In this paper, we propose a slot-based protocol that does not rely on global-time synchronization to achieve a self-healing mesh network. With the proposed protocol, each node synchronizes with its neighbors locally by adjusting its time to transmit based on the reception instant of a decoded beacon signal. Also, it determines its slots without any coordinator to avoid collisions. Finally, to communicate the messages over the mesh network, it identifies the forwarding nodes on the shortest path without knowing the entire communication graph. We show that the proposed protocol can effectively resolve collisions over time while enabling nodes to synchronize with each other in a distributed manner. We numerically analyze the performance of the proposed protocol for different configurations under a realistic channel model considering asymmetrical links. We also implement the proposed method in practice with \ac{LoRa} devices. We demonstrate that the nodes adapt themselves to changes in the network and deliver a message from a sensing node to a reference node via multi-hop routing.

Rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) is a multiple access scheme to mitigate the effects of the multi-user interference (MUI) in multi-antenna systems. In this study, we leverage the interference management capabilities of RSMA to tackle the issue of inter-carrier interference (ICI) in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) waveform. We formulate a sum-rate maximization problem to find the optimal subcarrier and power allocation for downlink transmission in a two-user system using RSMA and OFDM. A weighted minimum mean-square error (WMMSE)-based algorithm is proposed to obtain a solution for the formulated non-convex problem. We show that the marriage of rate-splitting (RS) with OFDM provides complementary strengths to cope with peculiar characteristic of wireless medium and its performance-limiting challenges including inter-symbol interference (ISI), MUI, ICI, and inter-numerology interference (INI). The sum-rate performance of the proposed OFDM-RSMA scheme is numerically compared with that of conventional orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) and OFDM-non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). It is shown that the proposed OFDM-RSMA outperforms OFDM-NOMA and OFDMA in diverse propagation channel conditions owing to its flexible structure and robust interference management capabilities.

In this paper, the performance of OTSM is explored by considering the joint effects of multiple hardware impairments (HWIs) such as in-phase and quadrature imbalance (IQI), direct current offset (DCO), phase noise, power amplifier non-linearity, carrier frequency offset, and synchronization timing offset for the first time in the area. First, the discrete-time baseband signal model is obtained in vector form under all mentioned HWIs. Second, the system input-output relations are derived in time, delay-time, and delay-sequency (DS) domains in which the parameters of all mentioned HWIs are incorporated. Third, analytical expressions are derived for the pairwise and average bit error probability under imperfect channel state information (CSI) as a function of the parameters of all mentioned HWIs. Analytical results demonstrate that under all mentioned HWIs, noise stays additive white Gaussian, effective channel matrix is sparse, DCO appears as a DC signal at the receiver interfering with only the zero sequency, and IQI redounds to self-conjugated sequency interference in the DS domain. Simulation results reveal the fact that by considering the joint effects of all mentioned HWIs and imperfect CSI not only OTSM outperforms OFDM by 29% in terms of energy of bit per noise but it performs same as OTFS in high mobility DSCs.

The march towards 6G is accelerating and future wireless network architectures require enhanced performance along with significant coverage especially, to combat impairments on account of the wireless channel. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technology is a promising solution, that has recently been considered as a research topic in standards, to help manipulate the channel in favor of users needs. Generally, in experimental RIS systems, the RIS is either connected to the transmitter (Tx) or receiver (Rx) through a physical backhaul link and it is controlled by the network and requires significant computation at the RIS for codebook (CB) designs. In this paper, we propose a practical user-controlled RIS system that is isolated from the network to enhance communication performance and provide coverage to the user based on its location and preference. Furthermore, a low-complexity algorithm is proposed to aid in CB selection for the user, which is performed through the wireless cloud to enable a passive and energy efficient RIS. Extensive experimental test-bed measurements demonstrate the enhanced performance of the proposed system while both results match and validate each other.

