Non-Hermitian Hamiltonians capture several aspects of open quantum systems, such as dissipation of energy and non-unitary evolution. An example is an optical lattice where the inelastic scattering between the two orbital mobile atoms in their ground state and the atom in a metastable excited state trapped at a particular site and acting as an impurity, results in the two body losses. It was shown in \cite{nakagawa2018non} that this effect is captured by the non-Hermitian Kondo model. which was shown to exhibit two phases depending on the strength of losses. When the losses are weak, the system exhibits the Kondo phase and when the losses are stronger, the system was shown to exhibit the unscreened phase where the Kondo effect ceases to exist, and the impurity is left unscreened. We re-examined this model using the Bethe Ansatz and found that in addition to the above two phases, the system exhibits a novel $\widetilde{YSR}$ phase which is present between the Kondo and the unscreened phases. The model is characterized by two renormalization group invariants, a generalized Kondo temperature $T_K$ and a parameter `$α$' that measures the strength of the loss. The Kondo phase occurs when the losses are weak which corresponds to $0<α<π/2$. As $α$ approaches $π/2$, the Kondo cloud shrinks resulting in the formation of a single particle bound state which screens the impurity in the ground state between $π/2<α<π$. As $α$ increases, the impurity is unscreened in the ground state but can be screened by the localized bound state for $π<α<3π/2$. When $α>3π/2$, one enters the unscreened phase where the impurity cannot be screened. We argue that in addition to the energetics, the system displays different time scales associated with the losses across $α=π/2$, resulting in a phase transition driven by the dissipation in the system.

We investigate the boundary effects that arise when spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ impurities interact with the edges of the antiferromagnetic spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg chain through spin exchange interactions. We consider both cases when the couplings are ferromagnetic or anti-ferromagnetic. We find that in the case of antiferromagnetic interaction, when the impurity coupling strength is much weaker than that in the bulk, the impurity is screened in the ground state via the Kondo effect. The Kondo phase is characterized by the Lorentzian density of states and dynamically generated Kondo temperature $T_K$. As the impurity coupling strength increases, $T_K$ increases until it reaches its maximum value $T_0=2πJ$ which is the maximum energy carried by a single spinon. When the impurity coupling strength is increased further, we enter another phase, the bound mode phase, where the impurity is screened in the ground state by a single particle bound mode exponentially localized at the edge to which the impurity is coupled. We find that the impurity can be unscreened by removing the bound mode. There exists a boundary eigenstate phase transition between the Kondo and the bound-mode phases, a transition which is characterized by the change in the number of towers of the Hilbert space. The transition also manifests itself in ground state quantities like local impurity density of states and the local impurity magnetization. When the impurity coupling is ferromagnetic, the impurity is unscreened in the ground state; however, when the absolute value of the ratio of the impurity and bulk coupling strengths is greater than $\frac{4}{5}$, the impurity can be screened by adding a bound mode that costs energy greater than $T_0$. When two impurities are considered, the phases exhibited by each impurity remain unchanged in the thermodynamic limit, but nevertheless the system exhibits a rich phase diagram.

We consider the spin $\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg chain with boundary magnetic fields and analyze it using a combination of Bethe ansatz and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) techniques. We show that the system exhibits several different ground states which depend on the orientation of the boundary magnetic fields. When both the boundary fields take equal values greater than a critical field strength, each edge in the ground state accumulates a fractional spin which saturates to spin $\frac{1}{4}$, which is similar to systems exhibiting symmetry protected topological phases (SPT). Unlike in SPT systems, the fractional boundary spin in the Heisenberg spin chain is not a genuine quantum number since the variance of the associated operator does not vanish, this is due to the absence of a bulk gap. The system exhibits high energy bound states when the boundary fields take values greater than the critical field. All the excitations in the system can be sorted out into towers whose number depends on the number of bound states exhibited by the system. As the boundary fields are varied, in addition to the ground state phase transition, we find that the system may undergo an eigenstate phase transition (EPT) where the number of towers of the Hilbert space changes. We further inquire how the EPT reflects itself on local ground state properties by computing the magnetization profile $\langle S^z_j \rangle$ using DMRG. We identify a clear qualitative change from low edge fields to high edge fields when crossing the critical field. We though are unable to conclude on the basis of our data that EPT corresponds to a genuine phase transition in the ground state.

