By creating line-by-line radiative transfer models with the latest improved spectral line data for ammonia and methane (HITRAN2016), we derive best models of cloud/haze parameters in Jupiter's South Equatorial Belt. The modelled spectra fit the observations well except for small, isolated discrepancies in the trough region of H2-H2 collision-induced-absorption around 2.08 μm and the methane absorption level between 2.16 and 2.19 μm in K band and at the high pressure methane window between 1.596 to 1.618 μm in H band.

Transmission of highly infectious respiratory diseases, including SARS-CoV-2 are facilitated by the transport of tiny droplets and aerosols (harboring viruses, bacteria, etc.) that are breathed out by individuals and can remain suspended in air for extended periods of time in confined environments. A passenger car cabin represents one such situation in which there exists an elevated risk of pathogen transmission. Here we present results from numerical simulations of the potential routes of airborne transmission within a model car geometry, for a variety of ventilation configurations representing different combinations of open and closed windows. We estimate relative concentrations and residence times of a non-interacting, passive scalar -- a proxy for infectious pathogenic particles -- that are advected and diffused by the turbulent airflows inside the cabin. Our findings reveal that creating an airflow pattern that travels across the cabin, entering and existing farthest from the occupants can potentially reduce the transmission.

It is highly desirable to use the Oktay-Kronfeld (OK) action for the form factor calculation on the lattice, since the OK action is designed to reduce the heavy quark discretization error down to the $\mathcal{O}(λ^4)$ level in the power counting rules of the heavy quark effective theory (HQET).
Here, we present a matching calculation to improve heavy-heavy and heavy-light currents up to the $λ^3$ order in HQET, the same level of improvement as the OK action. Our final results for the improved currents are being used in a lattice QCD calculation of the semi-leptonic form factors for the $\bar{B} \to D^\ast \ell \barν$ and $\bar{B} \to D \ell \barν$ decays.

This tension is highly correlated with the present discrepancy between the exclusive and inclusive values of $|V_{cb}|$. In order to resolve, in part, the issue with $|V_{cb}|$, it would be highly desirable to have a comprehensive re-analysis over the entire set of experimental data on the $\bar{B} \to D^* \ell \barν$ decays using an alternative parametrization of the form factors, such as the BGL parametrization, and a comparison with results of the CLN method.

At the intermediate lattice spacing, the ratio $m'_l/m'_s$ ranges from 0.05 to 0.2. The valence $b$ quark is treated using the Sheikholeslami-Wohlert Wilson-clover action with the Fermilab interpretation. The other valence quarks use the asqtad action. When combined with (future) measurements from the LHCb and Belle II experiments, these calculations will provide an alternate determination of the CKM matrix element $|V_{ub}|$.

The Oktay-Kronfeld (OK) action extends the Fermilab improvement program for massive Wilson fermions to higher order in suitable power-counting schemes. It includes dimension-six and -seven operators necessary for matching to QCD through order ${\mathrm{O}}(Λ^3/m_Q^3)$ in HQET power counting, for applications to heavy-light systems, and ${\mathrm{O}}(v^6)$ in NRQCD power counting, for applications to quarkonia. In the Symanzik power counting of lattice gauge theory near the continuum limit, the OK action includes all ${\mathrm{O}}(a^2)$ and some ${\mathrm{O}}(a^3)$ terms. To assess whether the theoretical improvement is realized in practice, we study combinations of heavy-strange and quarkonia masses and mass splittings, designed to isolate heavy-quark discretization effects. We find that, with one exception, the results obtained with the tree-level-matched OK action are significantly closer to the continuum limit than the results obtained with the Fermilab action. The exception is the hyperfine splitting of the bottom-strange system, for which our statistical errors are too large to draw a firm conclusion. These studies are carried out with data generated with the tadpole-improved Fermilab and OK actions on 500 gauge configurations from one of MILC's $a\approx0.12$~fm, $N_f=2+1$-flavor, asqtad-staggered ensembles.

