We investigate resource allocation for quantum entanglement distribution over an optical network. We characterize and model a network architecture that employs a single quasi-deterministic time-frequency heralded Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) pair source, and develop a routing scheme for distributing entangled photon pairs over such a network. We focus on max-min fairness in entanglement distribution and compare the performance of various spectrum allocation schemes by examining the max-min and median number of EPR-pairs assigned by them, and the Jain index associated with this assignment. Since this presents an NP-hard problem, we identify two approximation algorithms that outperform others in minimum and mean EPR-pair rate distribution and are comparable to others in the Jain index. We also analyze how the network size and connectivity affect these metrics using Watts-Strogatz random graphs. We find that a spectrum allocation approach that achieves high minimum EPR-pair rate can perform significantly worse when the median EPR-pair rate, Jain index, and runtimes are considered.

Photorealistic avatars of human faces have come a long way in recent years, yet research along this area is limited by a lack of publicly available, high-quality datasets covering both, dense multi-view camera captures, and rich facial expressions of the captured subjects. In this work, we present Multiface, a new multi-view, high-resolution human face dataset collected from 13 identities at Reality Labs Research for neural face rendering. We introduce Mugsy, a large scale multi-camera apparatus to capture high-resolution synchronized videos of a facial performance. The goal of Multiface is to close the gap in accessibility to high quality data in the academic community and to enable research in VR telepresence. Along with the release of the dataset, we conduct ablation studies on the influence of different model architectures toward the model's interpolation capacity of novel viewpoint and expressions. With a conditional VAE model serving as our baseline, we found that adding spatial bias, texture warp field, and residual connections improves performance on novel view synthesis. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) have shown promising results for the task of Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) but they still fall behind Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs)/Transformer based models in terms of performance. In this paper, we propose a CNN based architecture that bridges this gap. Our work, Easter2.0, is composed of multiple layers of 1D Convolution, Batch Normalization, ReLU, Dropout, Dense Residual connection, Squeeze-and-Excitation module and make use of Connectionist Temporal Classification (CTC) loss. In addition to the Easter2.0 architecture, we propose a simple and effective data augmentation technique 'Tiling and Corruption (TACO)' relevant for the task of HTR/OCR. Our work achieves state-of-the-art results on IAM handwriting database when trained using only publicly available training data. In our experiments, we also present the impact of TACO augmentations and Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) on text recognition accuracy. We further show that Easter2.0 is suitable for few-shot learning tasks and outperforms current best methods including Transformers when trained on limited amount of annotated data. The spin polarization increases monotonically as a function of ion fluence. A relatively high polarization of 46 % and the SHA of 3.1 % are achieved on 40 nm thick films irradiated with 2 $\cdot$ 10$^{16}$ ions/cm$^2$ at 30 keV. An interesting divergence in the trends of the magnetization and SHA is observed for low disorder concentrations. The high spin polarization and its broad tunability range make ion-irradiated Fe$_{60}$Al$_{40}$ a promising material for application in spin electronic devices.

Recent progress in deep learning has led to the development of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) systems which perform remarkably well. Most research has been around recurrent networks as well as complex gated layers which make the overall solution complex and difficult to scale. In this paper, we present an Efficient And Scalable TExt Recognizer (EASTER) to perform optical character recognition on both machine printed and handwritten text. Our model utilises 1-D convolutional layers without any recurrence which enables parallel training with considerably less volume of data. We experimented with multiple variations of our architecture and one of the smallest variant (depth and number of parameter wise) performs comparably to RNN based complex choices. Our 20-layered deepest variant outperforms RNN architectures with a good margin on benchmarking datasets like IIIT-5k and SVT. We also showcase improvements over the current best results on offline handwritten text recognition task. We also present data generation pipelines with augmentation setup to generate synthetic datasets for both handwritten and machine printed text.

The Managed Care system within Medicaid (US Healthcare) uses Request For Proposals (RFP) to award contracts for various healthcare and related services. RFP responses are very detailed documents (hundreds of pages) submitted by competing organisations to win contracts. Subject matter expertise and domain knowledge play an important role in preparing RFP responses along with analysis of historical submissions. Automated analysis of these responses through Natural Language Processing (NLP) systems can reduce time and effort needed to explore historical responses, and assisting in writing better responses. Our work draws parallels between scoring RFPs and essay scoring models, while highlighting new challenges and the need for interpretability. Typical scoring models focus on word level impacts to grade essays and other short write-ups. We propose a novel Bi-LSTM based regression model, and provide deeper insight into phrases which latently impact scoring of responses. We contend the merits of our proposed methodology using extensive quantitative experiments. We also qualitatively asses the impact of important phrases using human evaluators. Finally, we introduce a novel problem statement that can be used to further improve the state of the art in NLP based automatic scoring systems.

