We present a planar four-body model, called the Binary Asteroid Problem, for the motion of two asteroids (having small but positive masses) moving under the gravitational attraction of each other, and under the gravitational attraction of two primaries (with masses much larger than the two asteroids) moving in uniform circular motion about their center of mass. We show the Binary Asteroid Model has (at least) 6 relative equilibria and (at least) 10 one-parameter families of periodic orbits, two of which are of Hill-type. The existence of six relative equilibria and 8 one-parameter families of periodic orbits is obtained by a reduction of the Binary Asteroid Problem in which the primaries have equal mass, the asteroids have equal mass, and the positions of the asteroids are symmetric with respect to the origin. The remaining two one-parameter families of periodic orbits, which are of comet-type, are obtained directly in the Binary Asteroid Problem.

For the driven-dissipative system of two coupled bosonic modes in a nonlinear cavity resonator, we demonstrate a sequence of phase transitions from a trivial steady state to two distinct dissipative time crystalline phases. These effects are already anticipated at the level of the semiclassical analysis of the Lindblad equation using the theory of bifurcations and are further supported by the full quantum (numerical) treatment. The system is predicted to exhibit different dynamical phases characterized by an oscillating non-equilibrium steady state with non-trivial periodicity, which is a hallmark of time crystals. We expect that these phases can be directly probed in various cavity QED experiments.

We describe the APERture Tile In Focus (Apertif) system, a phased array feed (PAF) upgrade of the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope which has transformed this telescope into a high-sensitivity, wide field-of-view L-band imaging and transient survey instrument. Using novel PAF technology, up to 40 partially overlap** beams can be formed on the sky simultaneously, significantly increasing the survey speed of the telescope. With this upgraded instrument, an imaging survey covering an area of 2300 deg2 is being performed which will deliver both continuum and spectral line data sets, of which the first data has been publicly released. In addition, a time domain transient and pulsar survey covering 15,000 deg2 is in progress. An overview of the Apertif science drivers, hardware and software of the upgraded telescope is presented, along with its key performance characteristics.

We study dissipative translationally invariant free-fermionic theories with quadratic Liouvillians. Using a Lie-algebraic approach, we solve the Lindblad equation and find the density matrix at all times for arbitrary time dependence of the Liouvillian. We then investigate the Liouvillian spectral properties and derive a generic criterion for the closure of the dissipative gap, which is believed to be linked with nonequilibrium dissipative phase transitions. We illustrate our findings with a few exotic examples. Particularly, we show the presence of gapless modes with a linear spectrum for fermions with long-range hop**, which might be related to nonunitary conformal field theories. The predicted effects can be probed in experiments with ultracold atomic and quantum-optical systems using currently available experimental facilities.

The parameters of the ERTs are extracted from experimental mass differences and their values in bottomonium: the intercept $a(b\bar b)=0.131\,$GeV$^2$, the slope of the orbital ERT $b_l(b\bar b) =0.50$\,GeV$^2$, and the slope of the radial ERT, $b_n(b\bar b)=0.724$\,GeV$^2$, appear to be smaller than those in charmonium, where $a(c\bar c)=0.381$\,GeV$^2$, $b_l(c\bar c)=0.686$\,GeV$^2$, and the radial slope $b_n(c\bar c)= 1.074$\,GeV$^2$, which value is close to that in light mesons, $b_n(q\bar q)=1.1(1)$\,GeV$^2$. For the resonances above the $D\bar D$ threshold the masses of the $χ_{c0}(nP)$ with $n=2,3,4$, equal to 4218\,MeV, 4503\,MeV, 4754\,MeV, are obtained, while above the $B\bar B$ threshold the resonances $Υ(3\,^3D_1)$ with the mass 10693\,MeV and $χ_{b1}(4\,^3P_1)$ with the mass 10756\,MeV are predicted.

