Toroidal dipole moments, which consist of enclosed circulating currents aligned along paths within a torus shape, can be experimentally achieved in metamaterials using various geometrical configurations. Here, we investigate the excitation of toroidal dipole moments in a core-shell nanosphere composed of dispersive materials within the framework of the Lorenz-Mie theory. By isolating the contributions related to volumetric oscillations of electric charges from those of transverse and radial current oscillations, we derive closed-form analytic expressions for the scattering coefficients associated with electric and magnetic toroidal dipole moments. These analytic expressions, obtained beyond the Rayleigh scattering regime and previously concealed within the Lorenz-Mie theory, agree with the Cartesian toroidal dipoles determined from the radial and transverse current oscillations. By exploring the resonances in these calculated coefficients, we demonstrate that the electric and magnetic toroidal dipole excitations can be manipulated and tuned for near- and far-field applications involving plasmonic core-shell nanoparticles and engineered metamaterials. We believe that our analytic results could shed light on some of the extraordinary effects obtained in Lorenz-Mie theory that depend on the interference of multipole coefficients, such as toroidal dipole-induced transparency, Fano resonances and superscattering of light.

Based on the expansion of mode functions in vector spherical harmonics, we derive closed analytical expressions for both the cooperative decay rate and the dipole-dipole interaction strength associated with two point dipoles close to a sphere. Considering a plasmonic nanoshell containing a linearly amplifying medium inside the core, the second-order correlation function for the two emitters shows that it is possible to tune the photon emission, selecting either photon bunching or antibunching as a function of the polarization and position of the sphere. This result opens vistas to applications involving tunable single-photon sources in engineered artificial media.

Most applications of memory effects in disordered optical media, such as the tilt-tilt and shift-shift spatial correlations, have focused on imaging through and inside biological tissues. Here we put forward a metamaterial platform not only to enhance but also to tune memory effects in random media. Specifically, we investigate the shift-shift and tilt-tilt spatial correlations in metamaterials composed of coated spheres and cylinders by means of the radiative transfer equation. Based on the single-scattering phase function, we calculate the translation correlations in anisotropically scattering media with spherical or cylindrical geometries and find a simple relation between them. We show that the Fokker-Planck model can be used with the small-angle approximation to obtain the shift-tilt memory effect with ballistic light contribution. By considering a two-dimensional scattering system, composed of thick dielectric cylinders coated with subwavelength layers of thermally tunable magneto-optical semiconductors, we suggest the possibility of tailoring and controlling the shift-shift and tilt-tilt memory effects in light scattering. In particular, we show that the generalized memory effect can be enhanced by increasing the temperature of the system, and it can be decreased by applying an external magnetic field. Altogether our findings unveil the potential applications that metamaterial systems may have to control externally memory effects in disordered media.

This proposal investigates the photon-statistics of light emitted by a statistical ensemble of cold atoms excited by the near-field of an optical nanofiber tip. Dipole-dipole interactions of atoms at such short distance from each other suppress the simultaneous emission of more than one photon and lead to antibunching of photons. We consider a mean atom number on the order of one and deal with a poissonian mixture of one and two atoms including dipole-dipole interactions and collective decay. Time tracks of the atomic states are simulated in quantum Monte Carlo simulations from which the $g^{(2)}$-photon autocorrelation function is derived. The general results can be applied to any statistical ensemble of emitters that are interacting by dipole-dipole interactions.

An exact expression is derived for the time-averaged electromagnetic energy within a magneto-dielectric coated sphere, which is irradiated by a plane and time-harmonic electromagnetic wave. Both the spherical shell and core are considered to be dispersive and lossy, with a realistic dispersion relation of an isotropic split-ring resonator metamaterial. We obtain analytical expressions for the stored electromagnetic energies inside the core and the shell separately and calculate their contribution to the total average energy density. The stored electromagnetic energy is calculated for two situations involving a metamaterial coated sphere: the dielectric shell and dispersive metamaterial core, and vice-versa. An explicit relation between the stored energy and the optical absorption efficiency is also obtained. We show that the stored electromagnetic energy is an observable sensitive to field interferences responsible for the Fano effect. This result, together with the fact that the Fano effect is more likely to occur in metamaterials with negative refraction, suggest that our findings may be explored in applications.

