Consider the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^3$ endowed with a canonical semi-symmetric non-metric connection determined by a vector field $\mathsf{C}\in\mathfrak{X}(\mathbb{R}^3)$. We study surfaces when the sectional curvature with respect to this connection is constant. In case that the surface is cylindrical, we obtain full classification when the rulings are orthogonal or parallel to $\mathsf{C}$. If the surface is rotational, we prove that the rotation axis is parallel to $\mathsf{C}$ and we classify all conical rotational surfaces with constant sectional curvature. Finally, for the particular case $\frac12$ of the sectional curvature, the existence of rotational surfaces orthogonally intersecting the rotation axis is also obtained.

Constructing first principles models is a challenging task for nonlinear and complex systems such as a wastewater treatment unit. In recent years, data-driven models are widely used to overcome the complexity. However, they often suffer from issues such as missing, low quality or noisy data. Transfer learning is a solution for this issue where knowledge from another task is transferred to target one to increase the prediction performance. In this work, the objective is increasing the prediction performance of an industrial wastewater treatment plant by transferring the knowledge of (i) an open-source simulation model that captures the underlying physics of the process, albeit with dissimilarities to the target plant, (ii) another industrial plant characterized by noisy and limited data but located in the same refinery, and (iii) the model in (ii) and making the objective function of the training problem physics informed where the physics information derived from the open-source model in (ii). Optimisation problems, particularly combinatorial optimisation problems, are difficult to solve due to their complexity and hardness. Such problems have been successfully solved by evolutionary and swarm intelligence algorithms, especially in binary format. However, the approximation may suffer due to the the issues in balance between exploration and exploitation activities (EvE), which remain as the major challenge in this context. Although the complementary usage of multiple operators is becoming more popular for managing EvE with adaptive operator selection schemes, a bespoke adaptive selection system is still an important topic in research. Reinforcement Learning (RL) has recently been proposed as a way to customise and shape up a highly effective adaptive selection system. However, it is still challenging to handle the problem in terms of scalability. This paper proposes and assesses a RL-based novel approach to help develop a generalised framework for gaining, processing, and utilising the experiences for both the immediate and future use. The experimental results support the proposed approach with a certain level of success.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) enhances signal quality by adjusting the phase of electromagnetic waves in wireless communication. Spatial modulation (SM), a prominent index modulation (IM) technique, provides high spectral efficiency and low energy consumption. In this article, a new wireless communication system is proposed by combining capacity-optimized antenna selection (COAS), antenna correlation antenna selection (ACAS), and Euclidean distance-optimized antenna selection (EDAS)-supported RIS-empowered receive SM (RIS-RSM) system (AS-RIS-RSM) in a single-input multiple-output (SIMO) structure. The proposed AS-RIS-RSM schemes (COAS-RIS-RSM, ACAS-RIS-RSM, and EDAS-RIS-RSM) have superior features such as high spectral efficiency, high energy efficiency, and low error data transmission. Integrating COAS, ACAS, and EDAS techniques into the system enables the selection of the channel with the best conditions, thus increasing the error performance of the proposed system. Also, using RIS increases the error performance of the system by controlling the transmitted signal to a certain extent. The analytical ABER results of the proposed AS-RIS-RSM systems are derived and shown to overlap with simulation results. For the proposed systems, an optimal maximum likelihood (ML) detector and a sub-optimal low-complexity greedy detector (GD) are offered. Also, capacity analyses of the proposed AS-RIS-RSM systems are derived and it is observed that they have higher capacity compared to RIS-QAM/PSK and RIS-RSM systems. Then, computational complexity analyses of the proposed COAS-RIS-RSM, ACAS-RIS-RSM, and EDAS-RIS-RSM systems are presented. The proposed systems have been compared to counterpart wireless communication systems including RIS-RSM, RIS-QAM, and RIS-PSK under equivalent conditions, demonstrating that the proposed systems achieve better error performance.

