We managed to synthesize non-linear YBa2Cu3Ox whiskers, i.e. half loops or kinked shapes, which are promising candidates for solid-state devices based on the intrinsic Josephson effect and with improved electrical connections. We report on a complete characterization of their structural properties via synchrotron nanoprobe as well as laboratory single-crystal diffraction techniques. This investigation allowed us to fully disclose the growth mechanism, which leads to the formation of curved whiskers. The superconducting properties are evaluated in comparison with the straight counterpart, revealing a strong functional analogy and confirming their potential applicability in superconducting electronic devices.

We report on magnetization data obtained as a function of temperature and magnetic field in Li2 (Pd0.8Pt0.2)3B and Li2Pd3B non-centro-symmetric superconductors. Reversible magnetization curves were plotted as M1/2 vs. T. This allows study of the asymptotic behavior of the averaged order parameter amplitude (gap) near the superconducting transition. Results of the analysis show, as expected, a mean field superconducting transition for Li2Pd3B. On contrary, a large deviation from the mean field behavior is revealed for Li2(Pd0.8Pt0.2)3B. This is interpreted as due to the strength of the non s-wave spin-triplet pairing in this Pt-containing compound which produces nodes in the order parameter and consequently, phase fluctuations. The diamagnetic signal above Tc(H) in Li2Pd3B is well explained by superconducting Gaussian fluctuations, which agrees with the observed mean field transition. For Li2(Pd0.8Pt0.2)3B the diamagnetic signal above Tc(H) is much higher than the expected Gaussian values and appears to be well explained by three dimensional critical fluctuations of the lowest-Landau-level type, which somehow agrees with the scenario of a phase mediated transition.

C allowed enhancement of Tc up to 8.2-8.4K. Compositions Li2Z3B with Z=Ni, Ru, Rh, Re, Ag are not superconducting down to 1.8K. Exception is composition with Re showing superconductivity due to Re3B compound. All samples were prepared by arc melting.

Our result indicates the presence of the hexagonal FS centered at G point, while the small pocket FSs along G-K direction are absent similar to NaxCoO2. The top of the eg' band, which is expected in band calculations to form the small pocket FSs, extends to within 20 - 50 meV below EF, more closer to EF than in NaxCoO2. We discuss its possible role in superconductivity, comparing with other experimental and theoretical results.

The scaling approach recently proposed by Landau and Ott for isothermal magnetization curves is extended to the average kinetic energy density of the condensate. Two low $T_c$ superconductors, Nb and $Li_{2}Pd_{3}B$ are studied and their isothermal reversible magnetization shown to display Landau and Ott scaling. Good agreement is obtained for the upper critical field $H_{c2}(T)$, determined from the Abrikosov approximation for the reversible region (standard linear extrapolation of the magnetization curve), and from the maximum of the kinetic energy curves. For the full range of data, which includes the irreversible region, the isothermal $d.M.B/H^2$ curves for $Li_2Pd_3B$ show an impressive collapse into a single curve over the entire range of field measurements. The Nb isothermal $d.M.B/H^2$ curves exhibit the interesting feature of a constant and temperature independent minimum value.

The measured phonon dispersion along the $Γ-M$ direction show a marked softening with hole do** of two optical phonon branches close to the Brillouin zone boundary. The phonon spectra, dispersion, and softening are well reproduced by first-principle calculations. The calculations indicates that the soft branches are mainly composed of Co-vibration modes. The estimation of the critical temperature based on electron-phonon coupling mechanism undisputedly points to a non-conventional superconducting state in this material.

