This work presents our theoretical study of the dissociative recombination (DR) of the closed-shell diatomic system CF$^+$ based on an approach recently applied to the CH$^+$ molecule. Our extended treatment uses the UK R-matrix theory and the multichannel quantum-defect theory procedure to uniformly resolve the direct and indirect mechanisms of DR while bypassing explicit dissociative state and electronic coupling calculations. The theoretical results exhibit good overall agreement with previous experimental measurements. At lower scattering energies, good agreement is found only if the rotational structure of the ion is included and the theoretical cross sections are averaged over initial rotational levels corresponding to the temperature at which the experimental measurements were made. At higher scattering energies, our rotationally resolved results are very similar to those obtained without including the ion's rotational structure.

Our previous studies of dissociative recombination, and vibrational excitation/de-excitation of the BeH$^+$ ion, based on the multichannel quantum defect theory, are extended to collision energies above the dissociation threshold, taking into account the vibrational continua of the BeH$^+$ ion and, consequently, its dissociative excitation. We have also significantly increased the number of dissociative states of $^2Π$, $^2Σ^+$ and $^2Δ$ symmetry included in our cross section calculations, generating the most excited-ones by using appropriate scaling laws. Our results are suitable for modeling the kinetics of BeH+ in edge fusion plasmas for collision energies up to 12 eV.

Cross sections and rate coefficients for rovibronic excitation of the CH$^+$ ion by electron impact and dissociative recombination of CH$^+$ with electrons are evaluated using a theoretical approach combining an R-matrix method and molecular quantum defect theory. The method has been developed and tested, comparing the theoretical results with the data from the recent Cryogenic Storage Ring experiment. The obtained cross sections and rate coefficients evaluated for temperatures from 1~K to 10,000~K could be used for plasma modeling in interpretation of astrophysical observations and also in technological applications where molecular hydrocarbon plasma is present.

The importance of the indirect mechanism and of the bending mode is revealed, in spite of the disagreement between our cross section and the experimental one. In a second step, we use our recently elaborated 3D approach based on the normal mode approximation combined with R-matrix theory and MQDT. This approach results in satisfactory agreement with storage-ring measurements, significantly better at very low energy than the former calculations.

The theoretical approach developed here treats uniformly the direct and indirect mechanisms of dissociative recombination (DR) in a diatomic ion. The present theory is based on electron scattering calculations performed at several internuclear distances in the molecule. It is easy to implement becaus there is no need to separately evaluate couplings and the bound dissociative states of the neutral molecule. The theory can be applied to molecular ions with or without electronic resonances at low energies. The approach is applied to compute the DR cross section in electron-CH$^+$ collisions. The computed cross section agrees generally well with recent state-resolved data from a cryogenic storage-ring experiment, which validates the approach.

The probabilities for ortho-H$_2$ and para-H$_2$ in their ground rovibrational states are obtained numerically at collision energies above 50~meV with the total angular momentum $J$ = 0 - 15 and extrapolated below 50~meV using a WKB approach. Thermally averaged rate coefficients for ortho- and para-H$_2$ are obtained; the largest one, for ortho-H$_2$ is about $3.1\times10^{-20}$ cm$^3$/s, which agrees with the experimental results.

The method combines the hyperspherical adiabatic approach, slow variable discretization method, and complex absorbing potential. These results represent the first step for modeling the dynamics of the associated diatom-negative ion collision at low energy involving rotational quenching of the diatom and reactive nucleus exchange via weak tunneling effect through the potential barrier of the potential energy surface.

Using recently obtained potential energy and permanent dipole moment surfaces of H$_3^-$, we calculate the lowest rovibrational levels of the H$_3^-$ electronic ground state, and the cross section for the formation of H$_3^-$ by radiative association between H$^-$ and ortho- and para-H$_2$. We discuss the possibility for the H$_3^-$ ion to be formed and observed in the cold and dense interstellar medium in an environment with a high ionization rate. Such an observation would be a probe for the presence of H$^-$ in the interstellar medium.

A new potential energy surface for the electronic ground state of the simplest triatomic anion H3- is determined for a large number of geometries. Its accuracy is improved at short and large distances compared to previous studies. The permanent dipole moment surface of the state is also computed for the first time. Nine vibrational levels of H3- and fourteen levels of D3- are obtained, bound by at most ~70 cm^{-1} and ~ 126 cm^{-1} respectively. These results should guide the spectroscopic search of the H3- ion in cold gases (below 100K) of molecular hydrogen in the presence of H3- ions.