The dynamical picture of a quark-antiquark interaction in light mesons, which provides linearity of radial and orbital Regge trajectories (RT), is studied with the use of the relativistic string Hamiltonian with flattened confining potential and taking into account the self-energy and string corrections. Due to the flattening effect both slopes, $β_n$ of the radial and $β_l$ of the orbital RT, decrease by $\sim 30\%$ with the value of $β_n=1.30(5)$~GeV$^2$ being larger than $ β_l=0.95(5)$~GeV. The self-energy correction provides the linearity of RT and remains important up to very high excitations; the string correction decreases the slope of the orbital RT, while the intercept $β_0=0.51(1)~ $GeV$^2$ is equal to the squared centroid mass of $ρ(1S)$. If the universal gluon-exchanged potential without fitting parameters and screening function, as in heavy quarkonia, is taken, then the slope of the radial RT decreases, $β_n=1.15(8)$~GeV$^2$, and its value coincides with the slope of the orbital RT, $β_l=1.08(8)$~GeV$^2$ within theoretical errors, producing the universal RT.

We discuss the electroproduction of pseudoscalar ($0^{-+}$) or scalar ($0^{++}$) meson production off the scalar target. The most general formulation of the differential cross section for the $0^{-+}$ or $0^{++}$ meson production process involves only one or two hadronic form factors, respectively, on a scalar target. The Rosenbluth-type separation of the differential cross section provides the explicit relation between the hadronic form factors and the different parts of the differential cross section in a completely model-independent manner. The absence of the beam spin asymmetry for the pseudoscalar meson production provides a benchmark for the experimental data analysis. The measurement of the beam spin asymmetry for the scalar meson production may also provide a unique opportunity not only to explore the imaginary part of the hadronic amplitude in the general formulation but also to examine the significance of the chiral-odd generalized parton distribution (GPD) contribution in the leading-twist GPD formulation.

It is shown that two physical phenomena are important for high excitations: (i) the screening of the universal gluon-exchange potential and (ii) the flattening of the confining potential owing to creation of quark loops, and both effects are determined quantitatively. Taking the first effect into account, we predict the masses of the ground states with $l=0,1,2$ in agreement with experiment. The flattening effect ensures the observed linear behaviour of the radial Regge trajectories $M^2(n)=m_0^2 + n_r μ^2$ GeV$^2$, where the slope $μ^2$ is very sensitive to the parameter $γ$, which determines the weakening of the string tension $σ(r)$ at large distances. For the $ρ$-trajectory the linear behaviour starts with $n_r=1$ and the values $μ^2=1.40(2)$~GeV$^2$ for $γ=0.40$ and $μ^2=1.34(1)$~GeV$^2$ for $γ=0.45$ are obtained. For the excited states the leptonic widths: $Γ_{\rm ee}(ρ(775))=7.0(3)$~keV, $Γ_{\rm ee}(ρ(1450))=1.7(1)$~keV, $Γ_{\rm ee}(ρ(1900))=1.0(1)$~keV, $Γ_{\rm ee}(ρ(2150))=0.7(1)$~keV, and $Γ_{\rm ee}(1\,{}^3D_1)=0.26(5)$~keV are calculated, if these states are considered as purely $q\bar q$ states. The width $Γ_{\rm ee}(ρ(1700))$ increases if $ρ(1700)$ is mixed with the $2\,{}^3S_1$ state, giving for a mixing angle $θ=21^\circ$ almost equal widths: $Γ_{\rm ee}(ρ(1700))=0.75(6)$~keV and $Γ_{\rm ee}(1450)=1.0(1)$~keV.

In SCA the transition rate $\tildeΓ_2=Γ(2\,{}^3P_1 \rightarrow ψγ)=71.8$~keV and large $\tildeΓ_1=Γ(2\,{}^3P_1\rightarrow J/ψγ)=85.4$~keV are obtained, giving for their ratio the value $\tilde{R_{ψγ}}=\frac{\tildeΓ_2}{\tildeΓ_1}=0.84$. In the CC approach three factors are shown to be equally important. First, the admixture of the $1\,{}^3P_1$ component in the normalized wave function of $X(3872)$ due to the CC effects. Its weight $c_{\rm X}(E_{\rm R})=0.200\pm 0.015$ is calculated. Secondly, the use of the multipole function $g(r)$ instead of $r$ in the overlap integrals, determining the partial widths. Thirdly, the choice of the gluon-exchange interaction for $X(3872)$, as well as for other states above threshold. If for $X(3872)$ the gluon-exchange potential is taken the same as for low-lying charmonium states, then in the CC approach $Γ_1= Γ(X(3872)\rightarrow J/ψγ) \sim 3$~keV is very small, giving the large ratio $R_{ψγ}=\frac{\mathcal{B}(X(3872)\rightarrow ψ(2S)γ)}{\mathcal{B}(X(3872)\rightarrow J/ψγ)}\gg 1.0$. Arguments are presented why the gluon-exchange interaction may be suppressed for $X(3872)$ and in this case $Γ_1=42.7$~keV, $Γ_2= 70.5$~keV, and $R_{ψγ}=1.65$ are predicted for the minimal value $c_{\rm X}({\rm min})=0.185$, while for the maximal value $c_{\rm X}=0.215$ we obtained $Γ_1=30.8$~keV, $Γ_2=73.2$~keV, and $R_{ψγ}=2.38$, which agrees with the LHCb data.

