We propose a modification to the standard hybrid inflation model \cite{Linde:1993cn}, that connects a successful hybrid inflation scenario to the standard model Higgs sector, via the electroweak vacuum stability. The proposed model results in an effective inflation potential of a hilltop-type, with both the trans-Planckian and sub-Planckian inflation regimes consistent with the recent Planck/BICEP combined results. Reheating via the inflation sector decays to right-handed neutrinos is considered. An upper bound on the reheating temperature $T_{\rm R} \lsim 2\times 10^{11}~(1\times 10^{13})$ GeV, for large~(small) field inflation, will suppress contributions from one-loop quantum corrections to the inflation potential. This may push the neutrino Yukawa couplings to be ${\cal O}(1)$ and affect the vacuum stability. We show that the couplings of the SM Higgs to the inflation sector can guarantee the electroweak vacuum stability up to the Planck scale. The so-called hybrid Higgs-inflaton model leads to a positive correction for the Higgs quartic coupling at a threshold scale, which is shown to have a very significant effect in stabilizing the electroweak vacuum. We find that even with ${\cal O}(1)$ neutrino Yukawa couplings, threshold corrections leave the SM vacuum stability intact.

A supervised diagnosis system for digital mammogram is developed. The diagnosis processes are done by transforming the data of the images into a feature vector using wavelets multilevel decomposition. This vector is used as the feature tailored toward separating different mammogram classes. The suggested model consists of artificial neural networks designed for classifying mammograms according to tumor type and risk level. Results are enhanced from our previous study by extracting feature vectors using multilevel decompositions instead of one level of decomposition. Radiologist-labeled images were used to evaluate the diagnosis system. Results are very promising and show possible guide for future work.

We analyze the early-time isotropic cosmology in the so-called energy-momentum-squared gravity (EMSG). In this theory, a $T_{μν}T^{μν}$ term is added to the Einstein-Hilbert action, which has been shown to replace the initial singularity by a regular bounce. We show that this is not the case, and the bouncing solution obtained does not describe our Universe since it belongs to a different solution branch. The solution branch that corresponds to our Universe, while nonsingular, is geodesically incomplete. We analyze the conditions for having viable regular-bouncing solutions in a general class of theories that modify gravity by adding higher order matter terms. Applying these conditions on generalizations of EMSG that add a $\left(T_{μν}T^{μν}\right)^{n}$ term to the action, we show that the case of $n=5/8$ is the only one that can give a viable bouncing solution, while the $n>5/8$ cases suffer from the same problem as EMSG, i.e. they give nonsingular, geodesically incomplete solutions. Furthermore, we show that the $1/2<n<5/8$ cases can provide a nonsingular initially de Sitter solution. Finally, the expanding, geodesically incomplete branch of EMSG or its generalizations can be combined with its contracting counterpart using junction conditions to provide a (weakly) singular bouncing solution. We outline the junction conditions needed for this extension and provide the extended solution explicitly for EMSG. In this sense, EMSG replaces the standard early-time singularity by a singular bounce instead of a regular one.

They are characterized by cylindrical, toroidal or flat horizons, depending on global identifications. The static charged black hole configurations obtained in \cite{Awad:2017tyz} are recovered as special cases when the rotation parameters vanish. Similar to \cite{Awad:2017tyz} the static black holes solutions have two different electric multipole terms in the potential with related moments. Furthermore, these solutions have milder singularities compared to their general relativity counterparts. Using the conserved charges expressions obtained in \cite{Ulhoa:2013gca} and \cite{Maluf:2008ug} we calculate the total mass/energy and the angular momentum of these solutions.

The interesting feature of these solutions is the existence of inseparable electric monopole and quadrupole terms in the potential which share related momenta, in contrast with most of the known charged black hole solutions in General Relativity and its extensions. Furthermore, these solutions have curvature singularities which are milder than those of the known charged black hole solutions in General Relativity and Teleparallel Gravity. This feature can be shown by calculating some invariants of curvature and torsion tensors. Furthermore, we calculate the total energy of these black holes using the energy-momentum tensor. Finally, we show that these charged black hole solutions violate the first law of thermodynamics in agreement with previous results.

A comparison with predictions from state-of-the-art first-principle calculations shows agreement with our measurement. The radiation energy provides direct access to the calorimetric energy in the electromagnetic cascade of extensive air showers. Comparison with our result thus allows the direct calibration of any cosmic-ray radio detector against the well-established energy scale of the Pierre Auger Observatory.

The Auger Engineering Radio Array (AERA) is part of the Pierre Auger Observatory and is used to detect the radio emission of cosmic-ray air showers. These observations are compared to the data of the surface detector stations of the Observatory, which provide well-calibrated information on the cosmic-ray energies and arrival directions. The response of the radio stations in the 30 to 80 MHz regime has been thoroughly calibrated to enable the reconstruction of the incoming electric field. For the latter, the energy deposit per area is determined from the radio pulses at each observer position and is interpolated using a two-dimensional function that takes into account signal asymmetries due to interference between the geomagnetic and charge-excess emission components. The spatial integral over the signal distribution gives a direct measurement of the energy transferred from the primary cosmic ray into radio emission in the AERA frequency range. We measure 15.8 MeV of radiation energy for a 1 EeV air shower arriving perpendicularly to the geomagnetic field. This radiation energy -- corrected for geometrical effects -- is used as a cosmic-ray energy estimator. Performing an absolute energy calibration against the surface-detector information, we observe that this radio-energy estimator scales quadratically with the cosmic-ray energy as expected for coherent emission. We find an energy resolution of the radio reconstruction of 22% for the data set and 17% for a high-quality subset containing only events with at least five radio stations with signal.