We present updated results of a numerical improvement test with heavy-meson spectrum for the Oktay--Kronfeld (OK) action. The OK action is an extension of the Fermilab improvement program for massive Wilson fermions including all dimension-six and some dimension-seven bilinear terms. Improvement terms are truncated by HQET power counting at $\mathrm{O}(Λ^3/m_Q^3)$ for heavy-light systems, and by NRQCD power counting at $\mathrm{O}(v^6)$ for quarkonium. They suffice for tree-level matching to QCD to the given order in the power-counting schemes. To assess the improvement, we generate new data with the OK and Fermilab action that covers both charm and bottom quark mass regions on a MILC coarse $(a \approx 0.12~\text{fm})$ $2+1$ flavor, asqtad-staggered ensemble. We update the analyses of the inconsistency quantity and the hyperfine splittings for the rest and kinetic masses. With one exception, the results clearly show that the OK action significantly reduces heavy-quark discretization effects in the meson spectrum. The exception is the hyperfine splitting of the heavy-light system near the $B_s$ meson mass, where statistics are too low to draw a firm conclusion, despite promising results.

We use the RBC-UKQCD result for $ξ_0$ determined using the experimental value of $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ and the lattice result of $\mathrm{Im}\,A_2$. To set the Wolfenstein parameter $λ$, we use $|V_{us}|$, which is determined from $K_{\ell3}$ and $K_{\mu2}$ decays combined with lattice evaluations of the $K \to π\ell ν$ vector form factor and $f_K$. To set the Wolfenstein parameter $A$, we use the FNAL/MILC results for $|V_{cb}|$, which are determined from the exclusive decay $\bar{B} \to D^* \ell \barν$ and the axial form factor at zero recoil. We also use the inclusive $|V_{cb}|$ obtained using the heavy quark expansion based on QCD sum rules and the OPE. We compare the results with those for exclusive $|V_{cb}|$. We find that the standard model prediction of $\varepsilon_K$ with exclusive $|V_{cb}|$ (lattice QCD results) is lower than the experimental value by 3.4$σ$. The ensembles span lattice spacings from 0.12 to 0.045 fm and have multiple sea-quark masses to help control the chiral extrapolation. The asqtad improved staggered action is used for the light valence and sea quarks, and the clover action with the Fermilab interpretation is used for the heavy $b$ quark. We present results for the form factors $f_+(q^2)$, $f_0(q^2)$, and $f_T(q^2)$, where $q^2$ is the momentum transfer, together with a comprehensive examination of systematic errors. Lattice QCD determines the form factors for a limited range of $q^2$, and we use the model-independent $z$ expansion to cover the whole kinematically allowed range. We present our final form-factor results as coefficients of the $z$ expansion and the correlations between them, where the errors on the coefficients include statistical and all systematic uncertainties. We use this complete description of the form factors to test QCD predictions of the form factors at high and low $q^2$. We also compare a Standard-Model calculation of the branching ratio for $B \to Kl^+l^-$ with experimental data.

Lattice QCD calculations with different staggered valence and sea quarks can be used to improve determinations of quark masses, Gasser-Leutwyler couplings, and other parameters relevant to phenomenology. We calculate the masses and decay constants of flavored pions and kaons through next-to-leading order in staggered-valence, staggered-sea mixed-action chiral perturbation theory. We present the results in the valence-valence and valence-sea sectors, for all tastes. As in unmixed theories, the taste-pseudoscalar, valence-valence mesons are exact Goldstone bosons in the chiral limit, at non-zero lattice spacing. The results reduce correctly when the valence and sea quark actions are identical, connect smoothly to the continuum limit, and provide a way to control light quark and gluon discretization errors in lattice calculations performed with different staggered actions for the valence and sea quarks.

