Berkeley 59 is a nearby ($\sim$1 kpc) young cluster associated with the Sh2-171 H{\sc ii} region. We present deep optical observations of the central $\sim$2.5$\times$2.5 pc$^2$ area of the cluster, obtained with the 3.58-m Telescopio Nazionale Galileo. The $V$/($V$-$I$) color-magnitude diagram manifests a clear pre-main-sequence (PMS) population down to $\sim$ 0.2 M$_\odot$. Using the near-infrared and optical colors of the low-mass PMS members we derive a global extinction of A$_V$= 4 mag and a mean age of $\sim$ 1.8 Myr, respectively, for the cluster. We constructed the initial mass function and found that its global slopes in the mass ranges of 0.2 - 28 M$_\odot$ and 0.2 - 1.5 M$_\odot$ are -1.33 and -1.23, respectively, in good agreement with the Salpeter value in the solar neighborhood. We looked for the radial variation of the mass function and found that the slope is flatter in the inner region than in the outer region, indicating mass segregation. The dynamical status of the cluster suggests that the mass segregation is likely primordial. The age distribution of the PMS sources reveals that the younger sources appear to concentrate close to the inner region compared to the outer region of the cluster, a phenomenon possibly linked to the time evolution of star-forming clouds is discussed. Within the observed area, we derive a total mass of $\sim$ 10$^3$ M$_\odot$ for the cluster. Comparing the properties of Berkeley 59 with other young clusters, we suggest it resembles more to the Trapezium cluster.

The goal of this paper is to determine the rotation curve of the galaxy, as far as possible from the galactic center, using N type carbon stars. The stars were selected from their dereddened 2MASS colours, then the spectra were obtained with the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory and Asiago 1.8 meter telescopes. This publication adds radial velocities and Galactrocentric distances of 36 carbon stars, from which 20 are new confirmed. The new results for stars up to 25 kpc from the galactic center, suggest that the rotation curve shows a slight decline beyond the Solar circle.

(Abridged) This paper presents integrated magnitude and colours for synthetic clusters. The integrated parameters have been obtained for the whole cluster population as well as for the main-sequence (MS) population of star clusters. We have also estimated observed integrated magnitudes and colours of MS population of galactic open clusters, LMC and SMC star clusters. It is found that the colour evolution of MS population of star clusters is not affected by the stochastic fluctuations, however these fluctuations significantly affect the colour evolution of the whole cluster population. The fluctuations are maximum in $(V-I)$ colour in the age range 6.7 $<$ log (age) $<$ 7.5. Evolution of integrated colours of MS population of the clusters in the Milky Way, LMC and SMC, obtained in the present study are well explained by the present synthetic cluster model. The observed integrated $(B-V)$ colours of MS population of LMC star clusters having age $\geq$ 500 Myr seem to be distributed around $Z=$ 0.004 model, whereas $(V-I)$ colours are found to be more bluer than those predicted by the $Z=$ 0.004 model. $(V-I)$ vs $(B-V)$ two-colour diagram for the MS population of the Milky Way star clusters shows a fair agreement between the observations and present model, however the diagrams for LMC and SMC clusters indicate that observed $(V-I)$ colours are relatively bluer. Possible reasons for this anomaly have been discussed.

We compare the NIR colours of several C stars previously identified from spectroscopy or narrow band techniques in WLM, IC 10 and NGC 6822. We demonstrate that very few M stars have $(J-K)_0 > 1.4$ but a non negligible number of C stars are bluer than this limit. Thus, counts of M and C stars based on such limit do not produce pure samples. C/M ratios determined from NIR colours must be regarded as underestimates mainly because the M numbers include many warm C stars and also K stars if no blue limit is considered.

Thanks to wide field imagers, nearby galaxies with diameter of dozens of arcmin can be effectively surveyed.
We obtain, from the CFHT archives, a series of i' and g' MegaCam images of IC 1613 in order to determine the stellar surface density of the field and determine the shape of its spheroid. From the colour magnitude diagram we select some 36,000 stars, in the first three magnitudes of the red giant branch. The spatial distribution of these stars is used to establish the structure of the spheroid.
The position angle of the major axis of the stellar spheroid is found to be $\approx 90^\circ$, some 30$^\circ$ from the major axis of the HI cloud surrounding IC 1613. The surface density profile of the spheroid is not exponential over all the length of the major axis. A King profile, with a core radius of 4.5' and a tidal radius of 24' fits the data. The tidal truncation of the spheroid suggests that IC 1613 is indeed a satellite of M31.

