Abstract:
In this note, we extend the detailed study of the linearized dynamics obtained for cnoidal waves of the Korteweg--de Vries equation in \cite{JFA-R} to small-amplitude periodic traveling waves of the generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations that are not subject to Benjamin--Feir instability. With the adapted notion of stability, this provides for such waves, global-in-time bounded stability in any Sobolev space, and asymptotic stability of dispersive type. When doing so, we actually prove that such results also hold for waves of arbitrary amplitude satisfying a form of spectral stability designated here as dispersive spectral stability.

On the sharp regularity of solutions to hyperbolic boundary value problems

We prove some sharp regularity results for solutions of classical first order hyperbolic initial boundary value problems. Our two main improvements on the existing litterature are weaker regularity assumptions for the boundary data and regularity in fractional Sobolev spaces. This last point is specially interesting when the regularity index belongs to 1/2 + N, as it involves nonlocal compatibilit…

The present contribution contains a quite extensive theory for the stability analysis of plane periodic waves of general Schr{ö}dinger equations. On one hand, we put the one-dimensional theory, or in other words the stability theory for longitudinal perturbations, on a par with the one available for systems of Korteweg type, including results on co-periodic spectral instability, nonlinear co-periodic orbital stability, side-band spectral instability and linearized large-time dynamics in relation with modulation theory, and resolutions of all the involved assumptions in both the small-amplitude and large-period regimes. On the other hand, we provide extensions of the spectral part of the latter to the multi-dimensional context. Notably, we provide suitable multi-dimensional modulation formal asymptotics, validate those at the spectral level and use them to prove that waves are always spectrally unstable in both the small-amplitude and the large-period regimes.

On the time of existence of solutions of the Euler-Korteweg system
Authors:
Corentin Audiard
Abstract:
Under a natural stability condition on the pressure, it is known that for small irrotational initial data, the solutions of the Euler-Korteweg system are global in time. When the initial velocity has a small rotational part, we obtain a lower bound on the time of existence that depends only on the rotational part. In the zero vorticity limit we recover the previous global well-posedness result. In…

When the initial velocity has a small rotational part, we obtain a lower bound on the time of existence that depends only on the rotational part. In the zero vorticity limit we recover the previous global well-posedness result. Independently of this analysis, we also provide (in a special case) a simple example of solution that blows up in finite time.

Existence of multi-traveling waves in capillary fluids
Authors:
Corentin Audiard
Abstract:
We prove the existence of multi-soliton and kink-multi-soliton solutions of the Euler-Korteweg system in dimension one. Such solutions behaves asymptotically in time like several traveling waves far away from each other. A kink is a traveling wave with different limits at $\pm$$\infty$. The main assumption is the linear stability of the solitons, and we prove that this assumption is satisfied at l…

Such solutions behaves asymptotically in time like several traveling waves far away from each other. A kink is a traveling wave with different limits at $\pm$$\infty$. The main assumption is the linear stability of the solitons, and we prove that this assumption is satisfied at least in the transonic limit. The proof relies on a classical approach based on energy estimates and a compactness argument.

We consider the Schrödinger equation on a half space in any dimension with a class of nonhomogeneous boundary conditions including Dirichlet, Neuman and the so-called transparent boundary conditions. Building upon recent local in time Strichartz estimates (for Dirichlet boundary conditions), we obtain global Strichartz estimates for initial data in $H^s,\ 0\leq s\leq 2$ and boundary data in a natural space $\mathcal{H}^s$. For $s\geq 1/2$, the issue of compatibility conditions requires a thorough analysis of the $\mathcal{H}^s$ space. As an application we solve nonlinear Schrödinger equations and construct global asymptotically linear solutions for small data. A discussion is included on the appropriate notion of scattering in this framework, and the optimality of the $\mathcal{H}^s$ space.

We investigate the existence and properties of traveling waves for the Euler-Korteweg system with general capillarity and pressure. Our main result is the existence in dimension two of waves with arbitrarily small energy. They are obtained as minimizers of a modified energy with fixed momentum. The proof follows various ideas developed for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (and more generally nonlinear Schrödinger equations with non zero limit at infinity). Even in the Schrödinger case, the fact that we work with the hydrodynamical variables and a general pressure law both brings new difficulties and some simplifications. Independently, in dimension one we prove that the criterion for the linear instability of traveling waves from [6] actually implies nonlinear instability.

The Euler-Korteweg equations are a modification of the Euler equations that takes into account capillary effects. In the general case they form a quasi-linear system that can be recast as a degenerate Schrödinger type equation. The Euler-Korteweg equations are a modification of the Euler equations that takes into account capillary effects. In the general case they form a quasi-linear system that can be recast as a degenerate Schrödinger type equation. Local well-posedness (in subcritical Sobolev spaces) was obtained by Benzoni-Danchin-Descombes in any space dimension, however, except in some special case (semi-linear with particular pressure) no global well-posedness is known. We prove here that under a natural stability condition on the pressure, global well-posedness holds in dimension $d\geq 3$ for small irrotational initial data. The proof is based on a modified energy estimate, standard dispersive properties if $d\geq 5$, and a careful study of the nonlinear structure of the quadratic terms in dimension $3$ and $4$ involving the theory of space time resonance.