Based on the Lorenz-Mie theory, we derive analytical expressions of radiative and nonradiative transition rates for different orientations of a point dipole emitter in the vicinity of an infinitely long circular cylinder of arbitrary radius. Special attention is devoted to the spontaneous decay rate of a dipole emitter near a subwavelength-diameter nanowire coated with a graphene monolayer. We show that plasmonic Fano resonances associated with light scattering by graphene-coated nanowires appear in the Purcell factor as a function of transition wavelength. Furthermore, the Fano line shape of transition rates can be tailored and electrically tuned by varying the distance between emitter and cylinder and by modulating the graphene chemical potential, where the Fano asymmetry parameter is proportional to the square root of the chemical potential. This gate-voltage-tunable Fano resonance leads to a resonant enhancement and suppression of light emission in the far-infrared range of frequencies. This result could be explored in applications involving ultrahigh-contrast switching for spontaneous emission in specifically designed tunable plasmonic nanostructures.

Despite a long history, light scattering by particles with size comparable with the light wavelength still unveils surprising optical phenomena, and many of them are related to the Fano effect. Originally described in the context of atomic physics, the Fano resonance in light scattering arises from the interference between a narrow subradiant mode and a spectrally broad radiation line. Here, we present an overview of Fano resonances in coated spherical scatterers within the framework of the Lorenz-Mie theory. We briefly introduce the concept of conventional and unconventional Fano resonances in light scattering. These resonances are associated with the interference between electromagnetic modes excited in the particle with different or the same multipole moment, respectively. In addition, we investigate the modification of the spontaneous-emission rate of an optical emitter at the presence of a plasmonic nanoshell. This modification of decay rate due to electromagnetic environment is referred to as the Purcell effect. We analytically show that the Purcell factor related to a dipole emitter oriented orthogonal or tangential to the spherical surface can exhibit Fano or Lorentzian line shapes in the near field, respectively.

We investigate electromagnetic scattering of normally irradiated gyrotropic, magneto-optical core-shell cylinders using Lorenz-Mie theory. A general expression for time-averaged electromagnetic energy inside a coated gyroelectric and gyromagnetic scatterer is derived. Using realistic material parameters for a silica core and InSb shell, we calculate the stored electromagnetic energy and the scattering anisotropy. We show that the application of an external magnetic field along the cylinder axis induces a drastic decrease in electromagnetic absorption in a frequency range in the terahertz, where absorption is maximal in the absence of the magnetic field. We demonstrate not only that the scattering anisotropy can be externally tuned by applying a magnetic field, but also that it reaches negative values in the terahertz range even in the dipolar regime. We also show that this preferential backscattering response results in an anomalous regime of multiple light scattering from a collection of magneto-optical core-shell cylinders, in which the extinction mean free path is longer than the transport mean free path. By additionally calculating the energy-transport velocity and diffusion coefficient, we demonstrate an unprecedented degree of external control of multiple light scattering, which can be achieved by either applying an external magnetic field or varying the temperature.

We analytically study the time-averaged electromagnetic energy stored inside scatterers containing inclusions of arbitrary shapes. Assuming the low density of inclusions, we derive the expression for the energy-transport velocity through disordered media without relying on the radiative transfer equation. Moreover, this expression is independent of the shape of scatterers. In addition, we obtain a relation between the dwell and absorption times associated with inclusions by considering the relationship between internal energy and absorption cross-section. An approximation for the electromagnetic energy stored inside a disordered medium in terms of the transport mean free path and the packing fraction is also derived. This expression suggests that the enhanced electromagnetic energy within the host medium is achieved for inclusions exhibiting negative scattering asymmetry parameters. As a result, disordered media with enhanced backscattering is expected to exhibit large quality factors.

We analytically study the spontaneous emission of a single optical dipole emitter in the vicinity of a plasmonic nanoshell, based on the Lorenz-Mie theory. We show that the fluorescence enhancement due to the coupling between optical emitter and sphere can be tuned by the aspect ratio of the core-shell nanosphere and by the distance between the quantum emitter and its surface. In particular, we demonstrate that both the enhancement and quenching of the fluorescence intensity are associated with plasmonic Fano resonances induced by near- and far-field interactions. These Fano resonances have asymmetry parameters whose signs depend on the orientation of the dipole with respect to the spherical nanoshell. We also show that if the atomic dipole is oriented tangentially to the nanoshell, the interaction exhibits saddle points in the near-field energy flow. This results in a Lorentzian fluorescence enhancement response in the near field and a Fano line-shape in the far field. The signatures of this interaction may have interesting applications for sensing the presence and the orientation of optical emitters in close proximity to plasmonic nanoshells.

