate over the $S^5$. The massless $S^5$ fluctuations have logarithmic propagator, corresponding to the boundary scalar operator having dimension $Δ= \frac{5}{\sqrtλ} + \ldots$ at strong coupling. The resulting functions of 1d cross-ratio in the 4-point functions have a more complicated structure than in the supersymmetric case, involving polylogs (Li$_3$ and Li$_2$). We also discuss consistency with the operator product expansion which allows extracting the leading strong coupling corrections to the anomalous dimensions of the operators appearing in the intermediate channels.

For any gauge group $SU(N)$ we provide the analytic expression of the first correction $\sim ζ(3)\,κ^{2}$ and prove its universality. In the $SU(2)$ and $SU(3)$ theories we compute the scaling functions at order $\mathcal O(κ^{6})$. Remarkably, in the $SU(2)$ case the scaling function is equal to an analogous quantity describing the chiral 2-point functions $\langleΦ\overlineΦ\rangle$ in the same large R-charge limit. We conjecture that this $SU(2)$ scaling function is computed at all-orders by a $\mathcal N=4$ SYM expectation value of a matrix model object characterizing the one-loop contribution to the 4-sphere partition function. The conjecture provides an explicit series expansion for the scaling function and is checked at order $\mathcal O(κ^{10})$ by showing agreement with the available data in the sector of chiral 2-point functions.

We consider $\mathcal N=2$ $SU(N)$ SQCD in four dimensions and a weak-coupling regime with large R-charge recently discussed in arXiv:1803.00580. If $\varphi$ denotes the adjoint scalar in the $\mathcal N=2$ vector multiplet, it has been shown that the 2-point functions in the sector of chiral primaries $(\text{Tr} \varphi^2)^n$ admit a finite limit when $g_\text{YM}\to 0$ with large R-charge growing like $\sim 1/g^2_\text{YM}$. The correction with respect to $\mathcal N=4$ correlators is a non-trivial function $F(λ; N)$ of the fixed coupling $λ=n\,g^2_\text{YM}$ and the gauge algebra rank $N$. We show how to exploit the Toda equation following from the $tt^*$ equations in order to control the R-charge dependence. This allows to determine $F(λ; N)$ at order $O(λ^{10})$ for generic $N$, greatly extending previous results and placing on a firmer ground a conjecture proposed for the $SU(2)$ case. We show that a similar Toda equation, discussed in the past, may indeed be used for the additional sector $(\text{Tr}\varphi^2)^n\,\text{Tr}\varphi^3$ due to the special mixing properties of these composite operators on the 4-sphere. We discuss the large R-limit in this second case and compute the associated scaling function $F$ at order $O(λ^7)$ and generic $N$. Large $N$ factorization is also illustrated as a check of the computation.

Supersymmetric partition function of $\mathcal N=1$ superconformal theories on $S^1_β \times S^3$ is related to the superconformal index receiving contributions from short representations. The leading coefficients in the small $β$ (high "temperature") expansion of the index were previously related to the conformal anomaly coefficients of the theory. Assumptions underlying universality of these relations were tested only for simplest low-spin unitary multiplets. Here we consider examples of higher derivative non-unitary $\mathcal N=1$ multiplets that naturally appear in the context of extended conformal supergravities and compute their superconformal index. We compare the coefficients in the small $β$ expansion of the index with those proposed earlier for unitary multiplets and suggest some modifications that should apply universally to all types of theories. We also comment on the structure of subleading terms and the case of $\mathcal N=4$ conformal supergravity.

Building on our previous work arXiv:1712.06874 we consider one-parameter Polchinski-Sully generalization of the Wilson-Maldacena (WM) loops in planar N=4 SYM theory. This breaks local supersymmetry of WM loop and leads to running of the deformation parameter $ζ$. We compute the three-loop ladder diagram contribution to the expectation value of the circular loop which gives the full answer for large $ζ$. The limit $ζ\gg 1$, $λζ^2=$ fixed in which the expectation value is determined by the Gaussian adjoint scalar path integral might be exactly solvable despite the lack of global supersymmetry. We study similar generalization of the 1/4-BPS "latitude" WM loop which depends on two parameters (in addition to the 't Hooft coupling $λ$). One may also introduce another supersymmetry-breaking parameter -- the winding number of the scalar coupling circle. We find the two-loop expression for the expectation value of the associated loop by combining the ladder diagram contribution with an indirect determination of the non-ladder contribution using 1d defect CFT perturbation theory.

