We report the discovery of new pre-main sequence (PMS) stars in the Lagoon Nebula (M8) at a distance of 1.25 kpc, based on intermediate resolution spectra obtained with the Boller & Chivens spectrograph at the 6.5-m Magellan I telescope (Las Campanas Observatory, Chile). According to the spectral types, the presence of emission lines and the lithium 6708A absorption line, we are able to identify 27 classical T Tauri stars, 7 weak-lined T Tauri stars and 3 PMS emission objects with spectral type G, which we include in a separated stellar class denominated "PMS Fe/Ge class". Using near-infrared photometry either from 2MASS or from our own previous work we derive effective temperatures and luminosities for these stars and locate them in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, in order to estimate their masses and ages. We find that almost all of our sample stars are younger than 3 10^6 years and span over a range of masses between 0.8 and 2.5 Msun. A cross-correlation between our spectroscopic data and the X-ray sources detected with the Chandra ACIS instrument is also presented.

We have studied the properties of an infrared cluster embedded in the gas and dust of the southern part of the Carina Nebula (NGC 3372), where the probable existence of current star formation has already been predicted. We used mid-infrared (A & C bands) and near-infrared (J H K$_{\rm s}$) images from the MSX and the 2MASS surveys respectively, combined with an optical H$_α$ narrow-band filter image obtained at the CTIO. The infrared star cluster has at least 17 members, and its parameters, radius and stellar density are in very good agreement with high- to intermediate-mass star formation scenarios. The detected IR sources have roughly the same intrinsic infrared excess determined from their position in colour-colour and colour-magnitude diagrams, suggesting that these objects could be related to pre-main sequence stars of high to intermediate mass. Furthermore, we present a low-dispersion spectrum of LS 1883 (O9.5 V) star located near the centre of the IR cluster. The position of this object in the colour-colour and colour-magnitude IR diagrams lies close to the reddening vector of an ZAMS O9 V spectral type star, and it seems to be the first star of this cluster to emerge. All these facts are consistent with the current star-forming scenarios associated with highly embedded star clusters.

The second largest HII region in the Large Magellanic Cloud, N11B has been surveyed in the near IR.We present JHKs images of the N11B nebula. These images are combined with CO(1-0) emission line data and with archival NTT and HST/WFPC2 optical images to address the star formation activity of the region.IR photometry of all the IR sources detected is given. We confirm that a second generation of stars is currently forming in the N11B region. Our IR images show the presence of several bright IR sources which appear located towards the molecular cloud as seen from the CO emission in the area.Several of these sources show IR colours with YSO characteristics and they are prime candidates to be intermediate-mass Herbig Ae/Be stars. For the first time an extragalactic methanol maser is directly associated with IR sources embedded in a molecular core. Two IR sources are found at 2"(0.5 pc) of the methanol maser reported position.Additionally, we present the association of the N11A compact HII region to the molecular gas where we find that the young massive O stars have eroded a cavity in the parental molecular cloud, typical of a champagne flow. The N11 region turns out to be a very good laboratory for studying the interaction of winds, UV radiation and molecular gas.Several photodissociation regions are found.

We re-investigated the spectral classification of the binary components, obtaining spectral types of O6.5 V and O7.5 V for the primary and secondary, respectively, finding that both stars display weak C {\sc iii} $\lambda5696$ emission in their spectra. We also determined a radial-velocity orbit for HD 165052 with a period of 2.95510 $\pm$ 0.00001 d, and semiamplitudes of 94.8 and 104.7 $\pm$ 0.5 km s$^{-1}$, resulting in a mass ratio $Q = 0.9$. From a comparison with previous radial-velocity determinations, we found evidence of apsidal motion in the system. Several signatures of wind-wind collision, such as phase-locked variability of the X-ray flux and the Struve-Sahade effect, are also considered. It was also found that the reddening in the region should be normal, in contrast with previous determinations.

We present a method to calculate masses for components of both eclipsing and non-eclipsing binary systems as long as their apsidal motion rates are available. The method is based on the fact that the equation that gives the rate of apsidal motion is a supplementary equation that allows the computation of the masses of the components, if the radii and the internal structure constants of them can be obtained from theoretical models. For this reason the use of this equation makes the method presented here model dependent.
We apply this method to calculate the mass of the components of the non-eclipsing massive binary system HD 93205 (O3V+O8V), which is suspected to be a very young system. To this end, we computed a grid of evolutionary models covering the mass range of interest, and taking the mass of the primary (M_1) as the only independent variable, we solve the equation of apsidal motion for M_1 as a function of the age of the system. The mass of the primary we find ranges from M_1= 60+-19 msun for ZAMS models, which sets an upper limit for M_1, down to M_1= 40+-9 msun for an age of 2 Myr. Accordingly, the upper limit derived for the mass of the secondary (M_2= Q M_1) is M_2= 25 msun is in very good agreement with the masses derived for other O8V stars occurring in eclipsing binaries.

Abstract:
A new high-quality set of orbital parameters for the O-type spectroscopic binary HD93205 has been obtained combining echelle and coude CCD observations. The radial velocity orbits derived from the HeII 4686 A (primary component) and HeI 4471 A (secondary component) absorption lines yield semiamplitudes of 133 +/- 2 and 314 +/- 2 km/s for each binary component, resulting in minimum masses of 31 a…

A new high-quality set of orbital parameters for the O-type spectroscopic binary HD93205 has been obtained combining echelle and coude CCD observations. The radial velocity orbits derived from the HeII 4686 A (primary component) and HeI 4471 A (secondary component) absorption lines yield semiamplitudes of 133 +/- 2 and 314 +/- 2 km/s for each binary component, resulting in minimum masses of 31 and 13 Msol (q = 0.42). We also confirm for the binary components the spectral classification of O3V+O8V previously assigned. Assuming for the O8V component a ``normal'' mass of 22 - 25 Msol we would derive for the primary O3V a mass of ``only'' 52 - 60 Msol and an inclination of about 55 degrees for the orbital plane. We have also determined for the first time a period of apsidal motion for this system, namely 185 +/- 16 years using all available radial velocity data-sets of HD 93205 (from 1975 to 1999). Phase-locked variations of the X-ray emission of HD 93205 consisting of a rise of the observed X-ray flux near periastron passage, are also discussed.

We present the detection of an intermediate-mass pre-main-sequence population embedded in the nebular filaments surrounding the 30 Doradus region in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using HST/NICMOS. In addition to four previously known luminous Class I infrared ``protostars,'' the NICMOS data reveal 20 new sources with intrinsic infrared excess similar to Galactic pre-main sequence stars. Based on their infrared brightness, these objects can be identified as the LMC equivalent of Galactic pre-main sequence stars. The faintest LMC Young Stellar Objects in the sample have colors similar to T Tauri and have about the same brightness as T Tauri if placed at the distance of the LMC. We find no evidence for a lower-mass cut-off in the initial mass function. Instead, the whole spectrum of stellar masses from pre-main sequence stars with ~1.5Mo to massive O stars still embedded in dense knots appears to be present in the nebular filaments. The majority of the young stellar objects can be found to the north of the central starburst cluster R136. This region is very likely evolving into an OB association.
