Equivalence-principle Analog of the Gravitational Redshift
Abstract: What happens when two synchronized clocks on a rigid beam are both given the exact same acceleration profile? Will they remain synchronized? What if we use a rigid-rod Rindler acceleration profile? The special relativity prediction surprises many people. This experimental setup is the special-relativity analog of the gravitational redshift. Just like two clocks higher and lower in a gravitational… ▽ More

First measurement of muon-neutrino disappearance in NOvA
Abstract: This paper reports the first measurement using the NOvA detectors of $ν_μ$ disappearance in a $ν_μ$ beam. The analysis uses a 14 kton-equivalent exposure of $2.74 \times 10^{20}$ protons-on-target from the Fermilab NuMI beam. Assuming the normal neutrino mass hierarchy, we measure $Δm^{2}_{32}=(2.52^{+0.20}_{-0.18})\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^{2}$ and $\sin^2θ_{23}$ in the range 0.38-0.65, both at the 68%… ▽ More

First measurement of electron neutrino appearance in NOvA
Abstract: We report results from the first search for $ν_μ\toν_e$ transitions by the NOvA experiment. In an exposure equivalent to $2.74\times10^{20}$ protons-on-target in the upgraded NuMI beam at Fermilab, we observe 6 events in the Far Detector, compared to a background expectation of $0.99\pm0.11$ (syst.) events based on the Near Detector measurement. A secondary analysis observes 11 events with a backg… ▽ More

Renaissance of the ~1 TeV Fixed-Target Program
Abstract: This document describes the physics potential of a new fixed-target program based on a ~1 TeV proton source. Two proton sources are potentially available in the future: the existing Tevatron at Fermilab, which can provide 800 GeV protons for fixed-target physics, and a possible upgrade to the SPS at CERN, called SPS+, which would produce 1 TeV protons on target. In this paper we use an example T… ▽ More

ATLAS Pixel Opto-Electronics
Abstract: We have developed two radiation-hard ASICs for optical data transmission in the ATLAS pixel detector at the LHC at CERN: a driver chip for a Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) diode for 80 Mbit/s data transmission from the detector, and a Bi-Phase Mark decoder chip to recover the control data and 40 MHz clock received optically by a PIN diode. We have successfully implemented both AS… ▽ More

Study of tau Decays to Four-Hadron Final States with Kaons
Abstract: The tau decays to four hadrons have been studied with the CLEO III detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR) using (7.56 +- 0.15) fb^{-1} of data collected near the Y(4S) resonance. We present the first statistically significant measurements of B(tau- -> K- pi+pi- pi0 nu, excluding K^0) = (7.4 +- 0.8 +- 1.1) x 10^{-4} and B(tau--> K- K+ pi- pi0 nu) = (5.5 +- 1.4 +- 1.2) x 10^{-5}, inc… ▽ More

Cabibbo-Suppressed Decays of D^+ \to π^+π^0, K^+\bar{K}^0, K^+π^0
Abstract: Using a 13.7 fb-1 data sample collected with the CLEO II and II.V detectors, we report new branching fraction measurements for two Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes of the D+ meson: BR(D+ -> pi+ pi0) = (1.31 +/- 0.17 +/- 0.09 +/- 0.09) x 10^(-3)and BR(D+ -> K+ K0bar) = (5.24 +/- 0.43 +/- 0.20 +/- 0.34) x 10^(-3) which are significant improvements over past measurements. Cabibbo-Suppressed Decays of D^+ to pi^+ pi^0, K^+ K^0, and K^+ pi^0
Abstract: Using a data sample corresponding to 13.7 fb^-1 collected with the CLEO II and II.V detectors, we report new branching fraction measurements for two Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes of the D^+ meson: Br(D^+ to pi^+ pi^0) = (1.3 +/- 0.2) x 10^-3 and Br(D^+ to \bar{K}^0 K^+) = (5.2 +/- 0.6) x 10^-3 which are significant improvements over past measurements.
