We review recent progress in the global determination of the collinear parton distributions (PDFs) of the proton within the NNPDF framework. This progress includes NNPDF4.0 variants with QED effects and with missing higher order uncertainties (MHOUs) via the theory covariance matrix formalism, as well as PDFs based on QCD calculations at approximate N$^3$LO (aN$^3$LO) accuracy. We present the combination of these theoretical developments resulting into NNPDF4.0 aN$^3$LO variants accounting for QED corrections and with a photon PDF. We compare these aN$^3$LO QED PDFs with analogous results obtained by the MSHT group, and briefly quantify their implications at the level of representative LHC cross-sections.

We extend the existing leading (LO), next-to-leading (NLO), and next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) NNPDF4.0 sets of parton distribution functions (PDFs) to approximate next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (aN$^3$LO). We construct an approximation to the N$^3$LO splitting functions that includes all available partial information from both fixed-order computations and from small and large $x$ resummation, and estimate the uncertainty on this approximation by varying the set of basis functions used to construct the approximation. We include known N$^3$LO corrections to deep-inelastic scattering structure functions and extend the FONLL general-mass scheme to $\mathcal{O}\left( α_s^3\right)$ accuracy. We determine a set of aN$^3$LO PDFs by accounting both for the uncertainty on splitting functions due to the incomplete knowledge of N$^3$LO terms, and to the uncertainty related to missing higher corrections (MHOU), estimated by scale variation, through a theory covariance matrix formalism. We assess the perturbative stability of the resulting PDFs, we study the impact of MHOUs on them, and we compare our results to the aN$^3$LO PDFs from the MSHT group. We examine the phenomenological impact of aN$^3$LO corrections on parton luminosities at the LHC, and give a first assessment of the impact of aN$^3$LO PDFs on the Higgs and Drell-Yan total production cross-sections. We find that the aN$^3$LO NNPDF4.0 PDFs are consistent within uncertainties with their NNLO counterparts, that they improve the description of the global dataset and the perturbative convergence of Higgs and Drell-Yan cross-sections, and that MHOUs on PDFs decrease substantially with the increase of perturbative order.

We include uncertainties due to missing higher order corrections to QCD computations (MHOU) used in the determination of parton distributions (PDFs) in the recent NNPDF4.0 set of PDFs. We use our previously published methodology, based on the treatment of MHOUs and their full correlations through a theory covariance matrix determined by scale variation, now fully incorporated in the new NNPDF theory pipeline. We assess the impact of the inclusion of MHOUs on the NNPDF4.0 central values and uncertainties, and specifically show that they lead to improved consistency of the PDF determination with an ensuing moderate reduction of PDF uncertainties at NNLO.

Continuously comparing theory predictions to experimental data is a common task in analysis of particle physics such as fitting parton distribution functions (PDFs). However, typically, both the computation of scattering amplitudes and the evolution of candidate PDFs from the fitting scale to the process scale are non-trivial, computing intesive tasks. We develop a new stack of software tools that aim to facilitate the theory predictions by computing FastKernel (FK) tables that reduce the theory computation to a linear algebra operation. Specifically, I present PineAPPL, our workhorse for grid operations, EKO, a new DGLAP solver, and yadism, a new DIS library. Alongside, I review several projects that become available with the new tools.

We present a collection of tools automating the efficient computation of large sets of theory predictions for high-energy physics. Calculating predictions for different processes often require dedicated programs. These programs, however, accept inputs and produce outputs that are usually very different from each other. The industrialization of theory predictions is achieved by a framework which harmonizes inputs (runcard, parameter settings), standardizes outputs (in the form of grids), produces reusable intermediate objects, and carefully tracks all meta data required to reproduce the computation. Parameter searches and fitting of non-perturbative objects are exemplary use cases that require a full or partial re-computation of theory predictions and will thus benefit of such a toolset. As an example application we present a study of the impact of replacing NNLO QCD K-factors in a PDF fit with the exact NNLO predictions.

Fitting PDFs requires the integration of a broad range of datasets, both from data and theory side, into a unique framework. While for data the integration mainly consists in the standardization of the data format, for the theory predictions there are multiple ingredients involved. Different providers are developed by separate groups for different processes, with a variety of inputs (runcards) and outputs (interpolation grids). Moreover, since processes are measured at different scales, DGLAP evolution has to be provided for the PDF candidate, or precomputed into the grids. We are working towards the automation of all these steps in a unique framework, that will be useful for any PDF fitting groups, and possibly also for phenomenological studies.

Wireless networks are commonly used in public spaces, universities and public institutions and provide accurate and easily accessible information to monitor the mobility and behavior of users. Following the application of containment measures during the recent pandemic, we analyse extensive data from the WiFi network in a University Campus in Italy during three periods, corresponding to partial lockdown, partial opening, and almost complete opening. We measure the probability distributions of groups and link activation at Wi-Fi Access Points, investigating how different areas are used in the presence of restrictions. We rank the hotspots and the area they cover according to their crowding and to the probability of link formation, which is the relevant variable in determining potential outbreaks. We consider a recently proposed epidemic model on simplicial temporal networks and we use the measured distributions to infer the change in the reproduction number in the three phases. Our data show that additional measures are necessary to limit the epidemic spreading in the total opening phase, due to the dramatic increase in the number of contacts.

Nowadays log files handling imposes to ISPs (intended in their widest scope) strict normative duties apart from common technological issues. This work analyses how retention time policies and timestam** are deeply interlinked from the point of view of service providers, possibly leading to costs rise. A new schema is proposed trying to mitigate the need for third-party suppliers, enforcing cryptographic primitives well established in other fields of Information Technology but perhaps not yet widespread in logs management. The foundations of timestam** are recapped, and properties of cryptographic primitives introduced as a natural way to bypass legacy schema inefficiency and as an extra level of protection: these choices are justified by savings estimation (with regard to different ISP magnitudes) and by some basic security considerations.

Dealing with quadratic payments, marginal probability is usually considered ideally constant, maybe for the sake of initial simplicity. Considering the voting scenario depicted in "Quadratic Payments: A Primer" by Vitalik Buterin, firstly its math foundations are made explicit. Develo** a simple referendum model, more realistic outcome probability and marginal probability qualitative shapes are introduced. Enforcing seemingly reasonable assumptions, quadratic payments are then generalized to take into account these new functions shapes, and the way they are still quadratic is discussed. Closing remarks underline the emerging of trade-off constraints not existing in ideal case.