Perfect synchronization in LoRa communications between Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites and ground base stations is still challenging, despite the potential use of atomic clocks in LEO satellites, which offer high precision. Even by incorporating atomic clocks in LEO satellites, their inherent precision can be leveraged to enhance the overall synchronization process, perfect synchronization is infeasible due to a combination of factors such as signal propagation delay, Doppler effects, clock drift and atmospheric effects. These challenges require the development of advanced synchronization techniques and algorithms to mitigate their effects and ensure reliable communication from / to LEO satellites. However, maintaining acceptable levels of synchronization rather than striving for perfection, quasisynchronous (QS) communication can be adopted which maintains communication reliability, improves resource utilization, reduces power consumption, and ensures scalability as more devices join the communication. Overall, QS communication offers a practical, adaptive, and robust solution that enables LEO satellite communications to support the growing demands of IoT applications and global connectivity. In our investigation, we explore different chip waveforms such as rectangular and raised cosine. Furthermore, for the first time, we study the Symbol Error Rate (SER) performance of QS LoRa communication, for different spreading factors (SF), over Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channels.

An experimental investigation was conducted to explore spectroscopic and structural characterization of semiconducting yttrium oxide thin film deposited at 623 K (+/- 5K) utilizing reactive pulsed direct current magnetron sputtering. Based on the results obtained from both x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscope measurements, yttrium monoxide is very likely formed in the transition region between β-Y2O3 and α-Y2O3, and accompanied by the crystalline Y2O3. Resulting from either the low energy separation between 4d and 5s orbitals and/or different spin states of the corresponding orbitals' sublevels, the stability of monoxide is most presumably self-limited by the size of the crystal in thermodynamic terms. This behavior develops a distortion in the structure of the crystal compared to the metal oxide cubic structure and it also effectuates the arrangement in nanocrystalline/amorphous phase. In addition to this, spectroscopic ellipsometry denotes that the semiconducting yttrium oxide has the dominant, mostly amorphous, formation character over crystalline Y2O3. Our purpose, by means of the current findings, is to advance the understanding of formation kinetics/conditions of yttrium with an unusual valency (2+).

This paper proposes a novel time-frequency warped waveform for short symbols, massive machine-type communication (mMTC), and internet of things (IoT) applications. The waveform is composed of asymmetric raised cosine (RC) pulses to increase the signal containment in time and frequency domains. The waveform has low power tails in the time domain, hence better performance in the presence of delay spread and time offsets. The time-axis war** unitary transform is applied to control the waveform occupancy in time-frequency space and to compensate for the usage of high roll-off factor pulses at the symbol edges. The paper explains a step-by-step analysis for determining the roll-off factors profile and the war** functions. Gains are presented over the conventional Zero-tail Discrete Fourier Transform-spread-Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (ZT-DFT-s-OFDM), and Cyclic prefix (CP) DFT-s-OFDM schemes in the simulations section.

Non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) are a critical enabler of the persistent connectivity vision of sixth-generation networks, as they can service areas where terrestrial infrastructure falls short. However, the integration of these networks with the terrestrial network is laden with obstacles. The dynamic nature of NTN communication scenarios and numerous variables render conventional model-based solutions computationally costly and impracticable for resource allocation, parameter optimization, and other problems. Machine learning (ML)-based solutions, thus, can perform a pivotal role due to their inherent ability to uncover the hidden patterns in time-varying, multi-dimensional data with superior performance and less complexity. Centralized ML (CML) and decentralized ML (DML), named so based on the distribution of the data and computational load, are two classes of ML that are being studied as solutions for the various complications of terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks (TNTN) integration. Both have their benefits and drawbacks under different circumstances, and it is integral to choose the appropriate ML approach for each TNTN integration issue. To this end, this paper goes over the TNTN integration architectures as given in the 3rd generation partnership project standard releases, proposing possible scenarios. Then, the capabilities and challenges of CML and DML are explored from the vantage point of these scenarios.