From a 2 x 2 degree survey of NGC 6822 we have previously established that this Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy possesses a huge spheroid having more than one degree in length. This spheroid is in rotation but its rotation curve is known only within ~15' from the center. It is therefore critical to identify bright stars belonging to the spheroid to characterize, as far as possible, its outer kinematics. We use the new wide field near infrared imager CPAPIR, operated by the SMARTS consortium, to acquire J, Ks images of two 34.8' x 34.8' areas in the outer spheroid to search for C stars. The colour diagram of the fields allows the identification of 192 C stars candidates but a study of the FWHM of the images permits the rejection of numerous non-stellar objects with colours similar to C stars. We are left with 75 new C stars, their mean Ks magnitude and mean colour are similar to the bulk of known NGC 6822 C stars. This outer spheroid survey confirms that the intermediate-age AGB stars are a major contributor to the stellar populations of the spheroid. The discovery of some 50 C stars well beyond the limit of the previously known rotation curve calls for a promising spectroscopic follow-up to a major axis distance of 40'.

We have previously established, from a carbon star survey, that the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822 is much larger than its central bright core.
Four MegaCam fields are acquired to survey a 2$^\circ\times$ 2$^\circ$ area centred on NGC 6822 to fully determine its extent and map its stellar populations. Photometry of over one million stars is obtained in the SDSS g$'$, r$'$, i$'$ to three magnitudes below the TRGB. RGB stars, selected from their magnitudes and colours, are used to map the NGC 6822 stellar distribution up to a distance of 60 arcmin. We map the reddening over the whole area. We establish that the stellar outer structure of NGC 6822 is elliptical in shape, with $ε=0.36$ and a major-axis PA = 65$^\circ$, contrasting with the orientation of the HI disk. The density enhancement can be seen up to a semi-major axis of 36$'$ making NGC 6822 as big as the Small Magellanic Cloud. We fit two exponentials to the surface density profile of the spheroid, and identify a bulge with a scale length of 3.85$'$ and an outer spheroid with a scale length of 10.0$'$. We find intermediate-age C stars up to $\sim$ 40$'$ while demonstrating that the SDSS filters are unsuitable to identify extragalactic C stars. NGC 6822 is a unique Local Group galaxy with shape and structure suggesting a polar ring configuration. Radial velocities of carbon stars have indeed demonstrated that there are two kinematical systems in NGC 6822.

Star counts, obtained from a 2 x 2 degree area centered on NGC 6822 have revealed an optical image of this galaxy composed of two components: in addition to the well-known HI disk with its young stellar component, there is a spheroidal stellar structure as extensive as its HI disk but with its major axis at roughly right angles to it which we traced to at least 36 arcmin. Radial velocities of over 100 intermediate-age carbon stars found within this structure display kinematics contrasting strongly with those of the HI disk. These C stars belong to the spheroid. Although devoid of gas, the spheroid rotation is consistent with the I-band Tully-Fisher relation.
The orientation of the rotation axis which minimizes the stellar velocity dispersion coincides with the minor axis of the stellar population ellipsoid, lying very nearly in the plane of the HI disk. We conclude: that the HI disk is a polar ring and the spheroidal component an erstwhile disk, a fossil remainder of a past close encounter episode.

In the outer M31 region not previously surveyed, we identify 361 new C star candidates, having similar photometric properties to the known ones, and confirm theslight decrease in the luminosity of C stars with galactocentric distances. We show that the Sloan g', r', i' filters are a viable approach, comparable to (CN - TiO), to identify C stars. We find that the (g' - r') colours of cool C stars can be so red that prohibitively long g' exposures are needed to acquire faint extragalactic C stars. This makes the Sloan filters a less promising approach to extend a C star survey to several Mpc. Our uniform large field survey detects the edge of M31 disk at ~ 35 kpc. The intermediate-age population, represented by C stars, extends further to ~ 40 kpc.

We present a CFH12K wide field survey of the carbon star population in and around NGC 3109. Over 400 carbon stars identified have < M_I > = -4.71, confirming the nearly universality of mean magnitude of C star populations in Local Group galaxies. Star counts over the field reveal that NGC 3109 is a truncated disk shaped galaxy without an extensive stellar halo. The minor axis star counts reach the foreground density between 4' and 5', a distance that can be explained by an inclined disk rather than a spheroidal halo. We calculate a global C/M ratio of 1.75 +/- 0.20, a value expected for such a metal poor galaxy.

Using magnitude and color criteria, we employ the 2MASS data to identify 26 C stars in the the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy.
The mean Ks magnitude and the mean bolometric magnitude of C stars are found to be slightly brighter in the LMC and SMC when compared to those of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy. The difference could be explained by ages or/and abundance differences.

