For $q$ a power of a prime $p$, we study gamma factors of representations of $GL_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of positive characteristic $\ell \neq p$. We show that the reduction mod $\ell$ of the gamma factor defined in characteristic zero fails to satisfy the analogue of the local converse theorem of Piatetski-Shapiro. To remedy this, we construct gamma factors valued in arbitrary $\mathbb{Z}[1/p, ζ_p]$-algebras $A$, where $ζ_p$ is a primitive $p$-th root of unity, for Whittaker-type representations $ρ$ and $π$ of $GL_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$ and $GL_m(\mathbb{F}_q)$ over $A$. We let $P(π)$ be the projective envelope of $π$ and let $R(π)$ be its endomorphism ring and define new gamma factors $\widetildeγ(ρ\times π) = γ((ρ\otimes_kR(π)) \times P(π))$, which take values in the local Artinian $k$-algebra $R(π)$. We prove a converse theorem for cuspidal representations using the new gamma factors. When $n=2$ and $m=1$ we construct a different ``new'' gamma factor $γ^{\ell}(ρ,π)$, which takes values in $k$ and satisfies a converse theorem.

In this article, we revisit some aspects of the computation of the cohomology class of $H^2 ( \text{Witt}, \mathbb{C})$ using some methods in two-dimensional conformal field theory and conformal algebra to obtain the one-dimensional central extension of the Witt algebra to the Virasoro algebra. Even though this is well-known in the context of standard mathematical physics literature, the operator product expansion of the energy-momentum tensor in two-dimensional conformal field theory is presented almost axiomatically. In this paper, we attempt to reformulate it with the help of a suitable modification of conformal algebra (as developed by V. Kac), and apply it to compute the representative element of the cohomology class which gives the desired central extension. This paper was written in the scope of an undergraduate's exploration of conformal field theory and his attempt to gain insight on the subject from a mathematical perspective.