We re-examine the problem of a magnetic impurity coupled to a superconductor focusing on the role of quantum fluctuations. We study in detail, a system that consists of a one-dimensional charge conserving spin-singlet superconductor coupled to a boundary magnetic impurity. Our main finding is that quantum fluctuations lead to the destruction of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) intra-gap bound-states in all but a narrow region of the phase diagram. We carry out our analysis in three stages, increasing the role of the quantum fluctuations at each stage. First we consider the limit of a classical impurity and study the bulk semiclassically, finding YSR states throughout the phase diagram, a situation similar to conventional BCS superconductors. In the second stage, we reintroduce quantum fluctuations in the bulk and find that the YSR state is suppressed over half of the phase diagram, existing only around the quantum critical point separating the unscreened and the partially screened phases. In the final stage we solve exactly the full interacting model with arbitrary coupling constants using Bethe Ansatz. We find that including both the quantum fluctuating bulk and quantum impurity destabilizes the YSR state over most of the phase diagram allowing it to exist only in a small region, the YSR regime, between a Kondo-screened and an unscreened regime. Within the YSR regime a first order phase transition occurs between a spin singlet and doublet ground state. We also find that for large enough impurity spin exchange interaction a renormalized Kondo-screened regime is established. In this regime, not found for BCS superconductors, there is no YSR state and a renormalized Kondo temperature scale is generated.

We investigate one-dimensional charge conserving, spin-singlet (SSS) and spin-triplet (STS) superconductors in the presence of boundary fields. In systems with Open Boundary Conditions (OBC) it has been demonstrated that STS display a four-fold topological degeneracy, protected by the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry which reverses the spins of all fermions, whereas SSS are topologically trivial. In this work we show that it is not only the type of the bulk superconducting instability that determines the eventual topological nature of a phase, but rather the interplay between bulk and boundary properties. In particular we show by means of the Bethe Ansatz technique that SSS may as well be in a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-protected topological phase provided suitable "twisted" open boundary conditions ${\widehat{OBC}}$ are imposed. More generally, we find that depending on the boundary fields, a given superconductor, either SSS or STS, may exhibits several types of phases such as topological, mid-gap and trivial phases; each phase being characterized by a boundary fixed point which which we determine. Of particular interest are the mid-gap phases which are stabilized close to the topological fixed point. They include both fractionalized phases where spin-$\frac{1}{4}$ bound-states are localized at the two edges of the system and un-fractionalized phases where a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ bound-state is localized at either the left or the right edge.

We solve the model with open boundary conditions on the a finite line segment by means of the Bethe Ansatz. We show that the ground state displays a fourfold degeneracy when the bulk is in the spin triplet superconducting phase. This degeneracy corresponds to the existence of zero energy boundary bound states localized at the edges which may be interpreted, in the light of the previous semi-classical analysis due to Kesselman and Berg \cite{Keselman2015}, as resulting from the existence of fractional spin $\pm 1/4$ localized at the two edges of the system.

We develop a framework to analyze one-dimensional topological superconductors with charge conservation. In particular, we consider models with $N$ flavors of fermions and $(\mathbb{Z}_2)^N$ symmetry, associated with the conservation of the fermionic parity of each flavor. For a single flavor, we recover the result that a distinct topological phase with exponentially localized zero modes does not exist due to absence of a gap to single particles in the bulk. For $N>1$, however, we show that the ends of the system can host low-energy, exponentially-localized modes. The analysis can readily be generalized to systems in other symmetry classes. To illustrate these ideas, we focus on lattice models with $SO\left(N\right)$ symmetric interactions, and study the phase transition between the trivial and the topological gapless phases using bosonization and a weak-coupling renormalization group analysis. As a concrete example, we study in detail the case of $N=3$. We show that in this case, the topologically non-trivial superconducting phase corresponds to a gapless analogue of the Haldane phase in spin-1 chains. In this phase, although the bulk is gapless to single particle excitations, the ends host spin-$1/2$ degrees of freedom which are exponentially localized and protected by the spin gap in the bulk. We obtain the full phase diagram of the model numerically, using density matrix renormalization group calculations. Within this model, we identify the self-dual line studied by Andrei and Destri [Nucl. Phys. B, 231(3), 445-480 (1984)], as a first-order transition line between the gapless Haldane phase and a trivial gapless phase. This allows us to identify the propagating spin-$1/2$ kinks in the Andrei-Destri model as the topological end-modes present at the domain walls between the two phases.