Deep Neural Networks in NLP have enabled systems to learn complex non-linear relationships. One of the major bottlenecks towards being able to use DNNs for real world applications is their characterization as black boxes. To solve this problem, we introduce a model agnostic algorithm which calculates phrase-wise importance of input features. We contend that our method is generalizable to a diverse set of tasks, by carrying out experiments for both Regression and Classification. We also observe that our approach is robust to outliers, implying that it only captures the essential aspects of the input.

Deep Learning based models are currently dominating most state-of-the-art solutions for disease prediction. Existing works employ RNNs along with multiple levels of attention mechanisms to provide interpretability. These deep learning models, with trainable parameters running into millions, require huge amounts of compute and data to train and deploy. These requirements are sometimes so huge that they render usage of such models as unfeasible. We address these challenges by develo** a simpler yet interpretable non-deep learning based model for application to EHR data. We model and showcase our work's results on the task of predicting first occurrence of a diagnosis, often overlooked in existing works. We push the capabilities of a tree based model and come up with a strong baseline for more sophisticated models. Its performance shows an improvement over deep learning based solutions (both, with and without the first-occurrence constraint) all the while maintaining interpretability.

Changes of the magnetic and crystal structure on the microscopic scale in 40 nm FeRh thin films have been applied to investigate the phenomena of a disorder induced ferromagnetism at room temperature initiated through light ion-irradiation with fluences up to 0.125 Ne$^+$/nm$^{-2}$. Magnetometry shows an increase of magnetic ordering at low temperatures and a decrease of the transition temperature combined with a broadening of the hysteresis with rising ion fluence. $^{57}$Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy reveals the occurrence of an additional magnetic contributions with an hyperfine splitting of 27.2 T - identical to that of ferromagnetic B2-FeRh. The appearance of an anti-site Fe-contribution can be assumed to be lower than 0.6 Fe-at%, indicating that no change of the chemical composition is evident. The investigation of the local structure shows an increase of the static mean square relative displacement determined by X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, while an increase of the defect-concentration has been determined by positron annihilation spectroscopy. From the changes of the microscopic magnetic structure a similarity between the temperature induced and the structural disorder induced ferromagnetic phase can be observed. These findings emphasize the relationship between magnetic ordering and the microscopic defect structure in FeRh.

Ferromagnetism in certain B2 ordered alloys such as Fe$_{60}$Al$_{40}$ can be switched on, and tuned, via antisite disordering of the atomic arrangement. The disordering is accompanied by a $\sim$1 % increase in the lattice parameter. Here we performed a systematic disordering of B2 Fe$_{60}$Al$_{40}$ thin films, and obtained correlations between the order parameter ($S$), lattice parameter ($a_0$), and the induced saturation magnetization ($M_{s}$). As the lattice is gradually disordered, a critical point occurs at 1-$S$=0.6 and $a_0$=291 pm, where a sharp increase of the $M_{s}$ is observed. DFT calculations suggest that below the critical point the system magnetically behaves as it would still be fully ordered, whereas above, it is largely the increase of $a_0$ in the disordered state that determines the $M_{s}$. The insights obtained here can be useful for achieving tailored magnetic properties in alloys through disordering.

We investigated the structure-property relationship of Co$_2$MnSi Heusler thin films upon the irradiation with He$^+$ ions. The variation of the crystal structure with increasing ion fluence has been probed using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and associated with the corresponding changes of the magnetic behavior. A decrease of both the structural order and the moment in saturation is observed. Specifically, we detect a direct transition from a highly $L2_1$-ordered to a fully $A2$-disordered structure type and quantify the evolution of the $A2$ structural contribution as a function of ion fluence. Complementary TEM analysis reveals a spatially-resolved distribution of the $L2_1$ and $A2$ phases showing that the $A2$ disorder starts at the upper part of the films. The structural degradation in turn leads to a decreasing magnetic moment in saturation in response to the increasing fluence.

To get the deterministic solution, it has been assumed that the expansion ($θ$) in the model is proportional to the eigen value $σ^{1}_{1}$ of the shear tensor $σ^{i}_{j}$. The derived model represents the inflationary scenario as the proper volume increases exponentially with cosmic time. It is observed that the model has a point type singularity.
