Anisotropy is an intrinsic factor that dictates the magnetic properties of YBCO, thus with great impact for many applications. Artificial pinning centres are often introduced in an attempt to mitigate its effect, resulting in less anisotropic electrical and magnetic properties. However, the nanoengineering of the superconductor makes the quantification of the anisotropy itself uncertain: the intrinsic anisotropy due to the layered structure, quantified by the anisotropy factor $γ$, mixes up with the additional anisotropy due to pinning. As a consequence, there is no consensus on the experimental anisotropy factor $γ$ that can result in YBCO when directional (twin planes, nanorods) or isotropic defects are present. We present here measurements of the magnetic field and angular dependent surface impedance in very different nanostructured YBCO films, grown by chemical route and by pulsed laser deposition, with different kind of defects (nanorods, twin planes, nanoparticles). We show that the surface impedance measurements are able to disentangle the intrinsic anisotropy from the directional pinning anisotropy, thanks to the possibility to extract the true anisotropic flux--flow resistivity and by correctly exploiting the angular scaling. We find in all films that the intrinsic anisotropy $γ= 5.3\pm0.7$. By contrast, the pinning anisotropy determines a much complex, feature--rich and nonuniversal, sample--dependent angular landscape.

We present the angular dependence of the vortex viscosity $η$, the pinning constant k_p and the upper limit for the creep factor χ_M. We show that the directional effect of the nanorods is absent in η, which is dictated by the mass anisotropy γ. By contrast, pinning-mediated properties are strongly affected by the nanorods. It is significant that the pinning and creep affected by the nanorods is detectable also at our very high operating frequency, which implies very short-range displacements of the vortices from their equilibrium position.

Comparison of the dynamics at different time scales shows evidence for a transition of the vortex matter toward a Mott phase, driven by the presence of nanorods. The strong pinning in dc arises partially from a dynamic effect.

We report a detailed study performed on La2Zr2O7 (LZO) pyrochlore material grown by Metal-Organic Decomposition (MOD) method as buffer layers for YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) coated conductors. High quality epitaxial LZO thin films have been obtained on single crystal (SC) and Ni-5%at.W substrates. In order to evaluate structural and morphological properties, films have been characterized by means of X-ray diffraction analyses (XRD), atomic force microscope (AFM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Precursors solutions and heat treatments have been studied by thermogravimetric analyses (TG-DTA-DTG) and infrared spectra (FT-IR) with the aim of optimizing the annealing process. Thin films of YBCO have been deposited by pulsed laser ablation (PLD) on this buffer layers. The best results obtained on SC showed YBCO films with critical temperature values above 90 K, high self field critical current density values (Jc > 1 MA/cm2) and high irreversibility field values (8.3 T) at 77 K together with a rather high depinning frequency vp (0.5 T, 77 K)>44 GHz as determined at microwaves. The best results on Ni-5%at.W has been obtained introducing in the heat treatment a pyrolysis process at low temperature in air in order to remove the residual organic part of the precursor solution.

BaZrO$_3$ inclusions self-assemble to give nanorods oriented along the c-axis, thus giving a preferential direction for vortex pinning. The directionality of vortex response is studied at high ac frequency with the complex microwave response at 48 GHz, as a function of the applied field and of the angle $θ$ between the field and the c-axis. The complex microwave response does not exhibit any angular scaling, suggesting that the structural anisotropy of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ is supplemented by at least another preferred orientation. The pinning parameter $r$ shows evidence of directional pinning, effective in a wide range of angles around the c-axis (thus ascribed to BZO nanocolumns).

We find that BZO nanorods are very efficient pinning centers, even in tilted fields. We find that $ρ_{ff}$ is a scaling function of a reduced field $H/f(θ)$. We extend a model for the anisotropic motion of vortices in uniaxially anisotropic superconductor, able to describe the experimental $f(θ)$ on the basis of only the intrinsic anisotropy of YBCO. The pinning constant $k_p$, by contrast, exhibits different field dependences in different angular ranges, consistent with pinning by BZO at angles as large as 60$^{\circ}$, and with pinning along the $a,b$ planes as originating from the same mechanism as in pure YBCO with the field along the c axis.

