Double differential inclusive pC cross sections at forward angles theta < 12 degrees as well as the target-mass dependence of the K^+ momentum spectra have been measured with the ANKE spectrometer. Far below the free NN threshold at T_{NN}=1.58 GeV the spectra reveal a high degree of collectivity in the target nucleus. From the target-mass dependence of the cross sections at higher energies, the repulsive in-medium potential of K^+ mesons can be deduced. Using pN cross-section parameterisations from literature and our measured pD data we derive a cross-section ratio of sigma(pn -> K^+ X) / sigma(pp -> K^+ X) ~ (3-4).

Here we report about recent results on associated strangeness production in pp -> KYN (Y= Lambda,Sigma) reactions, on K^+ production in pn collisions, and on K K-bar pair production in pp interactions. We also briefly discuss possible measurements to disentangle the parity of the recently discovered pentaquark state Theta^+, the spin dependence of the YN interaction, as well as planned experiments which aim at the determination of the a_0-f_0 mixing matrix element, a quantity which is believed to be sensitive to the nature of the light scalar mesons a_0/f_0(980).

ANKE is a magnetic spectrometer and detection system at an internal target position of COSY-Juelich optimized for charged kaon detection. Recent results from ANKE on kaon production in pp and pD interactions are reported. From the pp data first absolutely normalized angular and invariant-mass spectra for the reaction pp -> dK+ K0-bar have been obtained. A partial-wave decomposition reveals a strong contribution of S-wave KK-bar pairs with low relative energy, suggesting dominance of resonant kaon production via the a0+(980). This indicates that systematic studies of the light scalar resonances a0/f0(980) are possible at COSY. Final goal of these measurements -- requiring a neutral-particle detector which is not yet available -- is to obtain information about the charge-symmetry breaking a0-f0 mixing. From the analysis of the pD data it is concluded that the K+ production cross section on the neutron is significantly larger as compared to the proton. A cross-section ratio of sigma(n)/sigma(p) ~ 4 is deduced.

Very promising in this respect seems to be the measurement of the reaction $dd \to (\mathrm{^4He} a_0^0 \to) \mathrm{^4He} π^0η$ which violates isospin conservation and can be related to $a_0$-$f_0$ mixing.

The differential cross section of the breakup reaction, averaged up to $8^{\circ}$ over the cm polar angle of the total momentum of the $pp$ pairs, has been obtained. Since the kinematics of this process is quite similar to that of backward elastic $pd \to dp$ scattering, the results are compared to calculations based on a theoretical model previously applied to the $pd \to dp$ process.

ANKE allows to measure double differential cross sections for K+ production at forward angles theta< 12 degr. in a wide momentum range. The cross sections obtained in these experiments together with those from literature show a uniform behavior as functions of momentum transfer and excitation energy of the residual nucleus. At the lowest measured beam energy, far below the free NN-threshold (T_NN=1.58 GeV), the data reveal a high degree of collectivity in the target nucleus. The spectra obtained above threshold should allow one to extract the nuclear K+ potential with an accuracy of better than +/-3 MeV. Information about the mechanisms leading to K+ production can be obtained from K+p and K+d coincidence measurements.

The strong suppression in the ratios observed for p_K<200-250 MeV/c can be ascribed to a combination of Coulomb and nuclear repulsion in the K+A system. This opens a new way to investigate the interaction of K+-mesons in the nuclear medium. Our data are consistent with a K+A nuclear potential of V_K~20 MeV at low kaon momenta and normal nuclear density. Given the sensitivity of the data to the kaon potential, the current experimental precision might allow one to determine V_K to better than 3 MeV.

Total and differential cross sections from literature, on the production of K+ mesons in pA interactions at projectile energies between T=0.8 and 2.9 GeV, covering the transition across the free nucleon-nucleon threshold at 1.58 GeV, have been investigated. From the target-mass dependence of the production cross sections no evidence for the expected change of the dominant reaction mechanism from two-step to direct kaon production was found. At T=1.0 GeV the A dependences of the total cross sections and of the most recent data from COSY-Juelich, differential cross sections measured under forward angles, are strongly different. The invariant K+ production cross sections show an overall exponential scaling behavior with the squared four-momentum transfer between the beam proton and the produced K+ meson for t< -0.05 GeV^2 independent of the beam energy and emission angle. The data from COSY-Juelich reveal a strongly different t dependence in the region of t>0 GeV^2. Further data at forward angles and different beam energies should be taken in order to explore this region of kinematically extreme conditions.

