Early-type galaxies (ETGs) are known to harbour dense spheroids of stars but scarce star formation (SF). Approximately a quarter of these galaxies have rich molecular gas reservoirs yet do not form stars efficiently. We study here the ETG NGC~524, with strong shear suspected to result in a smooth molecular gas disc and low star-formation efficiency (SFE). We present new spatially-resolved observations of the \textsuperscript{12}CO(2-1)-emitting cold molecular gas from the Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) and of the warm ionised-gas emission lines from SITELLE at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. Although constrained by the resolution of the ALMA observations ($\approx37$~pc), we identify only $52$ GMCs with radii ranging from $30$ to $140$~pc, a low mean molecular gas mass surface density $\langleΣ_{\rm gas}\rangle\approx125$~M$_\odot$~pc$^{-2}$ and a high mean virial parameter $\langleα_{\rm obs,vir}\rangle\approx5.3$. We measure spatially-resolved molecular gas depletion times ($τ_{\rm dep}\equiv1/{\rm SFE}$) with a spatial resolution of $\approx100$~pc within a galactocentric distance of $1.5$~kpc. The global depletion time is $\approx2.0$~Gyr but $τ_{\rm dep}$ increases toward the galaxy centre, with a maximum $τ_{\rm dep,max}\approx5.2$~Gyr. However, no pure \ion{H}{II} region is identified in NGC~524 using ionised-gas emission-line ratio diagnostics, so the $τ_{\rm dep}$ inferred are in fact lower limits. Measuring the GMC properties and dynamical states, we conclude that shear is the dominant mechanism sha** the molecular gas properties and regulating SF in NGC~524. This is supported by analogous analyses of the GMCs in a simulated ETG similar to NGC~524.

In this article, two analytical formulas for the calculation of mutual inductance between a circular filament and line segment arbitrarily positioning in the space are derived by using Mutual Inductance Method (MIM) and Babic's Method (BM), respectively. Using the fact that any curve can be interpolated by a set of line segments, a method for calculation of mutual inductance between a circular filament and filament having an arbitrary shape in the space is proposed based on the derived analytical formulas. The derived two formulas and the proposed method (Segmentation Method) were numerically validated by using FastHenry software and reference examples from the literature. In particular, the proposed method was successfully applied to the calculation of mutual inductance between the circular filament and the following special curves such as circle, circular arc, elliptic arc, ellipse, spiral, helices and conical helices. All results of the calculation are in good agreement with the reference examples.

In this article, sets of analytical formulas for calculation of nine components of magnetic stiffness of corresponding force arising between two current-carrying circular filaments arbitrarily oriented in the space are derived by using Babic's method and the method of mutual inductance (Kalantarov-Zeitlin's method). Formulas are presented through integral expressions, whose kernel function is expressed in terms of the elliptic integrals of the first and second kinds. Also, we obtained an additional set of expressions for calculation of components of magnetic stiffness by means of differentiation of Grover's formula of the mutual inductance between two circular filaments with respect to appropriate coordinates. The derived sets of formulas were mutually validated and results of calculation of components of magnetic stiffness agree well to each other.

Although the assumption of elliptical symmetry is quite common in multivariate analysis and widespread in a number of applications, the problem of testing the null hypothesis of ellipticity so far has not been addressed in a fully satisfactory way. Most of the literature in the area indeed addresses the null hypothesis of elliptical symmetry with specified location and actually addresses location rather than non-elliptical alternatives. In this paper, we are proposing new classes of testing procedures, both for specified and unspecified location. The backbone of our construction is Le Cam's asymptotic theory of statistical experiments, and optimality is to be understood locally and asymptotically within the family of generalized skew-elliptical distributions. The tests we are proposing are meeting all the desired properties of a``good'' test of elliptical symmetry: they have a simple asymptotic distribution under the entire null hypothesis of elliptical symmetry with unspecified radial density and shape parameter; they are affine-invariant, computationally fast, intuitively understandable, and not too demanding in terms of moments. While achieving optimality against generalized skew-elliptical alternatives, they remain quite powerful under a much broader class of non-elliptical distributions and significantly outperform the available competitors.

The effect of magnesium ion Mg2+ on the dielectric relaxation of semidilute DNA aqueous solutions has been studied by means of dielectric spectroscopy in the 100 Hz-100 MHz frequency range. De Gennes-Pfeuty-Dobrynin semidilute solution correlation length is the pertinent fundamental length scale for sufficiently low concentration of added salt, describing the collective properties of Mg-DNA solutions. No relaxation fingerprint of the DNA denaturation bubbles, leading to exposed hydrophobic core scaling, was detected at low DNA concentrations, thus indicating an increased stability of the double-stranded conformation in Mg-DNA solutions as compared to the case of Na-DNA solutions. Some changes are detected in the behavior of the fundamental length scale pertaining to the single molecule DNA properties, reflecting modified electrostatic screening effects of the Odijk-Skolnick-Fixman type. All results consistently demonstrate that Mg2+ ions interact with DNA in a similar way as Na1+ ions do, their effect being mostly describable through an enhanced screening.