When using ultra-wideband (UWB) signaling on massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) systems, the electromagnetic wave at each array element incurs an extra propagation delay comparable to (or larger than) the symbol duration, producing a shift in beam direction known as beam squint. The beam squinting problem degrades the array gain and reduces the system capacity. This letter proposes a novel transceiver design based on lens antenna subarray (LAS) and analog subband filters to compensate for the beam squinting effect. In particular, the proposed design aims to divide the UWB signal into narrowband beams and control them with a simplified exhaustive search-based precoding that is proposed to align the beam angle to the target direction. The design is analyzed in terms of beam gain, complexity, power consumption, and capacity, demonstrating significant performance enhancement with respect to the conventional system with uncompensated beam squinting problem.

However, these components can degrade over time and need to be identified so that either they can be replaced or their effects can be compensated. The identification of these components can be done through observation and analysis of constellation diagrams. However, in the presence of multiple distortions, it is very challenging to isolate and identify the RF components responsible for the degradation. The synthesis of the photochromic YHO films is based on the oxidation of deposited yttrium hydride in ambient conditions. The actual state of the films during the deposition process, which is influenced by the deposition pressure and the oxidation caused by the residual gases, is not completely known. We report on the YHxOy thin films deposited by reactive pulsed-DC magnetron sputtering. Since the visible light transmittance is closely related to the phase and chemical composition of the films, in-situ transmittance measurements during and after deposition are performed. Ex-situ spectroscopic ellipsometry is used to determine the optical constants of YHxOy throughout the film thickness. In order to obtain metallic YH2-x films, the densest possible structure with a high deposition rate is required, otherwise the films could already be partially transparent during the deposition. The transmittance is higher if deposition pressure is increased. This is because of the oxidation promoted by more porous growth of the microstructure that is observed at the surface and cross-section images of the films. The films exhibit a refractive index gradient perpendicular to the substrate surface, which is related to the porosity and variation of the chemical composition.

Security has emerged as one of the critical requirements in future wireless networks. Unlike traditional cryptography-based security, physical layer security (PLS) exploits various features of the random wireless channel to secure not only the information being communicated but the whole communication process from any type of attack. Future wireless networks are envisioned to feature new technologies such as re-configurable intelligent surfaces, massive multiple input multiple output, and sensing, to accommodate the emerging use-cases. Both, the new technologies and the new use-cases have been found to enrich the channel characteristics by unveiling some new channel features which can be readily exploited to facilitate PLS. This article surveys these new channel features to reveal their potential for PLS implementation. In the course of the article, the assessments of important qualities while selecting a certain channel feature for the PLS application are discussed. The importance of the channel control concept and sensing technologies that facilitate the accessibility of certain channel features are highlighted from the PLS perspective. Recently, orthogonal time-frequency-space (OTFS) modulation is used as a promising candidate waveform for high mobility communication scenarios. In practical transmission, OTFS with rectangular pulse sha** is implemented using different prefix/suffix configurations including reduced-cyclic prefix (RCP), full-CP (FCP), full-zero suffix (FZS), and reduced-zero padded (RZP). However, for each prefix/suffix type, different effective channel are seen at the receiver side resulting in dissimilar performance of the various OTFS configurations given a specific communication scenario. To fulfill this gap, in this paper, we study and model the effective channel in OTFS systems using various prefix/suffix configurations. Then, from the input-output relation analysis of the received signal, we show that the OTFS has a simple sparse structure for all prefix/suffix types, where the only difference is the phase term introduced when extending quasi-periodically in the delay-Doppler grid. We provide a comprehensive comparison between all OTFS types in terms of channel estimation/equalization complexity, symbol detection performance, power and spectral efficiencies, which helps in deciding the optimal prefix/suffix configuration for a specific scenario. Finally, we propose a novel OTFS structure namely reduced-FCP (RFCP) where the information of the CP block is decodable.

In this work, we mathematically model how the INI is generated and how it can be removed completely for multi-numerology systems on the transmitter side.

