Strong first-order phase transitions (SFOPT) during the evolution of the Higgs potential in the early universe not only allow for the dynamical generation of the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry, they can also source a stochastic gravitational wave (GW) background possibly detectable with future space-based gravitational waves interferometers. As SFOPTs are phenomenologically incompatible with the Standard Model (SM) Higgs sector, the observation of GWs from SFOPTs provides an exciting interplay between cosmology and particle physics in the search for new physics. With the C++ code BSMPTv3, we present for the first time a tool that performs the whole chain from the particle physics model to the gravitational wave spectrum. Extending the previous versions BSMPTv1 and v2, it traces the phases of beyond-SM (BSM) Higgs potentials and is capable of treating multiple vacuum directions and multi-step phase transitions. During the tracing, it checks for discrete symmetries, flat directions, and electroweak symmetry restoration, and finally reports the transition history. The transition probability from the false to the true vacuum is obtained from the solution of the bounce equation which allows for the calculation of the nucleation, percolation and completion temperatures. The peak amplitude and frequency of the GWs originating from sound waves and turbulence, are evaluated after the calculation of the thermal parameters at the transition temperature, and finally the signal-to-noise ratio at LISA is provided. The code BSMPTv3 is a powerful self-contained tool that comes more than timely and will be of great benefit for investigations of the vacuum structure of the early universe of not only simple but also complicated Higgs potentials involving several vacuum directions, with exciting applications in the search for new physics.

In this paper we use {\tt BSMPT v2} to investigate the size of the BAU that is obtained in the C2HDM with the two implemented approaches FH and VIA to derive the transport equations, by taking into account all relevant theoretical and experimental constraints. We identify similarities and differences in the results computed with the two methods. In particular, we analyse the dependence of the obtained BAU on the parameters relevant for successful baryogenesis. Our investigations allow us to pinpoint future directions for improvements both in the computation of the BAU and in possible avenues taken for model building.

We present the C++ code BSMPT v2 which is an extension of the previous code BSMPT for the calculation of the strength of the electroweak phase transition in extended Higgs sectors. The new version BSMPT v2 includes the features of BSMPT and extends the already implemented models (the 2-Higgs-Doublet model (2HDM) in its CP-conserving and CP-violating versions and the Next-to-2HDM) by the Complex Singlet Extension of the Standard Model (CxSM). The major upgrade is the implementation of the computation of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe (at present for the C2HDM) in two different approximation, called the FH and the VIA approach. Furthermore, the possibility of varying the renormalisation scale in the loop-corrected effective potential has been added. These changes and further smaller modifications are described in this manual. Additionally, a detailed explanation of the procedure for the implementation of new models is given, which has also changed with respect to the previous version.

We investigate the CP-violating 2-Higgs-Doublet Model (C2HDM) and the Next-to-Minimal 2-Higgs-Doublet Model (N2HDM) with respect to their potential to generate an SFOEWPT while being compatible with all relevant and recent theoretical and experimental constraints. The implications of an SFOEWPT on the collider phenomenology of the two models are analysed in detail in particular with respect to Higgs pair production. We provide benchmark points for parameter points that are compatible with an SFOEWPT and provide distinct di-Higgs signatures.

This document summarises the current theoretical and experimental status of the di-Higgs boson production searches, and of the direct and indirect constraints on the Higgs boson self-coupling, with the wish to serve as a useful guide for the next years. The document discusses the theoretical status, including state-of-the-art predictions for di-Higgs cross sections, developments on the effective field theory approach, and studies on specific new physics scenarios that can show up in the di-Higgs final state. The status of di-Higgs searches and the direct and indirect constraints on the Higgs self-coupling at the LHC are presented, with an overview of the relevant experimental techniques, and covering all the variety of relevant signatures. Finally, the capabilities of future colliders in determining the Higgs self-coupling are addressed, comparing the projected precision that can be obtained in such facilities. The work has started as the proceedings of the Di-Higgs workshop at Colliders, held at Fermilab from the 4th to the 9th of September 2018, but it went beyond the topics discussed at that workshop and included further developments.

In models with extended scalars and CP violation, resonance searches in double Higgs final states stand in competition with related searches in top quark final states as optimal channels for the discovery of beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics. This complementarity is particularly relevant for benchmark scenarios that aim to highlight multi-Higgs production as a standard candle for the study of BSM phenomena. In this note, we compare interference effects in $t\bar t$ final states with correlated phenomena in double Higgs production in the complex singlet and the complex 2-Higgs-Doublet Models. Our results indicate that the BSM discovery potential in di-Higgs searches can be underestimated in comparison to $t\bar t $ resonance searches. Top pair final states are typically suppressed due to destructive signal-background interference, while $hh$ final states can be enhanced due to signal-signal interference. For parameter choices where the two heavy Higgs resonances are well separated in mass, top final states are suppressed relative to the naive signal expectation, while estimates of the production cross section times branching ratio remain accurate at the ${\cal{O}}(10\%)$ level for double Higgs final states.