In this work we provide for a description of the low-energy physics of interacting multi-species fermions in terms of the bound-states that are stabilized in these systems when a spin gap opens. We argue that, at energies much smaller than the spin gap, these systems are described by a Luttinger liquid of bound-states that depends, on top of the charge stiffness $ν$ and the charge velocity $u$, on a "Fermi" momentum $P_F$ satisfying $qP_F = Nk_F$ where $q$ is the charge of the bound-state, $N$ the number of species and $k_F$ is the Fermi momentum in the non-interacting limit. We further argue that for generic interactions, generic bound-states are likely to be stabilized. They are associated with emergent, in general non-local, symmetries and are in the number of five. The first two consist of either a charge $q=N$ local $SU(N)$ singlet or a charge $q=N$ bound-state made of two local $SU(p)$ and $SU(N-p)$ singlets. In this case the Fermi momentum $P_F=k_F$ is preserved. The three others have an enhanced Fermi vector $P_F$. The latter are either charge $q=2$ bosonic p-wave and s-wave pairs with $SO(N)$ and $SP(N)$ symmetry and $P_F=Nk_F/2$ or a composite fermion of charge $q=1$ with $P_F=Nk_F$. The instabilities of these Luttinger liquid states towards incompressible phases and their possible topological nature are also discussed.

We investigate the possible classification of zero-temperature spin-gapped phases of multicomponent electronic systems in one spatial dimension. At the heart of our analysis is the existence of non-perturbative duality symmetries which emerge within a low-energy description. These dualities fall into a finite number of classes that can be listed and depend only on the algebraic properties of the symmetries of the system: its physical symmetry group and the maximal continuous symmetry group of the interaction. We further characterize possible competing orders associated to the dualities and discuss the nature of the quantum phase transitions between them. Finally, as an illustration, the duality approach is applied to the description of the phases of two-leg electronic ladders for incommensurate filling.

We study spin 3/2 fermionic cold atoms with attractive interactions confined in a one-dimensional optical lattice. Using numerical techniques, we determine the phase diagram for a generic density. For the chosen parameters, one-particle excitations are gapped and the phase diagram is separated into two regions: one where the two-particle excitation gap is zero, and one where it is finite. In the first region, the two-body pairing fluctuations (BCS) compete with the density ones. In the other one, a molecular superfluid (MS) phase, in which bound-states of four particles form, competes with the density fluctuations. The properties of the transition line between these two regions is studied through the behavior of the entanglement entropy. The physical features of the various phases, comprising leading correlations, Friedel oscillations, and excitation spectra, are presented. To make the connection with experiments, the effect of a harmonic trap is taken into account. In particular, we emphasize the conditions under which the appealing MS phase can be realized, and how the phases could be probed by using the density profiles and the associated structure factor. Lastly, the consequences on the flux quantization of the different nature of the pairing in the BCS and MS phases are studied in a situation where the condensate is in a ring geometry.

Two different superfluid phases are found for $F \ge 3/2$ depending on whether a discrete symmetry is spontaneously broken or not: an unconfined BCS pairing phase and a confined molecular superfluid instability made of $2N$ fermions. We propose an experimental distinction between these phases for a gas trapped in an annular geometry. The confined-unconfined transition is shown to belong to the $Z_N$ generalized Ising universality class. We discuss on the possible Mott phases at $1/2N$ filling.

We investigate dynamical symmetry enlargement in the half-filled SU(4) Hubbard chain using non-perturbative renormalization group and Quantum Monte Carlo techniques. A spectral gap is shown to open for arbitrary Coulombic repulsion $U$. At weak coupling, $U \lesssim 3t$, a SO(8) symmetry between charge and spin-orbital excitations is found to be dynamically enlarged at low energy. At strong coupling, $U \gtrsim 6t$, the charge degrees of freedom dynamically decouple and the resulting effective theory in the spin-orbital sector is that of the SO(6) antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model. Both regimes exhibit spin-Peierls order. However, although spin-orbital excitations are $incoherent$ in the SO(6) regime they are $coherent$ in the SO(8) one. The cross-over between these regimes is discussed.

The one-dimensional SU(4) Hubbard model perturbed by Hund coupling is studied, away from half-filling, by means of renormalization group and bosonization methods. A spectral gap is always present in the spin-orbital sector irrespective of the magnitude of the Coulomb repulsion. We further distinguish between two qualitatively different regimes. At small Hund coupling, we find that the symmetry of the system is dynamically enlarged to SU(4) at low energy with the result of {\it coherent} spin-orbital excitations. When the charge sector is not gapped, a superconducting instability is shown to exist. At large Hund coupling, the symmetry is no longer enlarged to SU(4) and the excitations in the spin sector become {\it incoherent}. Furthermore, the superconductivity can be suppressed in favor of the conventional charge density wave state.

Using a {\it collective} Monte Carlo algorithm we study the low-temperature and long-distance properties of two systems of two-dimensional classical tops. Both systems have the same spin-wave dynamics (low-temperature behavior) as a large class of Heisenberg frustrated spin systems. They are constructed so that to differ only by their topological properties. The spin-stiffnesses for the two systems of tops are calculated for different temperatures and different sizes of the sample. This allows to investigate the role of topological defects in frustrated spin systems. Comparisons with Renormalization Group results based on a Non Linear Sigma model approach and with the predictions of some simple phenomenological model taking into account the topological excitations are done.