The vector couplings $α_{\rm V}(r)$ in the static potential and $α_{\rm F}(r)$ in the static force, as well as the characteristic scales, $r_1(n_f=3)$ and $r_0(n_f=3)$, are calculated and compared to lattice data. The result $r_0Λ_{\bar{\rm MS}}(n_f=3)=0.77\pm 0.03$, which agrees with the lattice data, is obtained for $M_{\rm B}=(1.15\pm 0.02)$ GeV. However, better agreement with the bottomonium spectrum is reached for a smaller $Λ_{\bar{\rm MS}}(n_f=3)=(325\pm 15)$ MeV and the frozen value of $α_V=0.57\pm 0.02$. The mass splittings $\bar M(1D)-\bar M(1P)$ and $\bar M(2P)-\bar M(1P)$ are shown to be sensitive to the IR regulator used. The masses $M(1\,^3D_3)=10169(2)$ MeV and $M(1\,^3D_1)=10155(3)$ MeV are predicted.

Although rare, collisions of two or more bodies in the N-body problem are apparent obstacles at which Newton's Law of Gravity ceases to make sense. Without understanding the nature of collisions, a complete understanding of the N-body problem can not be achieved. Historically, several methods have been developed to probe the nature of collisions in the N-body problem. One of these methods removes, or regularizes, certain types of collisions entirely, thereby relating not only analytically, but also numerically, the dynamics of such collision motions with their near collision motions. By understanding the dynamics of collision motions in the regularized setting, a better understanding of the dynamics of near-collision motions is achieved.

Firstly, the spin-averaged matrix element (m.e.) $\bar{I(3S|r|1P_J)}$ is small, being equal to 0.023 GeV$^{-1}$ in our relativistic calculations. Secondly, the spin-orbit splittings produce relatively large contributions, giving $I(3S|r|1P_2)=0.066$ GeV$^{-1}$, while due to large cancellation the m.e. $I(3S|r|1P_1)=-0.020$ GeV$^{-1}$ is small and negative; at the same time the magnitude of $I(3S|r|1P_0)=-0.063$ GeV$^{-1}$ is relatively large. These m.e. give rise to the partial widths: $Γ_2(Υ(3S)\rightarrow γχ_{b2}(1P))=212$ eV, $Γ_0(Υ(3S)\rightarrow γχ_{b0}(1P))=54$ eV, which are in good agreement with the CLEO and BaBar data, and also to $Γ_1(Υ(3S)\rightarrow γχ_{b1}(1P))=13$ eV, which satisfies the BaBar limit, $Γ_1(exp.) < 22$ eV.

Within this method a sharp peak and correct mass shift of the $2 {}^3P_1$ charmonium state just to the $D^0D^{*0}$ threshold was already obtained for a prescribed channel coupling to the $DD^*$ decay channels. For the same value of coupling the normalized wave function (w.f.) of X(3872) acquires admixture of the $1 {}^3P_1$ component with the w.f. fraction $c_1=0.153 (θ=8.8^\circ$), which increases the transition rate $Γ(X(3872)\rightarrow J/ψγ)$ up to 50-70 keV, making the ratio $R=\frac{\mathcal{B}(X(3872)\rightarrow ψ^{\prime}γ)}{\mathcal{B}(X(3872)\rightarrow J/ψγ)}=0.8\pm 0.20 (th)$ significantly smaller, as compared to $R\simeq 5$ for X(3872) as a purely $2 {}^3P_1$ state.

