Euclidean Algorithm for a Gravitational Lens in a Polynomial Equation
Abstract: The Euclidean algorithm in algebra is applied to a class of gravitational lenses for which the lens equation consists of any set of coupled polynomial equations in the image position. In general, this algorithm allows us to reduce an apparently coupled system to a single polynomial in one variable (say $x$ in Cartesian coordinates) without the other component (say $y$), which is expressed as a f… ▽ More

Comments on "Measuring the Gravity Speed by VLBI"
Abstract: Einstein gravity with extra dimensions or alternative gravity theories might suggest that the gravity propagation speed can be different from the light speed. Such a difference may play a vital role in the primordial universe. In recent, Kopeikin and Fomalont claimed the first measurement of the gravity speed by VLBI. However, the measurement has no relevance with the speed of gravity as I had s… ▽ More

A Parametric Representation of Critical Curves and Caustics for a Binary Gravitational Lens
Abstract: We find a simple expression for critical curves of a binary gravitational lens. On the basis of this, we present a parametric representation of such curves. The caustics can also be expressed with the same parameterization. The present result is helpful for efficiently constructing many templates of light curves due to binary systems, particularly extrasolar planets, which cause spikes in the li… ▽ More

Separability of Rotational Effects on a Gravitational Lens
Abstract: We derive the deflection angle up to $O(m^2a)$ due to a Kerr gravitational lens with mass $m$ and specific angular momentum $a$. It is known that at the linear order in $m$ and $a$ the Kerr lens is observationally equivalent to the Schwarzschild one because of the invariance under the global translation of the center of the lens mass. We show, however, nonlinear couplings break the degeneracy so… ▽ More

Algebraic Properties of the Real Quintic Equation for a Binary Gravitational Lens
Abstract: It has been recently shown that the lens equation for a binary gravitational lens, which is apparently a coupled system, can be reduced to a real fifth-order (quintic) algebraic equation. Some algebraic properties of the real quintic equation are revealed. We find that the number of images on each side of the separation axis is independent of the mass ratio and separation unless the source cross… ▽ More

Images for an Isothermal Ellipsoidal Gravitational Lens from a Single Real Algebraic Equation
Abstract: We present explicit expressions for the lens equation for a cored isothermal ellipsoidal gravitational lens as a single real sixth-order algebraic equation in two approaches; 2-dimensional Cartesian coordinates and 3-dimensional polar ones. We find a condition for physical solutions which correspond to at most five images. For a singular isothermal ellipsoid, the sixth-order equation is reduced… ▽ More

Images for a Binary Gravitational Lens from a Single Real Algebraic Equation
Abstract: It is shown that the lens equation for a binary gravitational lens being a set of two coupled real fifth-order algebraic equations (equivalent to a single complex equation of the same order) can be reduced to a single real fifth-order algebraic equation, which provides a much simpler way to study lensing by binary objects.

The Light-cone Effect on the Shapiro Time Delay
Abstract: We investigate the light-cone effect on the Shapiro time delay. The extra time delay caused by Jupiter on the 8th of September 2002 can be measured by advanced VLBI (very long baseline interferometry). Our expression for the delay is in complete agreement with that of Kopeikin (2001), in which he argued that the excess time delay was due to the propagation of gravity. Perturbative approach to the astrometric microlensing due to an extrasolar planet
Abstract: We have developed a perturbative approach to microlensing due to an extrasolar planetary lens. In particular, we have found analytic formulae for triple images. We have used the formulae to investigate the astrometric microlensing due to the extrasolar planetary lens, in expectation of dramatic improvements in the precision of the future astrometric measurements. For a weak lensing case, we have… ▽ More

Equation of motion for relativistic compact binaries with the strong field point particle limit : the second and half post-Newtonian order
Abstract: We study the equation of motion appropriate to an inspiralling binary star system whose constituent stars have strong internal gravity. We use the post-Newtonian approximation with the strong field point particle limit by which we can introduce into general relativity a notion of a point-like particle with strong internal gravity without using Dirac delta distribution. Besides this limit, to dea… ▽ More

Do relativistic corrections affect microlensing amplification?
Abstract: Studies of gravitational microlensing are usually based on the lens equation, which is valid only to first order in the gravitational constant $G$. However, the amplification factor of microlensing is a second-order quantity with respect to $G$. Despite this fact, conventional studies are still based on the lowest-order lens equation. Then the question naturally arises: Why are these conventiona… ▽ More

Lagrangian description of fluid flow with pressure in relativistic cosmology
Abstract: The Lagrangian description of fluid flow in relativistic cosmology is extended to the case of flow accelerated by pressure. In the description, the entropy and the vorticity are obtained exactly for the barotropic equation of state. In order to determine the metric, the Einstein equation is solved perturbatively, when metric fluctuations are small but entropy inhomogeneities are large. Thus, the… ▽ More

Can we see a rotating gravitational lens?
Abstract: It is known that the rotation of a gravitational lens affects properties of images. We consider an inverse problem: If the lens is dark, can we infer its rotation from the observed images? We find that, up to the first order in the gravitational constant G, a rotating lens is not distinguishable from a non-rotating one. The quadrupole contribution to the deflection angle is also calculated for a… ▽ More

Equation of motion for relativistic compact binaries with the strong field point particle limit : Formulation, the first post-Newtonian and multipole terms
Abstract: We derive the equation of motion for the relativistic compact binaries in the post-Newtonian approximation taking explicitly their strong internal gravity into account. For this purpose we adopt the method of the point particle limit where the equation of motion is expressed in terms of the surface integrals. We examine carefully the behavior of the surface integrals in the derivation. As a resu… ▽ More

Constructing a Mass-Current Radiation-Reaction Force For Numerical Simulations
Abstract: We present a new set of 3.5 Post-Newtonian equations in which Newtonian hydrodynamics is coupled to the nonconservative effects of gravitational radiation emission. Our formalism differs in two significant ways from a similar 3.5 Post-Newtonian approach proposed by Blanchet (1993, 1997). Firstly we concentrate only on the radiation-reaction effects produced by a time-varying mass-current quadrup… ▽ More

Distances in Inhomogeneous Cosmological Models
Abstract: Distances play important roles in cosmological observations, especially in gravitational lens systems, but there is a problem in determining distances because they are defined in terms of light propagation, which is influenced gravitationally by the inhomogeneities in the universe. Lagrangian description of the fluid flow with vorticity in the relativistic cosmology

Based on this, the coupling between the density and vorticity is clarified in a non-perturbativ… ▽ More
