We perform a systematic \textit{ab initio} density functional study of the superconductivity, electronic and phononic band structures, electron-phonon coupling and elastic constants of all four possible structures of niobium nitride $β$-Nb$_2$N as well as Nb-rich $γ$-Nb$_4$N$_3$ and N-rich $β^\prime$-Nb$_4$N$_5$. First of all, we find that all four structures of $β$-Nb$_2$N are superconductors with superconducting transition temperatures ($T_c$) ranging from 0.6 K to 6.1 K, depending on the structure. This explains why previous experiments reported contradicting $T_c$ values for $β$-Nb$_2$N. Furthermore, both $γ$-Nb$_4$N$_3$ and $β^\prime$-Nb$_4$N$_5$ are predicted to be superconductors with rather high $T_c$ of 8.5 K and 15.3 K, respectively. Second, the calculated elastic constants and phonon dispersion relations show that all the considered niobium nitride structures are mechanically and dynamically stable. Moreover, the calculated elastic moduli demonstrate that all the niobium nitrides are hard materials with bulk moduli and hardness being comparable to or larger than the well-known hard sapphire. Third, the calculated band structures reveal that the nitrides possess both type I and type II Dirac nodal points and are thus topological metals. Finally, the calculated electron-phonon coupling strength, superconductivity and mechanical property of the niobium nitrides are discussed in terms of their underlying electronic structures and also Debye temperatures. The present \textit{ab initio} study thus indicates that $β$-Nb$_2$N, $γ$-Nb$_4$N$_3$ and $β^\prime$-Nb$_4$N$_5$ are hard superconductors with nontrivial band topology and are promising materials for exploring exotic phenomena due to the interplay of hardness, superconductivity and nontrivial band topology.

On-demand spin orientation with long polarized lifetime and easily detectable signal is an ultimate goal for spintronics. However, there still exists a trade-off between controllability and stability of spin polarization, awaiting a significant breakthrough. Here, we demonstrate switchable optomagnet effects in (Fe$_{1-x}$Zn$_{x}$)$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{8}$, from which we can obtain tunable magnetization, spanning from -40$\%$ to 40$\%$ of a saturated magnetization that is created from zero magnetization in the antiferromagnetic state without magnetic fields. It is accomplishable via utilizing circularly-polarized laser pulses to excite spin-flip transitions in polar antiferromagnets that have no spin canting, traditionally hard to control without very strong magnetic fields. The spin controllability in (Fe$_{1-x}$Zn$_{x}$)$_{2}$Mo$_{3}$O$_{8}$ originates from its polar structure that breaks the crystal inversion symmetry, allowing distinct on-site $d$-$d$ transitions for selective spin flip. By chemical do**, we exploit the phase competition between antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic states to enhance and stabilize the optomagnet effects, which result in long-lived photoinduced Kerr rotations. The present study, creating switchable giant optomagnet effects in polar antiferromagnets, sketches a new blueprint for the function of antiferromagnetic spintronics.

In this paper, we investigate the electronic band structure, lattice dynamics and electron-phonon interaction in $δ$-NbN, $\varepsilon$-NbN and WC-NbN by performing systematic ab initio calculations based on DFT-GGA. The calculated electronic band structures show that all three polytypes are metallic with the Nb $d$-orbital dominated energy bands near the Fermi level ($E_F$). The calculated phonon dispersion relations of $δ$-NbN are in good agreement with neutron scattering experiments. The electron-phonon coupling ($λ$) in $δ$-NbN ($λ=0.98$) is much stronger than in $\varepsilon$-NbN ($λ=0.16$) and WC-NbN ($λ=0.11$). This results in a much higher superconducting transition temperature ($T_c =18.2$ K) than in $\varepsilon$-NbN and WC-NbN ($T_c \le 1.0$ K). The stronger $λ$ and higher $T_c$ in $δ$-NbN are attributed to its large density of states at $E_F$ and small Debye temperature. The calculated $T_c$ of $δ$-NbN is in good agreement with the experimental values. However, the predicted $T_c$ of $\varepsilon$-NbN is much smaller than the recent experiment (11.6 K) but agrees well with the earlier experiment. Finally, the calculated relativistic band structures reveal that all three NbN polytypes are topological metals. Specifically, $\varepsilon$-NbN and $δ$-NbN are, respectively, type-I and type-II Dirac metals, while WC-NbN is an emergent topological metal that has rare triply degenerate nodes. All these results indicate that all the three NbN polytypes should be hard superconductors with nontrivial band topology that would provide valuable opportunities for studying fascinating phenomena arising from the interplay of band topology and superconductivity.

We report systematic first principles density functional study on the electronic structure, elastic and optical properties of nitrogen based solid hydrogen storage materials LiNH$_2$, NaNH$_2$, KNH$_2$, and RbNH$_2$. The ground state structural properties are calculated by using standard density functional theory and also dispersion corrected density functional theory. We find that van der Waals interactions are dominant in LiNH$_2$ whereas they are relatively weak in other alkali metal amides. The calculated elastic constants show that all the compounds are mechanically stable and LiNH$_2$ is found to be stiffer material among the alkali metal amides. The melting temperatures are calculated and which follows the order RbNH$_2$ $<$ KNH$_2$ $<$ NaNH$_2$ $<$ LiNH$_2$. The electronic band structure is calculated by using the Tran-Blaha modified Becke-Johnson potential and found that all the compounds are insulators with a considerable band gap. The [NH$_2$]$^-$ derived states are completely dominating in the entire valence band region while the metal atom states occupy the conduction band. The calculated band structure is used to analyze the different interband optical transitions occur between valence and conduction bands. Our calculations show that these materials have considerable optical anisotropy.

