Optically active point defects in semiconductors have received great attention in the field of solid-state quantum technologies. Hexagonal boron nitride, with an ultra-wide band gap E_g = 6 eV, containing a negatively charged boron vacancy (V_B^-) with unique spin, optical, and coherent properties presents a new two-dimensional platform for the implementation of quantum technologies. This work establishes the value of V_B^ - spin polarization under optical pum** with λext = 532 nm laser using high-frequency (νmw = 94 GHz) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. In optimal conditions polarization was found to be P = 38.4 %. Our study reveals that Rabi oscillations induced on polarized spin states persist for up to 30-40 microseconds, which is nearly two orders of magnitude longer than what was previously reported. Analysis of the coherent electron-nuclear interaction through the observed electron spin echo envelope modulation (ESEEM) made it possible to detect signals from remote nitrogen and boron nuclei, and to establish a corresponding quadrupole coupling constant Cq = 180 kHz related to nuclear quadrupole moment of 14N. These results have fundamental importance for understanding spin properties of boron vacancy.

The spin-noise spectroscopy (SNS) method implies high efficiency of conversion of the spin-system magnetization to the Faraday rotation angle. Generally, this efficiency cannot be estimated using the characteristics of the regular magneto-optical activity of a paramagnet. However, it may be drastically enhanced in systems with strong inhomogeneous broadening of the optical transitions. This enhancement leads to the giant spin-noise gain effect and previously allowed one to apply the SNS to rare-earth-activated crystals. We show that the nonlinear resonant Faraday effect can be used to measure the homogeneous width of the inhomogeneously broadened transition and, thus, to estimate the applicability of the SNS to this type of paramagnet. We present the theoretical description of the effect and perform measurements on intraconfigurational ($4f$-$4f$) transitions of the trivalent rare-earth ions of neodymium and ytterbium in fluorite-based crystals. The proposed experimental approach establishes new links between the effects of nonlinear optics and spin-noise characteristics of crystals with paramagnetic impurities and offers new ways of research in the physics of impurity crystals.

We present the results of the quantum calculation of the ground state energies and magnetic g-factors of two rare earth (RE) ions: Yb3+ in Y2Ti2O7 crystal and Er3+ in YPO4 crystal. The Variational Quantum Eigensolver (VQE) algorithm has been performed on 5-qubit IBM superconducting quantum computer via IBM Quantum Experience cloud access. The Hamiltonian of the lowest spectroscopic multiplet of each RE ion, containing crystal field and Zeeman interaction, has been projected to the collective states of three (Yb3+) and four (Er3+) coupled transmon qubits. The lowest-energy states of RE ions have been found minimizing the mean energy in ~ 250 iterations of the algorithm: the first part performed on a quantum simulator, and the last 25 iterations - on the real quantum computing hardware. All the calculated ground-state energies and magnetic g-factors agree well with their exact values, while the estimated error of 2÷15% is mostly attributed to the decoherence associated with the two-qubit operations.

Abstract:
We study the coherence times and perform manipulations on the lowest-energy states of trivalent cerium ion in calcium tungstate crystal. We find the phase memory time reaching 14.2 $μ$s and the time of coherent manipulations reaching 0.3 $μ$s in the low-temperature limit, the latter can potentially be elongated by using the rotation angle and off-resonance error correction schemes.

We report the first observation of Rabi oscillations in the spin-7/2 ensemble of trivalent gadolinium ions hosted in CaWO$_4$ single crystal. A number of transitions within the lowest electronic multiplet $^8S_{7/2}$ of Gd$^{3+}$ ion are studied using a combination of continuous-wave and pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The corresponding Rabi dam** curves and the spin coherence times are detected at varying strengths of the microwave field. These data are well reproduced by a theoretical model which accounts for the intrinsic inhomogeneity of the microwave field within the microwave resonator and the magnetic dipole interactions in the diluted spin ensemble. The results indicate that the studied 8-level ground manifold of Gd$^{3+}$ ion can represent an effective three qubit quantum system.

We study coherent dynamics in a system of dipolar coupled spin qubits diluted in solid and subjected to a driving microwave field. In the case of rare earth ions, anisotropic crystal background results in anisotropic g tensor and thus modifies the dipolar coupling. We develop a microscopic theory of spin relaxation in transient regime for the frequently encountered case of axially symmetric crystal field. The calculated decoherence rate is nonlinear in Rabi frequency. We show that the direction of static magnetic field that corresponds to the highest spin g-factor is preferable in order to obtain higher number of coherent qubit operations. The results of calculations are in excellent agreement with our experimental data on Rabi oscillations recorded for a series of CaWO4 crystals with different concentrations of Nd3+ ions.

An ensemble of N identical noninteracting spins being in thermal equilibrium and coupled to the resonant mode of a lossless microwave cavity is studied at arbitrary temperature T. Near T = 0 the system is known to be in a coupled spin-photon state that manifests itself by the splitting of the cavity mode (vacuum Rabi splitting). The cavity emission spectrum is simulated for arbitrary T. It is shown that the spin-photon coherence can be partially preserved for T < w sqrt{N}/2, where w is the spin excitation energy, even in case when the spins are randomly directed. The calculations corroborate recent room-temperature observations of the collective coupling between the microwave cavity mode and the electron spin ensemble (NV centers in diamond, DPPH, Fe8 nanomagnets). At higher T, as a consequence of thermal excitations within the spin ensemble, the two lines of the emission spectrum merge into a narrow line with broad wings.

Decay of Rabi oscillations of equivalent spins diluted in diamagnetic solid matrix and coupled by magnetic dipole interactions is studied. It is shown that these interactions result in random shifts of spin transient nutation frequencies and thus lead to the decay of the transient signal. Averaging over random spatial distribution of spins within the solid and over their spectral positions within magnetic resonance line, we obtain analytical expressions for the decay of Rabi oscillations. The rate of the decay in the case when the half-width of magnetic resonance line exceeds Rabi frequency is found to depend on the intensity of resonant microwave field and on the spin concentration. The results are compared with the literature data for E1' centers in glassy silica and [AlO4] centers in quartz.

Rabi oscillations in the V_15 Single Molecule Magnet (SMM) embedded in the surfactant DODA have been studied at different microwave powers. An intense dam** peak is observed when the Rabi frequency Omega_R falls in the vicinity of the Larmor frequency of protons w_N, while the dam** time t_R of oscillations reaches values 10 times shorter than the phase coherence time t_2 measured at the same temperature. The experiments are interpreted by the N-spin model showing that t_R is directly associated with the decoherence via electronic/nuclear spin cross-relaxation in the rotating reference frame. It is shown that this decoherence is accompanied with energy dissipation in the range of the Rabi frequencies w_N - sigma_e < Omega_R < w_N, where sigma_e is the mean super-hyperfine field (in frequency units) induced by protons at SMMs. Weaker dam** without dissipation takes place outside this dissipation window. Simple local field estimations suggest that this rapid cross-relaxation in resonant microwave field observed for the first time in SMMV_15 should take place in other SMMs like Fe_8 and Mn_12 containing protons, too.
