Brownian vortexes are stochastic machines that use static non-conservative force fields to bias random thermal fluctuations into steadily circulating currents. The archetype for this class of systems is a colloidal sphere in an optical tweezer. Trapped near the focus of a strongly converging beam of light, the particle is displaced by random thermal kicks into the nonconservative part of the optical force field arising from radiation pressure, which then biases its diffusion. Assuming the particle remains localized within the trap, its time-averaged trajectory traces out a toroidal vortex. Unlike trivial Brownian vortexes, such as the biased Brownian pendulum, which circulate preferentially in the direction of the bias, the general Brownian vortex can change direction and even topology in response to temperature changes. Here we introduce a theory based on a perturbative expansion of the Fokker-Planck equation for weak non-conservative driving. The first-order solution takes the form of a modified Boltzmann relation and accounts for the rich phenomenology observed in experiments on micrometer-scale colloidal spheres in optical tweezers.

Abstract:
We derive a Khinchine-Pollaczek formula for random walks whose steps have a geometric left tail. The construction rests on the memory-less property of the geometric distribution. An example from a tandem queue modeling dynamic instability in microtubules is given.

We give a direct construction of the conformally invariant measure on self-avoiding loops in Riemann surfaces (Werner measure) from chordal $\text{SLE}_{8/3}$. We give a new proof of uniqueness of the measure and use Schramm's formula to construct a measure on boundary bubbles encircling an interior point. After establishing covariance properties for this bubble measure, we apply these properties to obtain a measure on loops by integrating measures on boundary bubbles. We calculate the distribution of the conformal radius of boundary bubbles encircling an interior point and deduce from it explicit upper and lower bounds for the loop measure.

We show that for the conformal restriction measure with exponent $b$ in the unit disk on hulls $γ$ connecting $e^{ix}$ to 1 the probability of the event that $γ$ avoids the disk of radius $q$ centered at zero decays like $\exp(-bπx/(1-q))$ if either $b\in[5/8,1]\cup[5/4,\infty)$ and $x\in(0,π]$, or if $b\in(1,5/4)$, $x\in(0,π)$, and $bx\leπ$.

Abstract:
We study the probability that chordal $\text{SLE}_{8/3}$ in the unit disk from $\exp(ix)$ to 1 avoids the disk of radius $q$ centered at zero. We find the initial/boundary-value problem satisfied by this probability as a function of $x$ and $a=\ln q$, and show that asymptotically as $q$ tends to one this probability decays like $\exp(-cx/(1-q))$ with $c=5π/8$ for $x\in[0,π]$. Abstract:
We give a geometric derivation of SLE($κ,ρ$) in terms of conformally invariant random growing subsets of polygons. We relate the parameters $ρ_j$ to the exterior angles of the polygons. We also show that SLE($κ,ρ$) can be generated by a metric Brownian motion, where metric and Brownian motion are coupled and the metric ist the pull-back metric of the Euclidean metric of an evolving polygon.

We also highlight the necessity of moduli for a consistent kinematic description of these more general stochastic processes. As an illustration we give a geometric derivation of $\text{SLE}(κ,ρ)$ in terms of conformally invariant random growing compact subsets of polygons. The parameters $ρ_j$ are related to the exterior angles of the polygons. We also show that $\text{SLE}(κ,ρ)$ can be generated by a Brownian motion in a gravitational background, where the metric and the Brownian motion are coupled. The metric is obtained as the pull-back of the Euclidean metric of a fluctuating polygon.

We discuss the possible candidates for conformally invariant random non-self-crossing curves which begin and end on the boundary of a multiply connected planar domain, and which satisfy a Markovian-type property. We consider both, the case when the curve connects a boundary component to itself (chordal), and the case when the curve connects two different boundary components (bilateral). We establish appropriate extensions of Loewner's equation to multiply connected domains for the two cases. We show that a curve in the domain induces a motion on the boundary and that this motion is enough to first recover the motion of the moduli of the domain and then, second, the curve in the interior. For random curves in the interior we show that the induced random motion on the boundary is not Markov if the domain is multiply connected, but that the random motion on the boundary together with the random motion of the moduli forms a Markov process. In the chordal case, we show that this Markov process satisfies Brownian scaling and discuss how this limits the possible conformally invariant random non-self-crossing curves. We show that the possible candidates are labeled by a real constant and a function homogeneous of degree minus one which describes the interaction of the random curve with the boundary. We show that the random curve has the locality property if the interaction term vanishes and the real parameter equals six.

Then, we show that the vector-field describing the motion of the moduli is Lipschitz. We explain why this implies that "consistent," conformally invariant random simple curves are described by multidimensional diffusions, where one component is a motion on the boundary, and the other component is a motion on moduli space. We argue what the exact form of this diffusion is (up to a single real parameter $κ$) in order to model boundaries of percolation clusters. Finally, we show that this moduli diffusion leads to random non-self-crossing curves satisfying the locality property if and only if $κ=6$.

We study chordal Loewner families in the upper half-plane and show that they have a parametric representation. We show one, that to every chordal Loewner family there corresponds a unique measurable family of probability measures on the real line, and two, that to every measurable family of probability measures on the real line there corresponds a unique chordal Loewner family. In both cases the correspondence is being given by solving the chordal Loewner equation. We use this to show that any probability measure on the real line with finite variance and mean zero has univalent Cauchy transform if and only if it belongs to some chordal Loewner family. If the probability measure has compact support we give two further necessary and sufficient conditions for the univalence of the Cauchy transform, the first in terms of the transfinite diameter of the complement of the image domain of the reciprocal Cauchy transform, and the second in terms of moment inequalities corresponding to the Grunsky inequalities.
