Power systems are currently experiencing a transition towards decarbonisation of electrical generation through large-scale deployment of renewable energy sources. These are gradually replacing conventional thermal power plants which today are the main providers of black start (BS) services. Consequently, in case of a total/partial blackout, conventional black-start resources are not ready for operation. Offshore wind farms (OWFs), with their large capacity and fast controllers, have potential as novel BS units. This new service introduces a need for a new design for wind power systems to be able to fulfil the black start requirements for non-traditional generation units. In this paper, challenges, and possible solutions in integrating BS services into OWFs will be presented. A first challenge is represented by the implementation of a BS unit. The BS unit should be capable of firstly forming the wind farm power island and withstanding transient phenomena due to energisation. There could be several different solutions, e.g., the integration of grid-forming converters in the wind farm design which could be battery energy storage systems (BESSs). In this paper, specific challenges are analysed using simulations on a wind farm equipped with a grid-forming BESS, and the proposed solutions discussed. It can be concluded that a hybrid system comprised of a BESS and an OWF, in combination with novel technologies such as grid-forming control, soft-charging, etc. represents a feasible proposal for being able to provide BS services with OWFs.

It is well known that closed-form analytical solutions for AC power flow equations do not exist in general. This paper proposes a multi-dimensional holomorphic embedding method (MDHEM) to obtain an explicit approximate analytical AC power-flow solution by finding a physical germ solution and arbitrarily embedding each power, each load or groups of loads with respective scales. Based on the MDHEM, the complete approximate analytical solutions to the power flow equations in the high-dimensional space become achievable, since the voltage vector of each bus can be explicitly expressed by a convergent multivariate power series of all the loads. Unlike the traditional iterative methods for power flow calculation and inaccurate sensitivity analysis method for voltage control, the algebraic variables of a power system in all operating conditions can be prepared offline and evaluated online by only plugging in the values of any operating conditions into the scales of the non-linear multivariate power series. Case studies implemented on the 4-bus test system and the IEEE 14-bus standard system confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper proposes an online steady-state voltage stability assessment scheme to evaluate the proximity to voltage collapse at each bus of a load area. Using a non-iterative holomorphic embedding method (HEM) with a proposed physical germ solution, an accurate loading limit at each load bus can be calculated based on online state estimation on the entire load area and a measurement-based equivalent for the external system. The HEM employs a power series to calculate an accurate Power-Voltage (P-V) curve at each load bus and accordingly evaluates the voltage stability margin considering load variations in the next period. An adaptive two-stage Pade approximants method is proposed to improve the convergence of the power series for accurate determination of the nose point on the P-V curve with moderate computational burden. The proposed method is illustrated in detail on a 4-bus test system and then demonstrated on a load area of the Northeast Power Coordinating Council (NPCC) 48-geneartor, 140-bus power system.

Abstract:
This paper addresses harmonic magnification due to resonance circuits resulting from interaction between uncertain grid impedance and converter. The source of harmonic may be either the grid or inverter. It is demonstrated that unknown and unpredictable grid impedance may result in variable resonance frequency, which challenges robust design of LCL filter of inverter.

Load shedding is the last and most expensive control action against system collapse and blackout. Achievement of an efficient emergency control to stabilize the power system following severe disturbances, requires two key objectives. First, preventing of further cascading outages, i.e. saving the available and determinant power system elements and second, issuing proper control actions to stabilize the power system inside the permissible time frame. In this paper online contingency analysis is performed to monitor secure and reliable operation of transmission lines. Load shedding locations are continuously updated based on loading rate/thermal limit of lines to prevent their outage. Simulation of severe contingencies carried out on 39 bus IEEE standard test system in DIgSILENT power-factory validates the efficiency of proposed method.