Protons and pions emitted near zero degrees were detected in coincidence, and those with theta_pi <= 2 degrees and theta_p <= 2.5degrees were subjected to detailed analysis. Under these conditions, the excitation energy in the np system was below 3 MeV over the measured momentum range. This is the region of the np final-state-interaction peak, which was measured with a resolution of a fraction of an MeV. The shape of the peak allows one to conclude that the fraction of final spin-singlet np pairs is below about 10%. By using the results of scattering theory, this limit is confirmed through a comparison with the cross section for pp -> d pi^+. The smallness of the singlet contribution is consistent with trends seen in lower energy data.

The omega-resonance production and its pi0 gamma decay in p-A reactions close to threshold is considered within the Intranuclear Cascade (INC) Model. The pi0 gamma invariant mass distribution shows two components which correspond to the omega decay 'inside' and 'outside' the nucleus, respectively. The 'inside' component is distorted by medium effects, which introduce a mass shift as well as collisional broadening for the omega-meson and its decaying pion. The relative contribution of the 'inside' component is analyzed in detail for different kinematical conditions and nuclear targets. It is demonstrated that a measurement of the correlation in azimuthal angle between the pi0 and gamma momenta allows to separate events related to the 'inside' omega decay from different sources of background when uncorrelated pi0's and gamma's are produced.

We explore the possibility to measure the elastic and inelastic $ωN$ cross section in $p{+}d{\to}d{+}ω{+}p_{sp}$ and $p{+}A$ reactions. Our studies indicate that the elastic scattering cross sections can be determined for $ω$ momenta above 1 GeV/c in $p{+}d$ reactions by gating on high proton spectator momenta whereas the $ωN$ absorption cross section down to low relative $ω$ momenta is most effectively studied in $p{+}A$ reactions at beam energies 2.0--2.7 GeV

Abstract:
We investigate the reactions p n -> d omega and p n -> d phi close to the corresponding thresholds. The S-wave amplitudes are calculated within the framework of the two-step model which is described by a triangle graph with pi, rho and omega mesons in the intermediate state. The cross sections of the reactions p n -> d omega and p n -> d phi are predicted to be significantly larger than the cros…

The S-wave amplitudes are calculated within the framework of the two-step model which is described by a triangle graph with pi, rho and omega mesons in the intermediate state. The cross sections of the reactions p n -> d omega and p n -> d phi are predicted to be significantly larger than the cross sections of the corresponding reactions p p -> p p omega and p p -> p p phi at the same values of the c.m. excess energy Q. The ratio of the yields of phi to omega is found to be (30 +/- 7) x 10^-3.

Abstract:
The two-step model with pi-, rho- and omega- exchanges taken into account is applied to investigate the reactions pn -> d eta and pn -> d eta-prime. The existing experimental data on the reaction pn -> d eta are analysed and predictions for the cross section of the reaction pn -> d eta-prime are presented. It is found that pi- as well as rho exchange yield significant contributions in both react…

We investigate the reactions p n -> d omega and p n -> d phi close to threshold and at higher energies. Near threshold we calculate the S-wave amplitudes within the framework of the two-step model which is described by a triangle graph with pi-mesons in the intermediate state and find a ratio of the S-wave amplitudes squared of R =|A(phi)|^2/|A(omega)|^2 = (4-8) x 10^{-3}. Any significant enhancement of the experimental value of R(phi/omega) over this prediction can be interpreted as a possible contribution of the intrinsic s - anti s component in the nucleon-wave function. We present arguments that there is a strong resonance effect in the omega N channel close to threshold. At higher energies we calculate the differential cross sections of the reactions p n -> d omega, p n -> d phi and the ratio of the phi/omega yields within the framework of the quark-gluon string model. An irregular behavior of the phi/omega-ratio is found at s <= 12 GeV^2 due to the interference of the t- and u-channel contributions.