We present a lattice-QCD calculation of the $B\toπ\ellν$ semileptonic form factors and a new determination of the CKM matrix element $|V_{ub}|$. We use the MILC asqtad 2+1-flavor lattice configurations at four lattice spacings and light-quark masses down to 1/20 of the physical strange-quark mass. We extrapolate the lattice form factors to the continuum using staggered chiral perturbation theory in the hard-pion and SU(2) limits. We employ a model-independent $z$ parameterization to extrapolate our lattice form factors from large-recoil momentum to the full kinematic range. We introduce a new functional method to propagate information from the chiral-continuum extrapolation to the $z$ expansion. We present our results together with a complete systematic error budget, including a covariance matrix to enable the combination of our form factors with other lattice-QCD and experimental results. To obtain $|V_{ub}|$, we simultaneously fit the experimental data for the $B\toπ\ellν$ differential decay rate obtained by the BaBar and Belle collaborations together with our lattice form-factor results. We find $|V_{ub}|=(3.72\pm 0.16)\times 10^{-3}$ where the error is from the combined fit to lattice plus experiments and includes all sources of uncertainty. Our form-factor results bring the QCD error on $|V_{ub}|$ to the same level as the experimental error. We also provide results for the $B\toπ\ellν$ vector and scalar form factors obtained from the combined lattice and experiment fit, which are more precisely-determined than from our lattice-QCD calculation alone. These results can be used in other phenomenological applications and to test other approaches to QCD.

We present the first unquenched lattice-QCD calculation of the hadronic form factors for the exclusive decay $\overline{B} \rightarrow D \ell \overlineν$ at nonzero recoil. We carry out numerical simulations on fourteen ensembles of gauge-field configurations generated with 2+1 flavors of asqtad-improved staggered sea quarks. The ensembles encompass a wide range of lattice spacings (approximately 0.045 to 0.12 fm) and ratios of light (up and down) to strange sea-quark masses ranging from 0.05 to 0.4. For the $b$ and $c$ valence quarks we use improved Wilson fermions with the Fermilab interpretation, while for the light valence quarks we use asqtad-improved staggered fermions. We extrapolate our results to the physical point using rooted staggered heavy-light meson chiral perturbation theory. We then parameterize the form factors and extend them to the full kinematic range using model-independent functions based on analyticity and unitarity. We present our final results for $f_+(q^2)$ and $f_0(q^2)$, including statistical and systematic errors, as coefficients of a series in the variable $z$ and the covariance matrix between these coefficients. We then fit the lattice form-factor data jointly with the experimentally measured differential decay rate from BaBar to determine the CKM matrix element, $|V_{cb}|=(39.6 \pm 1.7_{\rm QCD+exp} \pm 0.2_{\rm QED})\times 10^{-3}$. As a byproduct of the joint fit we obtain the form factors with improved precision at large recoil. Finally, we use them to update our calculation of the ratio $R(D)$ in the Standard Model, which yields $R(D) = 0.299(11)$.

For the central value, we take the angle-only fit of the UTfit collaboration, and use $|V_{us}|$ from the $K_{\ell 3}$ and $K_{μ2}$ decays as an independent input to fix $λ$. For the error estimate, we use results of the global unitarity triangle fits from the CKMfitter and UTfit collaborations. We find that the Standard Model (SM) prediction of $\varepsilon_K$ with exclusive $V_{cb}$ (lattice QCD results) is lower than the experimental value by $3.6(2)σ$. However, with inclusive $V_{cb}$ (results of the heavy quark expansion), the tension between the SM prediction of $\varepsilon_K$ and its experimental value disappears.