We investigate multiple Fano, comblike scattering resonances in single-layered, concentric core-shell nanoparticles composed of magnetic materials. Using the Lorenz-Mie theory, we derive, in the long-wavelength limit, an analytical condition for the occurrence of comblike resonances in the single scattering by coated spheres. This condition establishes that comblike scattering response uniquely depends on material parameters and thickness of the shell, provided that it is magnetic and thin compared to the scatterer radius. We also demonstrate that comblike scattering response shows up beyond the long-wavelength limit and it is robust against absorption. Since multiple Fano resonances are shown to depend explicitly on the magnetic permeability of the shell, we argue that both the position and profile of the comblike, morphology-dependent resonances could be externally tuned by exploiting the properties of engineered magnetic materials.

We investigate light scattering by coated spheres composed of a dispersive plasmonic core and a dielectric shell. By writing the absorption cross-section in terms of the internal electromagnetic fields, we demonstrate it is an observable sensitive to interferences that ultimately lead to the Fano effect. Specially, we show that unconventional Fano resonances, recently discovered for homogeneous spheres with large dielectric permittivities, can also occur for metallic spheres coated with single dielectric layers. These resonances arise from the interference between two electromagnetic modes with the same multipole moment inside the shell and not from interactions between various plasmon modes of different layers of the particle. In contrast to the case of homogeneous spheres, unconventional Fano resonances in coated spheres exist even in the Rayleigh limit. These resonances can induce an off-resonance field enhancement, which is approximately one order of magnitude larger than the one achieved with conventional Fano resonances. We find that unconventional and conventional Fano resonances can occur at the same input frequency provided the dispersive core has a negative refraction index. This leads to an optimal field enhancement inside the particle, a result that could be useful for potential applications in plasmonics.

Consider that an incident plane wave is scattered by a homogeneous and isotropic magnetic sphere of finite radius. We determine, by means of the rigorous Mie theory, an exact expression for the time-averaged electromagnetic energy within this particle. For magnetic scatterers, we find that the value of the average internal energy in the resonance picks is much larger than the one associated with a scatterer with the same nonmagnetic medium properties. This result is valid even, and specially, for low size parameter values. Expressions for the contributions of the radial and angular field components to the internal energy are determined. For the analytical study of the weak absorption regime, we derive an exact expression for the absorption cross section in terms of the magnetic Mie internal coefficients. We stress that although the electromagnetic scattering by particles is a well-documented topic, almost no attention has been devoted to magnetic scatterers. Our aim is to provide some new analytical results, which can be used for magnetic particles, and empha- size the unusual properties of the magnetic scatters, which could be important in some applications.

In this work we analytically calculate the time-averaged electromagnetic energy stored inside a nondispersive magnetic isotropic cylinder which is obliquely irradiated by an electromagnetic plane wave. An expression for the optical-absorption efficiency in terms of the magnetic internal coefficients is also obtained. In the low absorption limit, we derive a relation between the normalized internal energy and the optical-absorption efficiency which is not affected by the magnetism and the incidence angle. This mentioned relation, indeed, seems to be independent on the shape of the scatterer. This universal aspect of the internal energy is connected to the transport velocity and consequently to the diffusion coefficient in the multiple scattering regime. Magnetism favors high internal energy for low size parameter cylinders, which leads to a low diffusion coefficient for electromagnetic propagation in 2D random media.

Numerical calculations of light propagation in random media demand the multiply scattered Stokes intensities to be written in a common fixed reference. A particularly useful way to perform automatically these basis transformations is to write the scattered intensities in the Chandrasekhar-Sekera representation. This representation produces side effects so that numerical tests are necessary to deal with the limiting situations of the small-particle (Rayleigh) and forward/backward scattering. Here a new set of basis functions is presented to describe the scattering of light by spherical particles (Mie scattering) in the Chandrasekhar-Sekera representation. These basis functions can be implemented in a new algorithm to calculate the Mie scattering amplitudes, which leads straightforwardly to all the scattering quantities. In contrast to the traditional implementation, this set of basis functions implies to natural numerical convergence to the above mentioned limiting cases, which are thoroughly discussed.