However, NTNs, especially non-geostationary satellites bring about challenges such as increased handovers (HOs) due to the moving coverage area of the satellite on the ground. Accordingly, in this work, we compare the conventional measurement-based HO triggering mechanism with other alternatives such as distance, elevation angle, and timer-based methods in terms of the numbers of HOs, **-pong HOs, and radio link failures. The system-level simulations, carried out in accordance with the 3GPP model, show that the measurement-based approach can outperform the other alternatives provided that appropriate values of hysteresis/offset margins and time-to-trigger parameters are used. Moreover, future directions regarding this work are also provided at the end.

Sixth-generation (6G) of mobile communication aims to connect this world digitally through green communication networks that provide secure, ubiquitous, and unlimited connectivity in an attempt to improve the overall quality of life. The driving force behind the development of these networks is the rapid evolution of Internet-of-Things (IoT), which has stimulated the proliferation of wireless applications in health, education, agriculture, utilities, etc. However, these applications are accompanied by the deployment of a massive number of IoT devices that require a significant radio spectrum for wireless connectivity. IoT devices usually have low data rate requirements and limited power provision but desirably a long life.Recently, the development of passive radio systems has opened new paradigms of spectrum sharing and coexistence. These systems utilize the radio resources and infrastructure of the active radio systems to perform their functionalities. By enabling the dependent coexistence, a new technology named symbiotic radio (SRad) enables the symbiotic relationships between the different radio systems ranging from mutual benefits or competition in terms of sharing the resources, in particular for IoT devices. This survey first provides the motivation for dependent coexistence and background of spectrum sharing through coexistence along with existing literature. Then, it describes the active and passive radio systems definition and a brief overview. Afterward, the history of symbiosis and the role of SRad technology in spectrum sharing and coexistence are defined while focusing on symbiotic communication. Lastly, we discuss research challenges, future directions, and applications scenarios.

In this work, novel physical layer security (PLS) schemes are proposed for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) to secure both data and pilots. The majority of previous studies focus on only securing the data without considering the security of the pilots used for channel estimation. However, the leakage of channel state information (CSI) from a legitimate node to an eavesdropper allows the latter to acquire knowledge about the channel of the legitimate nodes. To this end, we propose adaptive and flexible PLS algorithms which can 1) secure data, 2) secure pilots, and 3) jointly secure both data and pilots. Particularly, minimum-phase all-pass channel decomposition is exploited, where the proposed algorithms use the all-pass component to provide security without harming the performance of the legitimate user. In the analysis for data security, we evaluated the secrecy under correlated and uncorrelated eavesdrop** channels via closed-form bit error rate (BER) formulas. For pilot security, we analyzed the normalized mean squared error (NMSE) performance of the estimated channel. The simulation results along with theoretical analysis demonstrate that the proposed algorithms can effectively enhance the communication secrecy of the overall system.

In this paper, we propose a secure orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission scheme, where the destination node transmits a jamming signal over the cyclic prefix (CP) duration of the received signal. Simulation results verify that as long as at least a part of the jamming signal falls to the actual data portion of the eavesdrop** relay, it spreads through all the data symbols due to the fast Fourier transformation (FFT) operation, resulting in degraded interception at the eavesdropper.

Physical layer key generation from the wireless channel is an emerging area of interest to provide confidentiality and authentication. One of the main challenges in this domain is to increase the length of the secret key while maintaining its randomness and uniformity. In this work, new dimensions for wireless channel-based key generation are proposed for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The novel perspective of the proposed work lies in the generation of key bits not only from the magnitudes of OFDM subchannels as it has conventionally been done but also from the number and positions of those subchannels whose channel gains are above the mean of the respective subblock. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithms is evaluated in terms of key generation rate and key mismatch rate. Additionally, a statistical test suite offered by the National Institute of Standards and Technology is used to evaluate the randomness of the generated key bits. It is shown in the simulation results that the involvement of the proposed dimensions can double the key generation rate compared to conventional algorithms.