We study a class of one-dimensional models consisting of a frustrated (N+1)-leg spin ladder, its asymmetric doped version as a special example of a Luttinger liquid in an active environment, and the N-channel Kondo-Heisenberg model away from half-filling. It is shown that these models exhibit a critical phase with generally a non-integer central charge and belong to the class of chirally stabilized spin liquids recently introduced by Andrei, Douglas, and Jerez [Phys. Rev. B 58, 7619 (1998)]. By allowing anisotropic interactions in spin space, an exact solution in the N=2 case is found at a Toulouse point which captures all universal properties of the models. At the critical point, the massless degrees of freedom are described in terms of an effective S=1/2 Heisenberg spin chain and two critical Ising models. The Toulouse limit solution enables us to discuss the spectral properties, the computation of the spin-spin correlation functions as well as the estimation of the NMR relaxation rate of the frustrated three-leg ladder. Finally, it is shown that the critical point becomes unstable upon switching on some weak backscattering perturbations in the frustrated three-leg ladder.

We study the effect of symmetry breaking perturbations in the one-dimensional SU(4) spin-orbital model. We allow the exchange in spin ($J_1$) and orbital ($J_2$) channel to be different and thus reduce the symmetry to SU(2) $\otimes$ SU(2). A magnetic field $h$ along the $S^z$ direction is also applied. Using the formalism developped by Azaria et al we extend their analysis of the isotropic $J_1=J_2$, h=0 case and obtain the low-energy effective theory near the SU(4) point in the asymmetric case. An accurate analysis of the renormalization group flow is presented with a particular emphasis on the effect of the anisotropy. In zero magnetic field, we retrieve the same qualitative low-energy physics than in the isotropic case. In particular, the massless behavior found on the line $J_1=J_2>K/4$ extends in a large anisotropic region. We discover though that the anisotropy plays its trick in allowing non trivial scaling behaviors of the physical quantities. When a magnetic field is present the effect of the anisotropy is striking. In addition to the usual commensurate-incommensurate phase transition that occurs in the spin sector of the theory, we find that the field may induce a second transition of the KT type in the remaining degrees of freedom to which it does not couple directly. In this sector, we find that the effective theory is that of an SO(4) Gross-Neveu model with an h-dependent coupling that may change its sign as h varies.

We investigate the metal-insulator transition of the one-dimensional SU(N) Hubbard model for repulsive interaction. Using the bosonization approach a Mott transition in the charge sector at half-filling (k_F=π/Na_0) is conjectured for N > 2. Expressions for the charge and spin velocities as well as for the Luttinger liquid parameters and some correlation functions are given. The theoretical predictions are compared with numerical results obtained with an improved zero-temperature quantum Monte Carlo approach. The method used is a generalized Green's function Monte Carlo scheme in which the stochastic time evolution is partially integrated out. Very accurate results for the gaps, velocities, and Luttinger liquid parameters as a function of the Coulomb interaction U are given for the cases N=3 and N=4. Our results strongly support the existence of a Mott-Hubbard transition at a {\it non-zero} value of the Coulomb interaction. We find $U_c \sim 2.2$ for N=3 and $U_c \sim 2.8$ for N=4.

The $β$ functions for the two coupling constants of this model are calculated around two dimensions at two loop order in a low temperature expansion. Our study is completed by a large $N$ analysis of the model. The $β$ functions for the coupling constants and the mass gap are calculated in all dimensions between 2 and 4 at order ${1/N}$. As a main result we show that the standard procedure at the basis of the $1/N$ expansion leads to results that partially contradict those of the weak coupling analysis. We finally present the procedure that reconciles the weak coupling and large $N$ analysis, giving a consistent picture of the expected scaling of frustrated magnets.

It is shown that a stable fixed point exists as soon as $N$ is greater than 3 (or equal). In the N=3 case, the symmetry of the system is dynamically enlarged at the fixed point to O(4) We show that the order parameter for Heisenberg helimagnets involves a tensor representation of $O(4)$. We show that for large $N$ and in the neighborhood of two dimensions this nonlinear sigma model describes the same critical theory as the Landau-Ginzburg linear theory. We deduce that there exists a dividing line $N_c (D)$ in the plane $(N, D)$ separating a first-order region containing the Heisenberg point at $D=4$ and a second-order region containing the whole $D=2$ axis. We conclude that the phase transition of Heisenberg helimagnets in dimension 3 is either first order or second order with $O(4)$ exponents involving a tensor representation or tricritical.
