In quantum mechanics, the measureable quantities of a given theory are predicted by performing a weighted sum over possibilities. We show how to arrange the possibilities into bundles such that the associated subsums can be viewed as well-defined theories on their own right. These bundles are submani$\textit{folds}$ of $\textit{possi}$bilities which we call possifolds. We collect and prove some basic facts about possifolds. Especially, we show that possifolds are ensembles of what in a certain broadly defined sense that we explain can be regarded as soliton excitations (soliton-possifold correspondence). We provide an outlook on some applications. Among other things, we illustrate the use of the developed framework for the example of the Lieb-Liniger model. It describes non-relativistic bosons with an attractive interaction. We derive a dual theory describing the lowest-lying energy excitation modes. While the standard Bogoliubov-approximation breaks down at the critical point, our derived summation prescription stays regular. In the Bogoliubov-limit we observe the summation to possess an enhanced symmetry at this point while the summation cannot be ignored there. We finally provide a glimpse on the restrictions black hole physics implies in this context for the gravitational path integral.

Diamond properties down to the quantum-size region are still poorly understood. High-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) synthesis from chloroadamantane molecules allows precise control of nanodiamond size. Thermal stability and optical properties of nanodiamonds with sizes spanning range from $<$1 to 8 nm are investigated. It is shown that hypothesis about enhanced thermal stability of nanodiamonds smaller than 2 nm is incorrect. The most striking feature in IR absorption of these samples is the appearance of an enhanced transmission band near the diamond Raman mode (1332 cm$^{-1}$). Following previously proposed explanation, we attribute this phenomenon to the Fano-effect caused by resonance of diamond Raman mode with continuum of conductive surface states. We assume that these surface states may be formed by reconstruction of broken bonds on the nanodiamond surfaces. This effect is also responsible for the observed asymmetry of Raman scattering peak. he mechanism of nanodiamond formation in HPHT synthesis is proposed, explaining pecularities of their structure and properties.

We revisit Carlip's approach to entropy counting. This analysis reemerged in a recently obtained Schwarzschild/CFT-correspondence as Sugawara-construction of a 2D stress-tensor. Here, for the example of a Schwarzschild black hole, we show how to single out diffeomorphisms forming in contrast to Carlip's analysis the full 2D local conformal algebra. We provide arguments, why their Hamiltonian generators are expected to be the symmetry generators of a possible conformal field theory describing the part of phase space responsible for black hole microstates. Then, we can infer central charges and temperatures of this CFT by inspecting the algebra of these Hamiltonian generators. Using this data in the Cardy-formula, precise agreement with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is found. Alternatively, we obtain the same CFT temperatures by thermodynamic considerations. Altogether, this suggests that the Hamiltonian generators need no corrections through possible non-canonical counterterms. We comment on the related recent work by Haco, Hawking, Perry, Strominger.

Recent studies of asymptotic symmetries suggest, that a Hamiltonian phase space analysis in gravitational theories might be able to account for black hole microstates. In this context we explain, why the use of conventional Bondi fall-off conditions for the gravitational field is too restrictive in the presence of an event horizon. This implies an enhancement of physical degrees of freedom ($\mathcal{A}$-modes). They provide new gravitational hair and are responsible for black hole microstates. Using covariant phase space methods, for the example of a Schwarzschild black hole, we give a proposal for the surface degrees of freedom and their surface charge algebra. The obtained two-dimensional dual theory is conjectured to be conformally invariant as motivated from the criticality of the black hole. Carlip's approach to entropy counting reemerges as a Sugawara-construction of a 2D stress-tensor.

Degrees of freedom that carry black hole entropy and hair can be described in the language of Goldstone phenomenon. They represent the pseudo-Goldstone bosons of certain supertranslations, called A-transformations, that are spontaneously broken by the black hole metric. This breaking gives rise to a tower of Goldstone bosons created by the spontaneously-broken generators that can be labeled by spherical harmonics. Classically, the number of charges is infinite, they have vanishing VEVs and the corresponding Goldstone modes are gapless. The resulting hair and entropy are infinite, but unresolvable. In quantum theory the two things happen. The number of legitimate Goldstone modes restricted by requirement of weak-coupling, becomes finite and scales as black hole area in Planck units. The Goldstones generate a tiny gap, controlled by their gravitational coupling. The gap turns out to be equal to the inverse of black hole half-life, $t_{BH}$. Correspondingly, in quantum theory the charges are neither conserved nor vanish, but non-conservation time is set by $t_{BH}$. This picture nicely matches with the idea of a black hole as of critical system composed of many soft gravitons. The A-Goldstones of geometric picture represent the near-gapless Bogoliubov-Goldstone modes of critical soft-graviton system.

We discuss BMS supertranslations both at null-infinity and on the horizon for the case of the Schwarzschild black hole. We show that both kinds of supertranslations lead to infinetly many gapless physical excitations. On this basis we construct a quotient algebra using suited superpositions of both kinds of transformations which cannot be compensated by an ordinary BMS-supertranslation and therefore are intrinsically due to the presence of an event horizon. We show that these quotient transformations are physical and generate gapless excitations on the horizon that can account for the gravitational hair as well as for the black hole entropy. We identify the physics of these modes as associated with Bogolioubov-Goldstone modes due to quantum criticality. Classically the number of these gapless modes is infinite. However, we show that due to quantum criticality the actual amount of information-carriers becomes finite and consistent with Bekenstein entropy. Although we only consider the case of Schwarzschild geometry, the arguments are extendable to arbitrary space-times containing event horizons.

We present two approaches for studying the uniformity of a tunnel barrier. The first approach is based on measuring single-electron and two-electron tunneling in a hybrid single-electron transistor. Our measurements indicate that the effective area of a conduction channel is about one order of magnitude larger than predicted by theoretical calculations. With the second method, transmission electron microscopy, we demonstrate that variations in the barrier thickness are a plausible explanation for the larger effective area and an enhancement of higher order tunneling processes.

We introduce an approach to automatic indexing of e-prints based on a pattern-matching technique making extensive use of an Associative Patterns Dictionary (APD), developed by us. Entries in the APD consist of natural language phrases with the same semantic interpretation as a set of keywords from a controlled vocabulary. The method also allows to recognize within e-prints formulae written in TeX notations that might also appear as keywords. We present an automatic indexing system, AUTEX, which we have applied to keyword index e-prints in selected areas in high energy physics (HEP) making use of the DESY-HEPI thesaurus as a controlled vocabulary.