Wireless networks have become imperative in all areas of human life. As such, one of the most critical concerns in next-generation networks is ensuring the security and privacy of user data/communication. Cryptography has been conventionally used to tackle this, but it may not be scalable (in terms of key exchange and management) with the increasingly heterogeneous network deployments. Physical layer security (PLS) provides a promising alternative, but struggles when an attacker boasts a better wireless channel as compared to the legitimate user. This work leverages the coordinated multipoint concept and its distributed transmission points, in conjunction with channel shortening, to address this problem. Results show significant degradation of the bit-error-rate experienced at the eavesdropper as compared to state-of-the-art channel shortening-based PLS methods.

Radio-frequency (RF) front-end forms a critical part of any radio system, defining its cost as well as communication performance. However, these components frequently exhibit non-ideal behavior, referred to as impairments, due to the imperfections in the manufacturing/design process. Most of the designers rely on simplified closed-form models to estimate these impairments. On the other hand, these models do not holistically or accurately capture the effects of real-world RF front-end components. Recently, machine learning-based algorithms have been proposed to estimate these impairments. However, these algorithms are not capable of estimating multiple RF impairments jointly, which leads to limited estimation accuracy. In this paper, the joint estimation of multiple RF impairments by exploiting the relationship between them is proposed. To do this, a deep multi-task learning-based algorithm is designed. Extensive simulation results reveal that the performance of the proposed joint RF impairments estimation algorithm is superior to the conventional individual estimations in terms of mean-square error. Moreover, the proposed algorithm removes the need of training multiple models for estimating the different impairments.

This letter presents a novel authentication approach using a combination of signal and antenna activation sequences, and most importantly, perturbed antenna array geometries. Possible degrees of freedom in perturbing antenna array geometries affected physical properties and their detection are presented. Channel estimation for the plurality of validly authorized arrays is discussed. Accuracy is investigated as a function of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and number of authorized arrays. It is observed that the proposed authentication scheme can provide 1% false authentication rate at 10 dB SNR, while it is achieving less than 1% missed authentication rates.

The intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is emphasized as a controlled scattering cluster. To this end, scatterers and traveling paths of multipath components are classified to build a new channel model. Unlike the conventional modeling, where the channels between system units are modeled independently, the new model considers the channel as a whole and decomposes it based on the traveling paths. The model shows clearly how IRS, in the beam-space context, converts the channel from a problem into a design element. After investigating IRS as a scattering cluster, based on a proposed segmentation scheme, the beamforming problem is considered with a focus on first-order reflections. Passive beamforming at IRS is shown to have two tiers; at the scatterer and antenna levels. A segment-activation scheme is proposed to maximize the received signal power, where the number of transmitting antenna elements to be used is given as a function of IRS positioning and beamforming at the receiver. The results show that while using more transmitting antenna elements to get narrower beams is possible, using fewer elements can give better performance, especially for larger IRS at close distances. The developed model also proves useful in addressing emerging issues in massive MIMO communication, namely, stationarity and spherical wavefronts.

In this work, we aim to investigate efficient power allocation for the secondary users (SUs) in underlay CR-NOMA networks using a game-theoretic approach. We present a novel power allocation to CR-NOMA network from a game-theoretic perspective. First, we specify the utility function of the primary users (PUs) and SUs, and formulate the game as a non-cooperative game. Then, the existence and uniqueness of the Nash equilibrium (NE) are investigated. Finally, the sum utilities of SUs is maximized by optimal power allocation at the NE point. Simulation results provided that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional method, providing up to 37.5\% increase in sum utilities of the SUs.

