  1. Gluon fragmentation into quarkonium at next-to-leading order using FKS subtraction

    Authors: Pierre Artoisenet, Eric Braaten

Abstract: We present the calculation at next-to-leading order (NLO) in alpha_s of the fragmentation function of a gluon into heavy quarkonium in the color-octet spin-singlet S-wave channel. To calculate the real NLO corrections, we adapt a subtraction scheme introduced by Frixione, Kunszt, and Signer. Ultraviolet and infrared divergences in the real NLO corrections are calculated analytically by evaluating… ▽ More

  2. Gluon fragmentation into quarkonium at next-to-leading order

    Authors: Pierre Artoisenet, Eric Braaten

Abstract: We present the first calculation at next-to-leading order (NLO) in $α_s$ of a fragmentation function into quarkonium whose form at leading order is a nontrivial function of $z$, namely the fragmentation function for a gluon into a spin-singlet S-wave state at leading order in the relative velocity. To calculate the real NLO corrections, we introduce a new subtraction scheme that allows the phase-s… ▽ More

Abstract: This Report summarizes the results of the activities in 2012 and the first half of 2013 of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group. The main goal of the working group was to present the state of the art of Higgs Physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. This report follows the first working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Incl… ▽ More

Abstract: We introduce a framework, based on an effective field theory approach, that allows one to perform characterisation studies of the boson recently discovered at the LHC, for all the relevant channels and in a consistent, systematic and accurate way. The production and decay of such a boson with various spin and parity assignments can be simulated by means of multi-parton, tree-level matrix elements… ▽ More

  5. Unravelling $t\bar{t}h$ via the matrix element method

Authors: Pierre Artoisenet, Priscila de Aquino, Fabio Maltoni, Olivier Mattelaer

Abstract: Associated production of the Higgs boson with a top-antitop pair is a key channel to gather further information on the nature of the newly discovered boson at the LHC. Experimentally, however, its observation is very challenging due to the combination of small rates, difficult multi-jet final states and overwhelming backgrounds. In the Standard Model the largest number of events is expected when h… ▽ More

Authors: Pierre Artoisenet, Rikkert Frederix, Olivier Mattelaer, Robbert Rietkerk

Abstract: We present a general method that allows one to decay narrow resonances in Les Houches Monte Carlo events in an efficient and accurate way. The procedure preserves both spin correlation and finite width effects to a very good accuracy, and is therefore particularly suited for the decay of resonances in production events generated at next-to-leading-order accuracy. Abstract: A golden age for heavy quarkonium physics dawned a decade ago, initiated by the confluence of exciting advances in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and an explosion of related experimental activity. The early years of this period were chronicled in the Quarkonium Working Group (QWG) CERN Yellow Report (YR) in 2004, which presented a comprehensive review of the status of the field at that time and prov… ▽ More

  9. Estimating the Production Rate of Loosely-bound Hadronic Molecules using Event Generators

    Authors: Pierre Artoisenet, Eric Braaten

Abstract: We examine the use of hadronic event generators, such as Pythia or Herwig, to estimate the production rate of loosely-bound hadronic molecules, such as the deuteron and the X(3872). In the case of the deuteron, we point out that there are large uncertainties in the normalization of the predictions using event generators, because baryon pair distributions are not among the inputs used to tune the e… ▽ More

  10. Using Line Shapes to Discriminate between Binding Mechanisms for the X(3872)

Authors: Pierre Artoisenet, Eric Braaten, Daekyoung Kang

Abstract: We construct line shapes for the X(3872) that generalize the Flatte and zero-range line shapes that have been considered previously. These line shapes are associated with scattering amplitudes that are exactly unitary for real values of the interaction parameters and can be derived from a renormalizable quantum field theory. The new line shapes can be used to discriminate between the alternative b… ▽ More

    Authors: Pierre Artoisenet, Eric Braaten

Abstract: We predict the differential cross sections for production of the X(3872) at the Tevatron and the Large Hadron Collider from both prompt QCD mechanisms and from decays of b hadrons. The prompt cross section is calculated using the NRQCD factorization formula. Simplifying assumptions are used to reduce the nonperturbative parameters to a single NRQCD matrix element that is determined from an estim… ▽ More

  12. Charm-pair Rescattering Mechanism for Charmonium Production in High-energy Collisions

    Authors: Pierre Artoisenet, Eric Braaten

Abstract: A new mechanism for heavy quarkonium production in high-energy collisions called the "s-channel cut" was proposed in 2005 by Lansberg, Cudell, and Kalinovsky. We identify this mechanism physically as the production of a heavy quark and anti-quark that are on-shell followed by their rescattering to produce heavy quarkonium. We point out that in the NRQCD factorization formalism this rescattering… ▽ More

  13. Parton Model Calculation of Inclusive Charm Production by a Low-energy Antiproton Beam

    Authors: E. Braaten, P. Artoisenet

Abstract: The cross section for inclusive charm production by a low-energy antiproton beam is calculated using the parton model and next-to-leading order perturbative QCD. For an antiproton beam with a momentum of 15 GeV, the charm cross section at next-to-leading order in the QCD coupling constant changes by more than an order of magnitude as the charm quark mass is varied from 1.3 to 1.7 GeV. Abstract: We consider the J/psi photo-production data collected at HERA in the light of next-to-leading order predictions for the color-singlet yield and polarization. We find that, while the shapes of inclusive distributions in the transverse momentum and inelasticity are well reproduced, the experimental rates are larger than those given by the color-singlet contribution alone. Furthermore, the next-to-… ▽ More

    Authors: P. Artoisenet, J. Campbell, J. P. Lansberg, F. Maltoni, F. Tramontano

Abstract: We update the theoretical predictions for direct Y(nS) hadroproduction in the framework of NRQCD. We show that the next-to-leading order corrections in alpha_s to the color-singlet transition significantly raise the differential cross section at high pT and substantially affect the polarization of the Upsilon. J/psi production in association with a charm-quark pair at the Tevatron

    Authors: P. Artoisenet

Abstract: I study the direct hadroproduction of Jψassociated with a charm-quark pair at leading order in alpha_S and v in NRQCD. This process provides an interesting signature that could be studied at the Tevatron. I consider both colour-singlet and colour-octet transitions. I compare our results to the fragmentation approximation and discuss the associated experimental signatures.

Abstract: We extend the simple scenario for $Ψ'$ decays suggested a few years ago. The $c\bar c$ pair in the $Ψ'$ does not annihilate directly into three gluons but rather survives before annihilating. An interesting prediction is that a large fraction of all $Ψ'$ decays could originate from the $Ψ' \to η_{c} (3π)$ channel which we urge experimentalists to identify.