The stellar populations in a stellar complex in NGC 6946 are analyzed on images taken with the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 on board the Hubble Space Telescope. The complex is peculiar by its very high density of stars and clusters and semicircular shape. Its physical dimensions are about the same as for the local Gould Belt, but the stellar density is 1 - 2 orders of magnitude higher. In addition to an extremely luminous, 15 Myr old cluster discussed in an earlier paper, accounting for about 17% of the integrated V-band light, we identify 18 stellar clusters within the complex with luminosities similar to the brightest open clusters in the Milky Way. The color-magnitude diagram of individual stars in the complex shows a paucity of red supergiants compared to model predictions in the 10-20 Myr age range for a uniform star formation rate. We thus find tentative evidence for a gap in the dispersed star formation history, with a concentration of star formation into a young globular cluster during this gap. Confirmation of this result must, however, await a better understanding of the late evolution of stars in the corresponding mass range (> 12 Msun). A reddening map based on individual reddenings for 373 early-type stars is presented, showing significant variations in the absorption across the complex. These may be responsible for some of the arc-like structures previously identified on ground-based images. We finally discuss various formation scenarios for the complex and the star clusters within it.

Contrary to stars highlighting the optical image of NGC 6822, C stars are seen at large radial distances and trace a huge slightly elliptical halo which do not coincide with the huge HI cloud surrounding NGC6822. The previously unknown stellar component of NGC 6822 has a exponential scale length of 3.0' +/- 0.1' and can be traced to five scale lengths. The C/M ratio of NGC 6822 is evaluated to br 1.0 +/- 0.2.

We present the latest results of our ongoing homogeneous cool C star survey of Local Group dwarf galaxies. We apply our two color photometric technique to the study of two small galaxies: the Sagittarius dwarf (SagDIG) and Leo I. We identify 16 C stars in SagDIG and 13 C stars in Leo I. Even though both galaxies have a known C star population, we identify 7 previously unknown C stars in each galaxy. The photometric properties of all the known C stars in each galaxy are presented. It is shown that our definition of a C star, based on our photometric criteria, produces a subset of carbon stars with homogeneous properties useful for population comparison.

The identification of young star grou**s (YSG) in the three spiral galaxies NGC 3377A, NGC 3507, NGC 4394 is obtained by mean of the statistical method described in Paper I. We find 83, 90, 185 YSGs, respectively. An identification map of YSGs, as well as their size distribution, their B-luminosity function, their surface luminosity density radial behaviour, are presented and comparatively discussed. These data, in addition to those in Paper I, constitute a first sample suitable for seeking correlations among properties of galaxies and their YSG, which we briefly discuss here.

We present the latest results of our ongoing four filter photometric survey of C stars in Local Group dwarf irregular galaxies. Observations of the two low luminosity dwarf irregular galaxies, Pegasus and DDO 210, revealed respectively 40 and 3 C stars, assuming that the reddening of Pegasus is negligible. No C stars were identified in Tucana. Our observations permit the estimation of the CMD contamination by foreground M dwarf thus yielding reliable C/M ratios. Our R, I photometry of the C stars cannot be used to solve the extinction controversy toward Pegasus. The three C stars in DDO 210 are quite bright when compared to C star populations in dwarf galaxies. A larger fainter population in that galaxy seems however improbable. The statistics of C stars, currently on hand for dwarf galaxies, show a well-defined trend with the absolute magnitude of galaxies.

We present multiband photometric observations of three spiral galaxies selected in a sample suited for the study of young stellar grou**s and their relationship with the parent galaxy and the galactic environment. Star forming regions have been identified using an objective technique based on a multivariate statistical analysis. Maps of young star grou**s are given for each galaxy. The luminosity functions of the young star group populations show a remarkable similarity with a slope in the range -1.52 to -1.33 range. The size distributions peak around the classical 100pc value of the Local Group associations for two out of the three galaxies. NGC 1058 shows smaller associations (peak at about 50pc). The total number of young groups per unit B absolute luminosity of the galaxy is significantly greater in UGC 12732. The activity of star formation is in all three galaxies clearly stronger in the central regions.

We present a new automatic technique based on Principal Component Analysis and Cluster Analysis, with the aim of its application to the identification of those clumps in unresolved galaxies which likely represent regions of star formation. We test the method by applying it to the galaxy M~31, for which there are already several sets of identifications of OB associations based on multi--colour images of resolved stars. We use small--scale digital images of M~31 and compare the associations that we detect from these unresolved data with previously--published large--scale data, finding a rather good agreement. We obtain a strict agreement of our identification with the most compact associations of the original van den Bergh (1964) identification. We then apply the technique to CCD images of the more distant spiral galaxy NGC~2903 and identify 68 OB association candidates.

Galactic open clusters provide an abundant sample of stellar aggregates of various sizes, ages and metal abundances, apt to constitute a template for comparison with star systems in other galaxies. In this paper we present and discuss a standard methodology to synthesize {\sl U,B,V} fluxes and colours, and apply it to a set of 138 open clusters. Results are compared with previous available ones in the literature. We were able to calibrate a mass--luminosity relation by which we evaluated the mass of $\simeq 400$ open clusters, leading to a well defined present--day mass function. The number--complete sample of galactic open clusters presented in Battinelli \& Capuzzo--Dolcetta (1991) is enlarged of a $15\%$.}
