We propose a counterpart of the classical Rollnik-class of potentials for fractional and massive relativistic Laplacians, and describe this space in terms of appropriate Riesz potentials. These definitions rely on precise resolvent estimates. We show that Coulomb-type potentials are elements of fractional Rollnik-class up to but not including the critical singularity of the Hardy potential. For the operators with fractional exponent $α= 1$ there exists no fractional Rollnik potential, however, in low dimensions we make sense of these classes as limiting cases by using $Γ$-convergence. In a second part of the paper we derive detailed results on the self-adjointness and spectral properties of relativistic Schrödinger operators obtained under perturbations by fractional Rollnik potentials. We also define an extended fractional Rollnik-class which is the maximal space for the Hilbert-Schmidt property of the related Birman-Schwinger operators.

We consider Kolmogorov-Fokker-Planck equations with unbounded drift terms which are only measurable in time and locally Hölder continuous in space. This paper makes two contributions to the field of text-based patent similarity. First, it compares the performance of different kinds of patent-specific pretrained embedding models, namely static word embeddings (such as word2vec and doc2vec models) and contextual word embeddings (such as transformers based models), on the task of patent similarity calculation. Second, it compares specifically the performance of Sentence Transformers (SBERT) architectures with different training phases on the patent similarity task. To assess the models' performance, we use information about patent interferences, a phenomenon in which two or more patent claims belonging to different patent applications are proven to be overlap** by patent examiners. Therefore, we use these interferences cases as a proxy for maximum similarity between two patents, treating them as ground-truth to evaluate the performance of the different embedding models. Our results point out that, first, Patent SBERT-adapt-ub, the domain adaptation of the pretrained Sentence Transformer architecture proposed in this research, outperforms the current state-of-the-art in patent similarity. Second, they show that, in some cases, large static models performances are still comparable to contextual ones when trained on extensive data; thus, we believe that the superiority in the performance of contextual embeddings may not be related to the actual architecture but rather to the way the training phase is performed.

The problem of disambiguation of company names poses a significant challenge in extracting useful information from patents. This issue biases research outcomes as it mostly underestimates the number of patents attributed to companies, particularly multinational corporations which file patents under a plethora of names, including alternate spellings of the same entity and, eventually, companies' subsidiaries. To date, addressing these challenges has relied on labor-intensive dictionary based or string matching approaches, leaving the problem of patents' assignee harmonization on large datasets mostly unresolved. To bridge this gap, this paper describes the Terrorizer algorithm, a text-based algorithm that leverages natural language processing (NLP), network theory, and rule-based techniques to harmonize the variants of company names recorded as patent assignees. In particular, the algorithm follows the tripartite structure of its antecedents, namely parsing, matching and filtering stage, adding an original "knowledge augmentation" phase which is used to enrich the information available on each assignee name. We use Terrorizer on a set of 325'917 companies' names who are assignees of patents granted by the USPTO from 2005 to 2022. The performance of Terrorizer is evaluated on four gold standard datasets. This validation step shows us two main things: the first is that the performance of Terrorizer is similar over different kind of datasets, proving that our algorithm generalizes well. Second, when comparing its performance with the one of the algorithm currently used in PatentsView for the same task (Monath et al., 2021), it achieves a higher F1 score. Finally, we use the Tree-structured Parzen Estimator (TPE) optimization algorithm for the hyperparameters' tuning. Our final result is a reduction in the initial set of names of over 42%.

In this paper, we consider the time change of the diffusion process on the 2-dimensional unit sphere generated by the Laplace-Beltrami operator, perturbed by means of a longitudinal vector field. First, this is done by addressing the problem of finding strong solutions to suitable time-nonlocal Kolmogorov equations, via a spectral decomposition approach. Next, the desired process is constructed as the composition of the aforementioned diffusion process and the inverse of a subordinator, and it is used to provide a stochastic representation of the solution of the involved time-nonlocal Kolmogorov equation, which in turn leads to the spectral decomposition of its probability density function. A family of operators induced by the process is then adopted to provide very weak solutions of the same time-nonlocal Kolmogorov equation with much less regular initial data. From the spectral decomposition results we also get some bounds on the speed of convergence to the stationary state, proving that the process can be considered an anomalous diffusion. These results improve some known ones in terms of both the presence of a perturbation and the lack of regularity of the initial data.