The Peltier coefficient describes the amount of heat that is carried by an electrical current when it passes through a material. Connecting two materials with different Peltier coefficients causes a net heat flow towards or away from the interface, resulting in cooling or heating at the interface - the Peltier effect. Spintronics describes the transport of charge and angular momentum by making use of separate spin-up and spin-down channels. Recently, the merger of thermoelectricity with spintronics has given rise to a novel and rich research field named spin caloritronics. Here, we report the first direct experimental observation of refrigeration/heating driven by a spin current, a new spin thermoelectric effect which we call the spin Peltier effect. The heat flow is generated by the spin dependency of the Peltier coefficient inside the ferromagnetic material. We explored the effect in a specifically designed spin valve pillar structure by measuring the temperature using an electrically isolated thermocouple. The difference in heat flow between the two magnetic configurations leads to a change in temperature. With the help of 3-D finite element modeling, we extracted permalloy spin Peltier coefficients in the range of -0.9 to -1.3 mV. These results enable magnetic control of heat flow and provide new functionality for future spintronic devices.

Aperture arrays have been studied extensively for application in the next generation of large radio telescopes for astronomy, requiring extremely low noise performance. Prototype array systems need to demonstrate the low noise potential of aperture array technology. This paper presents noise measurements for an Aperture Array tile of 144 dual-polarized tapered slot antenna (TSA) elements, originally built and characterized for use as a Phased Array Feed for application in an L-band radio astronomical receiving system. The system noise budget is given and the dependency of the measured noise temperatures on the beam steering is discussed. A comparison is made of the measurement results with simulations of the noise behavior using a system noise model. This model includes the effect of receiver noise coupling, resulting from a changing active reflection coefficient and array noise contribution as a function of beam steering. Measurement results clearly demonstrate the validity of the model and thus the concept of active reflection coefficient for the calculation of effective system noise temperatures. The presented array noise temperatures, with a best measured value of 45 K, are state-of-the-art for room temperature aperture arrays in the 1 GHz range and illustrate their low noise potential.

We apply the symmetry reduction method of Roberts to numerically analyze the linear stability of a one-parameter family of symmetric periodic orbits with regularizable simultaneous binary collisions in the planar pairwise symmetric four-body problem with a mass $m\in(0,1]$ as the parameter. This reduces the linear stability analysis to the computation of two eigenvalues of a $3\times 3$ matrix for each $m\in(0,1]$ obtained from numerical integration of the linearized regularized equations along only the first one-eighth of each regularized periodic orbit. The results are that the family of symmetric periodic orbits with regularizable simultaneous binary collisions changes its linear stability type several times as $m$ varies over $(0,1]$, with linear instability for $m$ close or equal to 0.01, and linear stability for $m$ close or equal to 1.

An additional decrease $\sim 100$ MeV takes place if the current mass of the light (strange) quark is used in a relativistic model. For $D_s(1\,{}^3D_3)$ and $D_s(2P_1^H)$ the calculated masses agree with the experimental values for $D_s(2860)$ and $D_s(3040)$, and the masses of $D(2\,{}^1S_0)$, $D(2\,{}^3S_1)$, $D(1\,{}^3D_3)$, and $D(1D_2)$ are in agreement with the new BaBar data. For the yet undiscovered resonances we predict the masses $M(D(2\,{}^3P_2))=2965$ MeV, $M(D(2\,{}^3P_0))=2880$ MeV, $M(D(1\,{}^3F_4))=3030$ MeV, and $M(D_s(1\,{}^3F_2))=3090$ MeV. We show that for $L=2,3$ the states with $j_q=l+1/2$ and $j_q=l-1/2$ ($J=l$) are almost completely unmixed ($φ\simeq -1^\circ$), which implies that the mixing angles $θ$ between the states with S=1 and S=0 ($J=L$) are $θ\approx 40^\circ$ for L=2 and $\approx 42^\circ$ for L=3.

The setup allows users to manually thin a gold wire of several atoms in diameter while monitoring its conductance in real time. During the experiment, a characteristic step-like conductance decrease due to rearrangements of atoms in the cross-section of the wire is observed. Just before the wire breaks, a contact consisting of a single atom with a characteristic conductance close to the quantum of conductance can be maintained up to several seconds. The setup is operated full-time, needs practically no maintenance and is used on different educational levels.