We introduce a novel ensemble approach for feature selection based on hierarchical stacking for non-stationarity and/or a limited number of samples with a large number of features. Our approach exploits the co-dependency between features using a hierarchical structure. Initially, a machine learning model is trained using a subset of features, and then the output of the model is updated using other algorithms in a hierarchical manner with the remaining features to minimize the target loss. This hierarchical structure allows for flexible depth and feature selection. By exploiting feature co-dependency hierarchically, our proposed approach overcomes the limitations of traditional feature selection methods and feature importance scores. The effectiveness of the approach is demonstrated on synthetic and well-known real-life datasets, providing significant scalable and stable performance improvements compared to the traditional methods and the state-of-the-art approaches. We also provide the source code of our approach to facilitate further research and replicability of our results.

The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is considered a crucial technology for the future of wireless communication. Recently, there has been significant interest in combining RIS with spatial modulation (SM) or space shift keying (SSK) to achieve a balance between spectral and energy efficiency. In this paper, we have investigated the use of deep learning techniques for detection in RIS-aided received SM (RSM)/received-SSK (RSSK) systems over Weibull fading channels, specifically by extending the RIS-aided SM/SSK system to a specific case of the conventional SM system. By employing the concept of neural networks, the study focuses on model-driven deep learning detection namely block deep neural networks (B-DNN) for RIS-aided SM systems and compares its performance against maximum likelihood (ML) and greedy detectors. Finally, it has been demonstrated by Monte Carlo simulation that while B-DNN achieved a bit error rate (BER) performance close to that of ML, it gave better results than the Greedy detector.

We investigate nonlinear prediction/regression in an online setting and introduce a hybrid model that effectively mitigates, via a joint mechanism through a state space formulation, the need for domain-specific feature engineering issues of conventional nonlinear prediction models and achieves an efficient mix of nonlinear and linear components. In particular, we use recursive structures to extract features from raw sequential sequences and a traditional linear time series model to deal with the intricacies of the sequential data, e.g., seasonality, trends. The state-of-the-art ensemble or hybrid models typically train the base models in a disjoint manner, which is not only time consuming but also sub-optimal due to the separation of modeling or independent training. In contrast, as the first time in the literature, we jointly optimize an enhanced recurrent neural network (LSTM) for automatic feature extraction from raw data and an ARMA-family time series model (SARIMAX) for effectively addressing peculiarities associated with time series data. We achieve this by introducing novel state space representations for the base models, which are then combined to provide a full state space representation of the hybrid or the ensemble. Hence, we are able to jointly optimize both models in a single pass via particle filtering, for which we also provide the update equations. The introduced architecture is generic so that one can use other recurrent architectures, e.g., GRUs, traditional time series-specific models, e.g., ETS or other optimization methods, e.g., EKF, UKF. Due to such novel combination and joint optimization, we demonstrate significant improvements in widely publicized real life competition datasets. We also openly share our code for further research and replicability of our results.

The regulations regarding the Paris Agreement are planned to be adapted soon to keep the global temperature rise within 2 0C. Additionally, integrating renewable energy-based equipment and adopting new ways of producing energy resources, for example Power to Gas technology, becomes essential because of the current environmental and political concerns. Moreover, it is vital to supply the growing energy demand with the increasing population. Uncertainty must be considered in the transition phase since parameters regarding the electricity demand, carbon tax policies, and intermittency of renewable energy-based equipment have intermittent nature. A multi-period two-stage stochastic MILP model is proposed in this work where the wind speed, solar irradiance, temperature, power demand, carbon emission trading (CET) price, and CO2 emission limit are considered uncertain parameters. This model finds one single optimal design for the energy grid while considering several scenarios regarding uncertainties simultaneously. Three stochastic case studies with scenarios including different combinations of the aforementioned uncertain parameters are investigated. Results show that more renewable energy-based equipment with higher rated power values is chosen as the sanctions get stricter. In addition, the optimality of PtG technology is also investigated for a specific location. Implementing the CO2 emission limit as an uncertain parameter instead of including CET price as an uncertain parameter results in lower annual CO2 emission rates and higher net present cost values.