Current projections suggest that the LHC will have only limited sensitivity to di-Higgs production in the Standard Model (SM), possibly even after the completion of its high luminosity phase. Multi-Higgs final states play a fundamental role in many extensions of the SM as they are intrinsically sensitive to modifications of the Higgs sector. Therefore, any new observation in multi-Higgs final states could be linked to a range of beyond the SM (BSM) phenomena that are not sufficiently addressed by the SM. Extensions of the Higgs sector typically lead to new phenomenological signatures in multi-Higgs final states that are vastly different from the SM expectation. In this work, we provide a range of signature-driven benchmark points for resonant and non-resonant BSM di-Higgs production that motivate non-SM kinematic correlations and multi-fermion discovery channels. Relying on theoretically well-motivated assumptions, special attention is devoted to the particular case where the presence of new physics will dominantly manifest itself in multi-Higgs final states.

We provide the C++ tool BSMPT for calculating the strength of the electroweak phase transition in extended Higgs sectors. This relies on the loop-corrected effective potential at finite temperature including daisy resummation of the bosonic masses. The program allows to compute the vacuum expectation value (VEV) $v$ of the potential as a function of the temperature, and in particular the critical VEV $v_c$ at the temperature $T_c$ where the phase transition takes place. In addition, the loop-corrected trilinear Higgs self-couplings are provided. We apply an 'on-shell' renormalization scheme in the sense that the loop-corrected masses and mixing angles are required to be equal to their tree-level input values. This allows for efficient scans in the parameter space of the models. The models implemented so far are the CP-conserving and the CP-violating 2-Higgs-Doublet Models (2HDM) and the Next-to-Minimal 2HDM (N2HDM). The program structure is such that the user can easily implement further models. Our tool can be used for the investigation of electroweak baryogenesis in models with extended Higgs sectors and the related Higgs self-couplings. The combination with parameter scans in the respective models allows to study the impact on collider phenomenology and to make a link between collider phenomenology and cosmology. The program package can be downloaded at: https://github.com/phbasler/BSMPT.

We investigate the strength of the electroweak phase transition (EWPT) within the CP-violating 2-Higgs-Doublet Model (C2HDM). By applying a renormalisation scheme which allows efficient scans of the C2HDM parameter space, we analyse the possibility of a strong first order EWPT required for baryogenesis and study its phenomenological implications for the LHC. Like in the CP-conserving (real) 2HDM (R2HDM) we find that a strong EWPT favours mass gaps between the non-SM-like Higgs bosons. These lead to prominent final states comprised of gauge+Higgs bosons or pairs of Higgs bosons. In contrast to the R2HDM, the CP-mixing of the C2HDM also favours approximately mass degenerate spectra with dominant decays into SM particles. The requirement of a strong EWPT further allows us to distinguish the C2HDM from the R2HDM using the signal strengths of the SM-like Higgs boson. We additionally find that a strong EWPT requires an enhancement of the SM-like trilinear Higgs coupling at next-to-leading order (NLO) by up to a factor of 2.4 compared to the NLO SM coupling, establishing another link between cosmology and collider phenomenology. We provide several C2HDM benchmark scenarios compatible with a strong EWPT and all experimental and theoretical constraints. We include the dominant branching ratios of the non-SM-like Higgs bosons as well as the Higgs pair production cross section of the SM-like Higgs boson for every benchmark point. The pair production cross sections can be substantially enhanced compared to the SM and could be observable at the high-luminosity LHC, allowing access to the trilinear Higgs couplings.

The two-Higgs doublet model (2HDM) provides an excellent benchmark to study physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). In this work we discuss how the behaviour of the model at high energy scales causes it to have a scalar with properties very similar to those of the SM -- which means the 2HDM can be seen to naturally favor a decoupling or alignment limit. For a type II 2HDM, we show that requiring the model to be theoretically valid up to a scale of 1 TeV, by studying the renormalization group equations (RGE) of the parameters of the model, causes a significant reduction in the allowed magnitude of the quartic couplings. This, combined with $B$-physics bounds, forces the model to be naturally decoupled. As a consequence, any non-decoupling limits in type II, like the wrong-sign scenario, are excluded. On the contrary, even with the very constraining limits for the Higgs couplings from the LHC, the type I model can deviate substantially from alignment. An RGE analysis similar to that made for type II shows, however, that requiring a single scalar to be heavier than about 500 GeV would be sufficient for the model to be decoupled. Finally, we show that not only a 2HDM where the lightest of the CP-even scalars is the 125 GeV one does not require new physics to be stable up to the Planck scale but this is also true when the heavy CP-even Higgs is the 125 GeV and the theory has no decoupling limit for the type I model.

The discovery of the Higgs boson by the LHC experiments ATLAS and CMS has marked a milestone for particle physics. Yet, there are still many open questions that cannot be answered within the Standard Model (SM). For example, the generation of the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe through baryogenesis can only be explained qualitatively in the SM. A simple extension of the SM compatible with the current theoretical and experimental constraints is given by the 2-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM) where a second Higgs doublet is added to the Higgs sector. We investigate the possibility of a strong first order electroweak phase transition in the CP-conserving 2HDM type I and type II where either of the CP-even Higgs bosons is identified with the SM-like Higgs boson. The renormalisation that we apply on the loop-corrected Higgs potential allows us to efficiently scan the 2HDM parameter space and simultaneously take into account all relevant theoretical and up-to-date experimental constraints. The 2HDM parameter regions found to be compatible with the applied constraints and a strong electroweak phase transition are analysed systematically. Our results show that there is a strong interplay between the requirement of a strong phase transition and collider phenomenology with testable implications for searches at the LHC.