\emph{Ab-initio} calculations were performed on the scheelite type MGeO$_4$ (M = Hf, and Zr) compounds which find wide range of applications such as in x-ray imaging. We have studied the high pressure structural stability, elastic constants, electronic structure and optical properties of these compounds through density functional theory calculations. Two different density functional approaches namely plane wave pseudopotential method (PW-PP) and full potential linearized augmented plane wave method (FP-LAPW) were used for the present study. The ground state structural and vibrational properties are calculated and found to be in good agreement with experimental data. The compressibility of Zr and Hf germanates is found to be anisotropic as the a-axis is less compressible over c-axis due to the presence of Ge-O bonds along a-axis which is further confirmed from the ordering of the elastic constants that follows C$_{11}$ $>$ C$_{33}$. The electronic structure of the compounds has been calculated through recently developed Tran Blaha-modified Becke Johnson potential. The calculated electronic structure shows that the compounds are insulators with a gap of 5.39 eV for ZrGeO$_4$ and 6.25 eV for HfGeO$_4$ respectively. Optical anisotropy of these compounds are revealed from the computed optical properties such as complex dielectric function, refractive index, and absorption coefficient. In addition, it is observed that Ti doped ZrGeO$_4$ and HfGeO$_4$ turns out to be a good phosphor as the pristine compounds have the energy gap greater than the visible range upon Ti do** bandgap reduces as a result emission spectra occurs in the visible region and is well explained in the present study.

The structural, electronic, optical and vibrational properties of LiN$_3$ under high pressure have been studied using plane wave pseudopotentials within the generalized gradient approximation for the exchange and correlation functional. The calculated lattice parameters agree quite well with experiments. The calculated bulk modulus value is found to be 23.23 GPa which is in good agreement with the experimental value of 20.5 GPa. Our calculations reproduce well the trends in high pressure behavior of the structural parameters. The present results show that the compressibility of LiN$_3$ crystal is anisotropic and the crystallographic b-axis is more compressible when compared to a- and c-axis which is also consistent with the experiment. The computed elastic constants clearly shows that LiN$_3$ is a mechanically stable system and the calculated elastic constants follows the order C$_{33}$ $>$ C$_{11}$ $>$ C$_{22}$ implies that the LiN$_3$ lattice is stiffer along c-axis and relatively weaker along b-axis. Under the application of pressure the magnitude of the electronic band gap value decreases, indicating that the system has the tendency to become semi conductor at high pressures. The optical properties such as refractive index, absorption spectra and photo conductivity along the three crystallographic directions have been calculated at ambient as well as at high pressures. The calculated refractive index shows that the system is optically anisotropic and the anisotropy increases with increase in pressure. The observed peaks in the absorption and photo conductivity spectra are found to shift towards the higher energy region as pressure increases which imply that in LiN$_3$ decomposition is favored under pressure with the action of light.

Structural stability and vibrational properties of KN$_3$ have been studied under pressure using the first principles calculations based on the density functional theory (DFT) as well as with semi empirical dispersion correction to the DFT to treat van der Waals interactions. The structural properties calculated through the dispersion correction are in good agreement with the experimental results when compared with the standard density functional theory. The lattice mode and the azide ion bending mode frequencies are found to be well reproduced by our calculations. As pressure increases, the E$_g$ mode gets softened as observed in the experiment. Despite the softening of E$_g$ mode, the enhancement of intramolecular interactions keeps the lattice stable.

We report a detailed first principles study on the structural, elastic, vibrational and thermodynamic properties of layered structure energetic alkali metal azides KN$_3$ and RbN$_3$. All the calculations were carried out by means of plane wave pseudopotential method with and without including van der Waals interactions. The calculated ground state structural properties are improved to a greater extent by the inclusion of dispersion corrections, implies that the van der Waals interactions play a major role on the physical properties of these systems. The elastic constants and the related bulk mechanical properties for the tetragonal KN$_3$ and RbN$_3$ have been calculated using both the methods and found that the compounds are mechanically stable systems. The magnitude of the calculated elastic constants increases in the order RbN$_3$ $<$ KN$_3$ implying higher elastic stiffness for KN$_3$, the fact also confirmed by the higher values of bulk, shear and Young's moduli of KN$_3$ than RbN$_3$. Moreover, the calculated elastic constants follows the inequality C$_{33}$ $<$ C$_{11}$ which indicates the presence of more number of intermolecular interactions along a-axis over c-axis of the azide lattices. A correlation has been proposed to relate the calculated elastic constants to the decomposition phenomena for the metal azides. The experimentally reported vibrational frequencies at the gamma point were exactly reproduced by the present calculations. In addition, we also present the thermodynamic properties such as heat capacity which compares well with the experiment.

The present study explores electronic and structural properties, ionization potential (IP), electron affinity (EA), polarizability (α), chemical potential (μ), hardness (η), softness (S), band gap (ΔE(HOMO-LUMO)) and spectral characteristics of beryllium hydride oligomers by quantum chemical treatment. The discrepancies in the calculated reactive descriptors of molecules are presumably due to variations in electron distribution and spin pairing near Fermi level. The molecules BeH2, Be3H5, Be5H10, Be7H14 and Be9H18 have been found to be more stable than Be2H4, Be4H8, Be6H12, Be8H16 and Be10H20. Ultra-soft pseudopotentials for electron-nuclei interactions with local density approximation (LDA) and generalized gradient approximation (GGA) have been used to understand the nature of bonding in crystalline beryllium hydride. The observed band gap value of crystalline BeH2 is comparable with the band gap value of beryllium hydride oligomers