The behaviour of the third type of agents is coded by {\em indifference} w.r.t. the game at all: their dynamics is designed to account for risk-aversion as an innovative behavioral gambit. From this point of view, the choice of this solitary strategy is enhanced when innovation starts, while is depressed when it becomes the majority option. This implies that the payoff matrix of the game becomes dependent on the global awareness of the agents measured by the relevance of the population of the indifferent players. The resulting dynamics is non-trivial with different kinds of phase transition depending on a few model parameters. The phase diagram is studied on regular as well as complex networks.

We propose a modification of the cost function of the Hopfield model whose salient features shine in its Taylor expansion and result in more than pairwise interactions with alternate signs, suggesting a unified framework for handling both with deep learning and network pruning. In our analysis, we heavily rely on the Hamilton-Jacobi correspondence relating the statistical model with a mechanical system. In this picture, our model is nothing but the relativistic extension of the original Hopfield model (whose cost function is a quadratic form in the Mattis magnetization which mimics the non-relativistic Hamiltonian for a free particle). We focus on the low-storage regime and solve the model analytically by taking advantage of the mechanical analogy, thus obtaining a complete characterization of the free energy and the associated self-consistency equations in the thermodynamic limit. On the numerical side, we test the performances of our proposal with MC simulations, showing that the stability of spurious states (limiting the capabilities of the standard Hebbian construction) is sensibly reduced due to presence of unlearning contributions in this extended framework.

We compute the expectation value of this operator for circular loop as a function of $ζ$ to second order in the planar weak coupling expansion in N=4 SYM theory. We then explain the relation of the expansion near the two conformal points $ζ=0$ and $ζ=1$ to the correlators of scalar operators inserted on the loop. We also discuss the $AdS_5\times S^5$ string 1-loop correction to the strong-coupling expansion of the standard circular Wilson loop, as well as its generalization to the case of mixed boundary conditions on the five-sphere coordinates, corresponding to general $ζ$. From the point of view of the defect 1d CFT defined on the Wilson line, the $ζ$-dependent term can be seen as a perturbation driving a RG flow from the standard Wilson loop in the UV to the supersymmetric Wilson loop in the IR. Both at weak and strong coupling we find that the logarithm of the expectation value of the standard Wilson loop for the circular contour is larger than that of the supersymmetric one, which appears to be in agreement with the 1d analog of the F-theorem.

We study the finite temperature properties of a recently introduced string bit model designed to capture some features of the emergent string in the tensionless limit. The model consists of a pair of bosonic and fermionic bit operators transforming in the adjoint representation of the color group SU(N). Color confinement is not achieved as a dynamical effect, but instead is enforced by an explicit singlet projection. At large N and finite temperature, the model has a non trivial thermodynamics. In particular, there is a Hagedorn type transition at a finite temperature $T=T_H$ where the string degrees of freedom are liberated and the free energy gets a large contribution $\sim N^{2}$ that plays the role of an order parameter. For $T>T_H$, the low temperature phase becomes unstable. In the new phase, the thermodynamically favoured configurations are characterized by a non-trivial gapped density of the SU(N) angles associated with the singlet projection. We present an accurate algorithm for the determination of the density profile at $N=\infty$. In particular, we determine the gap endpoint at generic temperature and analytical expansions valid near the Hagedorn transition as well as at high temperature. The leading order corrections are characterized by non-trivial exponents that are determined analytically and compared with explicit numerical calculations.