For a hyperbolic toral automorphism, we construct a profinite completion of an isomorphic copy of the homoclinic group of its right action using isomorphic copies of the periodic data of its left action. The resulting profinite group has a natural module structure over a ring determined by the right action of the hyperbolic toral automorphism. This module is an invariant of conjugacy that provides means in which to characterize when two similar hyperbolic toral automorphisms are conjugate or not. In particular, this shows for two similar hyperbolic toral automorphisms with module isomorphic left action periodic data, that the homoclinic groups of their right actions play the key role in determining whether or not they are conjugate. This gives a complete set of dynamically significant invariants for the topological classification of hyperbolic toral automorphisms.

Creating, manipulating and detecting spin polarized carriers are the key elements of spin based electronics. Most practical devices use a perpendicular geometry in which the spin currents, describing the transport of spin angular momentum, are accompanied by charge currents. In recent years, new sources of pure spin currents, i.e., without charge currents, have been demonstrated and applied. In this paper, we demonstrate a conceptually new source of pure spin current driven by the flow of heat across a ferromagnetic/non-magnetic metal (FM/NM) interface. This spin current is generated because the Seebeck coefficient, which describes the generation of a voltage as a result of a temperature gradient, is spin dependent in a ferromagnet. For a detailed study of this new source of spins, it is measured in a non-local lateral geometry. We developed a 3D model that describes the heat, charge and spin transport in this geometry which allows us to quantify this process. We obtain a spin Seebeck coefficient for Permalloy of -3.8 microvolt/Kelvin demonstrating that thermally driven spin injection is a feasible alternative for electrical spin injection in, for example, spin transfer torque experiments.

We have experimentally studied the role of thermoelectric effects in nanoscale nonlocal spin valve devices. A finite element thermoelectric model is developed to calculate the generated Seebeck voltages due to Peltier and Joule heating in the devices. By measuring the first, second and third harmonic voltage response non locally, the model is experimentally examined. The results indicate that the combination of Peltier and Seebeck effects contributes significantly to the nonlocal baseline resistance. Moreover, we found that the second and third harmonic response signals can be attributed to Joule heating and temperature dependencies of both Seebeck coefficient and resistivity.

We extend our previous analytic existence of a symmetric periodic simultaneous binary collision orbit in a regularized fully symmetric equal mass four-body problem to the analytic existence of a symmetric periodic simultaneous binary collision orbit in a regularized planar pairwise symmetric equal mass four-body problem. We then use a continuation method to numerically find symmetric periodic simultaneous binary collision orbits in a regularized planar pairwise symmetric 1, m, 1, m four-body problem for $m$ between 0 and 1. Numerical estimates of the the characteristic multipliers show that these periodic orbits are linearly stability when $0.54\leq m\leq 1$, and are linearly unstable when $0<m\leq0.53$.

The aim of Apertif is to increase the instantaneous field of view of the WSRT by a factor of 37 and its observing bandwidth to 300 MHz with high spectral resolution. This system will turn the WSRT into an effective survey telescope with scientific applications such as deep imaging surveys of the northern sky of HI and OH emission, of the polarised continuum and efficient searches for pulsars and transients. Such surveys will detect the HI in more than 100,000 galaxies out to z = 0.4, will allow to determine the detailed structure of the magnetic field of the Galaxy, and will discover more than 1,000 pulsars. We present experimental results obtained with a prototype FPA installed in one of the WSRT dishes. These results demonstrate that FPAs do have the performance that is required to make all these surveys possible.

Abstract:
A universal description of the hyperfine splittings (HFS) in bottomonium and the $B_q (q=n,s,c)$ mesons is obtained with a universal strong coupling constant $α_s(μ)=0.305(2)$ in a spin-spin potential. Other characteristics are calculated within the Field Correlator Method, taking the freezing value of the strong coupling independent of $n_f$. The HFS $M(B^*)- M(B)=45.3(3)$ MeV, $M(B_s^*) - M(B_s)=46.5(3)$ MeV are obtained in full agreement with experiment both for $n_f=3$ and $n_f=4$. In bottomonium, $M(Υ(9460))- M(η_b)=70.0(4)$ MeV for $n_f=5$ agrees with the BaBar data, while a smaller HFS, equal to 64(1) MeV, is obtained for $n_f=4$. We predict HFS $M(Υ(2S))-M(η_b(2S))=36(1)$ MeV, $M(Υ(3S))- M(η(3S))=27(1)$ MeV, and $M(B_c^*) - M(B_c)= 57.5(10)$ MeV, which gives $M(B_c^*)=6334(1)$ MeV, $M(B_c(2 {}^1S_0))=6865(5)$ MeV, and $M(B_c^*(2S {}^3S_1))=6901(5)$ MeV.