Constructing first-principles models is usually a challenging and time-consuming task due to the complexity of the real-life processes. On the other hand, data-driven modeling, and in particular neural network models often suffer from issues such as overfitting and lack of useful and highquality data. At the same time, embedding trained machine learning models directly into the optimization problems has become an effective and state-of-the-art approach for surrogate optimization, whose performance can be improved by physics-informed training. In this study, it is proposed to upgrade piece-wise linear neural network models with physics informed knowledge for optimization problems with neural network models embedded. In addition to using widely accepted and naturally piece-wise linear rectified linear unit (ReLU) activation functions, this study also suggests piece-wise linear approximations for the hyperbolic tangent activation function to widen the domain. Optimization of three case studies, a blending process, an industrial distillation column and a crude oil column are investigated. For all cases, physics-informed trained neural network based optimal results are closer to global optimality. Finally, associated CPU times for the optimization problems are much shorter than the standard optimization results.

We investigate ensemble methods for prediction in an online setting. Unlike all the literature in ensembling, for the first time, we introduce a new approach using a meta learner that effectively combines the base model predictions via using a superset of the features that is the union of the base models' feature vectors instead of the predictions themselves. Here, our model does not use the predictions of the base models as inputs to a machine learning algorithm, but choose the best possible combination at each time step based on the state of the problem. We explore three different constraint spaces for the ensembling of the base learners that linearly combines the base predictions, which are convex combinations where the components of the ensembling vector are all nonnegative and sum up to 1; affine combinations where the weight vector components are required to sum up to 1; and the unconstrained combinations where the components are free to take any real value. The constraints are both theoretically analyzed under known statistics and integrated into the learning procedure of the meta learner as a part of the optimization in an automated manner. To show the practical efficiency of the proposed method, we employ a gradient-boosted decision tree and a multi-layer perceptron separately as the meta learners. Our framework is generic so that one can use other machine learning architectures as the ensembler as long as they allow for a custom differentiable loss for minimization. We demonstrate the learning behavior of our algorithm on synthetic data and the significant performance improvements over the conventional methods over various real life datasets, extensively used in the well-known data competitions. Furthermore, we openly share the source code of the proposed method to facilitate further research and comparison.

In this study, a novel index modulation based communication system is proposed by combining the recently popular code index modulation-spread spectrum (CIM-SS) and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) techniques. This technique is called CIM-RIS in short. In this proposed system, in addition to the traditional modulated symbols, the spreading code indices also carry data by being embedded in the signal, and the reflection/scattering properties of the signals are voluntarily controlled via the RIS technique. Consequently, the proposed system consumes little energy while transmitting extra bits of information compared to the traditional RIS. Average bit-error error (ABER) analysis of the proposed system is carried out and the system complexity, energy efficiency, and throughput analyses are obtained. Performance analysis of the system is carried out on Rayleigh fading channels for the M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) technique. It has been shown by computer simulations that the CIM-RIS scheme has better error performance, faster data transmission speed, and lower transmission energy, compared to traditional RIS, transmit spatial modulation aided RIS (TSM-RIS) and transmit quadrature spatial modulation based RIS (TQSM-RIS) techniques.

For this, first we introduce a general local fractional derivative operator that involves the mostly used ones in the literature as conformable, alternative, truncated $M-$ and $\mathcal{V}-$fractional derivatives. Then, according to this general operator, a particular Riemannian metric tensor field on the real affine space $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ that is different than Euclidean one is defined. The demands for high data rate, reliability, high energy efficiency, high spectral efficiency, and low latency communication have been increasing rapidly. For this reason, communication models that use limited resources in the best way, allow fast data transmission, and increase performance has become very important. In this work, a novel high energy and spectral efficient reconfigurable intelligent surface aided spatial media-based modulation system, called RIS-SMBM, is proposed for Rayleigh fading channels. In addition to the bits carried in the M-QAM symbol, while media-based modulation (MBM) provides data bits to be carried in the indices of different channels according to the radio frequency (RF) mirrors are on or off, spatial modulation (SM) provides data bits to be carried in the indices of the transmit antennas. By combining these two modulation schemes, the spectral efficiency increases considerably since the amount of information transmitted in the same time interval is substantially increased. The optimal maximum-likelihood (ML) detector and the enhanced low-complexity (ELC) detector for the RIS-SMBM system are proposed. The ELC detector achieves near ML performance while reducing the complexity of the optimal ML detector for the proposed RIS-SMBM system. We analyze the average bit error rate (ABER), throughput, complexity, and energy efficiency for the RIS-SMBM scheme and verify the analytical results with Monte Carlo simulations. It has been observed that the proposed system provides better error performance as well as providing higher spectral and energy efficiency than benchmark systems.