We measured the field increase of the surface resistance $R_{\rm s}(H)$ in the a-b plane at 48.3 GHz. Measurements were performed at fixed temperatures in the range 70 K - $T_{\rm c}$ with a static magnetic field $μ_0H<0.8$ T parallel to the c-axis. Low field steep increase of the dissipation, typical signature of the presence of weak links, is absent, thus indicating the single-domain behaviour of the sample under study. The magnetic field dependence of $R_{\rm s}(H)$ is ascribed to the dissipation caused by vortex motion. The analysis of $X_{\rm s}(H)$ points to a free-flow regime, thus allowing to obtain the vortex viscosity as a function of temperature. We compare the results with those obtained on RE-BCO systems. In particular, we consider strongly pinned films of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\rmδ}$ with nanometric BaZrO$_3$ inclusions.

We report on the field dependence of the microwave complex resistivity data in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$/BaZrO$_3$ films grown by PLD at various BaZrO$_3$ content. The data, analyzed within a recently developed general framework for the mixed-state microwave response of superconductors, yield the field dependence of the fluxon parameters such as the vortex viscosity and the pinning constant. We find that pinning undergoes a change of regime when the BaZrO$_3$ content in the target increases from 2.5 mol.% to 5 mol.%. Simultaneously, the vortex viscosity becomes an increasing function of the applied magnetic field. We propose a scenario in which flux lines are pinned as bundles, and a crossover from dilute point pins to dense c-axis correlated defects takes place between 2.5 and 5 mol.% in the BZO concentration. Our data are inconsistent with vortices occupying mainly the BaZrO$_3$ sites at low fields, and suggest instead that vortices occupy both BaZrO$_3$ sites and interstitials in the YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ matrix, even at low fields.

In order to study the vortex pinning determined by artificially introduced pinning centers in the small-vortex displacement regime, we measured the microwave surface impedance at 47.7 GHz in the mixed state of YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ thin films, where sub-micrometric BaZrO$_3$ particles have been incorporated. As a function of the BaZrO$_3$ content, we observe that the absolute losses slightly decrease up to a BaZrO$_3$ content of 5%, and then increase. We found that the magnetic-field-induced losses behave differently, in that they are not monotonic with increasing BaZrO$_3$ concentration: at small concentration (2.5%) the field-induced losses increase, but large reduction of the losses themselves, by factors up to 3, is observed upon further increasing the BaZrO$_3$ concentration in the target up to 7%. Using measurements of both surface resistance and surface reactance we estimate vortex pinning-related parameters. We find that BaZrO$_3$ inclusions introduce deep and steep pinning wells. In particular, the minimum height of the energy barrier for single vortices is raised. At larger BaZrO$_3$ content (5% and 7%) the phenomenon is at its maximum, but it is unclear whether it shows a saturation or not, thus leaving room for further improvements.

BaZrO$_3$ crystallites were included in the films using composite targets containing BaZrO$_3$ inclusions with mean grain size smaller than 1 $μ$m. X-ray diffraction showed single epitaxial relationship between BaZrO$_3$ and YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$. The effective surface resistance was measured at 47.7 GHz for 60$< T <$90 K and 0$< μ_0H <$0.8 T. The magnetic field had a very different effect on pristine YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ and YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$/BaZrO$_3$, while for $μ_0H=$0 only a reduction of $T_c$ in the YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$/BaZrO$_3$ film was observed, consistent with dc measurements. At low enough $T$, in moderate fields YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$/BaZrO$_3$ exhibited an intrinsic thin film resistance lower than the pure film. The results clearly indicate that BaZrO$_3$ inclusions determine a strong reduction of the field-dependent surface resistance. From the analysis of the data in the framework of simple models for the microwave surface impedance in the mixed state we argue that BaZrO$_3$ inclusions determine very steep pinning potentials.

Measurements of the microwave surface impedance indicate a broadened transition in zero field, however compensated by a very large pinning frequency, indicating that while intergrain properties are still to be optimized the effect of nanometric inclusions substantially enhances the intragrain vortex pinning.