The theoretical expression for $\varepsilon_K$ is thoroughly reviewed to give an estimate of the size of the neglected corrections, including long distance effects. The Wolfenstein parametrization $(|V_{cb}|, λ, \barρ, \barη)$ is adopted for CKM matrix elements which enter through the short distance contribution of the box diagrams. For the central value, we take the Unitarity Triangle apex $(\barρ, \barη)$ from the angle-only fit of the UTfit collaboration and use $V_{us}$ as an independent input to fix $λ$. We find that the Standard Model prediction of $\varepsilon_K$ with exclusive $V_{cb}$ (lattice QCD results) is lower than the experimental value by $3.4σ$. However, with inclusive $V_{cb}$ (results of the heavy quark expansion), there is no gap between the Standard Model prediction of $\varepsilon_K$ and its experimental value. For the calculation of $\varepsilon_K$, we perform the renormalization group running to obtain $η_{cc}$ at next-to-next-to-leading-order; we find $η_{cc}^\mathrm{NNLO}=1.72(27)$.

We use the MILC asqtad ensembles with $N_f=2+1$ sea quarks at four different lattice spacings in the range $a \approx 0.045$~fm to $0.12$~fm. The lattice form factors are extrapolated to the continuum limit using SU(2) staggered chiral perturbation theory in the hard pion limit, followed by an extrapolation in $q^2$ to the full kinematic range using a functional $z$-parameterization. The extrapolation is combined with the experimental measurements of the partial branching fraction to extract $|V_{ub}|$. Our preliminary result is $|V_{ub}|=(3.72\pm 0.14)\times 10^{-3}$, where the error reflects both the lattice and experimental uncertainties, which are now on par with each other.

While successful, the precision of this approach has been limited by heavy-quark discretization effects. An improved version of the Fermilab action, the Oktay-Kronfeld action, can be used to reduce heavy-quark discretization effects in calculations performed at the physical bottom and charm quark masses. Treating charm and bottom quarks as massive, we are carrying out improvement of the flavor-changing currents through third order in the momentum (HQET) expansion.

We present heavy-meson spectrum results obtained using the Oktay--Kronfeld (OK) action on MILC asqtad lattices. The OK action was designed to improve the heavy-quark action of the Fermilab formulation, such that heavy-quark discretization errors are reduced. The OK action includes dimension-6 and -7 operators necessary for tree-level matching to QCD through order $\mathrm{O}(Λ^3/m_Q^3)$ for heavy-light mesons and $\mathrm{O}(v^6)$ for quarkonium, or, equivalently, through $\mathrm{O}(a^2)$ with some $\mathrm{O}(a^3)$ terms with Symanzik power counting. To assess the improvement, we extend previous numerical tests with heavy-meson masses by analyzing data generated on a finer ($a \approx 0.12\;$fm) lattice with the correct tadpole factors for the $c_5$ term in the action. We update the analyses of the inconsistency parameter and the hyperfine splittings for the rest and kinetic masses.

We use an improved staggered action for the light valence and sea quarks (the MILC \asqtad\ configurations), and the Fermilab action for the heavy quarks. Our calculations incorporate higher statistics, finer lattice spacings, and lighter quark masses than our 2008 work. As a byproduct of tuning the new data set, we obtain the $D_s$ and $B_s$ hyperfine splittings with few-MeV accuracy. For the zero-recoil form factor, we obtain $\mathcal{F}(1)=0.906(4)(12)$, where the first error is statistical and the second is the sum in quadrature of all systematic errors. With the latest HFAG average of experimental results and a cautious treatment of QED effects, we find $|V_{cb}| = (39.04 \pm 0.49_\text{expt} \pm 0.53_\text{QCD} \pm 0.19_\text{QED})\times10^{-3}$. The QCD error is now commensurate with the experimental error.

We calculate the next-to-leading order loop diagrams contributing to the masses and decay constants of the flavored pseudo-Goldstone bosons of all tastes and here report results for the decay constants and valence-valence masses.

We have optimized the bi-stabilized conjugate gradient inverter in the SciDAC QOPQDP library and are develo** a GPU code. The action is rewritten and the needed gauge-link combinations are precalculated. In tests with a MILC coarse lattice, this procedure accelerates the inverter by a factor of four. The remaining floating-point operations are mostly simple matrix multiplications between gauge links and fermion vectors, which we accelerate by more than an order of magnitude by using CUDA. Further gains could be achieved by using QUDA.