We investigate the order parameter of noncentrosymmetric superconductors Li$_2$Pd$_3$B and Li$_2$Pt$_3$B via the behavior of the penetration depth $λ(T)$. The low-temperature penetration depth shows BCS-like behavior in Li$_2$Pd$_3$B, while in Li$_2$Pt$_3$B it follows a linear temperature dependence. We propose that broken inversion symmetry and the accompanying antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling, which admix spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairing, are responsible for this behavior. The triplet contribution is weak in Li$_2$Pd$_3$B, leading to a wholly open but anisotropic gap. The significantly larger spin-orbit coupling in Li$_2$Pt$_3$B allows the spin-triplet component to be larger in Li$_2$Pt$_3$B, producing line nodes in the energy gap as evidenced by the linear temperature dependence of $λ(T)$. The experimental data are in quantitative agreement with theory.

Among notable effects are the development of the second magnetization peak with a higher amplitude J$_{c}$, max and the enhancement of H$_{irr}$ at high temperatures, above a certain value T* which depends on both y$_{LiF}$ and z$_{AgO}$. The best results are obtained for the sample with y$_{LiF}$=0.1 and z$_{AgO}$=0.73. This sample preserves its single phase Cu,C-1234 composition. The influence on the FTE and H$_{irr}$ of the interplay between do** characteristics, controlled by LiF and AgO content, is discussed.

We report the in-plane resistivity and magnetic susceptibility of the layered cobalt oxide Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}{\cdot}1.3$H$_{2}$O single crystal. The temperature dependence of the resistivity shows metallic behavior from room temperature to the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ of 4.5 K. Sharp resistive transition, zero resistivity and almost perfect superconducting volume fraction below $T_{c}$ indicate the good quality and the bulk superconductivity of the single crystal. The upper critical field $H_{c2}$ and the coherence length $ξ$ are obtained from the resistive transitions in magnetic field parallel to the c-axis and the $ab$-plane. The anisotropy of $ξ$, $ξ_{ab} / ξ_{c} =$ 12 nm/1.3 nm $\simeq$ 9.2, suggests that this material is considered to be an anisotropic three dimensional superconductor. In the field parallel to the $ab$-plane, $H_{c2}$ seems to be suppressed to the value of Pauli paramagnetic limit. It may indicate the spin singlet superconductivity in the cobalt oxide.

The cuprates seem to exhibit statistics, dimensionality and phase transitions in novel ways. The nature of excitations [i.e. quasiparticle or collective], spin-charge separation, stripes [static and dynamics], inhomogeneities, psuedogap, effect of impurity do**s [e.g. Zn, Ni] and any other phenomenon in these materials must be consistently understood. Zn-doped LSCO single crystal were grown by TSFZ technique. Temperature dependent Polarized XANES [near edge local structure] spectra were measured at the BL13-B1 [Photon Factory] in the Flourescence mode from 10 K to 300 K. Since both stripes and nonmagnetic Zn impurities substituted for Cu give rise to inhomogeneous charge and spin distribution it is interesting to understand the interplay of Zn impurities and stripes. To understand these points we have used Zn-do** and some of the results obtained are as follows: The spectra show a strong dependence with respect to the polarization angle, $θ$, as is evident at any temperature by comparing the spectra where the electric field vector is parallel with ab-plane to the one where it is parallel to the c-axis. By using the XANES [temperature] difference spectra we have determined T* [experimentally we find, T* $\approx$ 160-170 K] for this sample. The XANES difference spectra shows that the changes in XANES features are larger in the ab-plane than the c-axis, this trend is expected since zinc is doped in the ab-plane at the copper site. Our study also complements the results in literature namely that zinc do** does not affect the c-axis transport.

This material is prepared under high pressure [3.5 GPa] from precursors with small carbon concentrations and exhibits a T$_c$ of $~127$ K. We have also performed ``aging'' study by looking at XRD for this material after approximately one year. The XRD results at 300 K are ``unchanged''. It is of interest to compare the EXAFS spectrum of this compound with the corresponding compound Cu-1234. Remarks on the choice of appropriate EXAFS standard for this and related compounds are also given. Based on our data analysis we quantify disorder in these systems. By using the Cu-O in-plane distance we give values for the microstrain parameter, which can be related to the charge ordering transition.