In both cases, the resulting thermodynamic quantities satisfy the first law of thermodynamics. We point out that the reason for the violation of the first law in previous calculations is that the rotating Einstein universe, used as a boundary metric, was rotating with an angular velocity that depends on the black hole rotation parameter. Using a new coordinate system with a boundary metric that has an arbitrary angular velocity, one can show that the resulting physical quantities satisfy the first law.

The solutions we obtained depend on two extra parameters other than the mass and the nut charge. These two parameters are the electric charge, q and the electric potential at infinity, V, which has a non-trivial contribution. We Analyze the conditions one can impose to obtain Taub-Nut or Taub-Bolt space-times, including the four-dimensional case. We found that in the nut case these conditions coincide with that coming from the regularity of the one-form potential at the horizon. Furthermore, the mass parameter for the higher dimensional solutions depends on the nut charge and the electric charge or the potential at infinity.

We find one class of such four-derivative terms with N=2 supersymmetry which, though locally on the Coulomb branch can be written solely in terms of field strengths, globally cannot be. These terms are classified by certain Dolbeault cohomology classes on the moduli space. We include a discussion of other examples of terms in the effective action involving global obstructions on the Coulomb branch.

We show how to systematically construct higher-derivative terms in effective actions in harmonic superspace despite the infinite redundancy in their description due to the infinite number of auxiliary fields. Making an assumption about the absence of certain superspace Chern-Simons-like terms involving vector multiplets, we write all 3- and 4-derivative terms on Higgs, Coulomb, and mixed branches. Among these terms are several with only holomorphic dependence on fields, and at least one satisfies a non-renormalization theorem. These holomorphic terms include a novel 3-derivative term on mixed branches given as an integral over 3/4 of superspace. As an illustration of our method, we search for Wess-Zumino terms in the low energy effective action of N=2 supersymmetric QCD. We show that such terms occur only on mixed branches. We also present an argument showing that the combination of space-time locality with supersymmetry implies locality in the anticommuting superspace coordinates of for unconstrained superfields.

Using the counterterm subtraction technique we calculatehe stress-energy tensor, action, and other physical quantities for Kerr-AdS black holes in various dimensions. For Kerr-AdS_5 with both rotation parameters non-zero, we demonstrate that stress-energy tensor, in the zero mass parameter limit, is equal to the stress tensor of the weakly coupled four dimensional dual field theory. As a result, the total energy of the generalKerr-AdS_5 black hole at zero mass parameter, exactly matches the Casimir energy of the dual field theory. We show that at high temperature, the general Kerr-AdS_5 and perturbative field theory stress-energy tensors are equal, up to the usual factor of 3/4. We also use the counterterm technique to calculate the stress tensors and actions for Kerr-AdS_6, and Kerr-AdS_7 black holes, with one rotation parameter, and we display the results. We discuss the conformal anomalies of the field theories dual to the Kerr-AdS_5 and Kerr-AdS_7 spacetimes. In these two field theories, we show that the rotation parameters break conformal invariance but not scale invariance, a novel result for a non-trivial field theory. For Kerr-AdS_7 the conformal anomalies calculated on the gravity side and the dual (0,2) tensor multiplet theory are equal up to 4/7 factor. We expect that the Casimir energy of the free field theory is the same as the energy of the Kerr-AdS_7 black hole (with zero mass parameter), up to that factor.

We present two examples of non-trivial field theories which are scale invariant, but not conformally invariant. This is done by placing certain field theories, which are conformally invariant in flat space, onto curved backgrounds of a specific type. We define this using the AdS/CFT correspondence, which relates the physics of gravity in asymptotically Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetimes to that of a conformal field theory (CFT) in one dimension fewer. The AdS rotating (Kerr) black holes in five and seven dimensions provide us with the examples, since by the correspondence we are able to define and compute the action and stress tensor of four and six dimensional field theories residing on rotating Einstein universes, using the ``boundary counterterm'' method. The rotation breaks conformal but not scale invariance. The AdS/CFT framework is therefore a natural arena for generating such examples of non-trivial scale invariant theories which are not conformally invariant.

We use the counterterm subtraction method to calculate the action and stress-energy-momentum tensor for the (Kerr) rotating black holes in AdS_{n+1}, for n=2, 3 and 4. We demonstrate that the expressions for the total energy for the Kerr-AdS_3 and Kerr-AdS_5 spacetimes, in the limit of vanishing black hole mass, are equal to the Casimir energies of the holographically dual n-dimensional conformal field theories. In particular, for Kerr-AdS_5, dual to the case of four dimensional N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on the rotating Einstein universe, we explicitly verify the equality of the zero mass stress tensor from the two sides of the correspondence, and present the result for general mass as a prediction from gravity. Amusingly, it is observed in four dimensions that while the trace of the stress tensor defined using the standard counterterms does not vanish, its integral does, thereby kee** the action free of ultraviolet divergences. Using a different regularisation scheme another stress tensor can be defined, which is traceless.