This paper delves into the impact of natural disasters on affected populations and underscores the imperative of reducing disaster-related fatalities through proactive strategies. On average, approximately 45,000 individuals succumb annually to natural disasters amid a surge in economic losses. The paper explores catastrophe models for loss projection, emphasizes the necessity of evaluating volatility in disaster risk, and introduces an innovative model that integrates historical data, addresses data skewness, and accommodates temporal dependencies to forecast shifts in mortality. To this end, we introduce a time-varying skew Brownian motion model, for which we provide proof of the solution's existence and uniqueness. In this model, parameters change over time, and past occurrences are integrated via volatility.

In this article densities (and their derivatives) of subordinators and inverse subordinators are considered. Under minor restrictions, generally milder than the existing in the literature, using a useful modification of the saddle point method, we obtain the large asymptotic behaviour of these densities (and their derivatives) for a specific region of space and time and quantify how the ratio between time and space affects the explicit speed of convergence. The asymptotics is governed by an exponential term depending on the Laplace exponent of the subordinator and the region represents the behaviour of the subordinator when it is atypically small (the inverse one is larger than usual). As a result a route to the derivation of novel general or particular fine estimates for densities with explicit constants in the speed of convergence in the region of the lower envelope/the law of iterated logarithm is available. Furthermore, under mild conditions, we provide a power series representation for densities (and their derivatives) of subordinators and inverse subordinators. This representation is explicit and based on the derivatives of the convolution of the tails of the corresponding Lévy measure, whose smoothness is also investigated. In this context the methods adopted are based on Laplace inversion and strongly rely on the theory of Bernstein functions extended to the cut complex plane. As a result, smoothness properties of densities (and their derivatives) and their behaviour near zero immediately follow.

We analyze the problem of controlling a multi-agent system with additive white noise through parsimonious interventions on a selected subset of the agents (leaders). For such a controlled system with a SDE constraint, we introduce a rigorous limit process towards an infinite dimensional optimal control problem constrained by the coupling of a system of ODE for the leaders with a McKean-Vlasov-type SDE, governing the dynamics of the prototypical follower. The latter is, under some assumptions on the distribution of the initial data, equivalent with a (nonlinear parabolic) PDE-ODE system. The derivation of the limit mean-field optimal control problem is achieved by linking the mean-field limit of the governing equations together with the $Γ$-limit of the cost functionals for the finite dimensional problems.

We provide a notion of solution for this equation and we study well-posedness under Dirichlet conditions outside the domain. A maximum principle is proved and used to derive uniqueness and continuity with respect to the initial datum of the solutions of the Dirichlet problem. Existence is proved by showing a stochastic representation based on the delayed Brownian motion killed on the boundary. Related properties on crossing probabilities of the delayed Brownian motion are obtained. The asymptotic behaviour of the mean square displacement of the process is determined, showing that the diffusive behaviour is anomalous.

In this paper we introduce a new approach to discrete-time semi-Markov decision processes based on the sojourn time process. Different characterizations of discrete-time semi-Markov processes are exploited and decision processes are constructed by their means. With this new approach, the agent is allowed to consider different actions depending also on the sojourn time of the process in the current state. A numerical method based on $Q$-learning algorithms for finite horizon reinforcement learning and stochastic recursive relations is investigated. Finally, we consider two toy examples: one in which the reward depends on the sojourn-time, according to the gambler's fallacy; the other in which the environment is semi-Markov even if the reward function does not depend on the sojourn time. These are used to carry on some numerical evaluations on the previously presented $Q$-learning algorithm and on a different naive method based on deep reinforcement learning.

We consider a linear stochastic differential equation with stochastic drift and multiplicative noise. We study the problem of approximating its solution with the process that solves the equation where the possibly stochastic drift is replaced by a deterministic function. To do this, we use a combination of deterministic Pontryagin's maximum principle approach and direct methods of calculus of variations. We find necessary and sufficient conditions for a function $u \in L^1(0,T)$ to be a minimizer of a certain cost functional. To overcome the problem of the existence of such minimizer, we also consider suitable families of penalized coercive cost functionals. Finally, we consider the important example of the quadratic cost functional, showing that the expected value of the drift component is not always the best choice in the mean squared error approximation.

This allows an analysis of their behaviour at short to mid-range from the origin. In a first part we derive precise estimates on these two functionals for stable and relativistic stable processes. Next, by combining scaling properties and heat kernel estimates, we derive explicit local rates of the ground states of the given family of non-local Schrödinger operators both inside and outside the well. We also show how this approach extends to fully supported decaying potentials. By an analysis close-by to the edge of the potential well, we furthermore show that the ground state changes regularity, which depends qualitatively on the fractional power of the non-local operator.