We present a study of water vapour in the Venus troposphere obtained by modelling specific water vapour absorption bands within the 1.18 μm window. We compare the results with the normal technique of obtaining the abundance by matching the peak of the 1.18 μm window. Ground-based infrared imaging spectroscopy of the night side of Venus was obtained with the Anglo-Australian Telescope and IRIS2 instrument with a spectral resolving power of R ~ 2400. The spectra have been fitted with modelled spectra simulated using the radiative transfer model VSTAR. We find a best fit abundance of 31 ppmv (-6 + 9 ppmv), which is in agreement with recent results by Bézard et al. 2011 using VEX/SPICAV (R ~ 1700) and contrary to prior results by Bézard et al. 2009 of 44 ppmv (+/-9 ppmv) using VEX/VIRTIS-M (R ~ 200) data analyses. Comparison studies are made between water vapour abundances determined from the peak of the 1.18 μm window and abundances determined from different water vapour absorption features within the near infrared window. We find that water vapour abundances determined over the peak of the 1.18 μm window results in plots with less scatter than those of the individual water vapour features and that analyses conducted over some individual water vapour features are more sensitive to variation in water vapour than those over the peak of the 1.18 μm window. No evidence for horizontal spatial variations across the night side of the disk are found within the limits of our data with the exception of a possible small decrease in water vapour from the equator to the north pole. We present spectral ratios that show water vapour absorption from within the lowest 4 km of the Venus atmosphere only, and discuss the possible existence of a decreasing water vapour concentration towards the surface.

Operator matching is done using perturbative matching at one-loop order, and results are run to 2 or 3 GeV using two-loop running in the MS-bar scheme. For the chiral and continuum extrapolations, we use SU(2) staggered chiral perturbation theory. We present preliminary results with only statistical errors.

Models of new physics induce K_0-K_0bar mixing through operators having Dirac structures other than the "left-left" form of the Standard Model. To carry out the chiral-continuum extrapolation of results from numerical simulations, one needs to know the quark mass and lattice spacing dependence of the corresponding B-parameters in the partially quenched theory at least at next-to-leading order. For simulations using staggered fermions (such as that we are doing with HYP-smeared valence fermions on the MILC asqtad lattices) one must determine this dependence using staggered chiral perturbation theory (SChPT). We have calculated the required dependence in both SU(3) and SU(2) SChPT, working at next-to-leading order, and we give here an overview of the methodology and results. The SU(3) SChPT result turns out to be much simpler than that for the Standard Model B_K operator, due to the absence of chiral suppression for the new operators. The SU(2) SChPT result turns out to be closely related to that for B_K: the chiral logarithms are identical, up to an operator-dependent sign. Our results are also useful for fermions with chiral symmetry as they provide, in the continuum limit, the partially quenched generalization of existing continuum results.

The semileptonic decay channel B -> D tau nu is sensitive to the presence of a scalar current, such as that mediated by a charged-Higgs boson. Recently the BaBar experiment reported the first observation of the exclusive semileptonic decay B -> D tau nu, finding an approximately 2-sigma disagreement with the Standard-Model prediction for the ratio R(D)=BR(B->D tau nu)/BR(B->D l nu), where l=e,mu. We compute this ratio of branching fractions using hadronic form factors computed in unquenched lattice QCD and obtain R(D) = 0.316(12)(7), where the errors are statistical and total systematic, respectively. This result is the first Standard-Model calculation of R(D) from ab initio full QCD. Its error is smaller than that of previous estimates, primarily due to the reduced uncertainty in the scalar form factor f_0(q^2). Our determination of R(D) is approximately 1-sigma higher than previous estimates and, thus, reduces the tension with experiment. We also compute R(D) in models with electrically charged scalar exchange, such as the type II two-Higgs doublet model. Once again, our result is consistent with, but approximately 1-sigma higher than, previous estimates for phenomenologically relevant values of the scalar coupling in the type II model. As a byproduct of our calculation, we also present the Standard-Model prediction for the longitudinal polarization ratio P_L (D)= 0.325(4)(3).