Applying compressive sensing (CS) allows for sub-Nyquist sampling in several application areas in 5G and beyond. This reduces the associated training, feedback, and computation overheads in many applications. However, the applicability of CS relies on the validity of a signal sparsity assumption and knowing the exact sparsity level. It is customary to assume a foreknown sparsity level. Still, this assumption is not valid in practice, especially when applying learned dictionaries as sparsifying transforms. The problem is more strongly pronounced with multidimensional sparsity. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for estimating the composite sparsity lying in multiple domains defined by learned dictionaries. The proposed algorithm estimates the sparsity level over a dictionary by inferring it from its counterpart with respect to a compact discrete Fourier basis. This inference is achieved by a machine learning prediction. This setting learns the intrinsic relationship between the columns of a dictionary and those of such a fixed basis. The proposed algorithm is applied to estimating sparsity levels in wireless channels, and in cognitive radio spectra. Extensive simulations validate a high quality of sparsity estimation leading to performances very close to the impractical case of assuming known sparsity.

In millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems, beamforming is needed to overcome harsh channel environments. As a promising beamforming solution, lens antenna array (LAA) implementation can provide a cost-effective solution without notable performance degradation compared to its counterpart. However, an appropriate beam selection is a challenge since it requires efficient channel estimation via an extensive beam training process for perfect beam alignment. In this paper, we propose a high mobility beam and channel tracking algorithm based on the unscented Kalman filter (UKF) to address this challenge, where the channel changes can be monitored over a certain time. The proposed algorithm tracks the channel changes after establishing a connection with an appropriate beam. The algorithm is first introduced in a multi-user beamspace multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with LAA where a single beam is tracked at the user side at downlink transmission. Then, it is employed for multi-beam joint-tracking at the base station side in the uplink transmission. The analysis indicates that under different channel variation conditions, the proposed algorithm outmatches the popular extended Kalman filter (EKF) in both single-beam and multi-beam tracking systems. While it is common to individually track the beams in a multi-beam system scenario, the proposed joint tracking approach can provide around 62% performance enhancement compared to individual beam tracking using the conventional EKF method.

Earlier works used estimated channel information with deep learning algorithms to design RIS reflection matrices. Although these works can reduce the beam training overhead, still they overlook existing correlations in the previously sampled channels. In this paper, different from existing works, we propose to exploit the correlation in the previously sampled channels to estimate RIS interaction more reliably. This study examines the flexible utilization of existing IM techniques in a comprehensive manner to satisfy the challenging and diverse requirements of 5G and beyond services. After spatial modulation (SM), which transmits information bits through antenna indices, application of IM to orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) subcarriers has opened the door for the extension of IM into different dimensions, such as radio frequency (RF) mirrors, time slots, codes, and dispersion matrices. Recent studies have introduced the concept of multidimensional IM by various combinations of one-dimensional IM techniques to provide higher spectral efficiency (SE) and better bit error rate (BER) performance at the expense of higher transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) complexity. Despite the ongoing research on the design of new IM techniques and their implementation challenges, proper use of the available IM techniques to address different requirements of 5G and beyond networks is an open research area in the literature. For this reason, we first provide the dimensional-based categorization of available IM domains and review the existing IM types regarding this categorization. Then, we develop a framework that investigates the efficient utilization of these techniques and establishes a link between the IM schemes and 5G services, namely enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), massive machine-type communications (mMTC), and ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC). Additionally, this work defines key performance indicators (KPIs) to quantify the advantages and disadvantages of IM techniques in time, frequency, space, and code dimensions. Finally, future recommendations are given regarding the design of flexible IM-based communication systems for 5G and beyond wireless networks.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been widely discussed as new technology to improve wireless communication performance. Based on the unique design of RIS, its elements can reflect, refract, absorb, or focus the incoming waves toward any desired direction. These functionalities turned out to be a major solution to overcome millimeter-wave (mmWave)'s high propagation conditions including path attenuation and blockage. However, channel estimation in RIS-aided communication is still a major concern due to the passive nature of RIS elements, and estimation overhead that arises with multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. As a consequence, user tracking has not been analyzed yet. This paper is the first work that addresses channel estimation, beamforming, and user tracking under practical mmWave RIS-MIMO systems. By providing the mathematical relation of RIS design with a MIMO system, a three-stage framework is presented. Starting with estimating the channel between a base station (BS) and RIS using hierarchical beam searching, followed by estimating the channel between RIS and user using an iterative resolution algorithm. Lastly, a popular tracking algorithm is employed to track channel parameters between the RIS and the user. System analysis demonstrates the robustness and the effectiveness of the proposed framework in real-time scenarios.