Under current carbon dioxide limitations, this model computes the best configuration of the renewable and non-renewable-based generators, from a large candidate pool containing thirty-nine different equipment, their optimal rated powers, capacities and scheduling sequences. Three different scenarios are generated for a specific location. We observed that photovoltaic, oil co-generator, reciprocating ICE, micro turbine, and bio-gasifier are the equipment that is commonly chosen under the three different scenarios. Results also show that concepts such as green hydrogen and power-to-gas are currently not preferable for the investigated location.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) structures reflect the incident signals by adjusting phase adaptively according to the channel condition where doing transmission in order to increase signal quality at the receiver. Besides, the spatial modulation (SM) technique is a possible candidate for future energy-efficient wireless communications due to providing better throughput, low-cost implementation and good error performance. Also, Alamouti's space-time block coding (ASBC) is an important space and time coding technique in terms of diversity gain and simplified ML detection. In this paper, we proposed the RIS assisted received spatial modulation (RSM) scheme with ASBC, namely RIS-RSM-ASBC. The termed RIS is portioned by two parts in the proposed system model. Each one is utilized as an access point (AP) to transmit its Alamouti coded information while reflecting passive signals to the selected received antenna. The optimal maximum likelihood (ML) detector is designed for the proposed RIS-RSM-ASBC scheme. Extensive computer simulations are conducted to corroborate theoretical derivations. Results show that RIS-RSM-ASBC system is highly reliable and provides data rate enhancement in contrast to conventional RIS assisted transmit SM (RIS-TSM), RIS assisted transmit quadrature SM (RIS-TQSM), RIS assisted received SM (RIS-RSM), RIS assisted transmit space shift keying with ASBC (RIS-TSSK-ASBC) and RIS-TSSK-VBLAST schemes.

We investigate nonlinear prediction in an online setting and introduce a hybrid model that effectively mitigates, via an end-to-end architecture, the need for hand-designed features and manual model selection issues of conventional nonlinear prediction/regression methods. In particular, we use recursive structures to extract features from sequential signals, while preserving the state information, i.e., the history, and boosted decision trees to produce the final output. The connection is in an end-to-end fashion and we jointly optimize the whole architecture using stochastic gradient descent, for which we also provide the backward pass update equations. In particular, we employ a recurrent neural network (LSTM) for adaptive feature extraction from sequential data and a gradient boosting machinery (soft GBDT) for effective supervised regression. Our framework is generic so that one can use other deep learning architectures for feature extraction (such as RNNs and GRUs) and machine learning algorithms for decision making as long as they are differentiable. We demonstrate the learning behavior of our algorithm on synthetic data and the significant performance improvements over the conventional methods over various real life datasets. Furthermore, we openly share the source code of the proposed method to facilitate further research.

Although the theory of the $K^α$-flow holds for spacelike surfaces, the equation describing $K^α$-translators is still valid for timelike surfaces. So we also investigate the timelike rotational surfaces that satisfy the same prescribing Gauss curvature equation.

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are software-controlled passive devices that can be used as relay (R) systems to reflect incoming signals from a source (S) to a destination (D) in a cooperative manner with optimum signal strength to improve the performance of wireless communication networks. The configurability and flexibility of an RIS deployed in an Internet-of-Things (IoT)-based network can enable network designers to devise stand-alone or cooperative configurations that have considerable advantages over conventional networks. In this paper, two new deep neural network (DNN)-assisted cooperative RIS models, namely, DNN_R-CRIS and DNN_{R, D}-CRIS, are proposed for cooperative communications. In DNN_R-CRIS model, the potential of RIS deployment as an IoT-based relay element in a next-generation cooperative network is investigated using deep learning (DL) techniques for RIS phase optimization. In addition, to reduce the maximum likelihood (ML) complexity at D, a new DNN-based symbol detection method is presented with the DNN_{R,D}-CRIS model combined with DNN-assisted phase optimization. For a different number of relays and receiver configurations, the bit error rate (BER) performance results of the proposed DNN_R-CRIS and DNN_{R, D}-CRIS models and traditional cooperative RIS (CRIS) scheme (without a DNN) are presented for a multi-relay cooperative communication scenario with path loss effects. It is revealed that the proposed DNN-based models show promising results in terms of BER, even in high-noise environments with low system complexity.

