Hermite and Laguerre $β$-ensembles are important and well studied models in random matrix theory with special cases $β=1,2,4$ corresponding to eigenvalues of classical random matrix ensembles. It is well known that the largest eigenvalues in these, under appropriate scaling, converge weakly to the Tracy-Widom $β$ distribution whose distribution function $F_β$ has asymptotics given by $1-F_β(x)=\exp\left(-\frac{2β}{3}(1+o(1))x^{3/2}\right)$ as $x\to \infty$ and $F_β(x)=\exp\left(-\fracβ{24}(1+o(1))|x|^3\right)$ as $x\to -\infty$. Although tail estimates for the largest eigenvalues with correct exponents have been proved for the pre-limiting models, estimates with matching constants had not so far been established for general $β$; even in the exactly solvable cases, some of the bounds were missing. In this paper, we prove upper and lower moderate deviation estimates for both tails with matching constants.
We illustrate the usefulness of these estimates by considering certain questions in planar exponential last passage percolation (LPP), a well-studied model in the KPZ universality class in which certain statistics have same distributions as largest eigenvalues in Laguerre $β$-ensembles (for $β=1,2,4$). Using our estimates in conjunction with a combination of old and new results on the LPP geometry, we obtain three laws of iterated logarithm including one which settles a conjecture of Ledoux (J. Theor. Probab., 2018). We expect that the sharp moderate deviation estimates will find many further applications in LPP problems and beyond.

Abstract:
In this article, we study exponents which preserve complete monotonicity of functions on lattices. We prove that for any completely monotone function $f$ on a finite lattice, $f^α$ is completely monotone for all $α\geq c$, where $c$ is explicitly described. For finite distributive lattices we show that the bound $c$ is sharp. Important examples of completely monotone functions are void functionals…

Important examples of completely monotone functions are void functionals of random closed sets. We prove that if $V_{\mathcal{X}}$ is the void functional of a random subset $\mathcal{X}$ of $[n]$, then $V_{\mathcal{X}}^α$ is void functional of some random closed set for $α\geq n-1$. The results are analogous to the result of FitzGerald and Horn on Hadamard powers of positive semi-definite matrices. Also, we study the question of approximating an $m$-divisible random set by infinitely divisible random sets, and its generalization to lattices.

We develop a general universality technique for establishing metric scaling limits of critical random discrete structures exhibiting mean-field behavior that requires four ingredients: (i) from the barely subcritical regime to the critical window, components merge approximately like the multiplicative coalescent, (ii) asymptotics of the susceptibility functions are the same as that of the Erdos-Renyi random graph, (iii) asymptotic negligibility of the maximal component size and the diameter in the barely subcritical regime, and (iv) macroscopic averaging of distances between vertices in the barely subcritical regime.
As an application of the general universality theorem, we establish, under some regularity conditions, the critical percolation scaling limit of graphs that converge, in a suitable topology, to an $L^3$ graphon. In particular, we define a notion of the critical window in this setting. The $L^3$ assumption ensures that the model is in the Erdos-Renyi universality class and that the scaling limit is Brownian. Our results do not assume any specific functional form for the graphon. As a consequence of our results on graphons, we obtain the metric scaling limit for Aldous-Pittel's RGIV model [9] inside the critical window.
Our universality principle has applications in a number of other problems including in the study of noise sensitivity of critical random graphs [52]. In [10], we use our universality theorem to establish the metric scaling limit of critical bounded size rules. Our method should yield the critical metric scaling limit of Rucinski and Wormald's random graph process with degree restrictions [56] provided an additional technical condition about the barely subcritical behavior of this model can be proved.

On Hadamard powers of Random Wishart matrices

Abstract:
A famous result of Horn and Fitzgerald is that the $β$-th Hadamard power of any $n\times n$ positive semi-definite (p.s.d) matrix with non-negative entries is p.s.d $\forall β\geq n-2$ and is not necessarliy p.s.d for $β< n-2,$ with $\ β\notin \mathbb{N}$. In this article, we study this question for random Wishart matrix $A_n:={X_nX_n^T}$, where $X_n$ is $n\times n$ matrix with i.i.d. Gaussians. I…

In this article, we study this question for random Wishart matrix $A_n:={X_nX_n^T}$, where $X_n$ is $n\times n$ matrix with i.i.d. Gaussians. It is shown that applying $x\rightarrow |x|^α$ entrywise to $A_n$, the resulting matrix is p.s.d, with high probability, for $α>1$ and is not p.s.d, with high probability, for $α<1$. It is also shown that if $X_n$ are $\lfloor n^{s}\rfloor\times n$ matrices, for any $s<1$, the transition of positivity occurs at the exponent $α=s$.

It is known that this set is of the form $\{0, 1, \dots, n-3\}\cup [n-2, \infty)$. A natural question is "what is the possible form of the set of such $α$ for a fixed p.s.d. matrix with non-negative entries?". In all examples appearing in the literature, the set turns out to be union of a finite set and a semi-infinite interval. In this article, examples of matrices are given for which the set consists of a finite set and more than one disjoint interval of positive length. In fact, it is proved that for some matrices, the number of such disjoint intervals can be made arbitrarily large by taking $n$ large. The case when the entries of the matrices are not necessarily non-negative is also considered.