We study the large $N$ expansion of winding Wilson loops in the off-critical regime of the Gross-Witten-Wadia (GWW) unitary matrix model. These have been recently considered in arXiv:1705.06542 and computed by numerical methods. We present various analytical algorithms for the precise computation of both the perturbative and instanton corrections to the Wilson loops. In the gapped phase of the GWW model we present the genus five expansion of the one-cut resolvent that captures all winding loops. Then, as a complementary tool, we apply the Periwal-Shevitz orthogonal polynomial recursion to the GWW model coupled to suitable sources and show how it generates all higher genus corrections to any specific loop with given winding. The method is extended to the treatment of instanton effects including higher order $1/N$ corrections. Several explicit examples are fully worked out and a general formula for the next-to-leading correction at general winding is provided. For the simplest cases, our calculation checks exact results from the Schwinger-Dyson equations, but the presented tools have a wider range of applicability.

We consider the one-parameter generalization $S^4_q$ of 4-sphere with a conical singularity due to identification $τ=τ+ 2 πq$ in one isometric angle. We compute the value of the spectral zeta-function at zero $z(q) = ζ(0, q)$ that controls the coefficient of the logarithmic UV divergence of the one-loop partition function on $S^4_q$. While the value of the conformal anomaly a-coefficient is proportional to $z(1)$, we argue that in general the second $c = C_T$ anomaly coefficient is related to a particular combination of the second and first derivatives of $z(q) $ at $q=1$. The universality of this relation for $C_T$ is supported also by examples in 6 and 2 dimensions. We use it to compute the c-coefficient for conformal higher spins finding that it coincides with the "$r=-1$" value of the one-parameter Ansatz suggested in arXiv:1309.0785. Like the sums of $a_s$ and $c_s$ coefficients, the regularized sum of $z_s(q)$ over the whole tower of conformal higher spins $s=1,2, ...$ is found to vanish, implying UV finiteness on $S^4_q$ and thus also the vanishing of the associated Re'nyi entropy. Similar conclusions are found to apply to the standard 2-derivative massless higher spin tower. We also present an independent computation of the full set of conformal anomaly coefficients of the 6d Weyl graviton theory defined by a particular combination of the three 6d Weyl invariants that has a (2,0) supersymmetric extension.

These relations were determined up to one free parameter $ξ$ and its value was then conjectured using some additional assumptions. A different value for $ξ$ was recently suggested in arXiv:1702.03518 using a different method. Here we confirm that this latter value is indeed the correct one by providing an additional data point: the Weyl anomaly coefficient $c_3$ for the higher derivative (1,0) superconformal 6d vector multiplet. This multiplet contains the 4-derivative conformal gauge vector, 3-derivative fermion and 2-derivative scalar. We find the corresponding value of $c_3$ which is proportional to the coefficient $C_T$ in the 2-point function of stress tensor using its relation to the first derivative of the Renyi entropy or the second derivative of the free energy on the product of thermal circle and 5d hyperbolic space. We present some general results of computation of the Renyi entropy and $C_T$ from the partition function on $S^1 \times \mathbb H^{d-1}$ for higher derivative conformal scalars, spinors and vectors in even dimensions. We also give an independent derivation of the conformal anomaly coefficients of the higher derivative vector multiplet from the Seeley-DeWitt coefficients on an Einstein background.

Simplest examples of AdS/CFT duality correspond to free CFTs in d dimensions with fields in vector or adjoint representation of an internal symmetry group dual in the large N limit to a theory of massless or massless plus massive higher spins in AdS_{d+1}. One may also study generalizations when conformal fields belong to higher dimensional representations, i.e. carry more than two internal symmetry indices. Here we consider the case of the 3-fundamental ("3-plet") representation. One motivation is a conjectured connection to multiple M5-brane theory: heuristic arguments suggest that it may be related to an (interacting) CFT of 6d (2,0) tensor multiplets in 3-plet representation of large N symmetry group that has an AdS_7 dual. We compute the singlet partition function Z on S^1 x S^{d-1} for a free field in 3-plet representation of U(N) and analyse its novel large N behaviour. The large N limit of the low temperature expansion of Z which is convergent in the vector and adjoint cases here is only asymptotic, reflecting the much faster growth of the number of singlet operators with dimension, indicating a phase transition at very low temperature. Indeed, while the critical temperatures in the vector (T_c ~ N^a, a >0) and adjoint (T_c ~ 1) cases are finite, we find that in the 3-plet case T_c ~ 1/ log N, i.e. it approaches zero at large N. We discuss some details of large N solution for the eigenvalue distribution. Similar conclusions apply to higher p-plet representations of U(N) or O(N) and also to the free p-tensor theories invariant under [U(N)]^p or [O(N)]^p starting with p=3.