Locomotion by shape changes (spermatozoon swimming, snake slithering, bird flap**) or gas expulsion (rocket firing) is assumed to require environmental interaction, due to conservation of momentum. As first noted in (Wisdom, 2003) and later in (Guéron, 2009) and (Avron et al, 2006), in curved space or spacetime the non-commutativity of translations permits translation without momentum exchange, just as falling cats and lizards can self-deform to reorient in flat space without environmental interaction. Translation in curved space can occur not only in gravitationally induced curved spacetime (where translation is predicted to be on the order of $10^{-23}$ m per gait cycle) but also in the curved surfaces encountered by locomotors in real-world environments. Here we show that a precision robophysical apparatus consisting of motors driven on curved tracks (and thereby confined to a spherical surface without a solid substrate) can self-propel without environmental momentum exchange (impulse) via shape changes that can generate gauge potentials that manifest as translations. Our system produces shape changes comparable to the environment's inverse curvatures and generates from zero momentum forward movement of $10^{-1}$ cm per gait cycle even while resisted by weak gravitational and frictional forces. Dissipation via friction eventually arrests the robot but also imbues it with momentum which can be released upon a cessation of shape changes. This work demonstrates how the interaction between environmental curvature, active driving and geometric phases yields rich, exotic phenomena.

Serially connected robots are promising candidates for performing tasks in confined spaces such as search-and-rescue in large-scale disasters. Such robots are typically limbless, and we hypothesize that the addition of limbs could improve mobility. However, a challenge in designing and controlling such devices lies in the coordination of high-dimensional redundant modules in a way that improves mobility. Here we develop a general framework to control serially connected multi-legged robots. Specifically, we combine two approaches to build a general shape control scheme which can provide baseline patterns of self-deformation ("gaits") for effective locomotion in diverse robot morphologies. First, we take inspiration from a dimensionality reduction and a biological gait classification scheme to generate cyclic patterns of body deformation and foot lifting/lowering, which facilitate generation of arbitrary substrate contact patterns. Second, we use geometric mechanics methods to facilitates identification of optimal phasing of these undulations to maximize speed and/or stability. Our scheme allows the development of effective gaits in multi-legged robots locomoting on flat frictional terrain with diverse number of limbs (4, 6, 16, and even 0 limbs) and body actuation capabilities (including sidewinding gaits on limbless devices). By properly coordinating the body undulation and the leg placement, our framework combines the advantages of both limbless robots (modularity) and legged robots (mobility). We expect that our framework can provide general control schemes for the rapid deployment of general multi-legged robots, paving the ways toward machines that can traverse complex environments under real-life conditions.

Timed automata (TA) is used for modeling systems with timing aspects. A TA extends a finite automaton with a set of real valued variables called clocks, that measure the time and constraints over the clocks guard the transitions. A parametric TA (PTA) is a TA extension that allows parameters in clock constraints. In this paper, we focus on synthesis of a control strategy and parameter valuation for a PTA such that each run of the resulting TA reaches a target location within the given amount of time while avoiding unsafe locations. We propose an algorithm based on depth first analysis combined with an iterative feasibility check. The algorithm iteratively constructs a symbolic representation of the possible solutions, and employs a feasibility check to terminate the exploration along infeasible directions. Once the construction is completed, a mixed integer linear program is solved for each candidate strategy to generate a parameter valuation and a control strategy pair. We present a robotic planning example to motivate the problem and to illustrate the results.

Emerging systems such as Internet-of-things (IoT) and machine-to-machine (M2M) communications have strict requirements on the power consumption of used equipments and associated complexity in the transceiver design. As a result, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) solutions might not be directly suitable for these system due to their high complexity, inter-antenna synchronization (IAS) requirement, and high inter-antenna interference (IAI) problems. In order to overcome these problems, we propose two novel index modulation (IM) schemes, namely pulse index modulation (PIM) and generalized PIM (GPIM) for single-input single-output (SISO) schemes. The proposed models use well-localized and orthogonal Hermite-Gaussian pulses for data transmission and provide high spectral efficiency owing to the Hermite-Gaussian pulse indices. Besides, it has been shown via analytical derivations and computer simulations that the proposed PIM and GPIM systems have better error performance and considerable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain compared to existing spatial modulation (SM), quadrature SM (QSM), and traditional M-ary systems.

