The automated analysis of medical time series, such as the electrocardiogram (ECG), electroencephalogram (EEG), pulse oximetry, etc, has the potential to serve as a valuable tool for diagnostic decisions, allowing for remote monitoring of patients and more efficient use of expensive and time-consuming medical procedures. Deep neural networks (DNNs) have been demonstrated to process such signals effectively. However, previous research has primarily focused on classifying medical time series rather than attempting to regress the continuous-valued physiological parameters central to diagnosis. One significant challenge in this regard is the imbalanced nature of the dataset, as a low prevalence of abnormal conditions can lead to heavily skewed data that results in inaccurate predictions and a lack of certainty in such predictions when deployed. To address these challenges, we propose HypUC, a framework for imbalanced probabilistic regression in medical time series, making several contributions. (i) We introduce a simple kernel density-based technique to tackle the imbalanced regression problem with medical time series. (ii) Moreover, we employ a probabilistic regression framework that allows uncertainty estimation for the predicted continuous values. (iii) We also present a new approach to calibrate the predicted uncertainty further. (iv) Finally, we demonstrate a technique to use calibrated uncertainty estimates to improve the predicted continuous value and show the efficacy of the calibrated uncertainty estimates to flag unreliable predictions. HypUC is evaluated on a large, diverse, real-world dataset of ECGs collected from millions of patients, outperforming several conventional baselines on various diagnostic tasks, suggesting a potential use-case for the reliable clinical deployment of deep learning models.

We study the set of incentive compatible and efficient two-sided matching mechanisms. We classify all such mechanisms under an additional assumption -- "gender-neutrality" -- which guarantees that the two sides be treated symmetrically. All group strategy-proof, efficient and gender-neutral mechanisms are recursive and the outcome is decided in a sequence of rounds. In each round, two agents are selected, one from each side. These agents are either "matched-by-default" or "unmatched-by-default." In the former case either of the selected agents can unilaterally force the other to match with them while in the latter case they may only match together if both agree. In either case, if this pair of agents is not matched together, each gets their top choice among the set of remaining agents. As an important step in the characterization, we first show that in one-sided matching all group strategy-proof and efficient mechanisms are sequential dictatorships. An immediate corollary is that there are no individually rational, group strategy-proof and efficient one-sided matching mechanisms.

A nonlinear analytical model for the pressure dynamics in a vacuum chamber, pumped with a sputter ion pump (SIP), is proposed, discussed and experimentally evaluated. The model describes the physics of the pum** mechanism of SIPs in the context of a cold-atom experiment. By using this model, we fit pump-down curves of our vacuum system to extract the relevant physical parameters characterizing its pressure dynamics. The aim of this investigation is the optimization of cold-atom experiments in terms of reducing the dead time for quantum sensing using atom interferometry. We develop a calibration method to improve the precision in pressure measurements via the ion current in SIPs. Our method is based on a careful analysis of the gas conductance and pum** in order to reliably link the pressure readings at the SIP with the actual pressure in the vacuum (science) chamber. Our results are in agreement with the existence of essentially two pum** regimes determined by the pressure level in the system. In particular, we find our results in agreement with the well-known fact that for a given applied voltage, at low pressures, the discharge current efficiently sputters pum** material from the pump's electrodes. This process sets the leading pum** mechanism in this limit. At high pressures, the discharge current drops and the pum** is mainly performed by the already sputtered material.

We investigate whether fairness is compatible with efficiency in economies with multi-self agents, who may not be able to integrate their multiple objectives into a single complete and transitive ranking. We adapt envy-freeness, egalitarian-equivalence and the fair-share guarantee in two different ways. An allocation is unambiguously-fair if it satisfies the chosen criterion of fairness according to every objective of any agent; it is aggregate-fair if it satisfies the criterion for some aggregation of each agent's objectives.
While efficiency is always compatible with the unambiguous fair-share guarantee, it is incompatible with unambiguous envy-freeness in economics with at least three agents. Two agents are enough for efficiency and unambiguous egalitarian-equivalence to clash. Efficiency and the unambiguous fair-share guarantee can be attained together with aggregate envy-freeness, or aggregate egalitarian-equivalence.

Space Division Multiplexing (SMD) is a very attractive technique for addressing the ever-growing demands in transmission capacity by enabling the use of a new parameter \textemdash\ space \textemdash\ to increase the number of channels in multi-mode fibers. One key component to build a spatially multiplexed-based optical network is a spatial multiplexer and demultiplexer combining signals from multiple single-mode fibers into as many channels in a multi-mode fiber. In this article, we report the fabrication and characterization of a pair of 45-mode spatial multiplexer and demultiplexer saturating all the modes of a standard 50~$μ$m core graded-index (OM2) multi-mode fiber. The multiplexers are based on Multi-Plane Light Conversion (MPLC), a technique that enables the control of the transverse shape of the light by multiple reflections on specifically designed phase plates. We show that by using a separable variable basis of modes, such as Hermite-Gaussian (HG) modes, we are able to drastically reduce the number of reflections hence reducing the insertion losses and modal crosstalks. The multiplexers typically show an average 4~dB insertion loss and -28~dB cross-talk across the C band. Finally, we emphasize the use of this higher-order modes multiplexer to explore the propagation properties inside multi-mode fibers and more specifically the mode group crosstalks as well as the impact of fiber bending.

However, locally this limit can be broken. In this paper, we give a general formula to calculate the recoil in vacuum. We show that in a laser beam with a distorted optical field, there are regions where the recoil can be higher than this limit. Using atoms placed in those regions we are able to measure directly the extra recoil.

The Gibbard-Satterthwaite Impossibility Theorem holds that dictatorship is the only Pareto optimal and strategyproof social choice function on the full domain of preferences. Much of the work in mechanism design aims at getting around this impossibility theorem. Three grand success stories stand out. On the domains of single peaked preferences, of house matching, and of quasilinear preferences, there are appealing Pareto optimal and strategyproof social choice functions. We investigate whether these success stories are robust to strengthening strategyproofness to obvious strategyproofness (OSP), recently introduced by Li (2015).
For single peaked preferences, we characterize the class of OSP-implementable and unanimous social choice functions as dictatorships with safeguards against extremism - mechanisms (which turn out to also be Pareto optimal) in which the dictator can choose the outcome, but other agents may prevent the dictator from choosing an outcome that is too extreme. Median voting is consequently not OSP-implementable. Indeed, the only OSP-implementable quantile rules choose either the minimal or the maximal ideal point. For house matching, we characterize the class of OSP-implementable and Pareto optimal matching rules as sequential barter with lurkers - a significant generalization over bossy variants of bipolar serially dictatorial rules. While Li (2015) shows that second-price auctions are OSP-implementable when only one good is sold, we show that this positive result does not extend to the case of multiple goods. Even when all agents' preferences over goods are quasilinear and additive, no welfare-maximizing auction where losers pay nothing is OSP-implementable when more than one good is sold. Our analysis makes use of a gradual revelation principle, an analog of the (direct) revelation principle for OSP mechanisms that we present and prove.