We compute them by equivariant localization and analyze the structure of the exact instanton corrections to the classical chiral ring relations. We predict exact relations valid at all instanton number among the traces $\langle\text{Tr}\varphi^{n}\rangle$, where $\varphi$ is the scalar field in the gauge multiplet. In the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit, such relations may be explained in terms of the available quantized Seiberg-Witten curves. Instead, the full two-parameter deformation enjoys novel features and the ring relations require non trivial additional derivative terms with respect to the modular parameter. Higher rank groups are briefly discussed emphasizing non-factorization of correlators due to the $Ω$-deformation. Finally, the structure of the deformed ring relations in the $\mathcal N=2^{\star}$ theory is analyzed from the point of view of the Alday-Gaiotto-Tachikawa correspondence proving consistency as well as some interesting universality properties.

The action is defined as an induced one from path integral of a conformal scalar field in curved background coupled to higher spin fields. We analyse in detail the dependence of the quadratic part of the induced action on the spin 1 and spin 3 fields, determining the presence of a curvature-dependent mixed spin 1 - spin 3 term. One consequence is that the pure spin 3 kinetic term cannot be gauge-invariant on its own beyond the leading term in small curvature expansion. We also compute the non-zero contribution of the 1-3 mixing term to the conformal anomaly c-coefficient. One is thus to determine all such mixing terms before addressing the question of possible vanishing of the total c-coefficient in the conformal higher spin theory.

Epidemic spreading on complex networks depends on the topological structure as well as on the dynamical properties of the infection itself. Generally speaking, highly connected individuals play the role of hubs and are crucial to channel information across the network. On the other hand, static topological quantities measuring the connectivity structure are independent on the dynamical mechanisms of the infection. A natural question is therefore how to improve the topological analysis by some kind of dynamical information that may be extracted from the ongoing infection itself. In this spirit, we propose a novel vaccination scheme that exploits information from the details of the infection pattern at the moment when the vaccination strategy is applied. Numerical simulations of the infection process show that the proposed immunization strategy is effective and robust on a wide class of complex networks.

We consider the $Ω$-deformed $\mathcal{N}=2$ $SU(2)$ gauge theory in four dimensions with $N_{f}=4$ massive fundamental hypermultiplets. The low energy effective action depends on the deformation parameters $\varepsilon_{1}, \varepsilon_{2}$, the scalar field expectation value $a$, and the hypermultiplet masses ${\bf m}=(m_{1}, m_{2}, m_{3}, m_{4})$. Motivated by recent findings in the $\mathcal{N}=2^{*}$ theory, we explore the theories that are characterized by special fixed ratios $\varepsilon_{2}/\varepsilon_{1}$ and ${\bf m}/\varepsilon_{1}$ and propose a simple condition on the structure of the multi-instanton contributions to the prepotential determining the effective action. This condition determines a finite set $Π_{N}$ of special points such that the prepotential has $N$ poles at fixed positions independent on the instanton number. In analogy with what happens in the $\mathcal{N}=2^{*}$ gauge theory, the full prepotential of the $Π_{N}$ theories may be given in closed form as an explicit function of $a$ and the modular parameter $q$ appearing in special combinations of Eisenstein series and Jacobi theta functions with well defined modular properties. The resulting finite pole partition functions are related by AGT correspondence to special 4-point spherical conformal blocks of the Virasoro algebra. We examine in full details special cases where the closed expression of the block is known and confirms our Ansatz. We systematically study the special features of Zamolodchikov's recursion for the $Π_{N}$ conformal blocks. As a result, we provide a novel effective recursion relation that can be exactly solved and allows to prove the conjectured closed expressions analytically in the case of the $Π_{1}$ and $Π_{2}$ conformal blocks.