Abstract:
We apply the analytic-numerical method of Roberts to determine the linear stability of time-reversible periodic simultaneous binary collision orbits in the symmetric collinear four body problem with masses 1, m, m, 1, and also in a symmetric planar four-body problem with equal masses. For the collinear problem, this verifies the earlier numerical results of Sweatman for linear stability.

Abstract:
The dielectron widths of $Υ(nS) (n=1,...,7)$ and vector decay constants are calculated using the Relativistic String Hamiltonian with a universal interaction. For $Υ(nS) (n=1,2,3)$ the dielectron widths and their ratios are obtained in full agreement with the latest CLEO data. For $Υ(nS) (n=1,2,3)$ the dielectron widths and their ratios are obtained in full agreement with the latest CLEO data. For $Υ(10580)$ and $Υ(11020)$ a good agreement with experiment is reached only if the 4S--3D mixing (with a mixing angle $θ=27^\circ\pm 4^\circ$) and 6S--5D mixing (with $θ=40^\circ\pm 5^\circ$) are taken into account. The possibility to observe higher "mixed $D$-wave" resonances, $\tildeΥ(n {}^3D_1)$ with $n=3,4,5$ is discussed. In particular, $\tildeΥ(\approx 11120)$, originating from the pure $5 {}^3D_1$ state, can acquire a rather large dielectron width, $\sim 130$ eV, so that this resonance may become manifest in the $e^+e^-$ experiments. On the contrary, the widths of pure $D$-wave states are very small, $Γ_{ee}(n{}^3 D_1) \leq 2$ eV.

On the possibility to observe higher $n^3D_1$ bottomonium states in the $e^+e^-$ processes

Abstract:
The possibility to observe new bottomonium states with $J^{PC}= 1^{--}$ in the region $10.7-11.1$ GeV is discussed. The analysis of the di-electron widths shows that the $(n+1)^3S_1$ and $n^3D_1$ states ($n\geq 3$) may be mixed with a rather large mixing angle, $θ\sim30^\circ$ and this effect provides the correct values of $Γ_{ee}(Υ(10580))$ and $Γ_{ee}(Υ(11020))$. On the other hand, the $S-D$ m…

On the other hand, the $S-D$ mixing gives rise to an increase by two orders of magnitude of the di-electron widths of the mixed $\tildeΥ(n^3D_1$) resonances ($n=3,4,5$), which originate from pure $D-$wave states. The value $Γ_{ee}(\tildeΥ(3D))=0.095^{+0.028}_{-0.025}$ keV is obtained, being only $\sim 3$ times smaller than the di-electron width of $Υ(10580)$, while $Γ_{ee}(\tildeΥ(5D))\sim 135$ eV appears to be close to $Γ_{ee}(Υ(11020))$ and therefore this resonance may become manifest in the $e^+e^-$ experiments. The mass differences between $M(nD)$ and $M((n+1)S) (n=4,5)$ are shown to be rather small, $50\pm 10$ MeV.

Surprisingly, there is little understanding on the mechanical details of the bridge formation process and specifically on the role that the dithiol molecules play themselves. We propose that alkanedithiol molecules have already formed bridges between the gold electrodes before the atomic gold-gold junction is broken. This leads to stabilization of the single atomic gold junction, as observed experimentally. Our data can be understood within a simple spring model.

We find that the density of Nambu monopoles cannot be predicted by the choice of the initial parameters of Electroweak theory and should be considered as the new external parameter of the theory. We also investigate the difference between the versions of Electroweak theory with the gauge groups $SU(2)\otimes U(1)$ and $SU(2)\otimes U(1)/Z_2$. We do not detect any difference at $α\sim {1/128}$. However, such a difference appears in the unphysical region of large coupling constant $α> 0.1$.