We report a study of DNA (150 bp fragments) conformations in very low added salt $<0.05$mM, across wide DNA concentration range $0.0015\leq c \leq 8$~mM (bp). We found an intermediate DNA conformation in the region $0.05 < c < 1$~mM, by means of fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) and UV-absorbance measurements. FCS detected that in this region DNA has the diffusion coefficient, $D_p$ reduced below the values for both ssDNA coils and native dsDNA helices of similar polymerization degree $N$. Thus, this DNA population can not be a simple mix of dsDNA and of ssDNA which results from DNA melting. Here, melting occurs due to a reduction in screening concomitant with DNA concentration being reduced, in already very low salt conditions. The intermediate DNA is rationalized through the well known concept of fluctuational openings (DNA bubbles) which we postulate to form in AT-rich portions of the sequence, without the strands coming apart. Within the bubbles, DNA is locally stretched, while the whole molecule remains rod-like due to very low salt environment. Therefore, such intermediate DNA is elongated, in comparison to dsDNA, which accounts for its reduced $D_p$.

We quantified the Manning free (uncondensed) counterions fraction $θ$ for dilute solutions of rod-like polyions - 150bp DNA fragments, in very low salt $<0.05$mM. Conductivity measurements of aqueous DNA solutions in the concentration range $0.015\leq c \leq 8$~mM (bp) were complemented by fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) measurements of the DNA polyion diffusion coefficient $D_p(c)$. We observed a crossover in the normalized conductivity $σ(c)/c$ which nearly halved across $c=0.05-1$ mM range, while $D_p(c)$ remained rather constant, as we established by FCS. Analyzing these data we extracted $θ(c)=0.30 - 0.45$, and taking the Manning asymmetry field effect on polyelectrolyte conductivity into account we got $θ(c)=0.40-0.60$. We relate the $θ(c)$ variation to gradual DNA denaturation occuring, in the very low salt environment, with the decrease in DNA concentration itself. The extremes of the experimental $θ(c)$ range occur towards the highest, above 1 mM and the lowest, below 0.05 mM, DNA concentrations, and correspond to the theoretical $θ$ values for dsDNA and ssDNA, respectively. Therefore, we confirmed Manning condensation and conductivity models to be valuable in description of dilute solutions of rod-like polyions.

Dielectric spectroscopy is used to investigate fundamental length scales describing the structure of hyaluronic acid sodium salt (Na-HA) semidilute aqueous solutions. In salt-free regime, the length scale of the relaxation mode detected in MHz range scales with HA concentration as $c_\mathrm{HA}^{-0.5}$ and corresponds to the de Gennes-Pfeuty-Dobrynin correlation length of polyelectrolytes in semidilute solution. The same scaling was observed for the case of long, genomic DNA. Conversely, the length scale of the mode detected in kHz range also varies with HA concentration as $c_\mathrm{HA}^{-0.5}$ which differs from the case of DNA ($c_\mathrm{DNA}^{-0.25}$). The observed behavior suggests that the relaxation in the kHz range reveals the de Gennes-Dobrynin renormalized Debye screening length, and not the average size of the chain, as the pertinent length scale. Similarly, with increasing added salt the electrostatic contribution to the HA persistence length is observed to scale as the Debye length, contrary to scaling pertinent to the Odijk-Skolnick-Fixman electrostatic persistence length observed in the case of DNA. We argue that the observed features of the kHz range relaxation are due to much weaker electrostatic interactions that lead to the absence of Manning condensation as well as a rather high flexibility of HA as compared to DNA.

Dielectric spectroscopy is used to investigate fundamental length scales of 146 bp short-fragment (nucleosomal) dilute Na-DNA solutions. Two relaxation modes are detected: the high- and the low-frequency mode. Dependence of the corresponding length scales on the DNA and on the (uni-valent) salt concentration is studied in detail, being different from the case of long, genomic DNA, investigated before. In low added salt regime, the length scale of the high-frequency mode scales as the average separation between DNAs, though it is smaller in absolute magnitude, whereas the length scale of the low-frequency mode is equal to the contour length of DNA. These fundamental length scales in low added salt regime do not depend on whether DNA is in a double stranded or single stranded form. On the other hand, with increasing added salt, the characteristic length scale of low-frequency mode diminishes at low DNA concentrations probably due to dynamical formation of denaturation bubbles and/or fraying in the vicinity of DNA denaturation threshold.

We report on a detailed characterization of complex dielectric response of Na-DNA aqueous solutions by means of low-frequency dielectric spectroscopy (40 Hz - 110 MHz). Results reveal two broad relaxation modes of strength 20<Δε_LF<100 and 5<Δε_HF<20, centered at 0.5 kHz<ν_LF<70 kHz and 0.1 MHz<ν_HF<15 MHz. The characteristic length scale of the LF process, 50<L_LF<750nm, scales with DNA concentration as c_DNA^{-0.29\pm0.04} and is independent of the ionic strength in the low added salt regime. Conversely, the measured length scale of the LF process does not vary with DNA concentration but depends on the ionic strength of the added salt as I_s^{-1} in the high added salt regime. On the other hand, the characteristic length scale of the HF process, 3<L_HF<50 nm, varyes with DNA concentration as c_DNA^{-0.5} for intermediate and large DNA concentrations. At low DNA concentrations and in the low added salt limit the characteristic length scale of the HF process scales as c_DNA^{-0.33}. We put these results in perspective regarding the integrity of the double stranded form of DNA at low salt conditions as well as regarding the role of different types of counterions in different regimes of dielectric dispersion. We argue that the free DNA counterions are primarily active in the HF relaxation, while the condensed counterions play a role only in the LF relaxation. We also suggest theoretical interpretations for all these length scales in the whole regime of DNA and salt concentrations and discuss their ramifications and limitations.