We calculate form-factor ratios between the semileptonic decays \bar{B}->D^+\ell^-\barν and \bar{B}_s->D_s^+\ell^-\barν with lattice QCD. These ratios are a key theoretical input in a new strategy to determine the fragmentation fractions of the neutral B decays, which are needed for measurements of BR(B^0_s-> μ^+μ^-). We use the MILC ensembles of gauge configurations with 2+1 flavors of sea quarks at two lattice spacings of approximately 0.12 fm and 0.09 fm. We use the model-independent z-parametrization to extrapolate our simulation results at small recoil toward maximum recoil. Our results for the form-factor ratios are $f_0^{(s)}(M^2_π)/f_0^{(d)}(M^2_K) =1.046(44)_{stat.}(15)_{syst.}$ and $f_0^{(s)}(M^2_π)/f_0^{(d)}(M^2_π)=1.054(47)_{stat.}(17)_{syst.}$. In contrast to a QCD sum-rule calculation, no significant departure from U-spin (d<->s) symmetry is observed.

Models of new physics induce K-Kbar mixing operators having Dirac structures other than the "left-left" form of the Standard Model. We calculate the functional form of the corresponding B-parameters at next-to-leading order in both SU(3) and SU(2) staggered chiral perturbation theory (SChPT). Numerical results for these matrix elements are being generated using improved staggered fermions; our results can be used to extrapolate these matrix elements to the physical light and strange quark masses. The SU(3) SChPT results turn out to be much simpler than that for the Standard Model B_K operator, due to the absence of chiral suppression in the new operators. The SU(2) SChPT result is of similar simplicity to that for B_K. In fact, in the latter case, the chiral logarithms for two of the new B-parameters are identical to those for B_K, while those for the other two new B-parameters are of opposite sign. In addition to providing results for the 2+1 flavor theory in SU(3) SChPT and the 1+1+1 flavor theory in SU(2) SChPT, we present the corresponding continuum partially quenched results, as these are not available in the literature.

We re-analyze 4 years of HARPS spectra of the nearby M1.5 dwarf GJ 667C available through the ESO public archive. The new radial velocity (RV) measurements were obtained using a new data analysis technique that derives the Doppler measurement and other instrumental effects using a least-squares approach. Combining these new 143 measurements with 41 additional RVs from the Magellan/PFS and Keck/HIRES spectrometers, reveals 3 additional signals beyond the previously reported 7.2-day candidate, with periods of 28 days, 75 days, and a secular trend consistent with the presence of a gas giant (Period sim 10 years). The 28-day signal implies a planet candidate with a minimum mass of 4.5 Mearth orbiting well within the canonical definition of the star's liquid water habitable zone, this is, the region around the star at which an Earth-like planet could sustain liquid water on its surface. Still, the ultimate water supporting capability of this candidate depends on properties that are unknown such as its albedo, atmospheric composition and interior dynamics. The 75-day signal is less certain, being significantly affected by aliasing interactions among a potential 91-day signal, and the likely rotation period of the star at 105 days detected in two activity indices. GJ 667C is the common proper motion companion to the GJ 667AB binary, which is metal poor compared to the Sun. The presence of a super-Earth in the habitable zone of a metal poor M dwarf in a triple star system, supports the evidence that such worlds should be ubiquitous in the Galaxy.

The expressions for the non-Goldstone masses contain low-energy couplings unique to the non-Goldstone sector. With two exceptions these enter as coefficients of analytic terms; all the new couplings can be fixed by performing spectrum calculations. We report one-loop results for the quenched case and the fully dynamical and partially quenched 1+1+1 and 2+1 flavor cases in the chiral SU(3) and SU(2) theories.