The coexistence of different wireless communication systems such as LTE and Wi-Fi by sharing the unlicensed band is well studied in the literature. In these studies, various methods are proposed to support the coexistence of systems, including listen-before-talk mechanism, joint user association and resource allocation. However, in this study, the coexistence of different waveform structures in the same resource elements are studied under the theory of non-orthogonal multiple access. This study introduces a paradigm-shift on NOMA towards the application-centric waveform coexistence. Throughout the paper, the coexistence of different waveforms is explained with two specific use cases, which are power-balanced NOMA and joint radar-sensing and communication with NOMA. In addition, some of the previous works in the literature regarding non-orthogonal waveform coexistence are reviewed. However, the concept is not limited to these use cases. With the rapid development of wireless technology, next-generation wireless systems are proposed to be flexible and hybrid, having different kinds of capabilities such as sensing, security, intelligence, control, and computing. Enabling technologies of 5G and beyond wireless communication networks, such as millimeter-wave communication, beamforming, and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna systems, are becoming increasingly dependent on accurate information of the physical environment for optimized communication performance. The acquisition of this information is a significant challenge, which can be eased by knowledge of the radio environment. Radio environment map** (REM) has long been considered an enabler of cognitive radios (CRs). However, the limitations of radios effectively confined the application of REM to spectrum sensing and interference map**. With the advent of more capable software-defined radios and advanced networks, the idea of a truly intelligent communication system empowered by enhanced REM can be realized. To this effect, we propose the generalized radio environment monitoring (G-REM) concept to include all aspects of the radio environment. Millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input-multiple-output (mMIMO) is reported as a key enabler in the fifth-generation communication and beyond. It is customary to use a lens antenna array to transform a mmWave mMIMO channel into a beamspace where the channel exhibits sparsity. This beamspace transformation is equivalent to performing a Fourier transformation of the channel. Still, a Fourier transformation is not necessarily the optimal one, due to many reasons. Accordingly, this paper proposes using a learned sparsifying dictionary as the transformation operator leading to another beamspace. Since the dictionary is obtained by training over actual channel measurements, this transformation is shown to yield two immediate advantages. First is enhancing channel sparsity, thereby leading to more efficient pilot reduction. Second is improving the channel representation quality, and thus reducing the underlying power leakage phenomenon. Consequently, this allows for both improved channel estimation and facilitated beam selection in mmWave mMIMO. Besides, a learned dictionary is also used as the precoding operator for the same reasons. Extensive simulations under various operating scenarios and environments validate the added benefits of using learned dictionaries in improving the channel estimation quality and the beam selectivity, thereby improving the spectral efficiency.

In this study, a novel transmission scheme is proposed to serve radar-sensing and communication objectives at the same time and allocated bandwidth. The proposed transmitted frame non-orthogonally superimposes two different waveforms, which are frequency modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) for radar-sensing and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) for communication. Also, the receiver scheme that performs channel estimation via radar-sensing functionality without degrading data rate of communication operation is introduced. As numerically evaluated, the proposed system achieves good sensing accuracy even if the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is low, and communication performance is only 0.6 dB less at the target bit-error rate (BER) of 1% compared to the assumption of perfect channel state information (CSI) without any pilot overhead over OFDM subcarriers.