With this new connection, we prove that, besides planes, the singular minimal surfaces which are minimal are the generalized cylinders, providing their explicit equations. A trivial outcome is observed when we use a special semi-symmetric non-metric connection. Furthermore, our discussion is adapted to the Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space.

Active matter physics and swarm robotics have provided powerful tools for the study and control of ensembles driven by internal sources. At the macroscale, controlling swarms typically utilizes significant memory, processing power, and coordination unavailable at the microscale, e.g., for colloidal robots, which could be useful for fighting disease, fabricating intelligent textiles, and designing nanocomputers. To develop principles that that can leverage physics of interactions and thus can be utilized across scales, we take a two-pronged approach: a theoretical abstraction of self-organizing particle systems and an experimental robot system of active cohesive granular matter that intentionally lacks digital electronic computation and communication, using minimal (or no) sensing and control, to test theoretical predictions. We consider the problems of aggregation, dispersion, and collective transport. As predicted by the theory, as a parameter representing interparticle attraction increases, the robots transition from a dispersed phase to an aggregated one, forming a dense, compact collective. When aggregated, the collective can transport non-robot "impurities" in their environment, thus performing an emergent task driven by the physics underlying the transition. These results point to a fruitful interplay between algorithm design and active matter robophysics that can result in new nonequilibrium physics and principles for programming collectives without the need for complex algorithms or capabilities.

We first state that a singular minimal cylinder M^n in R^{n+1} is either a hyperplane or a α-catenary cylinder. It is also shown that this result remains true when M^n is a translation hypersurface and u a horizantal vector. Particles are devised with Q learning algorithm for self training to learn how to act as members of a swarm and how to produce collaborative/collective behaviours. The produced results are supportive to the algorithmic structures suggesting that a substantive collaboration can be build via proposed learning algorithm.

Abstract:
Factorable surfaces, i.e. graphs associated with the product of two functions of one variable, constitute a wide class of surfaces. Such surfaces in the pseudo-Galilean space with zero Gaussian and mean curvature were obtained in [1]. In this study, we provide new classification results relating to the factorable surfaces with non-zero Gaussian and mean curvature.

Abstract:
Total five different types of translation surfaces, based upon planarity of translating curves and the absolute figure, arise in a Galilean 3-space. Excepting the type in which both of translating curves are non-planar we obtain these surfaces with arbitrary constant Gaussian and mean curvature.

Constant curvature factorable surfaces in 3-dimensional isotropic space
Authors:
Muhittin Evren Aydin
Abstract:
In this paper, we study factorable surfaces in a 3-dimensional isotropic space. We classify such surfaces with constant isotropic Gaussian (K) and mean curvature (H). We provide a non-existence result related with the surfaces satisfying H/K=const. Several examples are also illustrated.

In this paper, we extend the notion of affine translation surfaces introduced by Liu and Yu (Proc. Japan Acad. Ser. A Math. In this paper, we extend the notion of affine translation surfaces introduced by Liu and Yu (Proc. Japan Acad. Ser. A Math. We provide that an affine translation hypersurface of constant Gauss-Kronocker curvature K_{0} in R^{n+1} is a cylinder, i.e. K_{0}=0. As further applications we describe such hypersurfaces in the isotropic spaces satisfying certain conditions on the isotropic curvatures and the Laplacian.

Affine translation surfaces in the isotropic 3-space
Authors:
Muhittin Evren Aydin,
Mahmut Ergut
Abstract:
The isotropic 3-space \mathbb{I}^{3} is a real affine 3-space endowed with the metric dx^{2}+dy^{2}. In this paper we describe Weingarten and linear Weingarten affine translation surfaces in \mathbb{I}^{3}. Further we classify the affine translation surfaces in \mathbb{I}^{3} that satisfy certain equations in terms of the position vector and the Laplace operator.
