Abstract:
We numerically report highly efficient coupling of single photons from a single dipole source (SDS) using a pair of nanostructures. The maximum coupling efficiency (ηp) of 56%, into guided modes of a silica nanotip (SNT), is found when the SNT of radius 0.43 μm is placed in the vicinity of a diamond nanotip (DNT) and a diamond nanowire (DNW). Additionally, we found that varying the radius of the D…

Additionally, we found that varying the radius of the DNT/DNW does not significantly affect the ηp-value. Furthermore, we investigate the coupling efficiency (η) of single photons from the SDS into guided modes of the DNT. The maximum η-value of 87% is found when the radially oriented SDS is positioned on the facet of the DNT of radius 0.4 μm. We found that the ηp-value is enhanced when the DNT is placed in the vicinity of another DNT and the DNW. The present platform may open new possibilities in quantum networks.

Abstract:
We demonstrate the fabrication of an optical nanofiber tip (ONFT) using a two-step chemical etching technique. This technique employs 30% and 24% hydrofluoric (HF) acid for the first and second steps, respectively. In the first step, a silica single-mode fiber with clad diameter of 125 um and core diameter of 10 um is immersed in the HF acid for 90 minutes. The resultant fiber diameter is reduced…

The resultant fiber diameter is reduced to 45 um. In the second step, such a fiber is again immersed in the HF acid for 60-80 minutes. The etching time is controlled to achieve the desired tip diameter of the ONFT. We characterize fabricated ONFTs by measuring optical transmission and surface morphology. The observed optical transmissions are more than 30% and tip diameters are less than 500 nm. The measured results readily reveal the merit of the employed technique as it is easy and cost-effective. Due to the strong confinement of the electromagnetic field at the tip of ONFTs, these structures lay versatile platforms with potential applications in sensing, photonics, and quantum optics.

We experimentally demonstrate the in-situ characterization of optical micro/nano fibers (MNFs).The MNF (test fiber, TF) is positioned on a microfiber (probe fiber, PF) and simulated for the scattering loss at various PF and TF diameters. The TF is fabricated using chemical etching technique. The PF is a conventional single-mode fiber with an outer diameter of 125 um. We measure the scattering loss along the TF axis at various positions i.e. diameters by mounting it on the PF. The diameter profile of the TF is inferred from the measured scattering loss and correlated with its surface morphology measurement. This work demonstrates an effective, low-cost, and non-destructive method for in-situ characterization of fabricated micro/nano fibers (OMNFs). It can detect and determine the irregularities on the surface of OMNFs. It can also be used to quantify the local evanescent field. Detecting such local points can improve studies that are carried out using these fields in various sensing and related study domains. It is simple to implement and can be accessed by all domains of researchers.

We demonstrate the channeling of fluorescence photons from quantum dots (QDs) into guided modes of an optical nanofiber tip (ONFT). We deposit QDs on the ONFT using micro/nano fluidic technology. We measure the photon-counting and emission spectrum of fluorescence photons that are channeled into guided modes of the ONFT. The measured emission spectrum confirms the deposition of QDs on the ONFT. We perform numerical simulations to determine channeling efficiency (η) for the ONFT and a single dipole source (SDS) system. For the radially oriented SDS at the center of the facet of the ONFT, we found the maximum η-value of 44% at the fiber size parameter of 7.16, corresponding to the ONFT radius of 0.71 μm for the emission wavelength at 620 nm. Additionally, we investigate the SDS position dependence in transverse directions on the facet of the ONFT in view of kee** experimental ambiguities. The present fiber inline platform may open new avenues in quantum technologies.