Open-source code development has become widespread in recent years. As a result, open-source software platforms have also become popular, and millions of developers from diverse locations are able to contribute to the same projects. On these platforms, various knowledge about them is obtained from user activity. This information is used in the form of developer metrics to solve a variety of challenges. In this study, we proposed new developer metrics, including commenting and issue-related activity, that require less information. We concluded that commenting on any feature of a project can be equally as valuable as code contribution. In addition, besides the quantitative ones, metrics based on only the existence of the activity have been shown to offer also considerable results. We saw that issues were crucial in identifying user contributions. Even if a developer makes a contribution to only one issue on a project, the relation between the developer and the project is tight. The hit scores are relatively lower because of the sparsity problem of our dataset; even so, we believe that we have presented improvable and remarkable new developer metrics.

With the emergence of the internet of things (IoT) technology, wireless connectivity should be more ubiquitous than ever. In fact, the availability of wireless connection everywhere comes with security threats that, unfortunately, cannot be handled by conventional cryptographic solutions alone, especially in heterogeneous and decentralized future wireless networks. In general, physical layer security (PLS) helps in bridging this gap by taking advantage of the fading propagation channel. Moreover, the adoption of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) in wireless networks makes the PLS techniques more efficient by involving the channel into the design loop. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive literature review on the RIS-assisted PLS for future wireless communications. We start by introducing the basic concepts of RISs and their different applications in wireless communication networks and the most common PLS performance metrics. Then, we focus on the review and classification of RIS-assisted PLS applications, exhibiting multiple scenarios, system models, objectives, and methodologies. In fact, most of the works in this field formulate an optimization problem to maximize the secrecy rate (SR) or secrecy capacity (SC) at a legitimate user by jointly optimizing the beamformer at the transmitter and the RIS's coefficients, while the differences are in the adopted methodology to optimally/sub-optimally approach the solution. We finalize this survey by presenting some insightful recommendations and suggesting open problems for future research extensions.

5G New Radio (NR) introduces new flexibility that different numerologies can be selected to meet the requirements of a wide variety of services. For this new structure, blind numerology identification can increase system efficiency. Therefore, we propose a blind identification method for mixed numerologies. An autocorrelation method is applied in the time domain by correlating the cyclic prefix (CP) signal of the candidate numerology in the received composite signal for numerology type identification. Then, the location of each numerology in the frequency domain is identified by the variance difference in the power spectral density (PSD) of the subbands, on which different numerologies are occupied. The simulation results are obtained under additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and frequencyselective channels. The obtained results show that the proposed method has a robust identification accuracy and a satisfactory BER performance as compared to the non-blind identification approach in the conventional mixed-numerology system.

Cognitive radio is an intelligent and adaptive radio that improves the utilization of the spectrum by its opportunistic sharing. However, it is inherently vulnerable to primary user emulation and jamming attacks that degrade the spectrum utilization. In this paper, an algorithm for the detection of primary user emulation and jamming attacks in cognitive radio is proposed. The proposed algorithm is based on the sparse coding of the compressed received signal over a channel-dependent dictionary. More specifically, the convergence patterns in sparse coding according to such a dictionary are used to distinguish between a spectrum hole, a legitimate primary user, and an emulator or a jammer. The process of decision-making is carried out as a machine learning-based classification operation. Extensive numerical experiments show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in detecting the aforementioned attacks with high success rates. This is validated in terms of the confusion matrix quality metric. Besides, the proposed algorithm is shown to be superior to energy detection-based machine learning techniques in terms of receiver operating characteristics curves and the areas under these curves

In open-source software development environments; textual, numerical and relationship-based data generated are of interest to researchers. Various data sets are available for this data, which is frequently used in areas such as software engineering and natural language processing. However, since these data sets contain all the data in the environment, the problem arises in the terabytes of data processing. For this reason, almost all of the studies using GitHub data use filtered data according to certain criteria. In this context, using a different data set in each study makes a comparison of the accuracy of the studies quite difficult. In order to solve this problem, a common dataset was created and shared with the researchers, which would allow us to work on many software engineering problems.
