In an in-situ prepared three-terminal Josephson junction based on the topological insulator Bi$_4$Te$_3$ and the superconductor Nb the transport properties are studied. The differential resistance maps as a function of two bias currents reveal extended areas of Josephson supercurrent including coupling effects between adjacent superconducting electrodes. The observed dynamics for the coupling of the junctions is interpreted using a numerical simulation of a similar geometry based on a resistively and capacitively shunted Josephson junction model. The temperature dependency indicates that the device behaves similar to prior experiments with single Josephson junctions comprising topological insulators weak links. Irradiating radio frequencies to the junction we find a spectrum of integer Shapiro steps and an additional fractional step, which is interpreted by a skewed current-phase relationship. In a perpendicular magnetic field we observe Fraunhofer-like interference patterns of the switching currents.

Eclipsing binary stars with an oscillating giant component allow accurate stellar parameters to be derived and asteroseismic methods to be tested and calibrated. To this aim, suitable systems need to be firstly identified and secondly measured precisely and accurately. KIC 4054905 is one such system, which has been identified, but with measurements of a relatively low precision and with some confusion regarding its parameters and evolutionary state. Our aim is to provide a detailed and precise characterisation of the system and to test asteroseismic scaling relations. Dynamical and asteroseismic parameters of KIC4054905 were determined from Kepler photometry and multi-epoch high-resolution spectra from FIES at the Nordic Optical Telescope. KIC 4054905 was found to belong to the thick disk and consist of two lower red giant branch (RGB) components with nearly identical masses of 0.95$M_{\odot}$ and an age of $9.9\pm0.6$ Gyr. The most evolved star displays solar-like oscillations, which suggest that the star belongs to the RGB, supported also by the radius, which is significantly smaller than the red clump phase for this mass and metallicity. Masses and radii from corrected asteroseismic scaling relations can be brought into full agreement with the dynamical values if the RGB phase is assumed, but a best scaling method could not be identified. We measured dynamical masses and radii with a precision better than 1.0%. We firmly establish the evolutionary nature of the system to be that of two early RGB stars with an age close to 10 Gyr, unlike previous findings. The metallicity and Galactic velocity suggest that the system belongs to the thick disk of the Milky Way. We investigate the agreement between dynamical and asteroseismic parameters for KIC 4054905. Consistent solutions exist, but the need to analyse more systems continues in order to establish the accuracy of asteroseismic methods.

As a function of the driving strength, a degenerate parametric oscillator exhibits an instability at which spontaneous oscillations occur. Close to threshold, both the nonlinearity as well as fluctuations are vital to the accurate description of the dynamics. We study the statistics of the radiation that is emitted by the degenerate parametric oscillator at threshold. For a weak nonlinearity, we can employ a quasiclassical description. We identify a universal Liouvillian that captures the relevant long-time dynamics for large photon-numbers. We find that the cumulants obey a universal power-law scaling as a function of the nonlinearity. The Fano factor shows a maximum close, but not coinciding, with the threshold. Moreover, we predict a certain ratio of the first three cumulants to be independent of the microscopic details of the system and connect the results to experimental platforms.

Parametrically driven oscillators can display period-tripling in response to a drive at thrice the resonance frequency. In contrast to the parametric instability for period doubling, the symmetric fixed-point corresponding to the state of rest remains stable at arbitrary strong driving for the tripling transition. Previously, it has been shown that fluctuations can circumvent this and induce a period-tripling instability. In this article, we explore an alternative way of inducing a period-tripling transition by investigating properties of period-tripling due to parametric down-conversion beyond the rotating-wave approximation. We show that despite the absence of an instability threshold, off-resonant frequency contributions can induce a period-tripling transition by activating the parametric down-conversion. Moreover, we study the subsequent period-tripled states of the Josephson potential and discuss the asymmetry between the clockwise and counter-clockwise rotating fixed-points that only arises beyond the rotating-wave approximation.

Discrete time-translation symmetry breaking can be observed in periodically-driven systems oscillating at a fraction of the frequency of the driving force. However, with the exception of the parametric instability in period-doubling, multi-periodic driving does not lead to an instability threshold. In this paper, we point out that quantum vacuum fluctuations can be generically employed to induce period multiplication. In particular, we discuss the period-tripled states in circuit QED and propose a microwave setup. We show that for weak dissipation or strong driving, the system exhibits a non-equilibrium phase transition in the sense that the time scale over which the period-tripled state is generated can be arbitrarily separated from the time-scale of the subsequent dephasing.

At a bifurcation point, a small change of a parameter causes a qualitative change in the system. Quantum fluctuations wash out this abrupt transition and enable the emission of quantized energy, which we term photons, below the classical bifurcation threshold. Close to the bifurcation point, the resulting photon counting statistics is determined by the instability. We propose a generic method to derive a characteristic function of photon counting close to a bifurcation threshold that only depends on the dynamics and the type of bifurcation, based on the universality of the Martin-Siggia-Rose action. We provide explicit expressions for the cusp catastrophe without conservation laws. Moreover, we propose an experimental setup using driven Josephson junctions that exhibits both a fold and a pitchfork bifurcation behavior close to a cusp catastrophe.

In a process called parametric down-conversion, a dc-biased Josephson junction coupled to two microwave resonators emits photon pairs when the Josephson frequency matches the sum of the two resonance frequencies. Recent experiments have shown that such a setup permits analyzing the correlation of the radiation. Motivated by these results, we study theoretically the full counting statistics of a non-degenerate parametric oscillator below the threshold of instability. Furthermore, we analyze the second-order coherences of the radiation and discuss thermal effects on the radiation statistics. We provide results for the driving strength at which the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality is most strongly violated. Additionally, we study the impact of asymmetry in the linewidth of the modes---a distinctive property of the non-degenerate resonance effect. In particular, we find that the radiation from the mode with the larger linewidth preferably takes the total detuning, while the other mode emits photons at its resonance frequency.

Bloch oscillations in a single Josephson junction in the phase-slip regime relate current to frequency. They can be measured by applying a periodic drive to a DC-biased, small Josephson junction. Phase-locking between the periodic drive and the Bloch oscillations then gives rise to steps at constant current in the I-V curves, also known as dual Shapiro steps. Unlike conventional Shapiro steps, a measurement of these dual Shapiro steps is impeded by the presence of a parasitic capacitance. This capacitance shunts the junction resulting in a suppression of the amplitude of the Bloch oscillations. This detrimental effect of the parasitic capacitance can be remedied by an on-chip superinductance. Additionally, we introduce a large off-chip resistance to provide the necessary dissipation. We investigate the resulting system by a set of analytical and numerical methods. In particular, we obtain an explicit analytical expression for the height of dual Shapiro steps as a function of the ratio of the parasitic capacitance to the superinductance. Using this result, we provide a quantitative estimate of the dual Shapiro step height. Our calculations reveal that even in the presence of a parasitic capacitance, it should be possible to observe Bloch oscillations with realistic experimental parameters.