The purpose of this paper is to give a systematic description of potentials decaying to zero at infinity, which generate eigenvalues at the edge of the absolutely continuous spectrum when combined with non-local operators defined by Bernstein functions of the Laplacian. By introducing suitable Hölder-Zygmund type spaces with different scale functions than usual, we study the action of these non-local Schrödinger operators in terms of second-order centered differences of eigenfunctions integrated with respect to singular kernels. First we obtain conditions under which the potentials decay at all, and are bounded continuous functions. Next we derive decay rates at infinity separately for operators with regularly varying and exponentially light Lèvy jump kernels. We show situations in which no decay occurs, implying that zero-energy eigenfunctions with specific decay properties cannot occur. Then we obtain detailed results on the sign of potentials at infinity which, apart from asymptotic behaviour at infinity, is a second main feature responsible for the occurrence or absence of zero eigenvalues. Finally, we study the behaviour of potentials at the origin, and analyze a delicate interplay between the pinning effect resulting from a well at zero combined with decay and sign at infinity, as a main mechanism in the formation of zero-energy bound states. Among the many possible examples of non-local operators, we single out the fractional Laplacian and the massive relativistic operator, and we will derive and make extensive use of an additive relationship between the two. In the paper we propose a unified framework and develop a purely analytic approach.

In this paper we study some properties of the generalized Fokker-Planck equation induced by the time-changed fractional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. First of all, we exploit some sufficient conditions to show that a mild solution of such equation is actually a classical solution. Then we discuss an isolation result for mild solutions. Finally, we prove the weak maximum principle for strong solutions of the aforementioned equation and then a uniqueness result.

Abstract:
Recently there has been interest in pairs of Banach spaces $(E_0,E)$ in an $o-O$ relation and with $E_0^{**}=E$. It is known that this can be done for Lipschitz spaces on suitable metric spaces. In this paper we consider the case of a compact subset $K$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with the euclidean metric, which does not give an $o-O$ structure, but we use part of the theory concerning these pairs to find…

In this paper we consider the case of a compact subset $K$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with the euclidean metric, which does not give an $o-O$ structure, but we use part of the theory concerning these pairs to find an atomic decomposition of the predual of $Lip(K)$. In particular, since the space $\mathfrak{M}(K)$ of finite signed measures on $K$, when endowed with the Kantorovich-Rubinstein norm, has as dual space $Lip(K)$, we can give an atomic decomposition for this space.

Abstract:
For a compact metric space $(K, ρ)$, the predual of $Lip(K, ρ)$ can be identified with the normed space $M(K)$ of finite (signed) Borel measures on $K$ equipped with the Kantorovich-Rubinstein norm, this is due to Kantorovich [20]. Here we deduce atomic decomposition of $M(K)$ by mean of some results from [10]. It is also known, under suitable assumption, that there is a natural isometric isomorph…

In this work we also show that the pair $(lip(K, ρ), Lip(K, ρ))$ can be framed in the theory of o-O type structures introduced by K. M. Perfekt.

Moreover, we give a stochastic representation of the solutions of such difference-differential equations by means of a stable time-changed immigration-death process and we use this stochastic representation to show boundedness and then uniqueness of these strong solutions. Finally, we study the limit distribution of the time-changed process.

Abstract:
We define a time-changed fractional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process by composing a fractional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process with the inverse of a subordinator. Properties of the moments of such process are investigated and the existence of the density is shown. We also provide a generalized Fokker-Planck equation for the density of the process.

We study the problem of approximating the solution of such equation through an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type process, by using direct methods of calculus of variations. We show that general power cost functionals satisfy the conditions for existence and uniqueness of the approximation. We provide some examples of general interest and we give bounds on the goodness of the corresponding approximations. Finally, we focus on a model of a neuron embedded in a simple network and we study the approximation of its activity, by exploiting the aforementioned results.

We first exploit the (fractional) Kolmogorov forward equation for such process, then we use such equation to obtain an interpretation of this process in the queuing theory context. Then we also exploit the transient state probabilities and some features of this fractional queue model, such as the mean queue length, the distribution of the busy periods and some conditional distributions of the waiting times. Finally, we provide some algorithms to simulate their sample paths.

In this paper we characterize the distribution of the first exit time from an arbitrary open set for a class of semi-Markov processes obtained as time-changed Markov processes. We estimate the asymptotic behaviour of the survival function (for large $t$) and of the distribution function (for small $t$) and we provide some conditions for absolute continuity. We have been inspired by a problem of neurophyshiology and our results are particularly usefull in this field, precisely for the so-called Leacky Integrate-and-Fire (LIF) models: the use of semi-Markov processes in these models appear to be realistic under several aspects, e.g., it makes the intertimes between spikes a r.v. with infinite expectation, which is a desiderable property. Hence, after the theoretical part, we provide a LIF model based on semi-Markov processes.
