The Kuramoto model describes the synchronization of coupled oscillators that have different natural frequencies. Among the many generalizations of the original model, Kuramoto and Sakaguchi (KS) proposed a {\it frustrated} version that resulted in dynamic behavior of the order parameter, even when the average natural frequency of the oscillators is zero. Here we consider a generalization of the frustrated KS model that exhibits new transitions to synchronization. The model is identical in form to the original Kuramoto model, but written in terms of unit vectors. Replacing the coupling constant by a coupling matrix breaks the rotational symmetry and forces the order parameter to point in the direction of the eigenvector with highest eigenvalue, when the eigenvalues are real. For complex eigenvalues the module of order parameter oscillates while it rotates around the unit circle, creating active states. We derive the complete phase diagram for Lorentzian distribution of frequencies using the Ott-Antonsen ansatz. We also show that changing the average value of the natural frequencies leads to further phase transitions where the module of the order parameter goes from oscillatory to static.

Kuramoto's original model describes the dynamics and synchronization behavior of a set of interacting oscillators represented by their phases. The system can also be pictured as a set of particles moving on a circle in two dimensions, which allows a direct generalization to particles moving on the surface of higher dimensional spheres. One of the key features of the 2D system is the presence of a continuous phase transition to synchronization as the coupling intensity increases. Ott and Antonsen proposed an ansatz for the distribution of oscillators that allowed them to describe the dynamics of the transition's order parameter with a single differential equation. A similar ansatz was later proposed for the D-dimensional model by using the same functional form of the 2D ansatz and adjusting its parameters. In this paper we develop a constructive method to find the ansatz, similarly to the procedure used in 2D. The method is based on our previous work for the 3D Kuramoto model where the ansatz was constructed using the spherical harmonics decomposition of the distribution function. In the case of motion in a D-dimensional sphere the ansatz is based on the hyperspherical harmonics decomposition. Our result differs from the previously proposed ansatz and provides a simpler and more direct connection between the order parameter and the ansatz.

Why does such a successful theory like Quantum Mechanics have so many mysteries? The history of this theory is replete with dubious interpretations and controversies, and yet a knowledge of its predictions, however, contributed to the amazing technological revolution of the last hundred years. In its very beginning Einstein pointed out that there was something missing, due to contradictions with the relativity theory. So, even though Quantum Mechanics explains all the nanoscale physical phenomena, there were many attempts to find a way to "complete" it, e.g. hidden-variable theories. In this paper, we discuss some of those enigmas, with special attention to the concepts of physical reality imposed by quantum mechanics, the role of the observer, prediction limits, a definition of collapse, and how to deal with correlated states (the basic strategy for quantum computers and quantum teleportation). That discussion is carried out within the framework of accepting that there is in fact nothing important missing, rather we are just restricted by the limitations imposed by quantum mechanics. The mysteries are thus explained by a proper interpretation of those limitations, which is achieved by introducing two interpretation rules within the Copenhagen paradigm.

Complexity reduction in the 3D Kuramoto model

The dynamics of large systems of coupled oscillators is a subject of increasing importance with prominent applications in several areas such as physics and biology. The Kuramoto model, where a set of oscillators move around a circle representing their phases, is a paradigm in this field, exhibiting a continuous transition between disordered and synchronous motion. Reinterpreting the oscillators as rotating unit vectors, the model was extended to allow vectors to move on the surface of D-dimensional spheres, with $D=2$ corresponding to the original model. It was shown that the transition to synchronous dynamics was discontinuous for odd D, raising a lot of interest. Inspired by results in 2D, Ott et al proposed an ansatz for density function describing the oscillators and derived equations for the ansatz parameters, effectively reducing the dimensionality of the system. Here we take a different approach for the 3D system and construct an ansatz based on spherical harmonics decomposition of the distribution function. Our result differs significantly from that proposed in Ott's work and leads to similar but simpler equations determining the dynamics of the order parameter. We derive the phase diagram of equilibrium solutions for several distributions of natural frequencies and find excellent agreement with simulations. We also compare the dynamics of the order parameter with numerical simulations and with the previously derived equations, finding good agreement in all cases. We believe our approach can be generalized to higher dimensions and help to achieve complexity reduction in other systems of equations.

Cross sections of $^{120}$Sn($α$,$α$)$^{120}$Sn elastic scattering have been extracted from the $α$ particle beam contamination of a recent $^{120}$Sn($^6$He,$^6$He)$^{120}$Sn experiment. Both reactions are analyzed using systematic double folding potentials in the real part and smoothly varying Woods-Saxon potentials in the imaginary part. The potential extracted from the $^{120}$Sn($^6$He,$^6$He)$^{120}$Sn data may be used as the basis for the construction of a simple global $^6$He optical potential. The comparison of the $^6$He and $α$ data shows that the halo nature of the $^6$He nucleus leads to a clear signature in the reflexion coefficients $η_L$: the relevant angular momenta $L$ with $η_L \gg 0$ and $η_L \ll 1$ are shifted to larger $L$ with a broader distribution. This signature is not present in the $α$ scattering data and can thus be used as a new criterion for the definition of a halo nucleus.

Angular distributions for the elastic scattering of 8Li on 9Be and the neutron transfer reactions 9Be(8Li,7Li)10Be and 9Be(8Li,9Li)8Be have been measured with a 27 MeV 8Li radioactive nuclear beam. Spectroscopic factors for 8Li|n=9Li and 7Li|n=8Li bound systems were obtained from the comparison between the experimental differential cross section and finite-range DWBA calculations with the code FRESCO. The spectroscopic factors obtained are compared to shell model calculations and to other experimental values from (d,p) reactions. Using the present values for the spectroscopic factor, cross sections for the direct neutron-capture reactions 7Li(n,g)8Li and 8Li(n,g)9Li were calculated in the framework of a potential model.
