Multistable Kuramoto splay states in a crystal of mode-locked laser pulses
Abstract: We demonstrate the existence of a multiplicity of co-existing frequency combs in a harmonically mode-locked laser that we link to the splay phases of the Kuramoto model with short range interactions. These splay states are multistable and the laser may wander between them under the influence of stochastic forces. Consequently, the many pulses circulating in the cavity are not necessarily coherent… ▽ More

Time Localized Tilted Beams in Nearly-Degenerate Laser Cavities
Abstract: We show that nearly degenerate Vertical External-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers emit tilted beams of time localized structures, i.e. mode-locked light pulses which can be individually addressed. Computation-free presentation of the fundamental group of generic $(p,q)$-torus curves
Abstract: In this note, we present a new method for computing fundamental groups of curve complements using a variation of the Zariski-Van Kampen method on general ruled surfaces. As an application we give an alternative (computation-free) proof for the fundamental group of generic $(p,q)$-torus curves.

Depth of characters of curve complements and orbifold pencils
Abstract: The present work is a user's guide to the results of a previous paper by the second and third authors, where a description of the space of characters of a quasi-projective variety was given in terms of global quotient orbifold pencils. Below we consider the case of plane curve complements and hyperplane arrangements. In particular, an infinite family of curves exhibiting characters of any torsio… ▽ More

Intersection Theory on Abelian-Quotient $V$-Surfaces and $\mathbf{Q}$-Resolutions
Abstract: In this paper we study the intersection theory on surfaces with abelian quotient singularities and we derive properties of quotients of weighted projective planes. We also use this theory to study weighted blow-ups in order to construct embedded $\mathbf{Q}$-resolutions of plane curve singularities and abstract $\mathbf{Q}$-resolutions of surfaces.

Cartier and Weil Divisors on Varieties with Quotient Singularities
Abstract: The main goal of this paper is to show that the notions of Weil and Cartier $\mathbb{Q}$-divisors coincide for $V$-manifolds and give a procedure to express a rational Weil divisor as a rational Cartier divisor. The theory is illustrated on weighted projective spaces and weighted blow-ups.

Quasi-projectivity, Artin-Tits Groups, and Pencil Maps
Abstract: We consider the problem of deciding if a group is the fundamental group of a smooth connected complex quasi-projective (or projective) variety using Alexander-based invariants. In particular, we solve the problem for large families of Artin-Tits groups. We also study finiteness properties of such groups and exhibit examples of hyperplane complements whose fundamental groups satisfy… ▽ More

Characteristic varieties of quasi-projective manifolds and orbifolds
Abstract: We prove that the irreducible components of the characteristic varieties of quasi-projective manifolds are either pull-backs of such components for orbifolds, or torsion points. This gives an interpretation for the so-called \emph{translated} components of the characteristic varieties, and shows that the zero-dimensional components are indeed torsion. The main result is used to derive further obst… ▽ More

On the connection between fundamental groups and pencils with multiple fibers
Abstract: We present two results about the relationship between fundamental groups of quasiprojective manifolds and linear systems on a projectivization. We prove the existence of a plane curve with non-abelian fundamental group of the complement which does not admit a map** onto an orbifold with non-abelian fundamental group. We also find an affine manifold whose irreducible components of its character… ▽ More

Algebraic (2,2)-transformation groups
Abstract: This paper contains the more significant part of the article with the same title that will appear in the Volume 12 of Journal of Group Theory (2009). In this paper we determine all algebraic transformation groups $G$, defined over an algebraically closed field $\sf k$, which operate transitively, but not primitively, on a variety $Ω$, provided the following conditions are fulfilled. We ask tha… ▽ More

Boolean 2-designs and the embedding of a 2-design in a group
Abstract: We try to embed a t-design in a finite commutative group in such a way that the sum of the k points of a block is zero. We can compute the number of blocks of the boolean 2-design having all the non zero vectors of $(Z_2)^n$ as the set of points and the k-subsets of elements the sum of which is zero as blocks.
